who you are [Music] even when can we sing that part even when i don't see it you're working even when i don't feel it you're working [Music] who believes that today [Music] well church this is prayer meeting if this is your first time we welcome you here tonight we're gonna as you've seen we we worship the lord we're gonna enter into a time of prayer we have a very special guest with us here jonathan science he's going to come and teach in a little bit but before we get there we're going to press into some prayer points and this is as our pastors our pastor steve wriggle as he talks about it this is a laboratory for you to lift your voice in prayer to be bold how many know we need some more people in this world to lift their voice and speak out and be bold and pursue the things of the lord amen i was reminded well as as i'm sure all of you know at this point we're in this series uh simply entitled you say it very good uh we're addressing a lot of things that are happening in our world right now and and we're talking about how as followers of jesus as people who believe in the things that are found in the word of god not in the word of man that there are times when you just have to stand up one of the most simple but powerful things you can do sometimes in life is just simply say no and uh over the last few days some of our team has been uh in a in a small town in oregon outside of uh portland and those of you who know what portland is like it's uh it's it's been through a tough time over the last you know well pretty long season but especially the last couple of years and then the kova season it just it got far worse and we were with pastors and leaders in our association grace international and the room is filled with people that are just are fighting the fight in oregon against a lot of oppression and tyranny and pressure and they're being squeezed and in talking with them some of them i you know we look in their eyes and and honestly they're a little tired they're a little worn out but i can tell you they are not giving up they are going to continue to preach the gospel of jesus the full gospel of jesus in oregon and so and as i was leading them in worship over the last couple days i noticed that we sang this song and when we got to the part even when i don't see it you're working their faith kind of rose up beyond the worn out time maybe that's you tonight maybe you're worn out maybe there's something personal in your world maybe you're worn out because of the culture maybe you're worn out because of everything that we're going to talk about in this series maybe you're just a little tired from the the squeezing and the pressure one thing we cannot forget our god is on the throne and he reigns and he will overcome and we will overcome by the blood of the lamb in the word of our testimony and so tonight i want you to sing this out as we get ready to pray build your faith tonight like those pastors outside of portland build your faith even when i don't see it even when i don't see it you're working even when i don't feel it you were getting sick you never stop you never stop [Music] you never stop [Music] you'll never stop [Music] you never stop working you never stop you never stop working we make a miracle work promise my god [Music] is [Music] i tell a lot of white house stories here after three years there it lingers with you for a long long long time impressions and so forth but i will never forget some of the imagery that the lord spoke to me through in those three years my first trip with the president was to new orleans louisiana and this was before cell phones and when we got to the hotel i started walking around all the corridors all these important people rushing around at every turn at every corner there was a telephone now it was highly restricted the secret service was keeping everybody out of the hotel except for the white house staff and everywhere you would turn there would be a telephone every corner every every corridor every hot every hallway there would be a telephone days before and i remember again before cell phones the us army signal corps would come to the hotel and they would place phones all over the place and you'd pick up that phone you just pick it up and the voice on the other end would say white house signal and all you had to do was to tell them uh the president wants to talk to mao zedong or wallace henley wants to talk to his shoeshine guy whatever uh and and they would connect you immediately they would connect you immediately and the lord was just talking to me today that's the nature of prayer everywhere everywhere everywhere you turn in life at every corridor every turn there's access to heaven let's do it tonight we make a miracle worker he's the promised keeper light in the darkness my god that is who you are oh way maker now yes we make a miracle work a promise [Music] my god that is who you [Music] my are that is who you are [Music] [Applause] hallelujah lord jesus we again say rem the heavens o god manifest your presence in the midst of your people in this place god let this be the furnace of intercession that ripples across the city and across this nation joined with many many others crying out to the throne of heaven let this be a season and a time that when we your people cry aloud in corporate unison and intercession hear our cries oh god hear our cries oh god in jesus name and everyone said amen you'll be seated you know it seems interesting that there is no coincidence with god you know even as we sang the song we may not always see him at work but he's working isn't he i was sharing today on a national call and i talked about synchronousity because it kept resonating with me this word that means the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection but then i wrote down these words god has a way of doing multifaceted multi things and simultaneous things that interconnect at the same time including with and for his people and situations that pertain to us how many have you ever been confronted in a situation where you thought god do you even hear me and then all of a sudden that suddenly moment and you know over 80 times the word suddenly is written in scripture i think it's 87 times but at least 80 times that word suddenly acts chapter 2 is a suddenly moment but you think it just all of a sudden just happened to happen god had already put everything in place the fact that all the known nations of the world were represented in jerusalem at that moment and when god showed up in that suddenly to us it was god already setting things in motion and god's about to do some things in suddenly ways it seems suddenly to us but god is already putting things in order it's no coincidence that tonight i believe is also at sundown was the beginning of yom kippur the day of atonement and as we get ready to hear jonathan signs i think what a great person to communicate with us tonight about the law and about the importance of the constitution and about the things that are pertaining to us because our nation was founded on judeo-christian fundamentals and the foundations of our faith and we see an unraveling of that the the cracking of our foundations but how many know that we have a god that's unshakable and if we set our hearts in order but the first of tishri which is was the beginning at sundown on sunday september 6 the 10 days of all and then tonight beginning yom kippur the day of atonement and then getting ready for the feast of tabernacles because the day of atonement the most holiest of days in the jewish calendar which is a great reminder to us is of the great salvation that we have our savior and our healer and our deliverer in the lord jesus christ because of the work of the cross and the power of the resurrection and because of that in our posture of our hearts we can tabernacle with the creator of the heavens and the earth it's that time right now i believe we take personal reflection but the first of history in nehemiah 8 verse 1 and 2 talks about that when everything else was scattered the people were scattered the walls of of of of the city was scattered nehemiah in that context was there and it says that the priest stood up with the law of god and began to recite the law the laws of god the commandments of god and as he began to declare the word and be declared the scriptures the people began to respond and a breakthrough began to take place they began to weep and to shout in open squares because the word the laws of god were being declared what a great reminder to us this month this month of history that we too get back to the foundations of god's