hey guys welcome back to the show and on this episode i'm going to be talking about a film that even though is classified as science fiction still presents a scenario that could very well happen it could be very real and very dangerous for all of us a very real and possible danger what's that movie called again a clear and present danger possibly it's gog from 1954. now i'm willing to bet that a lot of you are sitting at home right now without a care in the world no real concern that at any moment enemies could launch an attack involving signals and robots and planes and a bunch of stuff that i don't really understand but it could mean the end of all life as we know it and that's exactly what this movie is about so listen up and pay attention your lives depend on it maybe the movie starts at an underground base where these scientists are working with this monkey what are they working on you ask well they put the monkey in this chamber and drop the temperature until the monkey is completely frozen and then they raise the temperature again to try and revive the monkey and my god it actually works this means they can freeze people before they send them into space and that will help them survive the trip or something i just think it's amazing you know that back then they were this close to freezing and reviving people you know this movie came out back in 1954 back then the pinnacle of freezing and reheating technology was the swanson tv dinner that's quite a jump to go from a couple slices of turkey to all of this but honestly the idea of freezing yourself and then thawing yourself out in the future sounds cool but i think it would actually kind of suck at first i think it would be amazing you know to see how the world's changed and all of that but once that kind of wore off i think it would just be really disappointing seriously think about it imagine someone from 1950 was like all right freeze me for 70 years yes thawed me out in the year 2020 the future imagine that trade-off you know of seeing all this new cool technology but also seeing how depressing stuff god at the same time anyways it seems like it was a complete success so they take the monkey away and dr kirby goes into the supply room leaving dr hubertus alone in the freezing chamber when suddenly the door closes and seals shut and the computer starts dropping the temperature now i know what you're thinking this looks like the work of a vengeful ghost probably a monkey ghost like you know a past test subject that died during the experiments and now it's out for revenge which would actually be really interesting but that's not what's going on here trust me the explanation is nowhere near as cool as a monkey ghost which is something i think we should see more of in movies just think of all the hilarious hijinks look at all the crazy stuff they did with monkeys and chimps back in the 90s now imagine if they were ghosts that that's going to put some asses in the seats anyways dr shepard is called in to investigate all these mysterious deaths that keep happening in this underground base because damn it they might have a traitor in their midst in comes joanna with these miniature radar beacons that they found hidden throughout the base and they start passing them around because you know i guess it wouldn't be a good idea to seal the evidence and protect it so that maybe you can check these things for any fingerprints and then cross-reference any prints you find with everyone's prints in the base i mean they should have them all on file this place is super secure i mean they analyzed dr shepard's fingerprints when he walked into the base and this isn't no dog and pony show i mean look they're using an overhead projector which now you're like you know who cares it's just a light and a mirror and a lens well back then that was some pretty high-tech stuff i bet one of those overhead projectors probably cost ten thousand dollars and weighed 300 pounds things were built to last back then and they were also built extremely heavy everything was like lead or steel or you know and you don't even have to look that far back to see evidence of that just look at crt tvs from the 80s and even 90s you ever tried carrying one of those things by yourself it was like it was like lifting up a small civil war cannon miniature radar beacons beautiful precision we found them hidden they were sending out a signaling code it's obvious they were designed to guide in a bomb so they're all like holy crap even though we're so far underground if they drop a hydrogen bomb on us we're all dead could happen at any time see the sense of urgency back then in the 50s with with bombs and war and stuff and that's uh now we still have that sense of urgency but it's more just like holy what did someone say online anyways david gets dressed in his underground base outfit and look it turns out he and joanna have been dating this whole time my god this whole place is just one underground pile of secrets who knows what else is gonna happen i don't know i just hope it's not super disappointing because i'm expecting this and that this is going to be pretty intense so inside the base they're conducting all these experiments to see how the human body will deal with space travel keep in mind this movie came out before anyone had been in space which is kind of crazy when you think about it you know in less than 70 years we went from geez how are we gonna get people into space to hey this guy's got a lot of money he can go oh wait this guy's got a lot of money too and he wants to prove that his dick is bigger than his dick so now he's gonna go and look at this this is the space station they're building