Greta Gerwig talks about her new film, ‘Barbie’ l GMA

[Music] welcome back you know all week long we've been counting down to the hot pink movie of The Summer the um one and only Barbie yeah the when the this morning the film's Oscar nominee direct and writer Greta Gerwig is here with us we're going to take a look at a clip first let's check it out great not even broken you'll be fine shredding waves is much more dangerous than people realize you're very brave Kevin thank you Barbie yeah you know surfer's not even my job I know and it is not lifeguard which is a common misconception very common yeah it's actually my job it's just Beach right and what a good job you do it Beach okay this is it's so funny every time we see a clear it makes me laugh you're laughing and you wrote and directed this movie but Greta welcome to the show we're so happy that you're here and there's so much excitement surrounding this movie and we were talking right before we started I grew up with Barbie and when you see it like everyone kind of has some attachment to Barbie but you were raised by a mother who was a little hesitant yeah about Barbie so did that affect the way that you told this story well yeah I mean yeah my mom wasn't like uh she was a little wary of Barbie for all the reasons that you would be but um I it obviously like the things you limit it just made Barbie more compelling and exciting to me because it had this air of intrigue but really I mean most of my Barbie dolls came into my house from like girls in the neighborhood like hand me down so they'd been pre-loved with like the haircut and they didn't never had shoes went into the uh into this movie in one of the characters of Kate McKinnon plays and and I was at Margot Robbie she's Barbie Ryan Gosling he is Ken yes but you said you wrote this specifically for Ryan so why would he the perfect kin I well I I knew I we you know we were going to make it for Margot but Ryan I just thought I just he just made me and my writing partner know about him back like laugh when we thought about it we were like he's so funny but he's funny because he takes it so seriously and that's where his comedy comes from and honestly it was like okay this is for for Ryan and then we gave the script to the studio and they were like oh that's amazing you know Ryan I was like I've never met Ryan do you know Ryan and they said oh we're gonna have to get it so it took it took some time to kind of coordinate everything but I just never saw it with anyone else because his comedy is just so it's so truthful and rooted and real in real feeling well and I think he's perfect for this obviously but something you did which I love you took the incredible cast and you had a Barbie sleepover before you started filming what was that like it was it was I mean childhood to bond everyone because so much of making a Barbie movie is remembering your childhood and so all the Barbies had a sleepover and then the Ken's came by for for like playing charades and stuff and then and then left when we got into our pajamas and it was the most amazing fun time and it made everyone feel like a kid again and Ryan wasn't able to make it but he did send a bagpiper um so he sent a bagpipe he sent a bagpiper which was somehow the perfect thing to do and and being that you are a director you're a writer you're an actress as well and I have to ask you about this the wga yeah and and and also sag after the strikes that are in Hollywood why is this such an important moment right now in Hollywood yeah I mean I'm a three guild member so I'm in the Director's Guild The Screen Actors Guild and the writer's Guild and I mean I think it's a it's a critical inflection point I think everything that the guilds are fighting for is extremely important for the sustainability of our industry and I think particularly guard rails around AI which I'm learning about along with everybody else um it's just incredibly important so I I really hope that the studios come back to the table to give the the writers and the actors a fair and Equitable deal well I think all of us hope that that works out and that everyone could be happy at the end of it and if they get a chance watch Barbie that'll make you happy yes in the meantime yeah yeah I mean it really was we made it for joy and I think it's really wonderful to see it being received that way well I haven't seen anything that hasn't made me smile so Greta thank you thank you so much for being here we really appreciate it thank you and everybody at home Barbie hit theaters Nationwide tomorrow do not miss it Greta Gerwig well hey there GMA fans Robin Roberts here thanks for checking out our YouTube channel lots of great stuff here so go on click the Subscribe button right over right over here to get more of Awesome videos and content from GMA every day anytime we thank you for watching and we'll see you in the morning on GMA