word and that the living word would live in us as we read his word declare his word pray his word that we who are serving the living word jesus himself that an authority would begin to take place and the suddenlies of god would take place that would begin to spread across our personal lives our city our nation and around the world there's many things we could be focusing on there is tragedies all around the world there's earthquakes and tsunamis and the things of in the middle east and afghanistan there's so many things happening that can pull us aside but if we get back to the unshakable kingdom for this moment in this day of atonement can we come back to that posture saying god you're in control and you hear the cries of your people in fact i've been going over and over these scriptures here because it was also in the month of history on the 21st day of history that we read in haggai that god says after everything's been shaken up just know this the glory of the latter house shall be greater than the former that's another suddenly moment god just shows up it's a time to lift up god's word declare his word pray his word get our heart posture right before him as we come before him in this place of the holiness of god and say god would you do what you only you can do and here are some scriptures that i kept resonating in my spirit the last few days that i sent to pastor and to the pastoral team earlier today psalm 107 verse 28 29 says this they that's us cried out to the lord in their distress he delivered them from their troubles he calmed the storm and the waves grew silent and you can read later all of psalm chapter 37 but it concludes with verse 39 and 40 it says the salvation of the righteous is from the lord he is their strength in their time of trouble the lord shall help them and deliver them he shall deliver them from the wicked and save them because because they trust in him lord we say to you tonight we put our trust in you god there's so many needs here tonight in this very congregation right here depicting families that and connections all over this city and around the world god there's so many needs right now but you hear our cry in our time of trouble and you because we trust in you are moving on our behalf god i pray that you would set everything in order that we can receive when you begin to move that suddenly moment and the outpouring of your holy spirit and the glory of the latter house that will be greater than the former we thank you for a fresh anointing of your presence hear our cries oh god in jesus name now what i would like you to do before we have jonathan come is let's take some time to prayer pray how many of you right now have been overwhelmed in heart distressed and even things in your own home and family i get calls every day even talking to medical professionals and doctors today that are really struggling with these mandates many of them are for vaccinations but they're not for the legislation of forced mandates because it takes away freedoms many are struggling variously some who have been vaccinated being feel like they're being uh ridiculed by others who say no you shouldn't have a vaccine and those that are not taking vaccines feeling like they're being looked down upon because they're not wanting to take a vaccine for various personal reasons look at the end of the day what we do we must do in faith whatever we do we must do in faith that's right and we can't project our consecration in others but we can stand for what is legal and constitutional of our rights that we should not have to be forced to do anything that's our liberty and our freedom and from a spiritual standpoint in galatians 5 1 it tells us stand fast therefore in the liberty where christ has set you free and do not be entangled in the oaks of bondage if you're like me you've been in many conversations maybe you're overwhelmed if you're feeling overwhelmed right now we want to pray for you would you just stand right where you are say look i just need some prayer i'm going through some things i'm feeling really overwhelmed in my personal life in my family in my job maybe some even feel like they're being threatened that you will lose your job if you don't comply to certain things if you're going through something right maybe it's a physical element maybe you're believing for a miracle or breakthrough in your life how many know that god is still the master of the breakthrough pastor steve years ago did a series on that that god is the the belle parisime the master of the breakthrough how many know that god is still the same god is still the same yesterday today and forever he's still the master of breakthroughs regardless of what we see so if you have a need right now just step out into the aisles and i want others to stretch your hands or just maybe come around them just agree with them put your hand on their shoulders those who need prayer go into the aisles and maybe raise your hand and others will join with you because there's something about the power of agreement and just set your hand on them and i'm going to have john mance which is going to come as we agree together praying for breakthrough for jesus to be the master of your breakthrough whatever you need may be and john we just pray into that father the bible says in songs that you are a shield all around us that means that if we face attacks in front of us you're right there to protect us if we face attack behind us you're right there to protect us and to the right and to the left and today we claim that promise in the name of jesus we acknowledge that we are 100 dependent on you god come and do what you can do in every family represented in this house bring healing to those who need healing bring deliverance to those who need deliverance in the mighty name of jesus we pray to the king of kings the name that's above every other name the name that's above every disease the name that's above every attack of oppression and for those that need a job god open doors open the doors that need to be opened and shut the doors that need to be shut you make a way where there seems to be no way we need you lord hear us today from heaven hear our prayers let him rise up to the heavens like incense and be mixed with the altar of jesus christ and be sent out today with power and glory and anointing in the mighty name of jesus in the mighty name of jesus amen amen now let's get back to our seats for a moment and let's pray in a personal and corporate context even as they did throughout scripture in the month of history to dedicate the month in preparation to get back to god's word this isn't a time for us to be shamed or maybe we've gotten away from being untethered of staying in god how many know we need god's word we are beneficiaries of god's word in a moment let's just pray in agreement that even as the priest and nehemiah and throughout scripture held up god's laws and began to read the laws we know the commandments of god are foundational for us to be able to stand amidst the storms that we go through so as i hold god's word as a symbol here would we all agree right now lord help me to have a hunger for your word to get back to the laws of god i'm not talking about in some legalistic way i'm talking about loving god's word because his laws protect us and shows us the way to grace and that then we would have an appreciation for the laws of the land god i pray right now would you agree with me in prayer say jesus you are the living word and i pray you would fill me with the fresh hunger and desire and passion to get into your word to know you to know your character and your nature and your spirit god let your word be in me and help me to know how to pray your word and to live your word in jesus name amen amen [Music] sherry i want you to come and pray and just pray for us that in this day of atonement that we all would receive that sense of the great act of love on the cross of calvary by which we are still promised by god's presence and god's word salvation and health and deliverance and freedom no matter what goes on around us jesus is still on the throne would you pray on this day of atonement for a fresh revelation of his presence and the work of the cross father we come before you now lord i pray that every heart in this room and every heart that is watching would be open and receptive to your holy spirit god that we would see you in a fresh and new way that our eyes would be open that the blinders would be removed and any kind of hindrance would be taken away god we acknowledge that you are the king of kings and you are the lord of lords we acknowledge that