this video is brought to you by friend of the channel squarespace stick around to learn more about them as well as a special offer they're making available through my channel gamers february is upon us dying light 2 sifu olly ollie world lost ark horizon forbidden west destiny 2 witch queen and probably some other games that nobody really cares about it's such a massive month and a massive week of news that we don't even have time for our regularly scheduled weekly foreplay so let's just get straight to the news shall we here's a good news story to kick things off facebook lost a boatload of money this week for a long time now the facebook has devolved into an increasingly aged and irrelevant platform old people still use it as an awkward hookup service and their number one source of vaccine disinformation but most people below the age of 35 wouldn't touch this platform with a 40-foot barge pole one time i asked some young people if they had a facebook account and they laughed at me like actual laughter like if someone were to ask you if you had a stadia account more on that later anyway sensing that facebook's days were numbered sentient synthoid mark zuckerberg announced that he would be boldly taking his company where no company has gone before the metaverse the zuck announced that facebook was changing its name to meta and that they would be going all in on the creation of a new virtual world where you can be a robot and play cards on a spaceship or something it was a very cringe inducing demonstration of what the metaverse definitely isn't going to be as his quaint take was grounded more in ready player one fantasy that it was the actual emerging metaverse on platforms like roblox or fortnite the market was none too pleased with this turn being generally skittish about a pivot that seemed too big too early and too fanciful the rubber hit the road this week when facebook announced that for the first time in its history the number of daily active users declined in addition advertising spend was down with facebook citing stiff competition from tick tock and youtube the fallout was catastrophic meta shares tumbled 26 in a day a drop of over 230 billion dollars worth of value which reduced the zuck's personal money pile by over 30 billion dollars poor guy now he only has 90 billion left how's he gonna survive on that so sad breaks my heart my biggest takeaway from all this is that the market certainly doesn't think that the metaverse is gonna save facebook what was positioned as the next frontier for both social interaction and interactive entertainment is still nothing more than a fantasy that sits many many years from reach i'm sure we're gonna see different versions of the metaverse emerge and evolve over the coming decade but do i expect facebook to be at the forefront of that not with promo videos like this i don't speaking of dying platforms this week stadia died again from the very beginning it was clear that stadia had some cool tech but that its business model was a guaranteed recipe for failure it asks users to pay not only a base subscription price and purchase hardware but also a full box price tag for each game like if you wanted to play borderlands 3 on stadia you had to pay the exact same price as buying a physical or digital copy on an existing storefront without the option to download that game to play it on local hardware and without the promise that that version of the game would even exist five years from now since google have a long documented history of abandoning their flavor of the week product rollouts i've spent nearly three years of my life warning people about this and yet i still get comments from angry stadium users calling me a toxic hater dude i was trying to save you some money from when google finally did their rug pull and it looks like that time is either here or very near this week business insider reported that google has massively de-prioritized the consumer side of stadia with less than 20 of the remaining stadia workforce focused on the end user consumer business the rest of the team is working on repackaging and reselling stadia as a white label solution that other companies can utilize a recent example of this is a t who offered batman arkham asylum to their customers and the way that was playable was through stadia but it wasn't branded stadia it was just called google stream interestingly business insider have said that there are a number of other deals on the table including peleton who want to provide a fitness game as part of their product offering capcom who are interested in easily playable demos and bungie who i'm assuming want to utilize this technology to make the eververse accessible on any device i'm joking i'm joking unless business insider report that there is no appetite within stadia to secure big budget aaa titles to bolster their library and steadia's promise of 100 new games this coming year feels a little thrifty when compared to the thousands of games that hit consoles and pcs each year stadiums say that they are still focused on a consumer product but between the shuttering of their first party studios slowing down their release schedule and selling their tech third party i'm a press x to doubt on that one i tried to warn you stadians but you didn't listen once again shill up prognosticator extraordinaire never wrong except for that fallout 76 tweet we don't talk about that one while stadium may be in its death throws other platforms are thriving in particular nintendo's latest handheld the switch nintendo announced this week that the switch had sold through a staggering 103 million units making it