starting lineups for tonight's game very different for the san francisco giants as roger craig tries to get his slump ridden team turned around they've lost four in a row their longest losing streak of the year a five-year losing streak so guys like candy maldonado and jeffrey leonard on the bench tonight eddie milner will lead off in flight center will clark will bat second at first base mike aldrete gets the start in left field he'll bat third chilly davis moves over to right field adding in the cleanup spot chris fire will be at third base batting fifth bob brindley does the catching tonight he'll hit sixth and the lower third of the order has robbie thompson at second matt williams at short and the pitcher mike lacoste with a record of six and three no record this year seven and six lifetime against atlanta braves going pretty much with the lineup that got them the victory last night dion james leads off and plays center ken oberfeld will play third in bat second hitting third the first baseman gerald perry dale murphy will be in right field hitting cleanup ken griffey bats fifth and left the number six enter the shortstop andres thomas then it's ozzy virgil catching glenn hubbard at second and rick mailer pitching mailer with a record of three and seven he is seven and six lifetime against the giants bob engel calls the balls and strikes steve ripley at first paul runge at second dana demuth over at third eddie milner leading it off against rick mailer kind of an overcast night here at the stadium a little bit on the warm side too milner hitting 233 no homer's one rbi facing rick miller to tell you about it here's ernie okay peter last night milner went over one of the pinch hitter the first pitch to him is it foul up by first 85 degrees and muggy in atlanta will clark to follow defensively you can see how the braves line up behind mailer who last time out fits well he beat the reds it was a 4-3 game with akra picking up the save the 01 pitch fouled away down past third atlanta won last night 7-2 alexander went the route two straight starts he pitched nine innings he's three and one downs as a loser five and three clark homered for them and griffey and virgil homart for atlanta milner broke his back he hadn't been back that long from drug rehab used to play with the reds no balls two strikes the curve is wasted he just bounced one up not a bad trick one ball two strikes when you're ahead of the count chuck tanner's had a lot of confidence in rick miller he's giving him every opportunity this year inside corner you throw to third on the strikeout that's what virgil did chuck tanner hoping that mailer can just regain that form get him up in double figures and win and he's off to a good start tonight with that fastball over the inside corner for strike three rick won his first two decisions this year lost his next seven he's always been kind of a streaky pitcher last year he won six straight games in the month of june that's what chuck tanner is hoping rick will get going some kind of a winning streak like that right about now now will clark who's a first ball hitter if he likes it he swings he liked it he swung last night he had the first pitch to him from alexander out of the ballpark then he singled in the third but then alexander quieted him down as he did the rest of the giants allowing no hits after the third inning one ball one strike aldrete is on deck and the one one high fly left center i believe james is a play on the track he does mark's got some sting boy he can hit a ball a long way with very little effort [Music] roger craig and his coaching staff well the baseball world was saddened today we had a moment's silence here before the anthem dick hauser who managed the kansas city royals to the world's championship in 85 died today of brain cancer he was 51 years old we sent along our sympathies to dick's widow nancy and twin daughters jill and jan owls are not only a very fine manager a very fine person off the glove of hubbard he still gets it we'll take another look at that as we go out this is a curveball get in the hole that hubbard knocked it down knows that aldrete has just averaged speed and gets him by a couple of steps [Music] [Music] just for the eyes [Music] is waiting for you [Music] double fresh double [Music] these are long john silver's four unique sea salads they're not your typical fast food salad how can i tell well see that shrimp that seafood those fresh vegetables even that pasta you notice how much seafood there is i think the technical term is a lot that's the difference see even though other places have salads they're just not as interested in the principle of a lot like long john silver's is long john silver [Music] sea salad sounds good to me the giants in the field behind mike lacoste who's 31 years old he'll face dion james ken overfell and gerald perry is the first three the class of tall slender guys six four 200 way back in 79 and 80. he was pitching for the reds and you thought he'd probably spend his career there he won 14 and lost eight one year 10 and 12 another but then he moved on to houston and kansas city minor leagues and bounced back last year with 10 and 13 with the giants he like just about everybody on their staff throws a split finger fastball that might have been it james two for four last night with a stolen base fastball inside we mentioned dick houser not only a very fine gentleman but a tremendous manager he spent 28 years on pro baseball he managed the new york yankees to division titles in 80 and the royals to a title in 81 world's championship in 85 but listen to these figures in six years at kansas city first the pitch down low in six years at kansas city pickhauser's teams finished first three times second twice and third once and he would never take any of the credit for the success of those teams it was always the players who did it two balls and two strikes holbrook fell on deck bounce foul pass willie