hello and welcome back to another tutorial my name is mike davies and in this video i'll be showing you how to design a hexagon or honeycomb logo using i'll be using version 2.10.22 which is the latest version of at the time of this tutorial before i get into that don't forget to check out my website at daviesmediadesign.com as always i have tons of and inkscape tutorials on here you can get more by becoming a dmd premium member and i have tons of free software help articles so definitely check that out you can enroll in my 2.10 masterclass from beginner to pro photo editing on udemy you can enroll in any of my skillshare classes by visiting gimpschool.com and as i mentioned you can get more by becoming a dmd premium member and i'll include a link to this as well as all the relevant links from this tutorial in the description of the video so i'll be using this free font from jeremy vesti is called bourbon grotesque i'm not really sure why it's called grotesque but this is a totally free font to download i do have an entire tutorial dedicated to how to download and install fonts for so definitely check that out but here is the final logo we're going to be designing so as you can see here there are some hexagon elements and then we also have some text here that includes some gradient shading so let's dive in here by creating our new composition and i'm going to start by creating a composition for creating the hexagon elements or the honeycomb elements so i'll do that by going to file new and i'm gonna go with 1080 by 1080 our final logo composition will be 1920x1080 but i'll start with these dimensions here for the honeycomb so i'll click ok it doesn't really matter what color background you use to start off with let me use this icon here to reset my colors to black and white and click and drag the white onto our composition so there we have a white composition and what i'll do to draw my hexagon is start by going to filters distorts mosaic and i'm going to make sure my tile geometry is set to hexagons the tile size i'm going to increase by middle clicking on the tile size or clicking using the mouse wheel and i'm going to type 540 there and for the tile height i'm going to turn this all the way down to one just by clicking and dragging that the tile neatness i'll turn all the way up to one and then tile variation doesn't matter you can just keep that set to the default and i'm going to keep the tile spacing where it's at this is going to take a while to render that's why i'm using a slightly smaller composition but by going with a tile size of 540 because our composition is 1080 by 1080 you know you're going to get two different hexagons here per row because each hexagon is 540 so 540 plus 540 is 1080 so we'll get two nice and even hexagons and i'll click okay the process of rendering the hexagons using the mosaic tool may take a couple of minutes for your computer depending on how fast or slow your computer is for me it took about 15 seconds to render but here is the result of that rendering next we need to create guides so we can draw along the edges here of the hexagon don't worry this process will be pretty easy i'll hit ctrl a to start or go to select all that's going to select our entire composition here then i'm going to go to image guides and then new guides from selection so that'll create guides along the border of our composition there and then i'll hit ctrl shift a to deselect that next i'm going to place guides at each point here and because we know that the hexagon is 540 in terms of its overall measurement we know that this line here is going to be at 540 and then this line up here is at the halfway point so that's going to be at 270. so we can basically just add guides at increments of 270. so go to image guides new guide and i'm going to start this at 270 click ok so as you can see here our first guide is going to be added along those points there so let's do that again image guides new guide this time we can go 540 and by the way make sure your direction is set to horizontal and i'll click ok so there you can see we have that i will place another guide right here because we are going to create another hexagon right here and it's just going to make things easier so i'll go to image guides new guide and this time we're going to add 270 to this again which is going to give us 810 and click ok so there we have a third guide so our last guides need to be placed at any point where there isn't a guide so that's going to be right here and right here which will automatically add guides here and here as well so for this part all i'll do is hold ctrl and zoom in using my mouse wheel and then i'm just going to click and drag from the rulers until it matches these pixels right here these last pixels on the left edge so hold ctrl zoom out and i'm just going to move over hold ctrl zoom in and we'll do the same but we're going to go along the right edge here so i'm just going to click and drag this to about right there and release and actually that's a bit too far i think so i'm going to grab my move tool and i'm just going to move this in one pixel so it's on this part right here and i might need to do that over here as well yeah let's just do that over here as well right there so we might need to tweak that later we will find out as we draw this but there are our guides so next i'm going to come over here and grab my paths tool the shortcut for that is going to be the b key so click on that hold ctrl zoom in a bit using my mouse wheel so i'm just going to roughly place the first two points here and then what i'll do is click and drag this first path