the best-selling at-home nintendo console of all time edging out the wii which has sold through roughly 101 million units nintendo have recently said that the switch is still midway through its life cycle meaning that we shouldn't be expecting a follow-up anytime in the next two years this gives the switch plenty of time to surpass its arch nemesis the nintendo ds which holds the record for nintendo's best ever selling console at 154 million units it's a stretch goal but if they release mario kart 9 on the switch i think it'll get there more platform news did you know that sony are paying each bungee developer one million dollars okay not really but this is still pretty wild get this last week oh my god i can't believe that was last week [ __ ] that feels like three months ago anyway last week sony bought bungie for 3.6 billion silver i mean dollars that was a big sum of money and quite a few people were like uh maybe you should have negotiated a little harder for that jim ryan turns out the deal was a little more tricky than we gave jim credit for and the upside may hopefully end up flowing to frontline bungee staff in a recent earnings report sony said that they would be spending a sizable chunk of the 3.6 billion purchase price on the retention of bungie people sony says they're prepared to spend up to a third of that or 1.2 billion dollars to keep those bungee butts in those bungee seats an amount that averages to over 1 million dollars per staff member now does that mean that each bungee developer is going to get a million bucks in their bank account as soon as the ink is dry definitely not firstly we have to assume that a lot of this money will go to retention strategies perks facilities programs etc it's not all going to end up in people's bank accounts secondly there's no way some junior burger quality assurance person is getting the same size slice of that pie as will a senior bungee developer with 20 years under their belt tenure and seniority will likely have a huge impact on how much or how little someone is paid but still some of this money will probably end up in the pocket of bungie developers and that's a good thing in a world where bobby kotick takes home 150 million dollars while minimum wage workers get the sack i'm all for deals that see actual game makers getting paid more than anything else this promise is a testament to just how much of a premium sony put on bungie's people this isn't a purchase like activision blizzard where microsoft got a boatload of ip they got one ip here so they were buying that but they were also buying the incredibly talented people who work at bungie and yeah say what you will about destiny or a business model but the people who make that video game are [ __ ] talented so it's nice to see a deal that respects that talent but sony aren't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts they want to keep bungie so they can leverage their expertise to make muller and not just any muller that sweet live service micro transaction muller that sony have long been missing out on while sony's portfolio of single-player cinematic action games is unmatched they haven't been able to stand up any live service games that produce a sort of long tail revenue that shareholders love that's all about to change though as sony have told their shareholders that they expect to ship no fewer than 10 live service games before march 2026 that's an average of just over two live service games every year for the next four years the bungie acquisition makes a lot of sense in this context since bungie are managing one of the most successful live service games on the market today and are deep in development on a second live service based on entirely new ip then there's the twisted metal reboot which many are guessing will be a live service naughty dog are currently working on a multiplayer game and that too could be a live service in some way shape or form those are just three of the proposed 10 titles so watch this space because sony's live service push already feels like one of the defining aspects of its next-gen growth agenda while destiny continues from strength to strength bungie's other creation halo isn't doing so crash hot under the stewardship of 343 studios hello infinite's multiplayer and campaign launched extremely well but the drop-off on the multiplayer side has been swifter than expected hello infinite sits at around 25 000 peak concurrent players per day which is a decent number but it's well short of comparable offerings apex legends for example is averaging 250 000 peak concurrent users per day and that is a game where a lot of people are playing it on a platform other than steam much like many halo fans are surely playing through the xbox pc client these numbers aren't likely to get any better anytime soon since this week 343 announced that halo's promised content updates were being pushed back to an unknown date disappointingly this content includes seasonal multiplayer updates the promised campaign co-op and the forge creation tool the last two of those things should have shipped with the game's release so it really sucks to see them push back even further especially when infinite was already delayed by a full year after the legendary reveal of craig god bless him hello infinite is a great game on many fronts but it is sadly unfinished and the wait for a complete experience grows ever longer it's a story that's mirrored by one of the biggest flops of 2021 battlefield 2042 except where halo infinite could kind of survive its missing or cut content 2042 absolutely could not from the moment people went hands-on with the beta