stargeo coaching at first russ nixon's over at third pete van weren and ernie johnson with you from atlanta we'll be here tomorrow night too cincinnati inn for four will be television thursday and friday and sunday afternoon pitch is high james gets a walk oh he's got a good eye which is a prerequisite for being a good lead-off batter here's albert james has walked now 35 times only murphy is walk more nope hubbard has also walked more he's walked 42 times murphy's trying to extend a 13-game hitting string nobody out runner first little pop to short center eddie milner with good speed makes a catch holbrook fowl who was one for four last night is over one tonight gerald perry two for four last night with an rbi he had a double perry gradually getting that batting average up he comes in at 239. got to remember he was down around 200 for some time murphy comes to the on deck circle wouldn't surprise me to see james go he stole one last night they've got brandley back there and their combination of melvin and brentley one of the best at throwing out people in the national league melvin did not have a good night last night james back but it's not always the runner many times it's a pitcher not holding him on they pitch out that was close james going back without the slide just made it giants pitching out on the very first pitch to the hitter perry james had taken a step towards second but he was able to put the brakes on and get back of course the number of times you pitch out in the situation in which you pitch out depends on the pitcher can he afford to throw one out there if he's a wild guy you're not going to call him any pitch out to and off he might have been moving that time david palmer pitches tomorrow night against little guy hoffman who beat the rays in cincinnati for one of their wins fouled away lifetime against the giants perry's batting 390. as we got a fan picking up a souvenir it's an early start tonight fans will be coming in right through the first few innings and if we get over 13 000. pitch is low we could reach the 500 000 mark the braves come in at 487 571. only two teams other than the braves below 500 500 000 in attendance right now it's the expos and the pirates but the braves with a chance to go over it tonight there goes a runner that is ball four and the braves have runners at first and second for murphy two watts [Applause] is good [Music] murphy is 3 25 19 homers 43 rbi [Applause] had a single in an rbi last night the best hitting streak this year in the national league is the 19 that was terry pendleton before it was snapped murphy's been so consistent this year each month he's batted over 300 pitches high lacos all over the place right now murph's longest batting streak of his career was a 15-game streak back in 1985 so he's approaching that figure now a 1-0 outside we have one out overthrow flied to center there have been two walks and comes norm sherry he was a catcher he is their pitching coach they might start some action down in the left field bullpen [Music] bob melvin's headed down that way so it looks like we're going to get somebody up down there for the giants while that conversation goes on we often talk the week of the free agent draft about who the braves have drafted and give you some of the names of some of the more familiar players let's update you on one of them scott volkey the outfielder from the university of georgia he signed right away with the braves was assigned to their durham farm club that's pretty good baseball you're talking a high class a in the carolina league and in his first four games he's batting 286 has a double a couple rbis off to a good start for the durham bulls all right braves drafted about 50. cycle [Music] just because you draft 50 of course they will tell you that that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to sign them all the youngsters have decisions to make as to whether they will play pro ball right now or go on to college that's a decision for the high schoolers two balls one strike pitch to murphy low well he's nibbling out there three balls and one strike i don't blame him griffey's on deck this is ella j gilmer county community day and we hope all the fans from that area enjoy the game three in one good pitch to hit if you like it you can guess murphy's unhappy with that he was no way looking for that pitch and he went around he might have been looking breaking ball but not right on the corner three and two they might send these guys one out perry first james second they both run well not going low ball four they're going now three walks base is loaded for ken griffin you just never know what's going to happen in a ball game mike lacoste in his first 17 games had issued only 24 walks that's just a little over one walk per game and here in the first inning tonight he's already walked three and is in a heap of trouble you know who he's calling he's not calling mom to see if she wants a loaf of bread this is a grippy with the bases loaded and the reputation of the launching pad might have something to do with the bases on ball randy bacchus getting up in the giants bullpen griffey it's a taliban first one ball on strike they've got a few new players they sure do oh mike kruger won on the disabled list some of their other younger pitchers weren't quite doing the job they were looking for so they called up three youngsters one of them not really a youngster keith comstock over 30 years old but his first real try to be a major leaguer foul 1-1 to ken griffey did he hold up they're asking the third base up and he says he's swan griffey can't believe it half the fans can't either dana demuth said he swung we'll let you joe take a second look pitch was low well that was close i don't know from that angle it looks like he did go dana demuth was right from that angle now a one-two swung on line at the second baseman a double clutch murphy couldn't get that murphy's kicking himself as he knew he