so here here's the thing like i'm not speaking tonight which i love teaching and preaching from the word of god but we have people that are engaged in this ministry from this church who love and have a passion for god's word as well so tonight elisha ita is going to be speaking uh and she's going to continue in the series uh killjoy that we've been going through over the past month uh and what i want to do is i want to invite not only her but i want to invite her husband eddie up and they're gonna kind of set the tone for tonight uh to uh just open us up in prayer and i thought it'd just be really cool for this to happen so uh thank you alicia for uh being studious and uh helping us lean into god's word tonight and eddie thanks for opening our night in prayer of course but i have to say one thing first if you're going to take ten dollars and go to white castle and you go to talk about get two five dollar boxes and you're set for a couple days right thank you okay here's the thing uh it's been it's been a while since i've been in college and it's been a while since i've been in my young 20s so uh with that we're leaving tonight we're gonna talk about gluttony so that's that's a great thing but hey i guess i need to up my game when it comes to fast food uh we'll have a meeting show me your ways all right now that i'm thoroughly embarrassed you're the editors thanks jimmy all right guys we're gonna open up a prayer god thank you so much for the gathering of your people god thank you so much for allowing us to serve you god thank you for the safe environment that you give us to to to love on you and to listen to your word here in this church god we pray for everybody here that through alicia you speak your word god we pray for our open hearts we pray to accept your word today god and from this grow god we don't want to be a church of just people who call each other christians god but we want to be christ followers and with that we need you god we need that relationship and god i pray that each and every person in this sea gets that from you tonight god god please make yourself known in this room god and and all right let's pray oh that's right let's pray that this stays because i don't want to go okay anyway hi guys alicia here you guys jimmy introduced me so i'll skip that part but hi so i just want to kind of give you guys an introduction of why i'm speaking on gleny so jimmy sent me a list of what we call the seven deadly sins and if i'm honest i looked at it and i was like oh my gosh these look like hard topics so i took forever to decide what i wanted to talk about and i wanted to talk about greed but then that was already taken because it took forever to decide so i looked at the list and there were like three or four left and i was like hmm what am i going to talk about and then i remembered if i'm honest god has been dealing with me a lot of my portion control so i felt convicted with that but i didn't know much about what the bible had to say when it came to the topic of glenny so i was like really struggling with my portion control and i had nothing to fight it with there are no knowledge to back up the conviction so i was like what a perfect opportunity to talk about gluttony so through my research and my studying and my praying this is what i found but before we jump into that i wanted to actually look at matthew 7 3-5 i wanted to lay this foundation and you guys will see why but it says why do you see the spec that is in your brother's eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye or how can you say to your brother let me take the speck out of your eye when there is a log in your own eye you hypocrite i love it because jesus always brings it you hypocrite first take the log out of your own eye and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye and i wanted to read to you guys what my study bible says i hate when we just read or like heard scriptures a million times but we don't really know what it means so i wanted to read you guys this note so it's saying that jesus in this scripture may have drawn on his carpentry background and the section where it says log in your own eye that is a hyperbole it's an intentional overstatement but what i really wanted to focus on is the section that says then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye so this is what it means it says jesus does not forbid all evaluation or even judgment of others for ultimately the one who feels grieved and humbled over his own sin can help remove the spec from others what jesus does rule out is pride that views oneself as better than others so i wanted to lay the foundation with this because i think it can be so easy to judge from outer appearance we can say like oh that person's a glutton just from outer appearance but we have to take in into consideration that we have different body types metabolisms different genetic makeups and our age and gender plays a factor and then some women that are older after they've had babies their body changes and also surgery if you're injured so i just want us to be careful when we talk about that so now let's get into what the bible actually has to say about gluttony and when i was doing my research there was a lot in here like it's filled so i was like oh my goodness how am i going to talk about all of this which is the time that i have so i figured to use first corinthians 6 19 through 20. and here's what it says it says for do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy spirit within you whom you have from god you are not your own for you were bought with the price