until it clicks to my guides there so we're going to snap this to the intersection of the guides make sure you have snapping turned on by going to view snap to guides and we're going to click on this other point here the second point and we're going to snap it to that guide right there so then we can come over here and click loosely right there around the intersection of these guides and we're going to click and drag this point until it snaps there and we actually need a guide right here so hold ctrl zoom in and i'm just going to click and drag a guide until it snaps right there so now i'm going to click inside of here with my pass tool once again click and drag this over here and this little point by the way technically is called a node so we're going to drag the node until it snaps there hold ctrl zoom in click to create another point or another node and click and drag this and then we're going to move over to this left point here click and drag it until it snaps hold ctrl zoom out and finally we have our last point that we created which is actually our first point so hold ctrl and that's going to allow me to create a union between the last point we drew in the first one so holding the ctrl key will click on that point and that's going to connect our hexagon so there you can see the shape there you can hold ctrl and zoom in and analyze the lines and make sure they are correctly aligned to where you want them to be if not you may have to reposition your guides so that everything lines up the way you want it to in this case i'm pretty happy with that it's probably not totally perfect and we'll find out if this is acceptable in a second so what i want to do is use all three of these hexagons we created here for our logo and instead of sitting here and drawing all three by hand like we did with this first one what i can do is come over here to my paths tab so here is our first honeycomb shape all i have to do is come over here and click the duplicate icon now we have a second honeycomb shape so i'll come over and grab my move tool and you'll see here in the tool options we have three options for what we can move i'll choose the third option to move a path and let me come over here and unhide the path so now you'll see it's outlined in red and if i hover my mouse over it now i can click and drag this and i'm going to drag it until it snaps to the guides below and release and now let's duplicate this path here like we did the last one so i'll come over and click the duplicate icon again click and drag this until it snaps to our guides right here and release hold ctrl zoom in so it may not be totally perfect the way they all align but that's okay but now we have three honeycomb or hexagon shapes i can unhide the first shape we drew so there's all three once we've created the main honeycomb or hexagon elements now we need to bring those over into the actual logo composition so to do that first off i'll create a new composition so i'll go to file new and this time we're going to go with 1920 by 1080 as the dimensions and i'll click ok so we're still over here inside the paths tab so i'll come back here to the original composition and i'm going to right click on all three of these so we're just going to do one at a time and go to copy path if you're using 3.0 or newer which hasn't come out yet officially at the time of this tutorial but there is 2.99.2 you can shift-click on all three of these and right-click and go to copy path but for now we're gonna right-click on each one individually and go to copy path come over here to the pass tab right click paste path so there's the first one i can unhide that to see what that looks like and let's come over here back to the second one right click copy path come over here right click paste path and finally we'll come back here go to the third option right click copy path come back over here right click paste path so you still only see one here which is fine we just need to unhide the other two now what i want to do is i want to center this up and scale it down a bit so it fits better in our composition so what i'll do is go to image guides new guide by percent and we're going to set up a vertical guide at 50 percent click ok we'll do the same thing image guides new guide by percents but this time we'll go horizontal click ok that way we know the exact center of the composition so next what i want to do is i want to move and then scale all of the hexagons or the honeycomb shapes that we've created for this logo so for starters let's grab the move tool here and make sure that the transform mode for this tool is set to path and then we're going to come over here and we're going to click the transform link or transform lock icons for all three of these paths and now all i have to do is hover my mouse over one of these and just move it to the right and there you'll see all three will follow and i'll release you should see that little hair in the exact center of all three of these and that should snap to our guides so i'll release and if i wanted to scale these i can hit shift s on my keyboard and just make sure that your scale tool is set to transform path and then i'm just going to scale this down and i can keep an eye over here on the dimensions as i scale this so last time i went with somewhere around 175 or so actually maybe i'll go with around 250 for the width so about right there and come over and hit scale so all three of those will follow suit and i'll hit the m key again to grab my move tool and once again i can reposition these and let's just place those about right there for now so next let's move on to the text