should never get doubled on a line drive with the bases loaded in less than two of but he was and we'll look at it again lined right at the second stacker thompson he doubles murphy and that hurt the bridge we go to the second inning no score [Music] even with all you do to keep your family healthy you may be overlooking something that could cause illness roaches now proven to carry at least six known diseases call author because orphan has protected more homes from disease-carrying pests than anyone on earth that's why they're number one and they'll make your home safe and pass all your money back call orkin today the pests they just might be all the protection you'll ever need this is my lava machine and this is my lava machine new lava liquid in 30 years of working with my hands i've never used a hand cleaner like it power a pumice in a liquid feel it powering away dirt grease just about anything powering hands clean i'm roger gustin friend when i ruffled potato chip look at them ridges full of cayenne pepper onion garlic paprika oh this is cajun spice ain't nothing flat about it hmm try new cajun spice ruffles brand potato chips with a feisty spicy bite in every crunch it's the new taste that won't leave you we're going to the second inning chili davis will it ah be followed by chris spyer than bob brentley tomorrow night u.s army gives away 10 000 painters caps the reds are here saturday dairy association gives away 15 000 team jerseys to kids 14 and under and don't forget the walt disney world series that's the weekend of july 4th 5th and 6th that's going to be a spectacular davis went one for four in last night's game one ball inside the braves are three and five with san francisco this year last year they were seven and eleven just inside hit to the man mailer should still throw him out and he does davis went over three last night it was spire who went one for four he's next and then ground out to the mound chili davis really in a fairly long slump he's now hitless in his last 20 at bats it's unusual for him too because he's a sweatshirt and makes contact just about all the time now spire he's been a surprise very pleasant surprise for the giants with six homers and 21 rbis two of the homer's grand slams pretty good way to pick up your rbi column no score in a second strike hard work has really paid off for chris fire he's really a conditioning nut you can walk into the clubhouse almost any time of the day and there he'll be working on the weights blowing away believe he's 37 having one of his most productive power years of his entire career right now foul straight back talk with ron fairley who does the giant games he agrees with many of the baseball players and managers and some broadcasters that the ball has got to be a little bit livelier than it hasn't been in the past down the right field line murphy grabs it had a little problem he got his glasses down in time ron fairley mentioned light hitters hitting home runs to the off field as his indication you can see murphy although it's not very bright here didn't take any chances very fine major league player for years i think he played 15 to 17 years bob brindley braun says he can run just as well now as he ever could when he played couldn't run a little not a bit couldn't run away one ball one try friendly at 232 didn't play last night be a great pick-me-up for the braves pitching staff if mailer could regain the touch last night alexander was something there's sometimes a pitcher might hold up a bit getting hammered early but he just got back to business and really pitched well after that first inning a little pop foul out of play young pitchers could really learn a lesson watching doyle alexander he admitted after the game last night that in the first inning after the first two hitters had gotten a single in a home run he didn't know how long he was going to be around but he didn't change the way he pitched he just kept throwing strikes because that's the way he pitches and he said if it's going to happen to you you're going to get hit hard it's going to happen to you but it didn't happen to him the rest of the night holberg foul without number three friendly thrown out as obi moves to his left we go to the bottom of the second still the same no score [Music] funny thing about pitching you can warm up some days and just think you're going to get everybody out your stuff is terrific the catcher says i don't know how anybody can hit you you're just blazing away you go out there and you're taking a shower in the first inning after the first and then because you can't get anybody out it might be because you get a little cocky then other days you feel that i don't know if i got much today and you go out and you pitch a little bit more and all of a sudden like alexander he regained his stuff last night and went on to pitch a very good ball game in the major leagues boy it when they say pitcher that's what they mean they don't mean thrower that's what roger craig pointed out after last night's game talking about alexander rogers said that doyle didn't have a great fastball he didn't have a great slider but he had great control and a tremendous amount of guts yeah two balls two strikes foul away courage guts if you will i mean that's an ingredient sometimes it's hard to determine in the youngster but until he competes against people just as good as he is two two swing a miss he struck him out that's the book on andres thomas when you get two strikes on him trying to get him to swing at something out of the strike zone look where that pitch was right up around his chin but he will chase one out of the strike zone he's not a real discipline hitter yet virgil homer here last night he hit it to center field he's already bettered last year's homer total curveball in there on one bob engel's a good umpire he's calling the balls and strikes i'm inclined to think he's a pitcher's umpire he swung at that went more than halfway on