so glorify god in your body so if we grow up in church we've seen this verse a million times but this time i saw it a little bit differently i saw the word temple and i was like that's interesting why doesn't it say that your body houses the holy spirit or why doesn't it say that your body is a place where the holy spirit resides why does it use the word temple and as i was thinking about that it took me to the old testament because the old testament talks about the temple and to really understand the old testament i'm going to give us a or temple i guess i'm going to give us a little history lesson and i'm going gonna do the best that i can to try to make it make sense so to understand the temple we first have to understand what the tabernacle was so this tabernacle was a temporary place of worship that the israelites built according to god's specifications while they were wandering in the desert now this tabernacle was portable they could pick it up and move it with them and reset it up wherever they were going to be stopping so it's basically easy way to understand it a tent and in the tent there were two different rooms in the front there was a room and that was called the holy place and in the back there was a chamber called the holies of holies or the most holy place so as i said the first of the holy place back holy of holies and in the holy place we see that there are three articles of furniture i don't want us to look past this because this is important to understand so as you can see i'm going to go one by one the first one that one is called the golden lamp stand and you guys can see it's on my right hand side if i'm looking here this was to be kept burning at all times and it was supposed to give light to the holy place and this is significant because in the new testament jesus was the one who fulfilled this symbol so if you look at john 8 12 it says and again jesus spoke to them saying i am the light of the world whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of light so the second article of furniture was the table for the bread of presence and that is where bread was baked fresh every single day and only the priest could eat from it and again this is significant because jesus was the fulfillment of this in the new testament if you look at john 6 35 it says jesus said to them i am the bread of life whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst the last article of clothing is the altar of incense and that was special incense that was to be burned every morning and every evening as an offering to the lord so we can see that the holy place was set apart it was holy because it was a special representation and a reminder of the presence of god now in the back of the tabernacle the back chamber as you said that's the holies of holies and in there the ark of the covenant was held before we get into what the ark of the covenant was i wanted to explain what a covenant is so i'm actually going to give credit to my husband for this one we just talked about it the other day i asked him what's the best way to explain a covenant and he was like basically it's like a holy contract between us and god so there was a covenant given between god and the israelites and what was this covenant god promised good to them and their children four generations if they obeyed him and his loss but if they didn't there were warnings and consequences we don't have much time to get into all of that but i recommend you guys look into it because it's pretty intense now as a sign of this covenant god had them built built the ark of the covenant inside it held the ten commandments and on top of the ark of the covenant um there was a mercy seat and the mercy seat was seen as a place for god to dwell in the middle of his people and in the holy holies the back chamber in the most holy place i mean in the back chamber that was um that only could be entered by the high priest on the day of atonement the high priest was someone who was appointed by god who was set apart to go in there into the presence of god and take the blood of an animal and sprinkle it on the ark of the covenant so if anybody else went in there that wasn't the high priest they would actually die and if you guys want to know more about that come talk to me after and i'll give you some things you can look up that'll explain why it's pretty significant but anyway um just a little quick breakdown the first chamber was the holy place and that held the three articles of furniture that represented jesus and the back was the holiest of holies where people's sins were forgiven and once a year on the day of atonement um yeah the sins were forgiven on the day of atonement and that's where the presence of god was held so later the tabernacle was placed with the temple so remember how i said that the tabernacle was something that was portable they can move it with them wherever they went eventually it was replaced with solomon's temple and king david his dad was the one who made the blueprint and solomon was the one who built it so it's the same thing this was just a stationary one and inside it was the same as what was in the tabernacle so we can see that this place was different than any place on earth because it has the presence of god in the midst of the people so in the old testament what happened remember how he said there was a veil between the holy place and the most holy place that's significant because in three of the gospels it reports when jesus died on the cross that the veil was supernaturally miraculously torn into why is that significant because the torn