portion so the name of my fictitious company is going to be called honeycomb logic so we're going to add that text by coming back over here to the layers panel and i'll come over here and grab my text tool so over here inside of my fonts you can see i have bourbon grotesque selected again not sure why they named the font that but you can also come over here inside your tool options for your text tool and scroll through these until you get to bourbon grotesque and let me just come over here and change the line spacing to zero that's not really relevant for you guys it should already be set there but i'll come over here and click on my composition and with the caps lock key on i'll type honeycomb and you'll notice that my font size is set to 75 and you guys might need to hit ctrl a to select all your text and change this to 75 but while all my text is selected i'm going to increase the spacing between each character of text or the kerning to around 10. so there is our first set of text so now i'm going to type logic in a separate text box so i'm going to click over here and with the caps lock key still turned on i'll type logic ctrl a to select everything and once again i'm going to increase the spacing here to 10 so here is our text i'm going to click and drag a guide in here just so i can align everything with the text grab my move tool and let's change the mode of the move tool back to layer and that's going to allow us to move the text so we're just going to move the text until it snaps to this guide and also try to align the text so that there is a decent amount of spacing between this piece of text and this piece of text so let me just click on here once and then i can use the arrow keys on my keyboard to move this to the right or left and hold ctrl zoom out so once we have the text lined up here how we want it we can come over here and once again use the transform link on both of these text layers and then we can just move this over and let me hit ctrl z i need to unlink the honeycomb paths here so let's come back to the paths tab and what i can do is just click on each one of these and then come back to the layers tab and let's try this again so we still have the crosshair there in the middle which is going to allow us to snap that to that guide and that ensures our text is nice and centered on our composition all right so we have our main shape design for the logo and then we also have the text placed now it's time to add style to both of those elements so we're going to color the logo in so first let's just start off by organizing everything in here and i'll do that by coming over and clicking to create a new layer group and i'll turn my caps lock key off and double click on here and name this text elements hit the enter key and i'll just click and drag each one of these text layers inside the layer group and we can unlink these as well and now let's come back up here click on the text elements layer and come down and create a new layer group and i'm just going to click and drag this outside the text elements layer group double click on here and we'll name this honeycomb elements so now that we have that let's come over here and create a new layer and i'm going to name this honeycomb one fill it with transparency and click ok so before you start filling all of these in with the colors you want make sure this is positioned where you want it if not you can come back to the paths tab for example let's link these and if i hit shift r on my keyboard that'll grab the rotate tool and if i select this to path i can make sure that these are all rotated at an angle i want like so and then i can move it back into place i'm not going to do that i'm going to hit ctrl z that's just an example so let's unlink these again so you can see here we're on the top left honeycomb and what i want to do is fill this in with the color so i'll come over here while i'm on that first honeycomb path and right now it's just set to unnamed we can name this honeycomb one and come down here and click the path to selection icon so that i'll create a selection area there and then i'll come back to the layers tab and come over here to my foreground swatch and here we can choose from any of the colors so i'm going to go with this light blue color you can copy my html notation here and click ok and then just click and drag this into the honeycomb shape and there we have our first color so let's repeat that but for the second option which is going to be this one here so let's come over create a new layer name this honeycomb 2 hit the enter key come over to the paths tab and we're going to click on the layer below let's double click and rename this so honeycomb 2 hit the enter key come back here and click path to selection so that selects this honeycomb come back to layers and let's change the color i'm going to go with a slightly darker blue this time again you can copy my html notation and i'll click ok click and drag this here there's our second option and let's create a new layer for the third option so honeycomb 3 click ok come back to paths let's rename this honeycomb three hit enter finally hit the path to selection option and come over here and let's grab this dark blue color click ok and we'll click and drag that to fill it in all right so now i want to add strokes to all these shapes so let me hit ctrl shift a to deselect that let's come back to the layers panel create a new layer and we'll name this honeycomb stroke hit the enter key so we're going to stroke each one of these individually so that the stroke actually cuts through the honeycomb shape so let's come back over