you are greater than every circumstance we acknowledge that you are greater than every uh addiction you are greater than anything that binds us so god today we ask you right now that you would come and fill us fresh and new today father god let the wind of your spirit blow across this room and blow across this region and blow across this state father god that your holy spirit would come lord that people would be set free god that you would reveal yourself to them fresh and new in their homes and in their cars and on their jobs god that as you are revealed they would come to know you in a fresh and new way god we just ask you to move that we would see you for who you are that we would not be blinded by the things that are in front of us or the things that are weighing us down but that we would clearly see your goodness we would see that you are good and that you are with us and we are not alone so god i just thank you for today i thank you for the significance of today thank you god that you promised that when two or more are gathered in your name you're here and god we can trust you for that even when we don't see it we know you're still moving even when we don't see it we know you're still with us and we just thank you lord in jesus name amen [Music] through he is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] through [Applause] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] before we end this time i want to encourage you with something this is something i do this song it's been around for a while now and sometimes i'll be i'll be driving and maybe i'm frustrated or i just need to turn the radio off because it was just driving me nuts or or there's something happening in life or or this is just this kind of stuff is just driving me crazy and and uh and i just have to remind myself i have to remind myself through the storm he is lord lord of all and i i say this sometimes for me through my storm he is lord and i sing it again through my storm he is the lord maybe you need to sing this tonight through my storm he is lord through my storm through [Music] [Music] it is a great night to be at church once again if you're new here we just want to say thank you for joining us and you are about to be equipped i hope you are emboldened tonight and uh thank you pastor doug for that uh that word and leading us in prayer i know god is just going to continue to do great things over the next few minutes so we have a word from our pastor we wanted to share with you take a look when it comes to being americans there's nothing more important than knowing the rights that we have guaranteed to us by our constitution what's critically important is that we don't allow either those who are elected or those who are unelected as officials of the government to just do whatever they want and trample on those rights equally important is that there are no other groups either by pressure or by force that attempt to take away those rights that we have what's tragic is that if as americans we don't know our rights then how can we stand for them and so what's amazing today is how many americans don't know what their rights are so i invited jonathan to come and talk about that what i appreciate most about jonathan is that for the organization that he founded texas values is how active they are at the capitol on the issues that affect all of us as texans and even more than that is that in the in the cultural battles that i've been a part of in every single one jonathan didn't just uh issue his support from a distance but he showed up at the battle time i greatly appreciate that so would you welcome tonight jonathan science [Applause] good evening everyone and thank you pastor riggle for that wonderful introduction and we spent a lot of time together myself and your pastor over the years and really it's hard to find someone that's demonstrated the type of leadership for our state for your community when it comes to the biblical values that we all care about and we share you know i love contemporary christian music and so just to share a part of that worship with y'all tonight was really special to me and you think about some of these words when we slow them down right waymaker miracle worker promise keeper lying in the darkness how powerful they are i'm glad to be with you here in houston uh born and raised in houston in fifth generation texan myself and so it's always good to come home i live in the central texas areas i was sharing with someone before i came into the building into this room that i spent most of my adult life in the central texas area and the austin area and but still have a lot of family around this area and really there's a lot of things that have happened when the values we care about here in our own city in houston we've tackled some things we've come together we've been united sometimes we've been divided we've wrestled with a lot of these things and so it's easy for me to reflect on that and think about my own journey and how it ties into the law and policy work that i do for a non-profit organization called texas values as a matter of fact while i'm speaking this evening i'm going to have a clipboard passed around and if you'd like to learn more about the work we're doing you want to get informed on the issues of faith family and freedom by a christian organization the largest in the state of texas i invite you to fill that out and i'll collect that at the end thank you but it is good to come back home but it reminds me of you know where a lot of some of the work that i do now in law and policy started when i was a student at the university of houston law center and when i think about some of the things that we're going to talk about tonight and i do intend to share some information that i feel will be instructive and why i'll hope that maybe there's some things that i say that inspire you that you remember most of all i hope that you get information that you can take to heart and share with others and so during my time i'm going to pass a couple of things out too that are resources that i want you you can look at while i'm speaking you can also take with you and freely make copies of but when i think about coming back to houston and spending time here in this community where so much of my faith and my identity and who i am as a person and what matters to me was really formed i also have to think about how it almost never happened so for almost 17 years now i've been dedicated to working for christian values in the area of law and policy as a licensed attorney but before i even got to the point to start my practice of law to sit for the bar exam to walk across the stage and receive my law degree it was almost all taken away and i want to share this story with you because i want to give you a sense for how much i've experienced and can appreciate how important it is and what the law is and what the law says and how it relates to the principles and the values that we care about as christians so i went to law school to learn how to be a lawyer and advocate for issues of protecting life of religious liberty i was starting to hear stories about people that were praying over their meal at a public school or praying during a football game freely without the government forcing them but on their own and a lot of those rights being taken away ten commandments monuments crosses being literally torn down boarded up and i thought that maybe the sense of service that i had that was built into me with my christian faith that that was the calling that i wanted to answer of how i could serve others and stand up for these not only biblical rights but constitutional rights that our country was founded upon but before i could ever get to that point i found myself in the middle of a court case at the university of houston that related to the pro-life group that i was leading you see all we wanted to do was share information on public property just like other groups would do and not just any information information that is life and death so many people don't realize how a baby is formed in the womb in the stages that it goes through a lot of people during that time in their life in college find themselves pregnant and being pressured to maybe end that life but my christian faith motivated me to protect life but also to not be afraid to stand up for those principles and so but the university saw it differently well what's a good law student to do we sued them and you know it's sort of easy to talk about it now but back then it was really tough there were days where i didn't know if i was going to be allowed to continue to be on