everyone with half a brain was like for the love of god delay this video game but sure enough android wilson was like nah daddy needs a new pair of gold shoes and so battlefield went out both unfinished and broken and wouldn't you know it it didn't sell very well what a surprise speaking during an earnings call wilson squeezed out this deuce get a load of this quote through our process of testing and preparation we believe the experience was ready to be put in players hands i can't even read it without laughing we launched with strong stability however as more players experienced the full game it became clear there were unanticipated performance issues that we would need to address jesus this quote some of the design choices we made with the game also did not resonate with everyone in our community end quote that is comedy man i try and bring a few last every show but really that's that's comedy right there you can't write it better than that that little bit at the end about some design choices not resonating with everyone in the community yeah no [ __ ] who'd have thought that if you tossed out pretty much every design pillar that underpinned this franchise some people might be disappointed things were so bad that ea refused to issue sales number for the game when asked for them ea responded by saying quote battlefield is less than 10 of our portfolio so not sure what you'll do with those numbers end quote i'll tell you what we'll do with them roast you but you already knew that which is why you refused to give them out nice try wilson but we have steam charts so we can do our own math on this one here's an interesting announcement warcraft is coming to mobile this year in another investor update yes there are a lot of those happening this time of year activision blizzard dropped a very brief mention about upcoming plans for the warcraft franchise quote blizzard is planning substantial new content for the warcraft franchise in 2022 including new experiences in world of warcraft and hearthstone and getting all new mobile warcraft content into players hands for the first time end quote it's certainly not clear what this will be but i'm gonna guess it's one of those mobile rts style games like clash of clans meets warcraft could be cool so long as the micro transactions don't suck too much which they probably will that wasn't the only announcement this week in fact the next announcement was basically the mother of all announcements with just a simple tweet rockstar confirmed that grand theft auto 6 was currently in development quote with every new project our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered we're pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway end quote that really isn't much to go on but it was enough to generate over 550 000 likes and 144 000 retweets i haven't seen that much engagement since troy baker announced his nft scam i mean project the announcement is the least surprising announcement of all time gta 5 has sold 160 million units so yeah obviously they're going to make a sequel to that obviously they've been working on it for a while and obviously it's going to be ambitious since rockstar are anything but lazy when it comes to their box releases updates dlcs and remasters are another matter entirely the lack of details and fanfare here indicate to me that this one isn't anywhere near completion so look forward to playing gta 6 sometime the next three to five years maybe six we're nearing the end of the news block but don't worry i left room for everyone's favorite segment no [ __ ] thanks this week in no [ __ ] thanks ubisoft asked how could we win over our developers who have expressed outrage and disgust at our scammy nft agenda the answer give the developers some nfts kotaku are reporting that this week ubisoft started giving away nfts to some developers as a means of celebrating the 20-year anniversary of ghost recon a shitty anniversary gift to quote kitaku one developer likened it to the staff saying we hate crypto stuff and ubisoft responding with okay come get some this wasn't the biggest nft dunk of the week though that title falls to worms developer and publisher team17 now i like team17 i've profiled many of their games on my channel in the past because they're an indie publisher and i like doing that so you can imagine my disappointment when this week team 17 announced that they were launching a special worms nft project where you can auto-generate some sickeningly ugly nft art as though there's any other type the announcement was met with the typical ridicule reserved for these scams but amplified by the fact that team 17 published a bunch of indie developers who have no problem at all calling out this rubbish aggro crab is one such developer who took no prisoners when they publicly condemned team 17's decision and said they would no longer be associating with them other developers joined in and along with the general public outcry team 17 eventually did the walk of shame that is the inevitable endpoint of most nft announcements saying that they've listened and consulted and they were changing course hmm what a surprise never seen a worm do a backflip before there's a first time for everything i guess speaking of worms and backflips andy wilson just a few months ago this dude unironically said during an ea earnings call that nfts were quote the future of our industry end quote this week in his most recent earnings call andy said that nfts are not something that ea are currently quote driving on end quote when the ceo of the company that won worst company in america two years running starts to bend the knee it