[Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to this unique graduation ceremony for the master programs of 2020 and 21 at the faculty of social science lund university my name is hanaborg and i'm being granted the honor of guiding you through this for the first time ever streamed ceremony on youtube the ceremony is recorded live but some of the speeches are pre-recorded due to the restrictions of kobe 19 but you will be able to relive this moment uh many times until the 14th of june if you like so please let the tech gods be with us tonight or today this day should of course been about celebrating together under a pale swedish summer sun that is actually quite hot today you and your families all students dressed up smiling on the stairs of the university building stairs but i'm here by myself but i'm not alone i'm not alone since you lot are joining me from all over the world crossing timelines and probably still wearing your favorite coved outfits i've been wearing the pjs for a year now so this feels very strange i'm just happy that i remember to put on a skirt today today we will celebrate all the efforts that you have done during the past years we will hear sweet music performed by parts of triovolsky we will hear inspiring words from pro deans honorary doctors and of course from you students these students that gonna talk today they have not been selected based on their academic merits but rather from nominations by you students or by the teaching staffers teaching staffs since they are all about inspiration and embodying the spirit of the future that you are all about to enter a future that we really hope content contains less pandemics of course as we proceed the students will be joining us from program specific zoom rooms you might see this as the academic version of the eurovision song contest so the contesters aka the students are sitting in their separate green rooms and they will have the opportunity to wave to us during this ceremony so to all your students please hold back on the champagne until this is over with this i would like to welcome you all and i will hand over the stage to the pro dean of the faculty of social science agnes anderson your felt dear students i'm delighted to be here with you today on this very special day of celebration i would like to start by emphasizing that this is your day even if it is nice to know that friends family members and some faculty are joining us as well i think we should be clear that this is a day to celebrate your accomplishments we would of course all like to have been here under other circumstances enjoying a live event in the lund draped in its prettiest springtime flowers still symbolically perhaps this year's ceremony is one of the most important ones even if we cannot meet in person i know by now you're probably all fed up with the pandemic in all respects large and small and it has of course been hugely challenging in many ways but has i think also shown us the importance of human relationships and the constancy that ceremonies like today's graduation ceremony provide in times of uncertainty the faculty takes great pride in you all and your academic accomplishments of course but also in your astounding resilience some of you have been away from loved ones in distant places and some of you may have directly been affected by the pandemic at close hand all of you have been affected in your studies and in your personal freedoms still you have persevered and whether you defended your thesis just a few days ago or last year you managed to complete your degree under these challenging conditions you may be uncertain about what the future holds but my hope is that you will carry with you this fact as a reminder of your fortitude as you leave lund university as an alum of the faculty of social sciences you're also equipped with a first class education and part of a group of students with which you have forged lasting bonds of friendship the possibilities for keeping in touch both with lund university and with your course mates and faculty members are better than ever given the push that the pandemic has provided to virtual meetings like the ones we're having today it is my sincere hope that your memories of lund university will not be clouded entirely by the challenges of the pandemic but that you will recall instead the personal and academic growth that have accompanied your studies and the relationships you have crafted with course mates faculty members and indeed the town itself i wish you all the future pleasure of looking back and cherishing the graduation ceremony today and it's a symbolic importance as a milestone in your lives even if it is an online event i would like to close by extending my warmest congratulations to you all on behalf of the faculty of social sciences and wish you all the best for your future endeavors well done all you did thank you agnes for those kind words now joining us from ghana is the honourable doctor ernest ariyati he's the secretary general of the african research university alliance and a former vice chancellor of the university of ghana please welcome professor ariata distinguish ladies and gentlemen i am indeed honored to have been invited to speak to you at this graduation ceremony let me begin by congratulating the classes of 2020 and 2021 on reaching this milestone i'm certain that your families friends and faculty members are very proud of your achievements i would like to use my remarks to touch on one theme namely service to the community as an honorary doctor of lund one thing that resonates very well with me is the vision of your institution a world-class university that works to understand explain and improve our world and the human condition indeed lund university promotes this core value to make a positive impact on the community in each of its missions this is evident in the several innovative studies conducted by researchers of this great institution the artificial kidney ultrasound technology and bluetooth are all examples of inventions that originated from lund university and which opened new doors for millions of people all over the world as your university provides a very valuable service to the world how can you as individual stakeholders make your own contributions to the community service to the community can come in many different forms we can apply the knowledge we have gained and the values we have acquired to improve the lives of other people in my part of the world africa service to the community sometimes takes the form of health workers and other social service professionals taking up positions in remote parts of their countries where many people live in total deprivation it can also take the form of community engagement in activities that bring relief to disadvantaged people in your part of the world they sometimes take the form of people volunteering to bring new ideas