maturity and I'm thrilled to share that heart with you today through the life transforming power of the Word of God I also want to invite you to get a daily encouragement by signing in for my free devotional at Ralph Douglas West dot org now let's hear today's message be encouraged open the Word of God this morning to First Samuel chapter 22 beginning at verse 1 in concluding the day at verse 23 I want to tag this text living under God's protection God's protection from treachery allow me to read just a few lines from the story this morning beginning at verse 1 David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Abdullah when his brothers and his father's household heard about it they went down to him there and all those who were in distress or in debt are discontented gathered around him and he became their commander about four hundred men were with him from there David went to miss pie and Moab and said to the king of Moab would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learned what God will do for me so he left them with the king of Moab and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold but the Prophet gad said to david do not stay in the stronghold go into the land of Judah so David left and went to the forest of Harris but one son of ahem elect first twenty son of a high two named avi avec scaped and flair to John joined David he told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord then David said that the author that day when due egg the Edomite was there knew he would be sure to tell Saul I am responsible for the death of your whole family stay with me don't be afraid the man who wants to kill us try to kill me too you will be safe with me this is the Word of God you may be seated God's protection from treachery now something beautiful or fascinating about caves some caves are used for shelter and others for burial sometimes scientists use caves to check the climate of past weather beautiful caves and there are deep caves and their mystical caves a search of the top caves in the world would provide in-depth insight to the mystery behind these particular case but on the top 10 list of one cave that didn't make it was Abdullah and yet in that cage housed the predictive King the late Messer David who would be making preparation for the greater David Jesus Christ to come the scene picks up after David has pretended to be mad in the previous chapter and now he like a fugitive is on the run he makes his way from one place to the next he leaves gasps and now he comes to Abdullah a cave place and what a strange place for predicted to King Kings belong in palaces in beautiful places tell that to God though he has a unique way of putting greatness in bizarre places if you think a dull amiss strange for David how about a stall with no room in the end for his own son in a dollar the in justices of the world magnetized himself to this particular place look at the description of people that gather in the cave with David if your imagination goes fancy when you read it then you are not reading it wrong in fact the words play upon contemporary images the distressed come to him those that are in dead they didn't pay visa mastercharge or Americans Express dead the discontented those that are disheveled by life and some that are weary about life they came around him and interestingly they make him the commander and then day by day different groups of people from the tribes of Israel make their way to this out of bound place to where David is in a dull 'im a cave and I asked 400 men then 600 at the 400 those of you that remember the Sunday School lessons will remember these will become David's fighting men he's on the run gaff toward Ullom and now David mother and father has arrived his brothers and sisters have come and he doesn't want them to stay in the cave alone and so he wants to put them on the protective cuff to custody because his family become one of the families on Sol's hit list he wants to get them out of the reach of his insecurities and his brazen outright mean behavior if anybody knows about the black moods of King Saul that's young David and so he goes to miss pas of Moab he likes Moab Moab is where his grandmother Ruth is from and he holds an indebtedness to Moab because of his grandmother it was passed down to him David your grandmother made this statement once - Naomi where you go I will go and where you live I will live your people will be my people and your God shall be my god king of Moab now provides canopy of protection for the family of David and this is a good place to be but he moves from man he goes to the wilderness now and he's out in the wilderness place with his four hundred men and they're camped out and they're keeping surveillance to make sure that their little protective areas not over run by aggressors from Saul's camp and then not everybody was destitute and distressed or military or political who had come to the cave of Adam and now on the run from Mizpah but even prophets came in fact GAD who would write in fact a chronicle of David's life later to give us in-depth insight of what was taking place in the cave and around it and beyond it he said simply to him David you can't stay out here in the wilderness forest you need to move on somewhere else and so they move further in and they go further out and they are in the wilderness not in the cave but in the wilderness and in the forest and that's the story and then you never know who's gonna come to your door in verse 20 one more fellow joined the company of David's committed his name is Abbie otha he's the son of a Himalaya you met this high priest who ranks on the second in position to the king in the previous chapters and when he opened his mouth the four hundred fighting men who had seen almost everything ears pricked but their faces reflected disbelief will now be offered begin to tell why he was at the cave and his narrow escape it's a silence a holy hush fell upon that forest empowering to say saw this stoop to an all-time low here's the report I barely got out alive the king was in more than a black mood beginning at verse six he started rambling about things that nobody knew what he was talking about there was sitting beneath the tamarisk tree with the spear in his hand and conducting political counsel with everybody that was around and then he started making accusations about people siding against him favoring you you're his son being more friendly to you than to him and nobody would tell him that his son was working a plot and is back and and and you had made promises to everybody you were going to give them farther acres and a mule and in I mean give them title and position and rank and file and nobody said anything because nobody knew what he was talking about I declare the more I listened to saw the more narcissistic and nepotistic he becomes an insecure and that's a dangerous kind of leader when they're self-absorbed and turned in on themselves they'll do just about anything then there was a fellow there when nobody else with not in agreement with him there was a guy there named doing the Edomite you know if you take one alphabet out you could just call him dog you probably remember him better just say dog and and he appeared to be so opportunistic that everything the king said he nodded in agreement even when he knew it was bad policy and and then this fellow Doeg joins in he says I know you telling the truth because I was there with her Himalaya gave David food and when David Ickes for weaponry so don't have any better got the sword of Goliath he gave him bread and the sword now Doh egg is telling the truth he's just not telling all the truth I asked for verification friends and lawyers do y'all still do that you know do they still do that when you swap peepin do you swear to tell the truth and then they say whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you God because they know you can tell the truth but with holes some of the best effort tips that keep it from being the whole truth and nothing but the truth your opinion don't matter and Doig told his side of the story and by this time and it