campus there was some real tension i was public enemy number one at the university of houston why because i simply wanted to exercise the rights i was being taught were guaranteed in our constitution and by the u.s supreme court in the very cases in classes i was learning about and from as a law student but i was a threat groups like ours to the university were a threat why because the information that we might share was powerful now thankfully we saw the issue through we went to court and we won and i learned some very important lessons and you know i like to get nostalgic when i think about houston and city and what it means to me but it's not probably all that different from any city that people may grow up in and you think about really wanting to take care of the people that are close to you and around you and that's what i try to do in the team that i lead at texas values with the law but you know i've spent some time here in houston making sure people know what the law is or or the power of it or the significance of exercising your constitutional rights and so before i ever said no i said yes to god's call to go into the field of law and policy to be the first in my family to go to law school and really i just said lord if you'll let me work on one case it'll be worth it and he's multiplied that quite a bit but i said yes but when i was on campus i said no i said no to the tyranny to the oppression to really the pressure to back away from what i believed in and so many other people did as well and as a result of that successful lawsuit and the event that we were able to happen there was a woman there who said no to the pressure she was receiving to have an abortion and instead she said yes to that life in her womb [Applause] but you know i can't help but hear those lyrics ringing through my ear in the song and in the storms right just a recent storm here in the city of houston and um you know going back to 1983 hurricane alicia i mean i just it it seems to be there a lot for this community but those redeeming moments are there too where we've come together this city's come together my team we came here right after hurricane harvey and spent some time spent a day with some recovery efforts the religious freedom that we have that's guaranteed in our constitution our law and policy brought this community together allowed ministries like samaritan's purse and others to come into so many communities the way that the constitution is written allowed the government to work with the church right they couldn't have done all those things on their own and so often that's when their the church is needed and answers the call and i'll never forget the house that we were a part of clearing that day after hurricane harvey there had been a lot of devastation there had been a death at the home but how much it mattered to them when they found that family bible and what a special moment it was to be a part of them with that the law is a teacher god's law is a teacher the laws that we stand for and we defend and protect in our country say something about who we are what we're about and what matters most to us you know it was kind of interesting going through that court case when i was a law student and hearing my first amendment professor talk about the very case that i was involved in what was which was certainly about the first amendment free speech religious liberty and also life but one of the things that i was taught in law school is cite your source how many times you'll hear people say well the law says this or you know i heard someone say the law says that and you can't do that that's illegal right and so you know i try to not do this as much i used to do this a little bit more right cite your source what what's he talking about what does that mean right and it reminds me of a scripture verse that is very important to me and always has been in a lot of my work proverbs 18 17 tells us he who presents this case first seems right until someone steps forth to challenge him how many times do we hear people whether it's a government official maybe your boss somebody that's an authority tell you the law says this or you're not allowed to do this and so often it's not true i had that experience on the university of houston campus the dean of students of all people telling me what the law was and trying to convince others even though court precedent suggested otherwise i could have kind of gone about my way our group could have gone about our way and really i was a group of one there was so much pressure put on our group it dwindled down to me um and i felt that tap on my shoulder it's just you but you're going to be enough it's your turn but we have those experiences sometimes there is a lot of pressure on all of us these days right a lot of uncertainty a lot of things that are concerning us and a lot of a new frontier if you will right government trying to tell you you can and cannot do this uh and so i'll sort of get a kick out of that sometimes to push back a little bit but we should we shouldn't just take it as true prove it show me that you know the law show me that this is true the power of no right to two words and funny i was thinking about this as i was driving in so the organization i lead we've got supporters in all 254 counties of the state and we've got a team of 12. most of them live in the greater austin area and our office is right there near the state capitol but some are in south texas north texas we've got someone here in sugar land and and others but we do a lot of work the state capitol who's been to the state capitol some fans we'll get a few more of y'all there i'll help you out with that but if you ever are in the particularly the house but sometimes the senate chamber and watch their activities sometimes they're not right by their desk where they can push a button to vote yes or no so one's yes two's no right sometimes it's not only just two letters it's two things and i'll see those things but that's all you got to do right in saying no to bad laws bad legislation incredibly important as a matter of fact i like to say that and many people believe this it's easier to kill a bill is what we call defeating a piece of legislation than it is a pass a good one but it's almost sometimes some of the most important work that we can do and i've got some handouts if we'll start to sort of hand those out there's one that i want to bring to your attention and this is a one-page document called the freedom to worship act so um tying in a little bit of biblical instruction in my time with y'all tonight if we'll go to galatians 5 13 it tells us for you were called to freedom brothers only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh but through love serve one another when we think about some of the things that are important to us as christians to have that freedom to worship and that's what this one first document i want to look at do we have okay they're being passed around they'll get to you in just a second the first one is called the freedom to worship and it's about a new law that's been passed in the state of texas called the freedom to worship act why because we reached a place last year where we had government officials forcing us to close our churches who would have thought a day like that would have happened can you believe it right um but galatians 5 13 makes it very clear how important that freedom is but what that freedom is used for right and we think about some of the recovery efforts some of the storms the things that have happened in our own city and other places that christian faith that we have that freedom to serve is not just ourselves and our lord but one another i i would argue in a lot of ways that's what we do best when we're needed most we serve one another we open up the doors whoever needs to come in who needs refuge if there's any place that needs to be open whenever an individual a group there's distress without the government interfering it's the church can i get an amen for that please i'm gonna turn into a preacher by the end of the night here i mean look you've got to sort of be a little bit of a preacher to do some of the work we do right you've got to be able to convince people the value in the significance of the things that you do so this one page document's very clear that the government can never force the church to close and as a matter of fact it doesn't just end here on november 2nd the entire state of texas gets to go to the ballot box to make sure this is not only a state law but it is in our constitution which makes it almost completely permanent all right don't