or new knowledge to other people in deprived parts of cities taking up courses such as campaigns for better management of the environment climate change greater equality and social justice are all ways in which you can serve your community remember that the idea is to use your new knowledge to improve the lives of other people in this vein i challenge each of you to give generously of your time expertise experience and advice to others raise your sense of self-worth by giving a hand to someone else in need serve as an engaged and committed mentor to younger people or less fortunate people wherever you find yourself do not just listen to them but hear what they need always err on the side of selflessness and remember that every small gesture counts in ending my address i would like to remind you that your education at lund university has opened doors for you you will have to walk through those doors yourself walk through the doors and meet the world your way i wish you the very best as you go out into a new uncertain world thank you very much for your attention thank you so to quote professor ariate remember to use your knowledge to improve the life of others and now i have cherish the good moments the great memories that we have all shared together the networks that we have built the friendships that we have created in class and outside the classroom i also want to take you back to the very beginning the reason why you chose lund the proud moment of getting admission being awarded scholarships and for international students traveling to sweden and all the excitements hannah bloombay on violin and peter fernaman on accordion uh now i have the honor of introducing our next speaker our next speaker is from the faculty of social science student union and it's christina mossberg dear social science students or should i say social scientists my name is christina mosbik and i am the president of the social sciences student union i am very proud and happy that i get to share this important day with you today i would like to share a quote for hardships to the stars i'm always impressed by people who takes a master's degree to get fruit education requires discipline determination and a lot of will and hard work this year i am even more impressed you have all managed to complete a master's master's degree under extremely strange and difficult conditions social distance distance learning and without being able to meet and discuss the course with your classmates i hope you all are very proud the last year has required a lot of you as students but i hope that you see what you have learned from it as well you have gained knowledge in how to project manage your own work how to be flexible manage repeatedly changing circumstances and continue to study even when you are unaware of what will happen in the coming months or in the next few days these are all qualities that you will benefit from for the rest of your life both in your working life and in your personal life we are starting to see the end of this pandemic thanks to vaccines and the joint effort of many i hope you all if not today very soon can celebrate your graduation with your beloved ones dear social scientists you have passed the hardships and the way to the stars are now right ahead of you big congratulations to your well-deserved master's degrees thank you christina now i have the honor of introducing the graduating classes of the following programs masters of science in social studies of gender master of science in gender migration and social justice master of science in human ecology culture power and sustainability and master of science in human geography [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] congratulations to you all now i have the honor to introduce you to the next student speaker this one is from the master program of gender migration and social justin justice marlene hellstrom sommerson she's been nominated to do this speech uh with a nomination saying that she's an engaged cure curious and ambitious student that throughout her studies has been active in creating an encouraging environment environment that strength uh dev her fellow students those are very warm and kind words and i would like to give the word to moline helstrom somerson the purpose of writing is to try to find out what you would write if you wrote and you only know that afterwards before it can be the most dangerous question to ask yourself yet it's the most common says the author and director margaret theras my name is marlin and i've been a student at the master's program in gender migration and social justice during the past two years and i was reading duras during my last week of writing my mastery thesis and i felt that there was something true to this quote also when it comes to academic writing because how often doesn't the intellectual work the analytical writing just bring you to all these unexpected places which you couldn't have known beforehand and how often don't you therefore end up writing the introduction chapter at the very end yet you tend to ask yourself beforehand what will i write about what will i think but it's not only you who ask yourself this question it's also it's also your friends and peers and parents and lovers and supervisors and financial donors and politicians and political debaters everyone and therefore i think that the the academia and especially the social that the disciplines where we are within the social social sciences play an important role here because they offer us a platform with resources in terms of especially time but also knowledge and and money where we are allowed to with patience explore our writing and thinking which can bring us to unexpected places and i am sure that i speak on behalf of many when i say that i feel extremely privileged and grateful towards the academia and our faculty for having given us this opportunity but so here we are at the very end of our journey of our story about our time at the university and we're about to write the introduction chapter so did this time end up the way that we thought it would that we stick to the research question well no not at all the pandemic turned the world upside down both our society at large but also our personal lives and again i'm sure that i speak on behalf of many when i say that these past months have been very very tough and lonely and difficult and i i don't really have any comforting words to say about this apart from that i i really feel that you should be proud of yourself for having the patience and strength to just come this far and i hope that we will be able to come back to the academia and classrooms in a more collective way soon however many of us might not go back to the classrooms and but instead go out in the big world and try to find a job and i know that many feel scared about this be included and so i guess i just we just have to recall