and it's all powered by the sun but not in the way you think this mirror reflects and focuses the sunlight which boils a tube of mercury which creates steam so yeah this is a steam-powered space station which some of you are probably laughing at right now but you know what at least they were coming up with ideas what have you done for the advancement of space travel lately and look they're really going into detail about a bunch of this stuff see they've got david looking at the sun right now you're probably thinking when are they gonna get to the robot and the fire well hey now i'm sure all of this is very important information crucial to the plot i mean it's absolutely critical that as an audience you know all of the stuff that goes on down here in detail the sun's rays are super powerful and again by reflecting the sun's rays we can light stuff on fire we've already mentioned this but here look you can actually see the fire this time and we have all different sizes of mirrors look see this is what would happen if we took a really big one and aimed it at a city that's right it would set things on fire because again that's what happens when things get really hot oh you think you're safe just diving into the ocean well think again look we can just boil the ocean i'm sure the movie is taking so much time with this because it's going to come into play later in a major way i can't wait for what's bound to be an epic action sequence involving sun rays robots and fire so what's going on now now we're in a room where they're testing the effects of weightlessness on the human body and they managed to lower the gravity in the room by i don't know something involving a magnetic field but whatever now we're gonna sit here for a while and watch these two screw around for a really long time still no signs of any robots yet so they get them into this thing to see how they handle the g-force and oh my god look the computer is going screwy again the thing just keeps getting faster and faster too bad there's not a kill switch to use in the event of this exact situation imagine building this thing and being like okay so we strap people into it and it spins around really really fast no time to think of a way to quickly cut off all power in case of some kind of malfunction we're in a space race god damn it we gotta get there first there's no time to think about safety safety is for losers i mean well what are you what are you one of those people that wears one of those what do they call those now that they're putting into cars safety belts okay now they just gotta rip everything apart but it's too late they're dead so what's going on in this room now a bunch of tuning forks and imagine working in a room that sounds like this that's right electronically controlled tuning forks yeah so i guess there wasn't a better way to do this without you know subjecting yourself to the possibility of blowing out your eardrums every day and holy crap look it's so loud in there now that the frequency generates such great heat that the chair is smoking open your mouth they had the idea of putting the tuning parts in a soundproof booth and then monitoring the frequency from outside but i said no we gotta actually hear the sound it's loud though so they think there's something flying overhead but they can't see anything on the radar how high does your radar probe a hundred thousand feet but no planes ever gone that high at least from our planet holy crap you know where this is going some kind of alien this is gonna be awesome robots fire sun rays and aliens i can't wait for the climax of this story so now they go into this room with the novak computer the brain computer which controls everything in the base and was made in switzerland and designed by this guy dr zeitman [Applause] i've always been curious about stuff like this like this guy flips the switch and then starts looking at this light bright panel what does all this mean i mean i know it looks cool and techy to have these you know all these little bulbs going off but nothing's labeled so does he have this all memorized as to what every bulb means anyways the computer also controls gog and magog two robots with massive boners anyways zeitman is like check this out so they take out some tape and punch some buttons and the computer writes something on it and gog rolls over turns the wheel and flicks a switch wow the automation is just mind blowing think about how much time that's gonna save instead of someone walking over there turning the wheel and flicking the switch now all they have to do is go to the desk take out the tape feed it through the machine punch in a bunch of ones and zeros wait for the machine to print it out and write the report and bingo bango the robot does it instead and the possibilities are endless i mean look at this instead of walking over and picking up the screwdriver they can program the robot to get the screwdriver and bring it to you the future is now people soon you won't have to lift a finger at all it will all be done by robots probably around the year let's be generous uh 1987. okay 1989 just to be safe anyways dr shepherd is like hey you're just throwing the tape on the floor when you're done with it and these pieces of tape have all the code on them this is a massive security risk you're supposed to be burning these things when you're done and zeitman's like dude i don't have time to be secure i'm working with computers here now from this point on photoelectric cells sound a warning if unauthorized you mean to say they're watching us man that's weird it seems like you have constant surveillance on the lowest level of the base why not have that on