Glass Greenhouse Build | Excavation W/ Lasers (Official Video Wranglerstar)

today we're going to be starting the excavating for the new flagstone staff on the greenhouse i thought you might enjoy this mrs w is going to come out and run a little grade rod for me [Music] did you know there's a proper starting sequence for these how do i know i actually spent the night i stayed up till about 2 30. i actually read the whole manual the technical manual for this i am that nerd i don't know i just got into it so caterpillar says that you turn the throttle to medium to the medium power setting of course turn it on let the plug start up and then once it starts and settles in then turn it down to idle i never knew that [Music] seems to work well enough the manual also said five minutes is sufficient time for warm-up and cool down today we'll be using the yanmar to pull the box trailer a little level grade on this we'll use a late grade laser man back in the day these things were very very expensive you took them in at night and you got threatened by your employer you know don't anything happen to this i think they even had to lease the things from the company i've got i'll probably i've got one of the last operating spectrophysics el1 look at this old timer take a look at this thing it's got to be from the what mid 80s i have babied it and i just i remember what i had to buy it i just remember how much sacrifice it was it it was it was blood money for me at the time but i couldn't work without it and here it is getting older i noticed to spend a lot more time reflecting on my life what i did if you were to ask me how do i what would i associate myself with you know and that means for me that means what was my profession i think that's what's important for those of us of men when we meet each other we ask you know what what do you do and you define you're defined by that and if i were to ask myself you know in my old age if someone asked me what what am i what did i do i guess it would be i would say i was a heavy equipment operator and a wildland firefighter those are the two things when you meet old guys and they perk up about what they did in their past you know the first thing they tell you that's the thing that they that's how they see themselves that's the role that they how they perceive they contributed to society to quote our fellow brother in christ ave let's see if she she chooches yeah she's a skookum this is a grade rod this is the laser receiver this is the transmitter and what this does is line of sight picks up that horizontal plane that's set right what that does is it gives us a baseline fast beeps is high low beeps low solid tone is your right on so that that gives us that standard that benchmark that we need that reference to pull a flat grade you'll no doubt notice that my grade rod is in inches not in metric so you can't pull a level grade with a metric grade rod it just isn't possible that's why all european buildings are all crooked and they leak and they smell like sewage east coast guy is rejoicing right now the european guy is taking some of the heat off of him we need to figure out what our average thickness is so what is our high our thickest slab in our thinnest so we have three inches right there and it looks like to the thinnest is going to be one inch so let's say we've got a variant of of uh between it's going to be between one and three and all of these are basically going to fit inside of that now that we know where we want to be i've been doing this for a while pretty good guess now that's tone at the top of the slab we want to be five below that right so we look at our numbers right here so we're at three and a quarter so we'll just move that up four and a quarter five and a quarter six and a quarter seven and a quarter eight and a quarter and as always it falls right on the joint so i have to reset my grade rod i never learned that did i goodness if i had a dollar for every time this happened to me you should start getting ready okay uh just like a sweatshirt and a skirt yeah something cute when i originally backfilled this we weren't planning on doing flagstone here that's why i brought the soil in so we're gonna we've got a few inches of topsoil on top of the sod i put it rolled right on there so i'm not gonna be able to use a lot of this i'll if i can separate it i will but most likely we just haul it off with a big sod pile and just bring in fresh masonry sand welcome mrs w to the to the program of the show i have i have a feeling when you said i just need you for one second that might not be true i have everything in place so you won't have to be here too long but we need to determine how big you want this thing to be we know we know it's going to stop at the edge of the greenhouse but how far would you like to come out here are we talking about the flagshow the the flags don't oh okay you didn't preface anything i literally just walked out so i didn't know what you were working on i don't think it should be very big i think it should be smaller rather than bigger okay because we need a lot of growth in here so should we just grab two why don't we make it why don't we make it a little bit bigger so we have the option that we could do some freestanding garden boxes here if you wanted to grow there if you didn't want it you could take them away and you'd have a big patio but you could still grow on it i'm not talking crazy but you know just maybe to right here that's quite large well we have a lot of flagstone you don't know my plans baby where does this come out to let let's see how many feet that is just out of curiosity um that is ten ten feet uh nine yeah ten feet yeah just under ten feet why don't you put it at ten feet and just lock it and let's take a look at it just come right off the corner oh there we go that's on the corner right there yeah just sit it down right there okay now that's that's bigger than i want okay let's try eight feet you'd want to have enough room where if you had a two chairs here and maybe a small table coffee table you could walk past it that gives everyone a lot of room yeah yeah and how nice would it be if you had a you did like a corner box here and then you inside you did like a corner a seat so you did we could build like 12 inch or 24 inch box all the way across here with a seat along there you're selling me on it it sounds good doesn't it and then you'd feel kind of closed in you could even plant like those little square boxwood hedges flat on the top that'd be cute i think i'm gonna put a hedge all along the outside okay so so so well brothers excuse me and miss beth i think that's probably it for today i'll go i'm going to rent a plate compactor and go pick up uh try i'll see if i can pack two or three yards of sand in the dump trailer with the truck and bring up here and then we'll do a lift of two inches of compacted sand and that will help us to place them and kind of compensate for the unevenness of the stones so that will be