curtains symbolize that the way to god was now open through the death of christ we no longer need to go through an earthly priest we have a high priest jesus christ who died for us and we no longer on the day of atonement have to sprinkle the blood of an animal on the ark of the covenant because we have jesus blood to forgive our sins so now us because that veil was torn we are in the temples and we house the presence of god so it's super significant if we really understood the implication of that what that meant we would never talk the same walk the same we want to act the same we would think completely different the responsibility that we have to house and hold the holy spirit is such an honor and it's a great responsibility now i wanted to look at another aspect to the word temple when i saw this i was kind of blown away so i want to look at matthew 21 12-13 i'm sure we've heard the story too this is jesus in the temple he says or the scripture says and jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons he said to them it is written my house shall be called the house of prayer but you make it a den of robbers so jesus entered the temple why and over or overturned those tables why because it was being used for something that it was never meant to be used for and it was super interesting too because if we look at the book of nehemiah something very similar happened if we look at nehemiah 13 8-9 it says this is nehemiah speaking and i was very angry and i threw all the household furniture of tobiah out of the chamber then i gave orders and they cleansed the chambers and i brought back there the vessels of the house of god with the grain offering and the frankincense so same thing with nehemiah the temple was being used for something that it was never meant to be used for and i want to touch on something real quick because we see jesus being angry and we see nehemiah being angry but there's a difference between righteous anger and anger righteous anger is something that would make god angry it would upset his heart for example and today let's give an example from today like sex trafficking that should make us angry but it leads us to do something great to put something back in order okay so um anyway it was used for something that was never meant to be used for and what i love is that they restored order to the temple and if we go back to solomon's temple in first chronicles 23 3 through 6 we see that it talks about how people were appointed in order to keep the temple in order um yeah so what does that have to do with gluttony we eat things we put things in our body that we were never meant to put in there we eat things that our body was never meant to digest and i was actually speaking with a friend of mine she does cancer research and i asked her i was like do you think there's a cure for cancer and we're not really going to get into the nitty gritty of that but this is what she said she goes we can speak medically and we can speak naturally but i'm going to focus on the naturally part naturally she was talking about if we cut out the processed food we eat if we cut out a lot of the sugar that we were never meant to ingest then yeah i think that a lot of cancer can be not present so that just spoke and it kind of shows really that we shouldn't we should take care of our bodies i wanted to look at ecclesiastes 2 24 through 25 it says there is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil this also i saw is from the hand of god for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment so god wants us to enjoy our food and i'm going to share something that jimmy shared a long time ago that stuck with me god gave us taste buds and he gave us taste buds because he wants us to enjoy our food just think about that for a minute he's a good god he wants us to enjoy things but the problem is when food begins to control us when we don't have a portion control when we can't refrain from certain foods which makes me think about daniel in the book of daniel we see that he was in the presence of king nebuchadnezzar and if you're in the presence of a king you're gonna have gourmet food but he fasted for three weeks fruits and vegetables and he actually came out stronger than the rest so how do we do this and it's going to be through the fruit or through the fruit of self-control which is found in galatians 5 22-23 but the fruit of the spirit is love joy peace patience kindness goodness faithfulness gentleness there it is self-control against such things there is no law how do we get the fruit of self-control well first we have to pray because it comes from god and secondly we have a part to play too just like our muscles and our physical bodies we have to train it if you're anything like me if you go to the gym you gotta start with like two pounds then work it to five and then ten so jessica gets it so um same thing with the spiritual you have to do the same thing a little bit little by little you have to train that muscle so for me on my portion control instead of putting whatever size plate you would have or putting seconds i would put a smaller plate and wait like 20 minutes in between and get full like that and drink water so just a little bit by little um all right now i wanted to look at one story in scripture too it comes from the book of john now if we remember jesus fed 5000 we can find that in the gospels now what happened after he fed the 5000 the book of john tells us that he actually went to the other side of the sea to capernaum and what happened was the people followed him because they wanted the physical