too one thing different about bob engel he doesn't use the same call for every strike like most umpires do he's got about 50 different ways of calling a strike including a little dance step he does every now and then he and fred brockland there right yeah well it gets boring calling it the same one one ball tuesday hubbard's on deck we have no score bray's had a great opportunity in the first inning here the bases loaded in only one out griffey hit a line drive at the second baseman and murphy was doubled off first lacoste walked three in the very first didn't get hurt friendly with a sign lacoste with the pitch bouncer out the short should be an easy play and it is matt williams throws him out now glenn hubbard one of the leaders on on base percentage internationally hubbard has seen his average drop to 297 he went over four last night and he dropped under the magic number little sidearm pitch hit the short going to be a very easy second inning we go to the third with no score the braves fun book a book of games puzzles and trivia is one of the items you can find in the braves clubhouse collection to order your catalog today send your name address in one dollar to braves catalog post office box 4006 atlanta georgia 30302 curb is high for mailer it's the top of the third the batter good curveball one ball one fin williams is on deck bouncer toward deep short thomas glides in and throws them out well on our ticker today we re we heard that arbitrated george nikola we believe that's how you pronounce it cause a little stir he said that the san diego padres improperly released pitcher lamar hoyt and he reduced commissioner peter yubros suspension of the pitcher from one year to 60 days he said it was for disciplinary action joan crock who might be forced to pay the remaining 3.2 million of his contract said the club would not reinstate him and as lamar hoyt some drug problems and also as they mentioned in the release the taking of valium and painkiller pills across the border from mexico that's going to cause a lot of talk it will a lot of controversy on the outside corner fastball the slow curve he's sucking on williams over two last night strikes out tonight on a slow curve well like gene garber with his change-up rick maler with a slow curve ball has a lot of success when he can throw it for strikes against young hitters who haven't seen it very often now mike lacoste against rick mailer mailer trying to knock him off one two three for three straight innings delivers outside the cost of adding a hundred strike on the outside corner one ball one shot the cubs won again today beat the phillies 5-3 moyer over raleigh smith to save shu and russell home runs philadelphia fernando valenzuela having problems again but he is winning right now curve outside they're in the bottom of the seventh of san diego it's seven to five dodgers valenzuela against whitson tigers beat toronto 3-2 outside canada beat clancy over 40 000 at toronto what a franchise milwaukee five over minnesota clear beat striker larkin home run minnesota sirhoff and yacht hit home run that is all for mike lacoste and rick miller has had three perfect innings with three strikeouts we move to the bottom of the third fan we got something going here the this evening we're going to the bottom of the third there's been no run scored by either team there have been no hits by either team rick miller to play here's b okay thank you ernie mailer batting 118 no homer's three rbis at 118 batting average really low for him he's a better hitter than that most years and he takes a strike at the knees from mike lacoste a ball and a strike now on mailer dion james will follow and then ken oberfeld here's the 1-1 there's a drive to deep left field aldrete going back it is over his head off the wall mailer heads for second here comes the throw and he slides in safely that's his second double of the year and that's the first hit of the ball game for either club i don't know why i should be surprised richard croker said mailer is going to lead off with a double so i was expecting it be surprised [Laughter] hit that ball hard got in the second ahead of the throw now james will try to pull it to get mailer over to third dion walked in the first inning one of three first inning walks issued by mike lacoste did not pull the ball instead a fly ball to left field aldrete there to make the catch and mailer has to hold at second base though the runner is still at second with one out and ken oberkel will step in o'brickville get a fly ball to center field in the first inning [Music] have to be a long single to get mailer in he does not have any speed lacoste checking mailer now the pitch to obergfell misses up eyeball one no score bottom half of the third braves and the giants meeting for the ninth time this year giants have won five the braves three in the season series thus far one-o to overfell hit foul off to the right frames again trying to win one to get back to the 500 mark they've been bouncing up and down above and below that 500 mark for a little over a month now the way the race is if you could hang around 500 i'd take it say uh middle of august and you might have a chance because no one seems to be running away with it thank you there with a fastball one and two also the way the race is if you win five or six in a row if you're one of those four or five teams bunch near the top you might find yourself in first place boy houston's playing well they're pitching they're jumping out right now dave smith has not given up a run this year he's a relief pitcher they're one of the best in baseball he hasn't given up a run this is june 17th and he has an era of zero and the year of the offense besides yeah [Music] two and two of the count now in overfill one man out with mailer at second lacoste deals just inside full count now three and two gerald perry on deck tomorrow night the reds will be here david palmer against guy hoffman 7 35 air time