forget that date tuesday november 2nd i'll have more to say about that as we get closer to that date hopefully pastor riggle will invite me back but i'm sure he'll be talking about it and we use sort of the phrase churches are essential when we talked about this law okay you heard me say it a minute ago the law is a teacher it says something about what we care about so you may say well the first amendment says we have a religious freedom isn't that enough for the government to recognize that they can't close the church do we really need a law that's so specific well apparently we do right i remember where i was at home with my family on a saturday night thinking about what the schedule would be the next day going to church how everything was kind of go when i got an email text message i don't remember how i got the message on social media that the city and the county where i lived the elected officials or government officials had ordered commanded that churches be closed starting at 2 am i think this was about 8 or 9 o'clock thank you for the five hours of notice not really that's how much some government officials respected the church y'all remember well the first time y'all heard about that happen of all nights and days saturday night it was the day before you know people go to churches on to church on other days obviously than just sunday as we're here today but it's the day right i mean and so i was on the phone quickly with people talking to some folks and friends at the attorney general's office hey i'm just going to let this stand right there was a it took people by surprise okay i remember i went to church the next day we weren't sure how we were going to handle it and how widespread it was and i remember the pastor at our church saying oh i didn't get that note what you know uh but very quickly everyone sort of started to fall in line right let's be good christians do we need to pull back a little bit maybe that's the right thing to do we'll close for a couple of weeks another week another week right then we got to easter that was hard right and for some government officials parking lot services were not even good enough they were trying to shut those down not in just in california right here in texas right we have this new state law because we want to make it clear that that never happens again it's not good enough for someone to say well yeah you know we would never do that cite your source it's now in state law and pretty soon we're going to have it at a stronger level in our state constitution now why does that matter just to kind of for a second not to get too legal ease on you but in order to have a state law you just need to have a majority of the house and the senate and then the governor signs it but when it's in the constitution to two-thirds majority you have to have a higher standard so it makes it harder that anytime in the future if things get really wild and go in in a bad direction for them to change that they would have to have a two-thirds majority then they'd have to have a constitutional amendment election several steps this is a way to almost make it permanent and in this one-page document just so you can see on the bottom it says texasfreedomtoworship.com that's a website you want to download this share it with friends um i think it's a critical source i mean california just finished fighting some of this battle you know i mean we passed our law several months ago it was not unanimous let that sink in for a second we have some elected officials in the state of texas that still think it's okay for the government to order a church to close i could talk a lot about that issue but i got a couple issues i want to cover with y'all tonight there's another document here that um i want to call your attention to as we talk about the significance of the law right and i mentioned that my organization the one i lead texas values were our office a couple of blocks from the capitol one of the phrases that you hear a lot there is government belongs to those who show up all right there was a raise of hands earlier how many people have been to the capitol not everybody raised their hand that's okay we'll have opportunities as a matter of fact a special session starts on monday still an opportunity to go see your elected representatives but you don't have to go to the capitol to do that you can do that right here in the area um but it does matter who shows up that says something maybe that means how many people are actually for or against something so our team shows up every day at the capitol when there's a session in session to make sure your voice is heard and so on but it really there's tremendous value when we can get a strong number there and you know look i could give us several examples i gave one earlier about sort of my own testimony and part of the reason i shared that with y'all because you know sometimes you'll hear like a guest speaker and you know they seem to have a lot of connections with power and influence so maybe it seems like oh well you know that's sort of easy for them to talk about these issues you know they know a lot of people they got all the experience and connections i didn't really know anybody when i was a law student at the university of houston i mean i did have you know family in the area and some friends and i might have thought i had some people an influence but you know a lot of people abandoned my effort when i was a student and i'm not sore at them i understood but i really stood alone in a lot of ways but i knew god was with me and so i shared that with you earlier because i want you to know whoever it is you know whatever your position is you have a place of significance and you have the ability to make a difference i didn't know all of that was going to happen to me i knew what i believed in what i cared about but what i did know is when it happened i felt a strong sense that if i don't do something this is going to continue and other people are going to have their rights taken away so i'm going to stand here and say no to this oppression this tyranny and no to being overwhelmed by fear to really step back and instead trust god so the next handout i want you to see is uh it's called the texas heartbeat law how many of y'all heard about that all right okay couple more hands [Applause] getting a lot of attention uh the past couple of weeks um jeremiah chapter one verse five before i formed you in the womb i knew you it's there right we know it you haven't seen that verse before go and read it yourself powerful right god's design fingerprint it's all there right there's something just universal if you will about a heartbeat what happens when we're in distress someone goes to the emergency room someone we care about is struggling and we've got that moment where we're not sure if they're gonna make it we're looking for the pulse they're checking for a heartbeat it is a universal indicator of life why should that be any different for the baby inside the womb a lot of people didn't realize that right wow the baby's heart is beating inside the woman at such an early stage some say five six weeks and i go back to what i was saying earlier about the law being a teacher what does it say about us as a society as a people where we draw these lines about what is okay and not okay to the most vulnerable right and look i get it circumstances can be challenging i saw those as a young kid in my own family when a child is coming into the world sometimes unexpectedly but you're not alone you know there's close to 200 pregnancy resource centers in the state of texas who knew that just about one for every county these are non-profit places with free resources free services to walk alongside that woman with her child with that family that couple and not just at birth but but moving forward but we've got to start with the right standard and unfortunately for some people what they consider right and wrong is based primarily on what the law says is okay you know i mentioned that event earlier that we had in the work i've done in myself communicating with people about the life issue you know a lot of times you'll find that people just are not aware of certain information that you're able to share with them on some of these issues right you start talking about them and they're like wow i didn't know that i wasn't aware of that sort of opens up the conversation and you really get to a a very interesting place and i get that that's okay maybe you've never thought about some of these issues before maybe they've never touched you personally i mean maybe you feel convicted one of the people