bread so if we look at john 6 26 let's see what jesus says he says truly truly i say to you you are seeking me not because you saw signs but because you ate your fill of the loaves so we can see in this story that jesus tried to get their eyes off of the physical bread and onto the spiritual bread let's go ahead and continue in verses 32-35 it says jesus then said to them truly truly i say to you it was not moses who gave you the bread from heaven but my father gives you the true bread from heaven for the bread of god is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world they said to him sir give us this bread always jesus said to them i am the bread of life whoever comes to me shall not hunger and whoever believes in me shall never thirst i think it's very interesting that if we keep reading we see that the people grumbled and complained when i read that the people grumbled and complained it took me directly to the old testament with manna when god provided manna that was also a form of bread and then too when god provided that bread they continued to grumble and complain and because of their grumbling and complaining they were stuck in the same place they couldn't move forward into what god had for them so in this story jesus was trying to get their mind off of the physical bread but it wouldn't happen they couldn't get their mind off of the physical bread long enough to understand the spiritual implications that jesus was making in other words i want to say it like this too that they were more concerned with the condition of their stomachs more than the condition of their souls and that takes me to continue reading in john 6 47-51 i've been reading out of the esv version but i want to read out of the nlt version i like this version it says i tell you the truth anyone who believes has eternal life yes i am the bread of life this is jesus your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness but they all died anyone who eats the bread from heaven however will never die i am the living bread that came down from heaven anyone who eats this bread will live forever and this bread which i will offer so the world may live is my flesh have you noticed this whole time we've been talking that there are food and taste analogies that are given in scripture that is interesting now i want to read to you guys what i found online but first i want to read to you some scriptures that give food and taste analogies let's look at psalm 34 8 it says o taste and see that the lord is good blessed is the man who takes refuge in him how about first peter 2 2-3 it says like newborn infants long for this pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up into salvation if indeed you have tasted that the lord is good one of my favorites first corinthians 3 1-3 but i brothers could not address you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh as infants in christ i fed you with milk not solid food for you are not ready for it and even now you are not ready i want to read to you guys something that i found online it says the implication here is that if we give ourselves to being satisfied with spiritual bread then physical hunger will lose its supreme power a lot of gluttony is born out of boredom so we need to cultivate a range of appetites for great and good things things like good literature people's fellowship reading the bible i want to stop here you guys i want us to if you don't have a good study bible please come see me after and i will send you a link to the study bible i have i'm a huge advocate for study bibles i have not been to theology school but if i did i would imagine this would be a theology degree in one book so it's that good but it continues and it says discover what god has for you get busy with the things of god instead so that the things other than food can satisfy now this part is going to involve you guys so i just wanted to give some food for thought see what i did there um i just want to give some food for thought so we've been talking about god and food and what that says in scripture but have we talked about what satan and food where they are in scripture and where they're connected does anybody remember where food and satan is present together times jesus yes anywhere else garden of eden exactly so satan tempted eve in the garden of eden and he was like did god really tell you not to eat the fruit off of this tree and look at we're in the mess that we're in today and then also too matthew 4 3-4 says and the tempter came and said to him if you are the son of god command these tones to become loaves of bread but he answered it is written man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of god now i wanted to give us some practical tips because now we know what the bible says so what do we do with all of this i have more than one practical tip for us the first practical tip is going to come from the scripture found in first timothy 4 8 it says for while bodily training is of some value godliness is of value in every way as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come now i'm the first to say that i struggle with working out so i'm working on this and i'm talking to myself as i read this so it says actually not it says but i wanted to introduce you guys to this pastor his name is pastor cornelius lindsay and he's into fitness and he actually has a instagram page called warrior club world and i wanted to read to you guys a post that he posted that correlates with this scripture and this is his friend austin so this is what cornelius wrote austin questioned why i worked out