here to the path tab and we're going to do all these on the same layer so we'll start with honeycomb 3 and we'll come down here and click on the paint along the path option so you can see here the line width is set to 5 and if i click on line style i just went with the line option here make sure anti-aliasing is turned on and then also we're going to set this to a different color so let's just reset this to black doesn't matter what color this is right now we're gonna change it but now i'll come over here and click stroke and i'll hold ctrl and zoom in and you can see here that we're getting some sort of messed up thing going on so we're gonna have to reset this path here so that we get a nice smooth stroke so let me hit ctrl z to back up to before we stroke that the best way to do that is to convert this path to a selection and then we're going to come over here and go to selection to path so that's going to change that to a selection and we're just going to do that for the other two as well and the reason we're having an issue is because we scaled all the paths down sometimes when you scale your path down stroking it then presents some problems so you just have to kind of reset the paths so let's go to the second one here we're going to convert this to a selection and then we're going to click selection to path and then we'll come back to number one we're going to click path to selection and one last time selection a path so now we have three new paths ctrl shift a to deselect that come back here to this first option here and once again let's try that so we'll come down here and stroke this all of our settings should be the same from before and now when i hit stroke you'll see we get a nice cleaner stroke so let's come over here to the second one and we'll click to stroke that again and by the way underline style i also have the join style set to the bevel style copy my settings there if you want the same exact look but i'll hit stroke again and let's go to the third option here and we're going to paint along the path one more time click stroke and now we have some nice outlines going on let me hide all the paths there you can see the stroked honeycomb so let's come back over here to the layers panel and i want to change the color of this from black to a nice gradient so what i'll do is come over to the honeycomb stroke layer i'm going to lock the alpha channel and then i'm going to come over here and change the color to this yellow color and you can copy my html notation and i'll click ok and we're going to do the same for the background color we're going to go with this slightly different yellow color again copy that click ok if i hit the g key on my keyboard that'll grab my gradient tool i'm going to set the shape to linear and the color you can go foreground to background there's a variety of options i usually go with rgb or hsb so let's just go rgb for now and we're just going to click and drag this across our honeycomb stroke layer and because the alpha channel is locked it's only going to change the color of the stroke so if you're happy with that hit the enter key and there we have the honeycomb shape and it's nice and colored in next i'm going to work on the text here so let's start with the logic layer i'm going to come over here and create a new layer and i'm just going to name this logic gradient so what we're doing is filling the text in with a gradient so click ok and i'm going to alt click on this logic text layer you can also click on it and go to layer transparency alpha to selection and then we'll come back here to the logic gradient layer and just draw that same gradient with the same colors if you want to you can come over and reverse the colors so i prefer to have the dark colors on the bottom and the light colors on the top and of course you can reposition the gradient and hit the enter key and we're going to do the same for the honeycomb text so i'll come over here to that layer and we're going to click to create a new layer and this one will name honeycomb gradient hit the enter key and once again alt click to select that text and on the honeycomb gradient layer we're going to change our colors back to blue so let's go with the dark blue and then a light blue and now i'm going to draw that gradient so again we're going dark to light hit the enter key ctrl shift a to deselect that and now that we have the gradient shading we can hide the original text layers and let me hold ctrl zoom out the last thing i'm going to do is add a shadow to this so let's come over here to the honeycomb elements layer we can collapse the layer group and click on it and then i'm going to duplicate the layer group then we're going to right click and go to merge layer group that'll put everything on a single layer and then i'm going to click and drag this below the original layer group and finally we'll go to filters light and shadow long shadow and i'm going to change the color of this to black click ok we're going to change the style to fading fixed length and we can adjust the length of the shadow which is just how far the shadow is going down the midpoint so that's just the point at which this starts to fade out and then also the opacity so that's just basically the strength of this to about right there and click ok and now we can go to image guides remove all guides to get rid of those and here's our final logo design all right so that's it for this tutorial hopefully you liked it if you did don't forget to subscribe to my channel and click the bell icon to be notified each time i have a brand new tutorial you also check out any of the links to my