the advice of duress and not think not ask ourselves too many questions here at the beginning about what we will do and instead just try to find out what we would do if we just went congratulations again for coming thus far and i hope that you can enjoy your summer um good luck food for thought thank you marlon for that now we will have the opportunity to again enjoy some of uh parts of triovolsky's music this time it's something called jesse herringen and that is newly composed music in a traditional fashion [Music] [Applause] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] [Applause] [Music] my [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] a [Music] so [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] do [Music] thank you peter and hannah for the music next to join me here is vasna ramsar vasna is an active teacher at the department of human geography and she was also elected to the holder of the student pedagogical prize 2020. this prize is handed out each year by nomination by the student unions and i might say that it's the finest prize you can get as a teaching staff so welcome dear graduating class of 2021 what a privilege it is for me to be able to say a few words on this important day as we hold this graduation digitally the pandemic is unfortunately on everyone's mind there may be no opportunities for hugs or shaking hands but to your graduating class goes a special honour of finishing your studies through a world changing experience i want to say two things about this as you move forward many of you away from lund university this difficult period of multiple crises has been a mental health challenge for all of us you have shown strength and perseverance in adapting and progressing i cannot be more proud of all of you i hope you carry the strength with you throughout life another factor of coping has been the incredible care kindness and solidarity that i have seen amongst the students this is the most important part of our humanity and will help us all to deal with the ecological social economic and multiple issues that your generation must tackle as you have been kind to each other do so moving forward and yes you are going out into a world that is constantly changing and where every day brings more sad news i hope your education at lund university has shaped your critical thought to enable you to tackle the uncertainties that lie ahead we are certainly proud to in some way have been able to contribute to all that will you will do going forward to this end i must also acknowledge all the teachers and administrators at the faculty of social science many of us have gone above and beyond our normal duties this year and this day is also when we should all take a moment to reflect and appreciate the efforts that have been made thank you to all the teachers all the staff of flint university but most especially thank you to all the students who have been wonderful and have really taught me as well through this time and so i wish you all well i wish you courage and boldness as you move into the next chapter of your life and i hope that you always do so with kindness and care have the most wonderful time going forward thank you vasana for being an inspiration for all work in academia and for a well-deserved prize now i have the honor of introducing the graduating classes of master of science in environmental studies and sustainability science lumis master of science in international development and management limit [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] congratulations bring out the champagne you're well worth it so i now have the honor to introduce the next student speaker joining us from lou mester environmental studies and sustainability science program it's maris padaya and she's been nominated by a fellow student and i quote she has a great connection to all our classmates and a wonderful way of finding the right words for the big things in life if i were maurice i would put that on my cv thank you maurice dear graduating students professors organizers dear friends it's a true honor and privilege to be here with you today now that i've been asked to reflect back on our time i hope you forgive me if i do it in rhymes because my brain is exhausted of academic paradigms so fellow students i do not know you all but i'm sure that you're all like myself you came to lund's truly keen to dance like upper stance in queen and despite your disbelief got lost again in tiny streets that you too got a bike already used formed your alleys and crews love and friendship got fused and you never refused a falafel or two and you two felt that corona up everything and now we'll all soon depart you know how they tend to say it's not an end but a beginning my friends what a cheerful trend she recommends not to be sad yes our futures are filled with colors and shades jobs hopefully paid new adventures new places new projects new faces new neighbors new bosses victories losses dark days and light love making and fights sunshine and moonlight exciting years ahead of us filled with personal growth and economic de-growth both hopefully but besides i'm afraid fast lifestyles will fade the memories of us today so we less and less hear from our cute old friends here with schedules so tight one even might forget to ask are you or right but it's not meant to be a sad speech although it feels so bittersweet do not grow numb do not deplete your feelings without your incomplete don't measure love on an excel sheet nor refrain from loving who is not in reach remember value the present it's here right now we are all here connected in times when no one has time right now when our hearts align i raise my class and pass you the vine in the midst of the crisis and dreadful headlines of battles and hunger and resistance front lines warming climates and poverty lines social struggles that go undermines being uncertain without the guidelines how to tackle the crisis that don't seem to decline i raise my class and pass you the vine you're not alone we are intertwined all of us left something behind and took something with us that is hard to define the point i want to underline is we've shared our lives this valuable time won't slip into the oblivion as time passes by just think about it how powerful we are together in different parts of the world but grounded not flying like feathers but always surrounded by the relationships that cross the borders of distance and time so my dear friends and all of you here on that note i'll shut up and disappear one more time i raise my class and cheers and thank you thank you maurice that is a hard act to follow uh as my you sorry as you might know some don't believe in the afterlife of your studies and i know it's been hard maybe to focus on that when you're being caught up with exams and deadlines but the uncertainty even though the uncertainty is great i have some