tomorrow night and friday night here's the 3-2 from lacoste and there's a ground ball fouled on the right side lacoste began the year in the starting rotation and then he was taken out of the rotation for a while pitched eight games out of the bullpen mostly in long and middle relief working quite deliberately with that runner and scoring position in the 3-2 pitch on the way to obergfell fly ball left center again now alverny comes over and there are two outs mailers still at second that'll bring up gerald perry who drew a walk back in the first [Music] perry's done a good job in run scoring situations he's hit well with runners in scoring position see if he can come through with a two out hit here he's over 300 now the outside corner on one there you see what he's done lately the 01 on the way right in on the hands of gerald perry on the inside corner oh and two seems to be pitching all these lefties in tight doesn't he see what he does here ahead of the count nothing in two mailers still at second base he let off the ending with a double there are now two outs up and away with that one and it's filed into the upper deck still owen do that missed low a ball and two strikes dale murphy in the on deck circle we are scoreless bottom half of the third inning little different grip another fly ball to left field mike aldrete handles all three put outs as the braves ways to lead off double nothing doing for atlanta in the bottom of the third we've played three in atlanta and we're still scoreless some recliners can cause quite a commotion that's why berkline invented touch motion chairs popular berkline styling real berkline comfort touch motion chairs fit close to the wall and they have a push button so just the touch of the finger gives you a very smooth and quiet ride commotion or new burkline touch motion for father's day save 100 on berkline touch motion and other chairs automatically the deacon into a border finds bugs and kills them forever be gone you may think you've killed all the fleas but what about their eggs you can't see them but free eggs are everywhere you need decon free kill fogger it kills fleas and hatching eggs econ flea kill fogger kills the fleas kills the hatching eggs begun [Music] all right there's the grip of the split finger fastball by lacoste now we picked that up good camera work tom smith got that picture right away and uh he could deke you though he could uh he could go to his uh stretch position and change that you wouldn't think that he would ever just hold it that way because the third base coach would pick it up and flash the side but on that particular case he did have it in that grip and that's what he threw for the pitch we go to the top half of the fourth inning still no score rick mayer's retired all nine men he's faced and he'll be back to the top of the order now eddie milner will clark and mike already milner looked at a third strike his first time up mailer's first pitch on the way foul back out of play for the fans that are watching if we talk about this split finger it's a pitch of the 80s if you just want to feel how it is next time your son has a baseball just take the baseball and put it in between your index finger and your middle finger and that's the start of it and see how difficult it would be to throw 60 feet six inches that is just one part of the pitch yeah to make the pitch dip properly that ball really has to get some overspin coming off your thumb and that is why some pitchers simply aren't able to throw it they just can't get that ball to spin properly when they release it that's why i don't think it's just the same pitch as the old fork ball was the fork ball you put it between those two fingers and just throw it and sometimes it would dance around a little bit sometimes it would sink but i think the split fingers got a little bit of a different release involving the thumb one ball two strikes on milner mailer will handle this one and he's retired 10 straight [Applause] that'll bring up will clark who fly to center his first time up want to send along get well wishes to marry maloney watching tonight up in binghamton new york her granddaughter pam maloney works for turner broadcasting and does just about everything for that company will clark who loves the first pitch binghamton used to have a team in the old eastern league that was where i first broadcast the old binghamton triplets in the eastern leg mailer wastes one up and away of all those strikes that might have been a knuckle he'll throw one now and then now the 1-0 how to play well clark a very impressive hitter last night he got his two hits one off a fastball one off a changeup both on the first pitch he waited very nicely on the changeup hit his home run next time up he got a fast pull on the first pitch and drilled that one into center field for a base hit again how to play one and two many times young hitters in particular will really have problems with change ups early in their career but park seems to handle that pitch quite well and mailer's got him set up now for perhaps one of those off-speed curve balls for the count one and two nope he threw him a fastball and missed inside two and two the change up i believe for a pitcher is one of the most important pitches he can learn and for the batter it's learning to hit a changeup yeah man strikes will clark that's the fourth strikeout for rick mailer and that's 11 straight retired by mailer this just doesn't get up there look at that slow curve good spot low now the left fielder mike aldrete we've been told by the braves they like to try to keep the ball in on mike aldrete and he likes the ball on the outside part of the plate hits a lot to left and left center call strike nothing in one he has eight rbi feet and all of them been on the road good looking young hitter you can play first base or the outfield nothing into the count this is only the 17th game aldrete has started and in the games that he started