this video is not about what you probably think it is [Music] gran turismo 7 disappointed me more or less from the jump and that really stung this was my most anticipated game in years so believe me this video is not the result of trying to hate a game to be the odd voice out in a sea of positive reviews but i also wanted to wait and see if my opinion would change with time i mean hey i've been wrong before i hated gt6 at launch and now it's a three-way tie for my favorite game in the series and to a point that approach worked i have slightly warmed up to gran turismo 7 but i still struggle to describe my feelings as anything other than disappointment this game had so much potential to be an amazing evolution of the franchise a marrying of the new and the old to create a world-class driving game one that satisfies all niches within the wide skill of grand desmond's fan base this game should have combined the best online racing on consoles from gt sport with the unmatched freedom and personality of earlier games single player offerings all while taking advantage of the best hardware prolific digital has ever had access to this game could easily have been the pinnacle of the franchise and yet it's done none of those things not a single point of what i just said matches up with corinthians 7's reality it is a step backward in every category i must give credit where it's due gt7 is absolutely gorgeous gt sport was already stunning but played on ps5 gt7 blurs the line between fiction and reality it's not uncommon for the only tell them images from gran turismo and not some real-life promotional material or motorsports photography to be the impossible camera angles from which the photo was taken it's even better in motion and while a lot of that has to do with graphical fidelity there are a couple of other things at play gg7s new physics have the side effect of making independent movements of different areas of the car suspension look more believable than those than any other sim i've ever played i also don't really have facts or figures to substantiate this but gran turismo 7 feels like it runs significantly smoother than sport did sport does run at 60 frames i don't know what's different here if anything at all but for some reason gt7 just looks smoother and better in all regards the footage you're seeing in this segment and indeed most of what you're seeing in the entire video is courtesy of this video's sponsor narvatek and their new capture card the ns120 capture wand the ns120 is a compact low-cost solution that doesn't skimp on quality offering 1080p capture at up to 120 frames per second out of a device barely larger than a flash drive if you're on the home office grind or looking to use a big boy camera on your streaming setup the ns120 can also do 4k30 capture from your dslr or mirrorless equivalent making it the only capture card on the market to support both 4k 30 and 1080 120 frames per second capture no this is my new primary capture device the ns120 fits perfectly into my new living room capture station and believe me that is a high bar i've put this capture card through its paces capturing everything from a sega saturn to ps5 and i have zero complaints the ns120 comes in at less than half the cost of the other two capture cards in my arsenal and it absolutely wipes the floor with them in terms of ease of use and overall user experience there's no complex setup or bloated proprietary software it's literally all just plug and play it grabs sync faster and has less delay than any of my previous capture devices and it's also literally just this little usb stick the small size makes it perfect for game capture when traveling or attending gaming events while the lightning quick instant preview is ideal for streaming your game to friends over discord when you're back home the ns120 is now my go-to capture device and an easy recommendation as far as i'm concerned if you're in the market check out the ns120 from the link in the description and use the promo code kc120 to get 10 off your purchase and a big thanks to neritech for sponsoring this video gran turismo has always been about carving out a personal journey through a stair-step selection of events previous gran turismo is presented to the player with a wide variety of races that could be completed in a player determined order with both soft and hard road blocks to maintain a general sense of progression put simply you started slow and ended up fast but the path you took to get there was completely up to you here are just a few ways you could have started playing gran turismo 5. you could have started out in a car you knew would be a great platform for tuning and use that car in as many events as possible before using the winnings to purchase something else that would be allowed in events that didn't allow your first car you could have bought whatever looked interesting used it for the sunday cup and then dumped it in favor of something else basically refusing to use the same car for more than one event you could have grinded out the license tests and gotten prized cars immediately bestowing yourself with a small collection that would likely satisfy the entry requirements for most events in the first tier there are numerable more options but i think this is more than enough to make my point especially if you notice how none of those things i just mentioned named a specific vehicle gran turismo has historically offered so much player agency that even within the first few hours every player can have a wholly unique experience and gran turismo 7 though this doesn't happen the single player portion of the game is centered around something called the gran turismo cafe an in universe coffee shop we were given menu books which tasks you with collecting specific cards by either purchasing them or winning them as prizes and specific events as a reward for completing each book you're given a history lesson about the cars you've just collected when this was announced a few months prior to release i thought it was a really cute idea i still do but in execution these cafe books are a complete betrayal of gran turismo's traditional concept you see the way i incorrectly understood the grand transfer cafe upon its announcement was that cafe menu books would be side missions i thought that if i wanted to spice up my normal career mode i could go to the cafe and pick up a unique menu book to give me a small short term goal to chip away at while still making my way to the traditional gt mode campaign that i expected the game to have but none of my assumptions were correct menu books are not side quests they're the meat and potatoes of gt7's single-player offering they have been treated as a wholesale replacement for the traditional gt league and crucially they're not unique or even random menu books are completely wholly linear players are railroaded through the cafe books in a way that more or less guarantees that the first 100 or so cars player requires will be more or less identical to every other player every single person that plays gran turismo 7 will receive the same menu books in the same order and thus collect the exact same cars of course you can at any point go to brand central or the used car dealership and buy whatever you like but the events for each menu book often require specific categories of vehicle getting as specific as demanding a gtr be used for all three reasons of the gtr menu book so while you can theoretically buy whatever you want if you intend