GROOMING a YORKIE with long hair. Trimming a Yorkshire Terrier in full coat is fun.

hi guys my name is suzanne grandy i am a certified master groomer in tampa florida and i am here with major a yorkshire terrier in full cove so let's get busy and get him grown first thing we want to do is take the band out of his top knot without cutting any hair so i'm going to take a small pair of shears and pull the hair back away from the band separate out the band and stick the shear in just under one piece of the band and cut it without cutting any hair and then pull the top knot apart and take him to the tub all right mr major let's go i will be using i groom squalling care products on him i love those products for full coated drop coated dogs the water warming up this is the shampoo made by igrum it's available at igrum.com i use that full strength when washing a dog in full coat i do try to keep the hair moving in the same direction that we want it to grow and in a drop coated breed like this it is downward this is the eye groom squalling care conditioner it is very thick i put it on full strength and work it all the way through the ends of the coat i'm going to let it sit on about three minutes just to really condition those ends i want to make sure every ounce of conditioner is rinsed out of this hair don't want any residue left i use that equinol ear cleansing solution in the ears this dries out any moisture that might have gotten in the ear during the bath good boy wait i don't rub these cups dry i just wrap them up and squeeze the water out gently it's important to disinfect the tub between dogs all right time to blow dry i'm going to use a sharn bell wall mount dryer and a madden pin brush on him so drawing the face i like to use the diane comb it's a very nice comb for blow drying faces on these little dogs so so so [Music] so [Music] so it's important to teach your long-haired dog to roll over to be brushed out especially to get under the chest up under the arms inside the back legs to train your dog to do this just do it every time that you you brush them out just gently roll them over if they have trouble with this just scratch their chest a little bit and make sure that whatever's under them is soft and cushy i'm using a paw mat palmats are very comfortable non-slip surfaces for pet grooming everything that i'm using today is link below so that you can find the products the madden pin brush we get the paw brothers brushes at ryan's pet supply the diane comb we get on amazon all the links are listed below and it's a good boy if they start to struggle just scratch the chest again relax them and then when it's time to let them up always give them a release word i use the word okay good boy there we go he is all dry now in the show ring they flat iron your geese and that's why their hair comes out so straight in the pet grooming salon i do not flat iron dogs if you want that mirror smooth finish to the dog's coat you could do that i don't recommend it unless the dog is going to be shown or for photographs all right time to start the trimming i'm going to use a 40 blade on a heininger opal clipper you want to be careful not to cut the hair coming off the back of the foot just on the pad itself that hair on the back of the foot helps to create the draping of the coat past the floor [Applause] going to switch blades all right i have switched blades i'm going to use a 30 blade on the tips of the ears i trim about one quarter of the ear coming from the center up center out center out on both sides of the ear i do have a slow motion video showing how i trim these ears that is more close up in my yorkie haircut playlist for more detail on how i do the ears good boy i do not shave the tummy on these full coated dogs i keep full coat underneath and i do not shave around the eyes we keep full coat around the eyes now i'm going to scissor the edges of the ears good boy we want a nice tight finish on the ears good boy yes to round the feet i'm gonna brush all the extra long hair away when i do these feet i trim the hair off the front of the foot and then just a little off the sides and i keep the back of the foot intact good boy all right now i'm going to pick up the feet and brush everything downwards and anything that falls past the pad i'm going to trim off good boy good boy one more i'm being careful to keep all the hair clippings away from the dog so they don't get caught up in the longer coat and now i'm going to pull this long hair backing away with the feet on the floor just going to neaten up around the edges keeping a big fat foot not tight at all good boy very nice all right now under the tail i do not take clippers under here for these long coated dogs if at all possible combing all the full coat away and i'm just going to take my scissors and very carefully trim around the anus that's a good boy all right there we go that's a good boy so i love you yes you do i love that boy so let's check and see what his ears look like when he perks his ears up see a little bit of hair over here i want to get that's a good boy all right it's time to put up his top knot and get the hair out of his eyes to do this i'm going to be using show premium pet grooming products picture perfect a very fine knitting needle my madden pin brush and he has a custom-made bow ready for him i also have some laney ltd bands in blue all these items are linked below the companies that we get them from and this is a top knot pillow it is not linked below but i got this on etsy a barbie dog is what it's called but there's a lot of different top knot pillows available on etsy you can train your dog to lay down and use a top knot pillow down good boy you teach them to just lay their head right on the pillow you can see his hair is all fly away around his face and that's what i use the show premium for good one down and down down down down here we go to use the show premium pet grooming products picture perfect i take a tiny bit put it on my finger and make it almost disappear and i put some between the eyes going backwards and put some creating the part over the nose and this is kind of like a mustache grease or a hair gel it's made for dogs it's made for using around the eyes i just want to set in this part firmly this is a chris christensen butter comb number zero zero six it's a face comb i'm taking my knitting needle and from the back corner of the eye to the opposite back corner of the eye taking it straight across putting my first band in that's a good boy and i'll hold the band the hair back from the band take my knitting needle put it into the bands and just angle it backwards to give it a little bubble up front and then i'm going to take the hair from the very center of this tiny ponytail and hold the center and push it down gives me a nice bubble up front go ahead and put my bow in i'm going to take my next section of hair just in front of the ears good boy stay stay and i'm going to put a band directly behind the bow pulling both ponytails together good boy i brush the hair straight back and starting right between the ears i'm going to start creating a part doing about three or four inches at a time all the way to the tail that's a good boy and using igram magic mist spray about four inches out off the coat i'm going to put a heavy spray all the way down the back take my hands and pull the part down and brush it into place and there we go that's a good boy that's a good boy that's a good boy all right there's major the full-coated yorkie isn't he a handsome fella he is he's a handsome pillow all right