we work with a lot uh is abby johnson she is a former director of a planned parenthood clinic one of the the most the largest performers of abortions taking of innocent human life of all entities in our country she was one of their leaders at their facility in college station and eventually she saw these things happen enough to go wait a minute there's something's not right here and she left that movement and now is one of the strongest voices of life but for a lot of people they think well look we have this court case i heard of roe versus wade it says it's legal i mean truly it can't be wrong i mean how would the supreme court really be okay with the taking of an innocent human life that goes against really our foundations of our american principles right life so they're surprised often when they're like wow i guess the law does allow that some states all the way up to birth and in some states a baby can be born as a result of a failed abortion and they'll allow that life to be ended let that sink in for a second we're not even talking about an abortion if you will by that name at that point and you can imagine what that might feel like right if you're someone who didn't have some of this information you sort of been deceived by all this time right how can that be how are we doing this how are we allowing this to happen i don't know if you're aware of this but there are close to 55 000 abortions in the state of texas every year 55 000 right that's close to the capacity of the football stadium where the houston texas play can you imagine in one year wiped out right i get a little emotional about this sometimes myself born about nine months after january 1973 when the roe vs wade decision was cited i recognize that dates me it's okay it's not exactly a real proud legacy either right the roe vs wade decision is a texas case who knew that right started out of dallas ed wade was the district attorney in the dallas county the woman in that case norma mccorvey never had an abortion who knew that right interesting very fascinating case and her life she has since passed away she became pro-life so i really want to encourage you to use this source to educate people because it's probably one of the most historic moments for law and life that we experienced a couple of weeks ago on september 1st when the texas heartbeat law went into effect yes okay in our generation okay so what are we saying no to we're saying no to death we're saying no to taking away an opportunity to taking away trusting that god has a plan for every life before i formed you in the womb i knew you we're disrupting that right we're saying no to all the fear and uncertainty that sort of goes along with a child coming into the world even sometimes in the you know maybe if you might think the best of circumstances whatever the circumstances may be in that real fear of no oh it's out there and saying yes to abortion saying no to a life potential something to to be excited about right i mean look when the baby comes it's pretty special right i mean sometimes you know people can be very you know their circumstances are challenged but boy it's something just miraculous right and it and it can fill you up with a lot of optimism that child right precious innocent special that's what we're doing to our fellow human beings every year 55 000 before the heartbeat law now some estimates say that 85 maybe 90 a little more percent of abortions will not take place maybe even higher depends on how things go but there's an average of 150 abortions every day in the state of texas so we're now at day 15. i did the math that's a little over 2200 lives that have been saved [Applause] the law is a teacher not only for us but for everyone else how we're able to teach them what it means why it matters if that's where the line is drawn if you will and that's what the law says it tells us this matters and this is how much we care and this is who we are and why it's important to protect it um so i want to make sure you've got that handout uh i want to uh share a little bit more with you i know i'm at i see them at zero time they told me i could go a little bit longer i'm just telling you okay i heard the doors are locked so uh and i was like really i only have about 10 minutes of things to say i have no idea what i'm going to say that's what happens when you bring me into houston you know speaking of saying no there's two more issues really i want to share with you that are instructive about the power of no the power of what we individually but collectively say is right in our law and you know i don't know if i've really got to share this yet since i've been to the church a few times but you think about certain friendships and relationships you have sometimes they're forged in difficult circumstances of challenges of uncertainty and so a handful of years ago five six years ago the leaders in the city of houston wanted to force everyone to obey a law that whether it was in a private building in your private business wherever you were that you had to allow men to go into women's bathrooms right and who knows what else the bathroom ordinance not what happened in the capitol that was later when we tried to make sure that private business owners had the right to say the government could not make them do that they could decide on their own the city of houston right it was such a big deal that your pastor had his sermon subpoenaed right he was kind of an outlaw he refused talk about a no it's kind of an interesting note right no i won't comply with a subpoena but i'll give you my sermon if you really want to know what it says but not because the government said i had to and that's important right think about that concept for a minute i just want you to go with me for a second here that's what freedom is that's what god's freedom is for us he doesn't want to make you be a christian he wants you to choose it he wants that freedom it's not real right i was thinking about this as i was standing here in the front row i mean one of the biggest no's that we can say is no to sin and look it's a struggle for all of us including myself what a powerful no that is and sometimes we can be convinced that it's just it's just too hard i mean we you know we're human what are you gonna do um we can't say no to sin but here it was 2015 all the attention on the city of houston right there was a ballot initiative right this this was a lot of different chapters of this effort and this situation but it all came to a head when we got to go to the ballot box we got to vote the people of the city of houston got to vote on what we would say the law would be and what it would say about us as a community i remember gosh i was in the central texas area at the time but i just knew this was gonna matter more than some other things and there was pastor riggle right um maybe next time i'm here i'll show you all the picture of him together he and i and i had like this bull horn this megaphone i mean it was like the epicenter of everything in our country at the time there was sort of a presidential election looming candidates were talking about it wow it was a big story and i remember about a week going into the media had decided our side we were going to lose the you know the die had been cast whatever you want to say it they had already done some polling it was over and i remember telling people on the conference call or whatever do not believe them say no to the media lies right all right i mean and how wrong is that sometimes you're going into election and someone's telling you this is the result you don't think that discourages people i mean you think about that happens sometimes right our polls close at seven here in the state of texas on election day and this will happen in november second and but early voting results will come out like at 701 there are people still in line sometimes that maybe they'll leave because well you know they already said they called it for whoever so anyway we said you know what no we're going to press forward we still have time we're going to prove them wrong and boy did we 61 39 we were victorious and that was a big no it was it really was and and you know as far as i know that was six years ago there still is not a policy like that in the city of houston even though people said oh that's just one vote they're going to come back and do it but i was there with pastor riggle and i really enjoyed it because the role that pastors can have when it comes to these type of issues is almost higher and stronger than any other i've seen i see it at the capitol all the time i see grown men you saw