so much over a year ago i explained that it's my faith that drives my consistency in the gym as well as everything else i do my faith is the foundation of my actions there are so many lessons that i've learned while working out such as discipline persistence precision patience pressure and the like in fact my physical disciplines have helped me rationalize my spiritual disciplines which works for my analytical mind in addition i'm aware that my physical disciplines aren't as important as my spiritual disciplines but that doesn't mean they aren't important and they don't correlate one with another we can see in the scripture they were present together finally it's difficult for me to refer to myself as a disciplined one if i'm not disciplined in my life i'm given one body in this life and i'm determined to keep it under subjection so it doesn't rule over me now my brother is a changed man let's read what austin wrote he said this is my brother you all want to know one of the most valuable things i learned from him he taught me that my physical fitness is a spiritual battle just as much as it is physical he showed me as a spiritual being how important it is to bring my flesh to submission on a daily basis this is important that way when not if but when it comes time to deny my flesh outside of the gym i'm equipped to fight the battle it blew my mind how something so practical changed the trajectory of my life forever i'm gonna stop there second practical tip is fasting fasting the bible has a lot a lot to say on fasting and it's actually one of my favorite topics when i began fasting honestly i grew into the spiritual level that i couldn't get to without it and i don't have time to get into what the bible has to say about fasting but i have a youtube channel it's called empty vessel and on it i did a video on fasting and if you guys just go there and type in benefits of christian fasting it'll come up all right third practical tip i could list a million and one scriptures about what the bible has to say about renewing our mind changing our mind learning how to think differently this is so so important and i don't have time to get into all of those scriptures but what i'm going to do is give us one example of what it looks like to start thinking differently and it's going to be through this quote it says self-control is not the ability to say no to a thousand voices it's the ability to say yes to one voice see that mind change that happens okay the last two practical test um steps i want to give us is we need to educate ourselves on health we have to educate ourselves on bmi how much we're supposed to eat the calorie intake we have if we're eating too much or too little we need to learn the food triangle and sometimes you guys it might just have to come down to retraining our taste buds okay and then something that i wanted to give you guys two things that i wanted to give you guys to go home with if you want to continue doing this study it's through the youversion app that can be found on your phone i'm sure many of us know what that is anyway it's called a biblical guide to weight loss and basically it's laura and garden and they look at food and weight loss through the lens of worship so the way we eat is worship to god so that you guys can take home if you want to continue doing this study and then i also put a slide with a bunch of scriptures that talk about gluttony and food and if you guys want you can take a picture of it take it home study it on your own time but i wanted to give you guys some resources to take home and that's all that i have so i wanted to close up with some prayer and i actually wanted to pray a prayer found in 3rd john 1 2. i wanted to pray that oprah says dear friend i pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you even as your soul is getting along well god i want to thank you that our physicality and our spirituality play hand in hand and we see that here with food god i pray that you would convict us god and that our eating habits would be of worship to you god i pray that we would begin to if we're not eating enough to eat enough if we're eating too much god that you would convict us lord in your name i pray amen [Applause] so when alicia uh addressed me and she was like i wanna do the gluttony talk i'm like thank you you can have it but uh no seriously i love uh just truth behind that and uh if you guys think about it like how good is god that he actually cares about our health like god doesn't want us just to just live and just kind of die at a right young age or he doesn't want us just to lie around lazily or just be feeling awful all the time our god cares so much about us loves us deeply that he wants us to experience eternal life with him forever but also at the same time wants us to experience life and life to the full here and so i'm grateful that you would share that so boldly so bluntly and i appreciate that and i would even go as far to say don't just look up benefits for christian fasting go subscribe to empty vessel it's good stuff so highly recommend it but with that said uh it's a little early but we're gonna end uh this evening and so next week i hope you guys come back out next week we have an amazing evening planned for you we have an awesome band that's going to come in and lead us next week in worship and so i hope you guys can make it out and i hope to see you then if not uh don't feel free to well don't think you have to run out of this place feel free to hang out feel free to stick around for a little bit sound good excellent have a good [Music] night you
