since ancient times the japanese have believed that a life force resides in all creations [Music] valuing and caring for the things we use a zero waste life pointing the way to better living for a new era [Music] me [Music] a mountain range in central japan taking advantage of the abundant local nature one woman truly leads a zero-waste life ohio me now higher [Music] this is nakahara keiko she works as a weaver and dyer [Music] so [Music] her fundamental respect for all things is in some cases quite literally woven into everything that she makes [Music] here she's tearing old sheets into strips they're an essential element in her weaving [Music] the hand-torn sheets are woven into mats um [Music] her drive to make the most of all things is also found in her dying [Music] hi the pampers grass is boiled to extract the natural pigments for dying hmm a beautiful hue born from humble mountain grass avocado skins and seeds produce this vivid color [Music] this scarf was dyed with old tea leaves she even makes dye with the soot from her wood-burning stove [Music] um from an early age nakahara learned to value all things all the clothing she wears was woven and dyed by her own hands [Music] today she's delivering some of her handmade goods to a local seller [Music] [Laughter] a group of devoted fans always looks forward to seeing her latest creations foreign in her youth nakahara lived in the city she had always longed to live in the country and 30 years ago she moved here with her family even in her day-to-day life she tries to avoid using anything disposable she uses no plastic wrap for vegetables she made this wrapping cloth herself with the help of certain living creatures to be specific japanese honeybees [Music] nakahara collects beeswax from the hive which she then uses to make the wraps [Music] the wax is first melted she then coats a cloth in the liquid wax it's then ironed and once it hardens it's complete [Music] in hope of spreading her zero waste lifestyle she also makes her own online videos [Music] she's using scraps of fabric from old kimonos [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] my [Music] you