can mean only one thing we're winning people we're winning so what got announced or delayed this week well it's not exactly a release date announcement but apparently skate 4 is launching soon tm that's according to ea ceo and blockchain turncoat android wilson who was speaking during a recent ernie's call said that skate was launching soon whatever that means to be honest i think it's just ceo talk for it's coming at some point but i want to make it sound like it's around the corner so you'll buy more of our shares today more helpfully he did confirm that skate 4 will support user generated content which was something alluded to earlier by the dev team so it's nice to know that that hasn't been left on the cutting room floor last week we talked about a very shaky looking release date for the upcoming microsoft published but playstation exclusive ghostwire tokyo earlier a late march release date had leaked onto the psn but it was quickly removed turns out it was basically right ghost why tokyo has been confirmed for a march 25th release date we've got our first in-depth look at the gameplay and it looks interesting i'm not sure about the actual gameplay part of it but the setting and the aesthetic look [ __ ] weird and cool and i'm totally down for whatever they're going for here announced this week the next big thing or should i say small thing from shovel knight developer yacht club games i say a small thing because their new title is loving homage to the handheld era as evidenced by the large pixels the zoomed in perspective and the banging soundtrack take a listen to this this one hit kickstarter a few days ago with a goal of raising three hundred thousand dollars they're now up to seven hundred thousand dollars so yeah they have some cash left over to play with no surprises given how beloved shovel knight was nice to see this team proudly waving that retro flag high mina the hollowah doesn't have a release date yet but it'll probably be out sometime next year here's something that no one expected a new single player gwent game some of you might remember thronebreaker which was a standalone game that combined classic crpg presentation and storytelling with gwent gameplay that one was a critical darling but i'm not sure that it sold a boatload it must have sold enough though because this week ign revealed that cd projekt red are working on a new standalone story driven gwent based experience the title is known only as project golden necker at the moment and the only thing we really know about it is that it's apparently quite different from even throne breaker city project red weren't at all clear on what that means so we'll just have to wait for more details as they drop ahead of the planned 2022 release date and the only other announcement this week was for some boring ct mmorpg that no one plays no one cares about no one even knows exists except for the handful of nerds silence shiloh let's talk guild wars 2 baby the end of dragon's expansion release date has finally been announced february 28th we got boats we got fishing we got droids we got giant sharks we got turtles with freaking laser beams attached to their shells that's my doctor evil impression forget horizon the get elden ring forget lost to arc forget which queen you've got three weeks to prepare for this expansion so get on it austin out if i still knew how to edit i would have totally removed that little interjection sadly i have all but forgotten how to edit in the two years that austin has been doing that for me so now i am powerless he can basically put anything he wants into any one of my videos and there's nothing i can do about it it is the reason i live in fear of austin each and every day anyway there was one delayed rumor for the week and it's quite a bummer if it's true rocksteady's the suicide squad may have been pushed back into 2023 the co-op shooter was fully revealed last year with an amazing looking trailer that gave us hope that yeah maybe rocksteady could get this out by 2022 maybe we could be playing the next rock city game in under 12 months bloomberg sensing our excitement were like psych reporting that sources close to development are saying that the game has been pushed into next year that delay is significant given the fact that rocksteady's last release was 2015 this team have been putting in the years on this one so as much as it bums me out to have to wait longer i rather they take their time and get it right rather than you know rush it out the door and undermine the preceding six years worth of work like basically every other aaa game does these days speaking of which it's time for the review roundup and the only major release this week was for techland's dying light 2 which hit all platforms but to switch since that version has been delayed by up to 6 months kind of weird but ok seems like the other versions could have benefited from a delay as well now to be clear i did play and review this one link to my review below the like button i had a pretty good experience in terms of performance stability and bugs i played on pc mind you which appears to be the best platform to play on since the console versions run a lot worse and they seem to suffer from a host of bugs that the pc version was largely free of regardless of which platform you're playing on co-op appears to be wildly unreliable some people are reporting perfect performance while others have been unable to get co-op working at all this is unsurprising to me since cobb was disabled during the review window which indicated to me that there were likely some big problems with it all of this translates through to