so it looks like there's been a massive dump of data basically pertaining to how Google does creates their search algorithm and so now we will know how Google search works uh or maybe not basically this is just a random ass dump of data that may be accurate up to the moment maybe a year old they may be changing all of this stuff in a couple of days but for at least a couple of minutes there's 2500 pages of information out there that might show you how to game the Google system uh just a little bit better one of the problems we have with Google and their search algorithm is we simply do not know how it works and when I say that I don't actually mean that it needs to be open source again I'm not a huge open source proponent open source isn't bad but I don't think it gets you what people think it gets you but one of the big things is basically just understanding uh what what they're what they're looking for basically how things are weighted with the algorithm how when they take a look at a web page how they decide where it should sit in the ranking again not not necessarily explaining how the SQL statements or whatever work on the back end but just understanding the weights and the triggers and all that kind of stuff and that's that and frankly we do not know and Google has basically come out and said we're not going to tell you because we don't want people to quote unquote game the system now if this was any other industry gaming the system would simply be the concept of using the system right but you know Google wants to keep us jumping and guessing this has been a big problem in the SEO world again I used to do SEO back in the day SEO used to have a pretty simple set of rules to go by and then Google changes and changes and changes and changes and changes and changes and one of the big issues for websites is they get so much traffic uh from SEO basically from organic search and then when Google changes their algorithm all of their traffic can basically disappear in a day and they don't even necessarily understand why which is a bit of a crap show again when we talk about big Tech again to be clear I'm not talking about most of this should be open source and transparent to that degree but I do believe that the government should come in and force more transparency on these basic Services uh that are fundamentally important for businesses and how they operate again if you had let's say a computer repair store a restaurant or whatever and you were always showing up number one you've been showing up for number one for two years and you thought things were going well and then all of a sudden overnight you're not even on the first page it's not that Google needs to put you back to the first page but you should be able to understand why you got dropped off and how you can change it right at this point even things as basic as organic search I mean this is this is an infrastructure this is a utility at this point in time in the modern world again it would be like if you didn't if you don't understand how white pages work what's a white page anyways back in the day we used to have these books yes we didn't didn't call it duck scene back then but we had these big books that have people's names with their addresses and their phone numbers and those books got sent to every household now imagine right and there's Yellow Pages and yellow pages had had the business uh directory now imagine if you got one of these books and you wanted your name in the book but you literally didn't know how to put your name in the book maybe you go and talk to a guy maybe you pay somebody money maybe you jump up and down on one leg and tap your head and say please Google please Google three times right what if you didn't know how to get your your information into those particular books and that's basically what we've got with Google is again we've got this essentially a search utility that almost everybody's using again the number one search engine in the world um with no transparency and so now apparently we've got a little bit maybe kind of sort of some transparency uh Google won't comment on a potentially massive leak of its search algorithm documentation a reported leak of 2500 pages of Internal Documentation from Google sheds light on how search the most powerful Arbiter of the internet operates uh an explosive leak that purports to show thousands of pages of internal documents appears to offer an unprecedented look under the hood of how search works and suggests that Google hasn't been entirely truthful about it for years and so this is the interesting thing not only that they didn't tell us about how it works but they actually lied about how it works uh Rand fishkin who worked in SEO for more than a decade says a shared Source shared 2500 pages of documents with him with a hop that reporting on the leak would counter the lies that Google employees has shared about how the search algorithm works the documents outline Google's search API and break down what information is available to employees according to fisim uh the contents of the leak are also not necessarily proof that Google uses specific data and signals it mentions for search rankings rather the leak outlines what data Google collects from web pages sites and searchers and offers indirect hints to SEO experts about what Google seems to care about as SEO expert Mike King wrote in his overview of the documents the leaked documents touch on topics like what kind of data Google collects and uses which sites Google elevates for sensitive topics like elections how Google handles small websites and more some information in the documents appears to be in conflict with public statements by Google Representatives according to fishkin and King and so again this is kind of the Curious Thing like what is a utility right there's this whole thing going on with neutrality right so so if you have telephone lines so so hardwired telephone lines right the government came in there are all kinds of Telco laws about how telephone lines had to be run and how they had to be distributed and uptime and all that kind of thing well data comes in Datacom um and you start dealing with cable internet and DSL and all that kind of thing and basically the companies don't want that to be considered a utility they just want you to buy the product and then you'll get whatever level of service they decide that they're going to give