he's hitting 367. there's the pitch in on him one and two two men out bases empty were scoreless in the top half of the fourth inning in again i think you'll find a lot of hitters coming out of college which is where already played he played at stanford a lot of hitters coming out of college if they're good hitters they're going to be able to handle pitches down and away because that's the way a lot of college pitchers are pitching these days he didn't handle that one though fastball down and away struck him out that's the fifth strikeout for rick mailer and he has now retired 12 giants hitters in a row they go to the bottom half of the fourth inning still scoreless [Music] new oatmeal raisin crisp big crispy flakes made with real oatmeal raisins and bits of almonds and that's what we've done to oatmeal you can even try it free look for specially marked packages if you got an itch scratch it [Music] hello wilson some party some pool in the water is so sparkling blue clear and mine is so dull my pool stays beautiful with fire guard and no problems not the bioguard you even get free water an hour free join the party oh wilson bring your pool to biogarden make your pool a party bioguard pool and spa chemicals call 1-800-874-8000 it's touch and gold but you're thinking about those mars roasted almonds you're looking for that little reward yeah you're hanging on cause you're dreaming bout that mars buttery caramel you've got your mind on a mars mars bar makes it all worthwhile one great little reward [Music] bottom half of the fourth inning still no score dale murphy leads it off for the braves he walked in the first inning one of three walks issued all in the first inning by the cost but he pitched out of trouble up the middle and dale murphy has a 14-game hitting streak that is just one game shy of his all-time high as a brave going back even further he's hit safely now in 24 of his last 25 ball games that was the split finger you see it start to sink you didn't get it outside and it wasn't really low enough and uh murphy popped it in the center field just out of the wreath of williams and now the braves with two hits off mike lacoste here's ken griffey who lined into that four three double play back in the first inning you know you can stop anywhere you want in your stretch position lacoste has a little bit of a different pause he uh finishes rather high doesn't come down around the waist just as long as you stop the umpire doesn't care where downstairs to griffey ball one some of the braves talking before the game about how many bucks are being called by nationally gunfires this year and how they feel that's leading to the high stolen base totals around the league pitchers aren't able to get away with that move runners are able to get a much better jump off most pitchers there's a drive to right center field chilly davis on the run can't get it all the way to the wall murphy will head for third he'll stop there and griffey down at second with a stand-up double murphy had to hold up before he got to second base to see if the ball would be caught for ken griffey double number 14 of the season some of the fans thought that murphy could score but a speedman she had to make sure that davis didn't catch it and russ nixon is never going to let the first out be made at third or home it's the same situation never make the first out at home or a third so now the braves in good shape at second and third nobody else and andres thomas the batter he was a strikeout victim his first time the infield in it first and third about halfway at second and short for the giants and lacoste deals a strike to thomas 0-1 murphy would have been out if they ever tried to wave him because the relay was good now the 01 coming grounded towards short the runners are going to have to hold williams on to first for out number one been a bit of a frustrating game so far for atlanta braves had the bases loaded only one man out in the first inning griffey hit into that line drive double play then they got a lead off double in the third from rick mailer and he never got beyond second base now second and third nobody out but one man is gone ozzy virgil the scheduled hitter will they walk him and pitch to hubbard or take their chances with virgil that's what they're talking about right now hubbard's hitting over 400 i believe with runners in scoring position virgil's hitting about 200 and something with runners in scoring position we'll see what decision manager roger craig has made here a lot of pitchers don't like the pitch carefully to him so right away roger craig is saying we're not either going to pitch to him or not we're not going to pitch carefully we will lock him to pitch to hubbard because he gives you a play at every base they're looking for a double play but also they should consider the fact that hubbard has it well with runners in scoring position but they're looking for the double play here it was just a choice would you rather face virgil and hubbard or hubbard and mailer yeah and they're going to take the chances with hubbard and mailer with the faces loaded this will be the fourth walk issued by lacoste so now glenn hubbard bats with the bases full and we'll see if roger craig's strategy works here hubbard rounded out to short his first time up [Music] [Applause] infield double play depth spire could come home with the ball from third strike call to glenn hubbard hitler's in his last 12 at bats so he's due virgil off first griffey off second murphy off third braves trying to break the scoreless tie here in the bottom half of the fourth inning one ball one strike [Applause] hubbard 432 with runners in scoring position 17 rbi lacoste working slowly here's the 1-1 right to the pitcher and another double play how do you like that the braves and another bases loaded one out situation and lacoste gets out of it with another line drive double play the braves have left five men on over the first four