me here earlier getting emotional brought to tears when a pastor would come pray with them at the capitol i don't have that effect when i'm there you know sometimes they get they might get scared or they might you know i don't know what kind of reaction they have sometimes they might they sometimes they yell at me i mean and you know because they're not happy that we just had 500 people call their office and say you really should vote this way anyway i do try to encourage our supporters to have a christian approach when they contact their elected officials but you know they might get spirited sometimes and so i've seen pastor riggle do that time and again not just then you know right in front of city hall right um i remember there was an attorney that they were working with at the time you know he said boy they said sometimes you just can't beat city hall sometimes you do when we all come together and it doesn't have to be a political issue i mean look it's in the bible uh mark chapter 10 verse 6 genesis 5 2 that he made them male and female there's a difference there is that doesn't mean people don't have their struggles okay and i do want to encourage you as christians to be considerate to that have those conversations i sit next to people all the time at the capitol that completely disagree with some of the things that uh my biblical principles and you know they're living their life a whole different way but can have the conversation i care about people is it interesting an elected official from the houston area as a matter of fact not this part of houston but and he asked me jonathan you know why do y'all why are you here at the capitol all the time why do y'all work on these issues i mean he just seemed to think you know because i guess he knew we weren't making a whole lot of money but as a nonprofit organization and i said representative we care about people and you think about the law being a teacher i know for some people they're going to follow what the law says i don't want the law to lead them in a direction of a destruction or heartache or struggle you go through a sex change a gender transition up to 80 to 90 percent of the people that go through those changes regret them and you can't go back in most of the circumstances man that's tough the same thing with an abortion and look my heart goes out to people that have had that experience i am not here to judge anyone on that there is forgiveness there's reconciliation but it's a tough issue because you can't bring that baby back i know that's hard so i'd rather them not go through that but the bible is instructive on these issues and i think it's incumbent on us to reflect that as often in law and policy as we can as a matter of fact i mentioned that there is a special session that starts on monday what's the special session we have a regular session every two years from january through may in our state legislature but sometimes when there are still things that don't get done during that time they'll have a special session after that we're at our third okay so some of that you know you saw with people going to dc and all that i won't get political on y'all my point is we're sort of in overtime third overtime for football and sports fans out there there is a piece of legislation and actually it's really very simple that when it comes to athletics particularly in high school students play on the sport that corresponds to their birth certificate closest at birth so how they were born that's the sport they play in that doesn't mean some people can't play sports that means that's the ones that you go to we're gonna say no to this philosophy and this movement that says there's not a difference between a male and a female there is and let me tell you when you get into high school and particularly into college athletics there can be a huge difference an athletic advantage without question okay i'm not a physician i'm not a biologist i'm not a scientist okay uh i am a juris doctor i never say that you ever hear a lawyer say that i'm a doctor we don't say that even though it's a doctorate degree i'm not a doctor in that sense but there's plenty of them that have already said it in the senate and the house texas house hearings and you don't really have to think that much about it i mean we sort of already know but there's plenty of the science to back it up as a matter when you start talking about science boy it comes really clear the muscle mass all different things that so there's a law that's being considered that just makes it clear we got to have a standard in place right so back to my point earlier about well why do we need a law that protects religious freedom for churches doesn't the first amendment already protect that it's sort of this situation where if we don't have something that's about what's happening now it's left up to interpretation no one really thought you needed to have a policy or a law like this before but the way our times are going and there are documented cases more and more all the time of this happening biological boys that are competing in women's sports and for some people that's their only opportunity to further their education is their athletic abilities sometimes it also provides a very significant experience for them that competitiveness it's important for us to not be able to not be afraid to say no in these situations and sometimes the law does that very clear but but it's not just about saying no and i love how pastor and riggle's got the no and then the yes right there's a there's a yes there what you're saying yes to and what we're oftentimes saying yes to is really just the truth that's right right but there is an element of caring about people when you tell them the truth even sometimes even though it's hard but it certainly matters in this situation so i i you know if you're if the clipboard is coming around you'll get some information about that issue from our organization about this law that's being proposed we call it the save women's sports law somebody's got to say no somebody's got to say there's a standard because right now there are a lot of people that feel like folks can just do whatever they want and it's not going to matter and it does and so this is the role that we often play in society all right so two more things we've got a nice slick handout we have a project called the church ambassador network so trying to figure out how we deal with some of these cultural issues how do we foster a society and an environment where government leaders in the church sort of appreciate the significant roles that they both play the the kind of catchphrase we were using with that law was right churches are essential we heard a lot about that what's essential and all this kind of stuff but if we were actively engaging with our elected officials and government leaders they would already know that the church is essential they would know we can't close the church because we're probably going to use them if there's a natural disaster or whatever the case may be or you know they're significant to the community they allow for people to have healthier families and to have community time together and be productive citizens so one way that we're doing that is a project called the church ambassador network and this is really about saying no to i'm not trying to get involved and be a lobbyist at the capitol and saying yes to but the church for many of us has a pastoral role for elected officials so this uh earlier this year the leader of our church ambassador network brian english it was a special moment when i was there with him and i got to sit back as sort of our lobbyist and president and watch him as a faith leader walk through the bible with our lieutenant governor of the state of texas dan patrick now governor patrick lieutenant governor patrick is a christian but it i could just tell in my opinion it was a nice moment for him to have to step back from his responsibilities as a lawmaker and so on and just be in the word who knew that you could read the bible at our state capitol the constitution protects that there are so many things like that that people do not realize are protected in law and that we're just not exercising we pray all the time at the capitol we'll have prayer meetings and gospel songs and in our state capitol public property it's got to be treated fairly it's got to be treated equally that means you can go into an elected official's office and open up the bible who would love to do that would that be special wow and you know what's interesting our experiences they really like the idea because it's not someone