you and they don't have to give you any transparency but the thing is again with so much being on the internet nowadays again everything from YouTube videos to Voiceover IP calls to things like text messaging social media all that kind of stuff right the the uh the FCC the Federal Communications Commission has come in and said no uh basically there should be Network neutrality that that basically Datacom should fall under the laws of uh as it pertains to Telecom for this type of stuff right because it is a utility so an interesting thing to be thinking about in the modern world is this whole question of what is a public utility and when you first think about it with search you probably don't think of search as a public utility it's just search right I remember lyos I used to use lyos that was my favorite search engine back in the day but likeo Al Vista or Yahoo or Bing it's really Bing duck ducko and uh Google anymore but again you just think about them as products that's not a utility and so you until you start thinking about it but yeah but if you needed to figure out who to call about your utility bill if your electric goes out at your house how are you going to find the phone number to call the utility company to figure out what's going on probably going to be Google search so at what point does Google search become a utility just like electricity just like water just like uh you know data Communications and the rest of it and what's curious ious here is if they're not only just withholding information about how search works but they're also lying about it that brings up some very very very interesting questions uh quote lied is harsh but it's the only accurate word to use here King writs while I don't necessarily fault Google's public represent representatives for protecting their proprietary information I do take issue with her efforts to actively discredit people in the marketing Tech and journalism worlds who have presented reproducible discoveries so even when people have figured out how some of this stuff works SEO Works Google says well that's not really how it works uh some details in link documents call into question the accuracy of Google's public statements regarding how search works one example cited by fiskin and King is whether Google Chrome data is used in ranking at all Google Representatives have repeatedly indicated it doesn't use Chrome data to rank pages but Chrome is specifically mentioned in sections about how websites appear in search uh in the screenshot below which I captured as an example the links appear below the main vogue.com URL may be created in part using Chrome data according to the documents and uh so yeah then it just kind of goes on with some more information there so this could be interesting again from a technical standpoint I have a feeling they're going to screw with it even if this was accurate the moment that this article was written I have almost no doubt that Google is already screwing with how their algorithm works so that whatever is in here here doesn't work how you think it's going to work but I do think that there is a a a larger question here though again about that whole idea of one when does a technology become a utility and when does it go when does proprietary information go from Simply being you know a trade secret uh to being some something that should be more transparent so everybody understands how the systems work again if you're a pizza shop there's this whole idea of but what about the spammers but the weird part about that and again Google's been getting worse and worse I'll tell you something weird right I I crap on a lot of Technologies mainly because they're at the top of my head right I crap on blockchain blockchain is a fine database system but you need it in like half a percent of use cases that's the reality right again VR I have no idea why kids want to suction and cut uh monitors to their face right AI again I basically stopped using AI like I rarely actually use AI pops up all over the place anymore but I don't actually use it right so so I talk about that kind of thing right because that's front and center in my mind there's a lot of these other Technologies again that have kind of wandered away I don't really use them as much anymore you just don't think about them because they've been around for a couple of decades and one of the things that I'll tell you completely honestly in 2024 I really don't use Google search a whole hell of a lot the only reason that I use much of Google search at this point in time is literally for uh for these news articles right so uh so basically if something is behind a pay wall I need to find a news article that's not f a pay wall uh or if I need to do like a little additional research that's the only reason I really use Google search very much at this point in time again back back in 2000 we didn't know all the pizza shops that were around we didn't know all the restaurants that were around we didn't know a lot of the stuff that was around and so we were going on a Google and we were searching for a whole bunch of stuff now in 2024 basically know what the restaurants are I know what the things are looking for it's amazing at this point in time how how much less I suppose you could say uh there's a relevancy uh for search in this modern world and uh so I'm kind of curious like with all of this where that goes I don't know I got lost I had a point what was my point I don't know what my point was I had a point I had a point do you remember what my point was I don't do this very often I don't get completely lost with my point very often but I do but I do anyways you're just getting it live you're just getting it real you think I'm going to jump cut you think I'm GNA jump cut oh hell no that takes work that takes work I don't do work around here I'm a grifter I'm a grifter every time I have to junk jump cut something that's that's a second in my life that I'll never get get back again any who whatever I meant to say what do you think about Google's reported link of 2500 uh pages of documentation do you still care about SEO anymore do you still care that much about Google honestly like how relevant is just the Google search engine for you anymore uh put your thoughts down below if you like these videos make sure to give us a thumbs up subscribe leave a comment down below and if you want to throw a couple of dog biscuits