innings and all five of them have been left either at second or third we go to the fifth inning still no score [Music] i'll move better in the night [Music] oh [Music] presenting the faucet funny thing about faucets you might think want to remind you too on those dates july 4th 5th and 6th gates will be opening a little bit earlier so plan to be here i'll say two hours to an hour and a half before game time to get settled for the big disney show followed by the game chilly davis leads off to fifth in a scoreless contest davis thrown out pitcher to first his first time up rick mailer's retired all 12 giants hitters he's faced davis trying to battle his way out of an over 20 slump you don't very often see chile hitting that low of 248. count goes to two and nothing davis spire and brindley do up here in the fifth inning obergfell and foul territory called off now by andres thomas and that is 13 in a row set down by rick maynard one out in the fifth inning chris spire the batters fire fly to right he's been playing third base in the absence of chris brown who suffered a broken jaw brown had a quote in this morning's newspaper that i don't quite understand he said when he broke the jaw he's never been in as much pain in his life he said it was totally numb i thought if it was totally numb you couldn't feel a thing swinging a mess at a fastball oh one chris brown by the way is due to be coming off the disabled list any day now for the giants they thought he might be ready for this series but that didn't happen he's been wired shut for quite a while here's the 0-1 ground ball the first gerald perry handles this one and so far rick mayler making this look awfully easy 14 straight retired by mailer and really no difficult chances in the game yet bob brendlio for one he grounded out to third back in the second so breaking ball missed inside deep to left field griffey goes back looks up and this one's gone the giants have taken a one-nothing lead bob friendly who has had so many good ball games in this ballpark jumped on a 1-0 rick mailer pitch for his third homer of the year and the first giant hit gives them the first run of the night the no hitter in a shutout went with that curveball i believe that's what it was let's watch guess it was a high curve he hit it right down over the 3 30 mark now robbie thompson who grounds it out to short his first time and there's a liner caught by oberspell to end the inning but the no hitter ends after mailer retired 14 straight and the hit that breaks it up gives the giants a one-nothing lead as we go to the bottom of the fifth [Music] now's brinner and bronson they were only seven against an army the magnificent seven 8 15 eastern on the superstation tonight pete rose's cincinnati red machine collides head on with the never say die atlanta braves live on the super station [Music] braze versus red 7 35 eastern tomorrow night now we go to the bottom half of the fifth inning bob brundley ruined the shutout the no-hitter the perfect game of rick mailer by homering just inside the foul pole down the left field line and the giants have the one-nothing lead mike lacasse has been in plenty of hot water but he's he's come out clean in the first inning bases loaded one up griffey line the ball at the second baseman turns it into a double play and last inning with the bases loaded one out after the braves open the inning with a single and a double glenn hubbard lined right back to lucas to turn it into a double play here's rick mailer and he takes down low ball one skip carrie jon sterling with you now from the stadium the braves try to battle back from a one-nothing deficit that's matt williams throwing out mailer 108 the braves haven't exactly belabored lukas they only have three hits themselves two doubles and one single and lacasse has walked four all of us at tbs like to wish ul harley senior of savannah georgia happy birthday he is 98 years young today dion james bounces off clark's glove it'll be a base hit to right field james gets a bad hop single and the braves have the tying run on clark right in front of that ball and hit something between the edge of the grass and the dirt kind of like a pebble and bounced right over his shoulder now james who has hit very well against san francisco gets a bad hop single and here's ken obrechfeld over two little toss over there but james is back down low on the count 1-0 mike lacasse was on baseball's junk pile a couple years ago invited by the giants to spring training non-roster player taught the split finger fastball by roger craig and his career has really revived just about every giant on the stand throws a split finger just about that's fouled at the plate so the count one and one orbit fell a very consistent player those figures support that he basically is going to hit his 280 maybe 290 every year and field his position very well that's bounce foul of the first baseline so obrick fell behind on the count one and two [Music] the braves coming into the game only three and a half games out of first place only three back on the lost side the giants only a game and a half back houston a half game back the reds are still in first place they play the astros tonight and then coming to atlanta for a four game series beginning tomorrow evening la casa head one and two to ob james gets back this is not the pitch to do it overfelt pretty good hitting run man but he's behind on the count one and two hit hard face it right field james takes the turn but holds on davis has a good arm and he was playing shallow so he fielded the ball right away and once again the braves out base runners against mike lacasse look like either a breaking ball or a split finger we couldn't really tell but sharply hit nonetheless well the braves have first and second one out and here's gerald perry perry like glenn hubbard has hit very well with men in scoring position 15 for 46 this year that's an average of 326. and for whatever reason really