to progress through the game your options are significantly limited the used car dealership which i was incredibly excited to see return does guarantee you'll never get stuck for lack of an eligible car but only because at least one of the vehicles from your current menu book will be available there at all times meaning you can basically purchase your way through one third of every step of the campaign the used car dealership has a myriad more problems which i'll get into in a minute but suffice it to say that it has the same problem as brand central even if you do buy other cars from this dealership you can't use them to progress through the game as you would in previous entries on that note alone the menu book based progression system found in korean trust mode 7 is worse than what it's replacing full stop there is no benefit of this system strong enough to make up for such severe shipping of player agency in truth gran turismo cafe plays more like an overgrown tutorial than a fleshed-out mode and i struggle to understand why polyphony decided that this was the core around which gran turismo 7 would orbit the most obvious answer is accessibility not in the accommodating disability sense but in the appealing to the masses sense but that argument doesn't hold water when 5 out of 6 mainline entries in the franchise have been in the top three best-selling games on every single playstation they've appeared on but even ignoring sales i don't think the series needed to be more accessible i've always described gran turismo as the most accessible simulator on the market and that remains true with gt7 and i don't just mean in terms of difficulty in assist settings gran turismo's wide variety of vehicles ranging from everyday commuters to lmp1 race cars mean that no matter what you like to drive you have something to love in gran turismo's lineup everything handles decently well and newcomers to the genre have something fun yet manageable to start out in if you treat this game like automobilista 2 or project cars 2 that is you primarily play custom races or private multiplayer lobbies then gran turismo 7 is still a world-class accessible simulator or at least that would be possible in a perfect world but as it stands playing gran turismo 7 as a sandbox simulator isn't really even an option not until you've completed the single player campaign or at least a significant portion of it core features of the game are locked behind menu book progression and the vast majority of the game's tracks are drip fed to the player throughout the duration of the cafe mode and i don't mean things are a bit gated off until you get up to speed that's normal i mean the average player will unlock the legendary 24 hours of le mans circuit until over 20 hours into the game after completing the second to last menu book there's no sugar cutting this the menu book concept is complete utter failure in game design polyphony have managed to make a 22 tutorial almost completely stripping away player agency and expression it's a tutorial that concludes not by releasing the player into the game sandbox newly uninhibited and free to explore but by rolling the credits and dumping them back into the game feeling as if their decisions were made for them before they even purchased it and in truth there's not much in the way of meaningful progress to be made past this point while gt7 has some events left to do outside of the cafe books they're certainly far from the focus of its career mode after completing the last menu book and instead leans obnoxiously hard into the car collection mechanic which while certainly core to previous gran turismo games doesn't quite work the same as it used to and i suppose that now is as good a time as any to explain my gripes to used car dealership previous iteration of the used dealership would update after every race giving players incentive to actually play the game so they could discover more treasures with which to continue enjoying the game it's a pretty basic positive feedback loop but in gran turismo 7 the used car dealership has been watered down from a massive selection of seemingly random models to a few cars at a time which unlike previous games are exactly the same for every player like i said i was ecstatic to see the used dealership return after our 12th year absence but when the selection updates only once a day is universal to every player and creates artificial scarcity to pressure players into grinding to afford rare cars before they're gone it becomes undeniable this feature was only included to hopefully lure players into returning to the game every day for fear of missing out and if that sentence does not encapsulate the whole of grand christmas seven's design i don't know what does this exact same design principle is applied to the legends dealership the daily workouts the roulette tickets and brand invitations rather than simply providing a game that players can fully enjoy on their own terms gran turismo 7 has instead taken the modern aaa route of drip feeding players just enough enjoyment they'll come back tomorrow even if that means the immediate experience is lessened going into writing this video i'd wanted to discuss my criticisms of the new handling model and the second class treatment of sport mode and believe me i still have so so many complaints about those two things i'm not happy with either one of them but i don't think either of them have the same weight as grindr's mr seven's biggest problems and i'm starting to worry the series might succumb to that weight live services are in themselves a compromise the corporate thinking is that if you devote a lot of time to a game over a longer period you'll have an easier time to convincing yourself that it's worth your microtransaction dollars while the trade-off is that relying on long-term spending allows everyone to benefit from those dollars whether or not they spend any themselves it's certainly a proven concept destiny rainbow six siege and forza horizon are all thriving live services but importantly those games rely heavily on social interaction and incremental content drops and have done so for most if not the entirety of their existence they make sense as live services but implementing those things into gran turismo requires gutting the core of what the 25 year old series once was and replacing it with something unmistakably unignorably commercial internet opinions are far from a reliable way to gauge how the average person feels but it's becoming more and more clear by the day that a live service is not what this fan base wanted but at the same time the game couldn't exist if it didn't guarantee a long-term revenue stream for sony as much as the idealist in me believes that sony should be making this game out of love and respect for the art form that's simply not reality they need to make a return on investment and as the cost of game development balloons larger and larger there's no clear answer as to what that looks like if not a live service how can the soul of such an open-ended game live on while also guaranteeing long-term financial success kazunur yamauchi has stated that he hopes people will give gran tusmos 7 a chance to grow into the game he knows it can be and with gt sports excellent post launch support in the rear view i fully believe that g7 will change for the better but with that feature being built upon such a shaky foundation i'm not so sure that players will stick around to see it and i can't say i blame them [Music] you