doesn't take much for a narcistic nepotistic insecure leader to fly off the handle and the next thing you know there is an invitation to a group of priests from the Talon table to come and they thought that they were coming to do priestly responsibilities and ritual and ceremony and when they arrived the King asked questions interrogating them when they didn't answer the way he wanted he told his soldiers killer but but none of these men moved nobody they wouldn't move they did not move they stayed there hand we don't know what they were thinking but I guess they were saying is he you want me to kill the priest the person is offering the ceremony from God you want me to kill God's anointed and appointed whatever you think of them they belong to God and putting my hand on that but you never have to worry about it because whatever unholy disobedience won't do you can always find somebody to do it doing the dog said I'll do it and he did it 85 priests dead that's how I got the dog that's how I moved past Mizpah through Moab and got word that y'all been hanging out in the forest that's why I'm here and David just says them listen the same insecure leader that's after you is after me I'm the cause of what has happened to you but you're safe with me that's the story that's the story but I have one or two lessons that we can draw from the story and I want to just give them to you quickly down the list one lesson we can learn is that God can give you unusual allies unexpected friends that can come to your rescue them if it has never happened to you keep living that you will find yourself in a cave closed and locked up with no support and the support that God sends to you is probably not the support that you solicited but if God sends it except it is what you need for that moment who could have ever made David believe that the dispossessed and the distressed and the discontent would be the very people that he needed but in that moment that's exactly what he needed in the cave he needed people that knew how to adjust indicate but also to give celebration while that they were there elevate him to command a follow his lead and know that he would lead them to the right place how many of us can honestly say that God has said to us at the right time in an unusual place the right unexpected allies to help us in a time of need it happened in the 1930s just south or east of us in Baton Rouge Louisiana Gardner Calvin Taylor was a student at Leland college driving the president around and in the Jim Crow South had an accident on the back roads of Louisiana and he knew that his fate had been sealed he had been accepted at the University of Michigan for law he didn't want to be in ministry he was a Christian his dad was the abled pastor of the Mount Zion First Baptist Church in Baton Rouge and he didn't want to be a preacher though he had nothing against a preachy loved his dad's preaching but that's not the cost that he wanted to take and there he is on his way to Michigan to study law accident' and the next thing you know if it's in the Jim Crow and he's african-american and accident' and he kills a white motorist his satus field he already knows the fate is sealed in the court the Mose unlikely unexpected Ally shows up to white farmers that saw the accident from the field came in and said we saw it he didn't do it he's innocent it was an accident Taylor said he knew that day Lord wedding his future preaching was God was send to you unlikely allies don't you worry when you need them at least expect them God has a way of letting the most unlikely now they may not dress like you want them to dress look like you want them to look they may not have a beautiful resume but they will be who God wants you to have at the right moment in your life inside of that cave we learn another lesson that that is if you take care of those in the case those in the cave will take care of you that's God's protection you see when we read the story of David unfortunately we have such a twisted spiritual mentality that the only thing that we run to is David and Bathsheba that's all we know off Psalm 23 one of the things that is beautiful in the life of David read it every person that David cared for are cared for him David and turn cared for them until the end even King Saul who has a bounty on his head and I hit out on him from the very beginning when Saul would meet his death and a young news reporter would come casting the news in second Samuel one all David water was the facts and when the reporter gave him the facts of his participation in helping to accelerate the death of the king so it wouldn't be in pain if a gasps Dave it to the point and this is why we quote those words you touched God's anointed touch not God's anointed do God's prophet no harm and David said if you touch God's anointed that I'm gonna touch you who ever cared for David he cared for them all the way to the end even when he cared for those that were against him the four hundred men in a dalam in the cave and now in the forest will watch after David and David for the rest of their life and family like he'll watch after their David watches after his mother and father who watched over him and from his birth to present and now he'll watch over them to the end even his brothers that dismissed him and too raided him about describing him has been unfit to go to battle he now takes care of his brothers and his sisters and his family because who ever cared for David David care for them preach pastor where's he cared for them and thank God for the people that the Lord puts around us that care for us help me holy goes thank God for the people I'm talking to you I can't shout for you cuz I don't know who God put in your life but if you know God put somebody in your life this is a lot of time to sit there act like you got where you are by yourself you are the thinking for the people who have cared for you cared for you and you know the people I like to care for you all the people that literally look beyond your faults and care for it I used to have members say to me past as long as you write on which I said leave now cuz you ain't paid no price talk about as long as you write I'll need some people that when I'm wrong now now you can't rejoice over that because unfortunately y'all have these warped images of leaders nobody gets to a certain level in life whose hand and got something on it okay who you are you don't get through life and you get that clean you just thank God that is grace is enough to wash and wipe and make you run that's all thank God for them and then I just answered also why many of you will never make a good leader you see poor leaders have negative bits they're always looking at the worst great leaders always look at the bits they see what ears but they also see what you can become that's what David did in the cave he knew they were distressed and destitute he knew that they were all on the margin but he also knew they got the commitment and the compassion the heart to be a great leader and that's what God looks for in you acts God negative side of life but start looking on the positive side some of y'all would be happier if you can say good morning and wasn't always trying to qualify well what's so good about IT was good about it the Lord woke you up that's enough to be faithful that's a good morning you get the idea let me give you another lesson though let me give you another lesson don't put your trust in smiling treachery David will have to learn this lesson because one of the weaknesses of David is that David trusted too much when you forget who God really is Prak and feel like a burden or waste of time but all that changes when you remember that God is your loving father who cares about you deeply I want to help you rediscover the joy of talking to your heavenly father by sending you my series what is prayer as a thanks for your gift today my hope is that this two-part series helps you reconnect with the loving God who sees you as his beloved child so request your copy of what is prayer when you call a go online to give so you're greatly appreciated be encouraged [Music] [Music] you