coming in they're going i need you to pass this law right i just want to pray with you i just want to open the bible up and talk about what god's word said you know and whether they're one party or the other they're under a lot of pressure and they appreciate the church ambassador network is the way to say no to fear in this warped and inaccurate notion that there is a separation of church and state those words are not in our constitution and the supreme court has never said that the way it's supposed to work is we as a people cannot engage with our government and proclaim and preach the word of god in our public buildings as a matter of fact that's exactly what it allows us to do without punishment so we've got a way that you can do that and exercise that and bring tremendous value to people last thing i want to say because i think pastor riggle is such a great speaker and you didn't get to see him in person tonight but you can see him in person at an event we're having in a week and a half in austin called the faith family and freedom forum it's the largest educational event on christian values in the state of texas pastor riegel will be one of our speakers you think i get fired up talking about the government closing a church down wait till you hear what he has to say about it i'm sure you've heard a little bit of that already before but we've got over 30 speakers at this event including governor greg abbott lieutenant governor dan patrick we heard some great worship music who's waymaker michael w smith we're bringing danny gokey to this event any danny gokey fans okay oh my gosh as i was telling y'all earlier i love contemporary christian music i get fired up right when he just i mean he's got a spirit and a bounce and an energy okay it's going to be a great hills baptist church i don't know if pastor danny foreshoot there knows it but we're going to raise the roof okay friday when daddy coke is there but it's a great event because you will find that there are so many people in this state that believe in god's principles just like you do and they also draw strength and energy from people that are saying no to the tyranny no to the government telling you you've got to do certain things in order to be healthy and safe put your trust more in the government than in our god and they're going to say yes to freedom and talk about how to exercise that freedom and how to make sure that we continue to have laws that reflect that so i'm excited about this event the fourth year that we've done it and i'd love for you to be a part of it and we still have tickets available so i invite you to consider that and if that's not good enough the author of the heartbeat law center brian hughes he's going to be there you talk about some experiences that he has had that man has not slept in two weeks i bet you he's gone worldwide in some of the interviews but it's not just that it's the stories that he can tell you about the difference it's making in people's lives the lives that that are being saved as i like to say when it comes to humanity it gets down to the heart of the matter so i want to conclude with that and i just want y'all to know how grateful i am that you give me an opportunity to be here tonight to speak to share a little bit from the bible that connects with these issues of law and policy hopefully you learned something that you didn't know before raise your hands if you heard something tonight that you learned you never heard before that you can take somewhere all right nice that might be a little over 50 i'm doing pretty good that's what we try to do at texas values educate motivate and activate and you know i'll conclude by as a fifth generation texan i get pretty fired up and excited about what i think makes texas great but from where we came the values of texas i submit to you have always been faith family and freedom but we get all you know um spirited ourselves when we start talking about come and take it and you know all these kind of things about us as texans let me tell you there's a lot of people that are trying to come here and take it don't not see that for a minute we have an important role to play right now in our society and our community in this generation whether you're young somewhere in the middle old we all have a significant role to play i want to end with a reminder of that story i told you all about at the beginning of the experience i went through at the university of houston and i will tell you all without a doubt when that issue came to me i remember telling god i'm not ready i thought you were going to have me be the lawyer and the advocate and you know then and it was very clear he wanted me to learn what it's like to be the client what it's like to know that you've got to depend on him even if you've got to stand alone and stand for truth and there were moments where i thought everything that i'd worked for for so many years sacrificed worked my way through school all of that was going to be taken away but i knew that his word and his principles mattered more and if that's the price that i was to pay then so be it i wanted to stand with god on his principles and have faith in that and he brought me through it every step of the way and he never fails thank you all very much thank you so much for being here mr signs uh uh before we dismiss uh show up stand up one of the ways to do that is to be apprised of what's happening in texas values with what they're a part of hopefully you fill that out that clipboard and and make sure you're seeing those emails that come through and know what's happening in austin another way to do that is fill out uh the connect card and the chair back in front of you especially if you're somewhat newer to the church you can sign up to receive emails and uh and text just a couple times a week on the text thing uh to remind you of the big stuff but the emails have details on what's happening in the church we have uh an important meeting coming up on a saturday uh regarding all of this with our faith votes ministry and you can find out more about that on gracewoodlands.com but but uh sign up and be a part be be in the loop of what's happening and i love what what you said was it uh government belongs to those who show up isn't that good so i was in california when gavin newsom last year on a saturday said hey churches don't sing you can't sing because of everything right i was in in california getting ready to lead worship at a church the next morning so i had a i had a pastor call me and he's in california he was in california as well and he knew i was a worship guy and said is there a way we can have a worship time maybe that doesn't include singing maybe we can just we can just you know just you know meditate and just be in minute you know you know what my uh response was no no there's not there's not [Music] you can you don't even have to be a biblical scholar to work that one out and so we started that service with you know sing a little louder right you know so so but we got to show up and and that's a pastor and he wasn't sure some of you parents are gonna reach a point where you have to stand up and show up at your schools and your school board meetings are you gonna do it i know it's tough when you leave this place and you go out into your world and you're at your place of employment and it's just a barrage but one thing that you can do is just like i said be apprised of what's happening here at this house and in organizations like texas values and that will that will encourage you and keep equipping you and embolding you to fight this fight because here's the thing and jonathan will tell you this is not a political fight now some of the battles have to be done in the political realm with people like jonathan but this is not this is a fight for moral biblical values in our state and in our nation and who better than christian people followers of jesus to go ahead and stand up and speak out on those things when we know we know the truth amen all right well uh before i dismiss here we have chad robert show on uh on sunday mma fighter champ guy he's amazing check out his uh his title real fast no to entitlement and victim mentality and yes to personal responsibility that's his title he told me that on the phone and he is pumped to be here uh you do not want to miss this is an incredible one to invite friends and family to so make sure we get here let's pack the place out as always thank you for your faithfulness and giving you can give your tithes and offerings as you leave the auditorium with the ushers there god bless you we'll see you on sunday [Music]