all levels wouldn't that just make sense this is all top secret i mean you had to build it underground if you had done that you could just check the camera footage to see who was planting all those radar beacons but well i guess not so they go down to the reactor and oh it looks like there's a spike in radiation on the second level so they run up there and find mona on the ground the geiger counter is going crazy and it looks like her badge has turned red which means she was exposed to a high dose of radiation after she's taken out of the room these two have no problem staying in the room where there was a huge spike in radiation that someone just died from they find that the plant is actually giving off the radiation so they put some glass over it there that should do it so they find a radioactive isotope and again aren't any of you concerned about just hanging around in here i mean this guy is covered head to toe doesn't that at least raise the question hey maybe we should be wearing protection too so it turns out someone put that isotope in there to kill mona because she was analyzing some dust from one of the transmitters and now the dust sample is gone but who could it be so they all get together to discuss everything and dr shepard tells everyone to continue working in pairs report anything suspicious and if anything goes wrong just grab onto his chest hairs for safety meanwhile oh my god the sun mirror is operating all by itself it's got a mind of its own a murderous mind and i have to say this would be pretty scary if i was in this situation i would assume that it was some kind of you know poetic justice for all the times i used to burn ants with a magnifying glass when i was a kid you know some kind of karma and oh crap the frequency is back the tuning forks are going nuts honestly did no one think this through at all there's no ear protection of any kind in this room whatsoever so howard tries cutting the power but it's no use he's smoking now it's all over anyways they're certain that since everything is run through novak that whoever is controlling novak is doing the killing okay here we go finally it's gog time also magog is missing i guess 600 pounds of metal just left the room without this guy noticing or anyone else in the base for that matter and oh my god watch out gog is getting its orders from an outside source we gotta shut this thing down [Applause] [Applause] dr zeitman says you got to destroy the tubes on its head and dr shepard decides to use his gun which i can only assume he's never used before because instead of you know actually aiming the firearm he just hip fires at this thing which is always a great way to miss and hit the innocent people who are right next to the target so god kills zeitman because dr shepard ran out of ammo because he sucks and then he grabs a flamethrower because even he can't miss with that thing they get to the atomic pile because magog is going to destroy the whole base by pulling out the safety rod which seems like an insanely easy way to start a nuclear disaster but then again what do i know so shepard puts the safety rod back in and wow look at this this is clearly going well but eventually i guess the heat gets to the robot and it explodes but here comes gog and honestly what the hell is wrong with this guy you know you're supposed to destroy the tubes on its head why don't you swing at those eventually the air force gets the spy plane in the sky that's causing this whole thing and blows it up and that's the end really except that the two of them have been exposed to a lot of radiation [Music] hello david that's a fine time to be waking up what happened you'll be all right the doctor says it isn't serious just a little too much radiation actually it's really serious uh severe radiation poisoning it's not good hello oh yeah why listen to the doctor what does he know how do you feel now radiant that's probably the morphine we give you that's gonna wear off unlike the radiation poisoning so i guess the explanation is that when the novak machine was built in switzerland enemy agents installed a transmitter into it and then just flew a fiberglass plane over top of the base and sent out instructions which honestly really makes no sense to me i mean how could they have known the moment that this guy walked into the freezing chamber so that they could send down the order to lock it and freeze him i mean i could go on and on about this but the fact is i just found this ending to be extremely disappointing and now they're just like well it will never happen again and now we're sending up a miniature space station because everything is cool now the end now this movie came out in 1954 and was part of the office of scientific investigation trilogy and it was actually shot in 3d which you know looking back at some of the shots you can kind of tell that's what they were going for again i was expecting a lot more from the climax in this movie it wasn't exactly the robot battle i was hoping for and also i felt the ending just fell really flat but on that note that's pretty much it for this one as usual thanks for watching guys and i'll see you all next time so they take the monkey away and dr kirby goes into the self supply room okay mark when you're writing how about you make sense okay you know i'm here here i'm gonna read this listen to this anyways it seems like a completely success so they take the monkey away and dr kirby goes into the supply room leaving dr hubert leaving dr hubertus is the freezing chamber alone in the freezing chamber anyways david gets dressed in his underground base outfit and it looks and it turns looks what [Music] so [Music] you