a very patchy critical reception the game currently sits at a strong 77 on open critic with most reviews pointing out technical and narrative challenges that are largely outweighed by a familiar but enjoyable open world and some astoundingly good parkour pc gamers scored an 84 saying quote an underwhelming story but a massive exciting sandbox of parkour and kinetic combat end quote while ign scored a 7 out of 10 saying quote dying light 2 stay human is an ambitious zombie action adventure that's packed with top notch parkour and awesome open world and every painful bug in the book end quote ouch my advice on this one if you are keen to pick it up perhaps wait a few months while tech land iron out the bugs that way you'll likely get it on sale and it'll work real shame to have to say that given how long and hard tech land worked on this one but that's just how it is so what's coming out this week well they warned us that february would be a huge month and this week is proof that they weren't lying first up is olly ollyworld a sequel to the pixel based 2d skater and it arrives on all platforms today ollyoliworld basically says what if we took the basic idea of ollie ollie and then multiplied the budget by like 8 000 times the visual jump between this game and the last is like leaping over three console generations and the result looks absolutely stunning reviews for this one have already hit and to the surprise of nobody it's absolutely smashed it sitting in a mighty 86 on open critic and racking up eights and nines across the board february is a very very stacked month for me but i definitely plan on returning to this one in the future when i get some downtime sifu arrives exclusively to the ps4 ps5 and epic game store today as well and i've also reviewed this one link below the like button sifu is sure to be one of the most talked about games of the year as its punishing demands open up the difficulty in games debate in a way that even souls like games don't sifu is not about completion it's about perfection and the repetition that that perfection demands is not going to be for everyone in fact i'd wager it's only for a select group of people still it is an excellent game a few wonky camera and combat issues aside and if you're a glutton for punishment then you're all but certain to love sifu critics are also praising this one putting it at a strong 80 on open critic with commentary generally praising its aesthetic and combat while the more critical reviews take issue with sifu's my way or the highway approach to difficulty crossfire x arrives exclusive to the xbox consoles on the 10th this one isn't even hitting pc by the way since there's already a pc client available in other markets this is actually arguably the most popular game in the world depending on who you ask and which metrics you're using it's absolutely gigantic in asian markets so microsoft are essentially trying to make it a thing here in the west publishing an xbox port of the game and tacking on a campaign mode developed by remedy of all studios i'm not gonna lie to you i just don't know much about this one i have not been following the development of the campaign i've never played the multiplayer feels like a big gap given how popular this game is but yeah that's the truth maybe i'll circle back to it in the future depending on its reception at launch edge of eternity is a jrpg developed in france the game was in early access on pc for a long last time before hitting 1.0 mid last year reviews for it were okay generally sitting in the sevens and eights territory there was always a promise that this would hit consoles and sure enough it's happening on the 10th when it arrives for both playstation and xbox and it'll be a day one game pass title so that's nice if you were one of the four people in existence who haven't yet had your brain scrambled by numerous attempts at storytelling then good news the kingdom hearts games arrive on the switch on the 10th this is all three games with their weird titles like kingdom hearts hd 1.5 plus 2.5 remix that's a real title by the way do note that these are cloud-streamed versions they do not run natively on the switch so they do require an internet connection to play and you can expect at least a small amount of latency possibly more depending on your internet connection i'm not sure why these weren't ported to the switch properly it's not like the switch couldn't run them this is likely just a cheaper solution for square to roll out but it's a bummer for those looking for a more authentic experience last big release of the week is lost arc the mmo arpg hybrid developed by smilegate in korea but published by amazon games for western audiences this one has been eagerly anticipated for years over here as both asia and russia got to enjoy this one while we looked on doing the whole conan gif this does look pretty stunning and while there's certainly plenty of debate to be had about the end game economy of this one most people who've played it agree it's a very solid and worthwhile title this one is free to play exclusive to pc and if you're a twitch prime member you get some exclusive in-game goodies i'm a little too busy with horizon for mid and west this week low key flex but this one is going to sit very high on my pile of shame until i get to it very very excited for this put this on your radar [Music] planet of lana was a game i saw last year and was keen to profile at some point but it kept getting pushed back for whatever reason it's from a newly formed indie studio called wishfully studios who came together in 2018 and this is their debut game i get the