Coming up, we explore a charming village deep  in the North Yorkshire Moors. If you remember   Green Grass and PC Rowan then it will be very  familiar. We'll also see the delightful old   station part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway  famous as Hogsmeade in the Harry Potter series. So our drive across the North Yorkshire moors  brings us to Goathland, you probably know this as   Aidensfield from the hit series on ITV, Heartbeat  back in the 90s and early 2000s. So we're here   to have a little look around and see some of  the sites and memories from that TV programme. Goathland is 40 miles north of York and nine  miles west of the seaside town of Whitby.   There is a car park in the centre of this  tiny village but it has a rather high £3.50   charge to park for two hours! There is a bus  service and for example, you can travel from   Whitby in 25 minutes, so it is one of the more  accessible Villages if you don't have a car. The black-faced sheep is a hardy breed,  bred to tolerate the cold, wind and rain,   so perfect for the Yorkshire Moors. They are  free to walk around the village and get up   to mischief. Much of the land is owned  by the Duchy of Lancaster and tenants   have a right extending back many hundreds of  years to graze their sheep on common land. We have come early which is why it  looks deserted as you know we try   and make sure you see the scenery  and not people blocking the views.   It's a popular place so expect it  to be a hive of activity later. Heartbeat ran from 1992 to 2010, set in the 1960s  based upon the Constable series of novels written   by Nicholas Rhea. There were 18 series and 372  episodes, it became a staple for Friday night   television in the UK drawing in millions to listen  to the 60s backing tracks, the comedic antics of   Greengrass and of course some drama thrown  in as well. Many of the scenes were filmed   here in front of the village shops with the  Aidensfield store being the most photographed.   This lovely Austin A40 outside was  actually used in a few of the series. If you look through the windows  there are interesting photos and   a number of props from filming  that have been saved to display. Along this small stretch of shops  are a few tea rooms, souvenir shops,   a post office and a general store for the locals. As we make our way to the Goathland station we  come across more filming locations from Heartbeat. This will be well known as  Scripps garage and funeral   services and was seen more often in  stories from Series 5 when Bernie,   David and Greengrass would get up to no  good with the latest money-making schemes. Across the road is the Goathland  Hotel used as the Aidensfield Arms.   If you are able to go inside then you'll notice it   looks very similar to the program as it  was used for the inside shots as well. The moors are loved by many for their walking  trails and there is a number around the village.   The Rail Trail is popular, running from  Goathland to Grosmont on the track that in   1836 was operated by horse-drawn carriages being  pulled up the beck hole to Goathland by a rope,   due to the very steep incline. When this  was deemed cumbersome and dangerous and   with the advent of steam-powered locomotives a  deviation line was created and the new Goathland   station opened here, allowing trains to  run from Whitby to Pickering from 1865. This is the Eller Beck that  runs beside the station a   Beck is basically a swift-flowing stream. The opening of the new station increased trade  with the fishing port of Whitby which we will   visit in our future episode. It also encouraged  tourism and Victorian and Edwardian tourists   flocked to the pretty village for holidays and  named it a spa village for the Mallyan Spout,   a waterfall nearby that can be reached by  a footpath from just outside the village. The station is just stunning and  recently known as Hogsmeade where   Harry Potter alights from London on his  way to Hogwarts School in the movie series.   After World War II the railways were  nationalised forming British Railways.   Steam services continued but by 1958 diesel  trains had started to take over along the line.   Following the infamous beaching report of  1963, this line like many others across the   country was destined for closure. The Whitby to  Pickering line closed on the 8th of March 1965. In 1967 some local enthusiasts started looking  at preserving the line and bringing back services   between Grosmont and Pickering forming the North  Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society. They succeeded in 1970 with a member's  service running on the 20th of March,   thanks to the support of many volunteers.   By 1973 there was a public service and  the railway became a viable concern. Since then it has gone from strength to strength,  becoming a non-for-profit charitable trust and one   of the most popular heritage lines in the country,  carrying some 350,000 passengers a year. Over a   hundred full-time staff, 50 seasonal staff and 550  volunteers keep things oiled and running smoothly.   Today the line is 18 miles long running its  full length again from Whitby to Pickering.   You can spend a wonderful hour and a half  chugging along the line in some of the most   stunning scenery within the North Yorkshire  Moors. To look at the timetables and prices,   check out their website. Services run from April  to October each year (at the time of filming). As luck would have it the Pickering to Whitby  early morning train is just about to arrive. The locomotive pulling this service is number  80136 and was built in Brighton in 1956,   working on the London Tilbury and South  End line hauling commuters out of London.   It was sold for scrap in 1965 and remained  there until 1979 when it was bought by the   Churnit Valley Railway and restored to  steam. Following a number of rebuilds,   it finds itself running on the  Yorkshire Moors. Lovely to see it saved! Let's steam ahead to next week's  episode and see what's in store. This time we're back in the charming  village of Haworth for one last time,   to take a walk around the cobbled streets,   see some of the delightful shops and sights  and of course, explore more of its history. Well, that's it from Goathland, do subscribe  if you liked our content and join us again next   week for more from our Yorkshire series.  Thanks for watching the MemorySeekers.