feeling this team are veterans as it would be pretty difficult to make something that looks this gorgeous your first go-around wishfully describes planet of lana as quote a cinematic puzzle adventure framed by a sci-fi epic saga that stretches across centuries and galaxies end quote not a bad line this game looks to be a 2d platformer but i'm gonna guess it'll harken closer to the likes of inside and limbo than it will ori or celeste wishfully also say the art you're seeing here is all hand painted and given how striking the effect is i absolutely believe them there's no release date for this one yet but they do promise a 2022 release it's confirmed to be hitting xbox and pc no word yet on playstation or switch versions i think this looks great i'm keeping my eye firmly fixed on it and if you'd like to as well be sure to wish list this one on steam as that always gives developers a helpful boost i'll leave a link to the steam page below sort of free stuff time and it's a quiet week as we're settling into the mid month groove at this point though all of your twitch prime games your ps plus titles and your games with gold are available to add to your library so get in on that kind of a slow month across the board for all three of these platforms but hey can't look at gift horse in the mouth epic continue their weekly giveaway arama right now you can grab the excellent ukulele and the impossible lair but on the 11th that'll tick over to winbound now i play this one and it's okay it's got a pretty sing-song structure that you settle into and get over pretty quickly but the experience of exploring is nice as is the process of building and selling your raft which believe me is not easy at all the first time you sail it this is one of those chill games it's really nice if you're just looking to de-stress after a tough day but yeah don't expect it to knock your socks off outside of that the only thing to really point to is an impressive game pass refresh the aforementioned crossfire x is on there great for anyone keen to check out that remedy made campaign dreamscaper is on there now this is one i've had my eye on for a long time as it was in early access on pc for a number of years before shipping 1.0 last year to solid reviews this is a more ethereal take on the arpg formula which is nice because arpgs are typically very spammy mile a minute experiences if you've been interested to try something like diablo or path of exile but found it all a little too much then dreamscaper might be a great fit for you that's not all though xbox edge of eternity is in the mix as well as we mentioned before arc ultimate survival edition is there if you want to get your grind on and don't mind a fair amount of dino jank and final shout out to telling lies a follow up to one of my favorite games her story while not as well received as her story was i'm just glad that games like this are getting made since they're an entirely unique proposition and i love how they ask you to actively listen and research to catch inconsistencies few games now the detective thing better than these games do so it's worth checking them out for that reason alone our feel good story for the week is one i wanted to cover last week but we ran out of time so here it is hello games you might know them as the makers of no man's sky but before those perilously dangerous icarus level heights sean murray's studio made a little game by the name of joe danger this was originally a ps3 exclusive if you can believe it but eventually it found its way onto xbox 360 and then eventually in 2013 it made its way onto ios updates for that ios version continued for quite some time but would eventually cease and an update to the apple ios operating system would eventually render the game unplayable enter jack an eight-year-old boy diagnosed with autism he loved joe danger he even had little motorcycle toys that he called his joe dangers so when the game eventually became unplayable he was very upset jack's father one of the many mvps of this story was determined that this would not be the end of his son's love of joe danger he wrote to hello games imploring them to provide an update that would make the game playable on the newest ios version and wouldn't you know it hello games listened sean murray and his team were so moved by the missive that they got to work patched the game pushed it out onto the ios store and boom jack was able to keep playing joe danger for as long as he damn well pleases i continue to be impressed by hello games yeah there was all the no man's sky launch stuff sure absolutely but ever since then they've consistently proven themselves to be decent hard-working people who put out an amazing product while asking for very little in return few studios would have taken the time to respond to a little like that let alone update their game on the back of it and in an industry that can often disappoint you i think these stories matter a lovely note to finish on then ladies and gentlemen for this is the end of the episode i thank you for sticking around and making it to the end if you are here and if perchance you enjoyed yourself then pray hit the like button and smasheth the subscribe button may happy dane to make a return dingeth the notification bell for it shall summon you back when the time is right for more lukewarm takes and spicy nft dunks i have been shill up you've been a great audience i'll catch you next week with my horizon forbidden west review [Music] are you an artist photographer or someone who works in the visual mediums if so i'm jealous of you i wish i had skills like that imagine being able to draw