hits giants pitching bounce weekly let's see if they can get two yes double play six four three and once again mike lacoste pitches out of trouble with men on base no runs on two hits the braves leave one and on bob brentley's home run at the end of five the giants lead it one nothing welcome to the taste of paradise bakade tropical fruit mixers [Applause] icy cool made from luscious blends of tropical fruit then fresh frozen so they mixed simply for you perfectly with friends but cardi tropical fruit mixer perfectly simple simply perfect now in two delicious new flavors it's 3 42 when afternoon practice means afternoon hunger if i'm dancing and i'm hungry i eat snickers and then i can dance again the first step is eating the snickers bar and getting rid of my hunger so i can get onto the next step which is playing ball you know my mom will keep snickers in the cabin in the kitchen you know and i'll go get one and it fills me up push me through till dinner snickers crunchy peanuts peanut butter nougat caramel and milk chocolate i'm so hungry packed with peanut snickers really satisfied [Music] not me i'm getting a crew cut i couldn't be a brat girl why not you're much more what they're looking for you're right well maybe i am pretty enough no how about a little miss brick good idea not you me you really do have great hair yeah yeah that was my hairspring not so fast i'm inspired i thought the crew cut was a swell idea beautiful hair brick great value part of a pretty good crowd out atlanta fulton county stadium for this early ball game and it's been kind of a strange ball game rick mayler retired 14 in a row until bob brundley a brave killer from way back lofted a home run just inside the foul pole last inning that's the only run of the game the breaking ball fouled off by matt williams strike one melee's second good start in a row maybe his third good start he had a very good one in cincinnati a game he won last friday he went seven innings tonight he has been near perfect just the brimley fly ball home run not pitch down the low of account 1-1 that is jeff robinson andre's thomas balance throws out williams went away you think it would change the luck if we told the blind snake and blind rabbit joke oh i can't wait for you to tell that this blind snake and this blind rabbit were making their way through the jungle and they bumped head to head against one another and they both apologized to the others saying i'm sorry but i i can't see and the rabbit said well i i wish you would do me a favor and sort of check me out tell me what i am mike lucas the pitcher is up man the is outside ball one and so the snake checked him over and said well you said you've got a lot of fur and you've got four legs and big long ears he said i think you're a rabbit the rabbit said well thank you very much and the snake said would you do the same for me and tudo the rabbit said of course and he checked him out and he said well you're sort of clammy and reptilian and you have a forked tongue you must be a television producer [Laughter] oh that will warm the cockles of the hearts of all tv producers out there that presupposes that television producers have hearts and of course there are very few people who want warm cockles there's a strike to lacasse and the count three and one so jeff robinson warming up just in case lacasse runs into trouble in the bottom half of the sixth there's a strike on the count three and two lacasse has been in trouble throughout the braves haven't been able to close the deal bob brimley's home run has given the giants a one nothing lead that is cork to left center field griffey on the track runs it down two [Applause] way say what about griffey as this year has gone along he has really improved as a defensive outfielder you might think that would be unusual for a guy his age but he spent time as a part-time player in new york and played some first base over there and he's really just getting back into the groove as far as playing the outfield is concerned and he really has become a better hitter i mean he's always been a good line driver but griffey now just turns on the ball more and it has more power and that has happened to a lot of major league ball players as they get up in years they actually learn how to handle pitches at home runs here's eddie milner with two outs hey rick mailer has been absolutely perfect except for one batter that one batter could cost him the game two-way here in the giant sixth that is fouled away josh marx is in the booth behind us and well there was an mvp award for one series that would go to josh last weekend in cincinnati where he can't see the ball at all and as a cameraman that's really trouble he found the ball all the time terrific the o2 fastball just misses inside one and two snake in the rabbit eh yeah yep probably means we'll have to go to another meeting fouled away when you get a look at the giants bullpen and jeff robinson see if he can figure out what his nickname is with the giants when he's up again when we can show him to you here's the one-two obrechfeld digs it out and another one two three inning for mayor nothing across for the giants but at the end of five and a half san francisco still leads it for one nothing [Music] murph leaves off the bottom of the six the braves have put all the people on base and the giants have scored the only run of the game one run one hit one base runner for the giants they lead at one nothing and murph takes it outside dale walked his first arm up then singled to centerfield that was back in the fourth and the braves had a great scoring opportunity murph singled and griffey doubled the right center second and third knowing out the braves didn't score two now on murph with robinson about ready the giants probably won't wait too long with lukas if he gets in trouble again he's been in trouble big time trouble in three innings and the count 3-0 if he throws to dale's liking you can almost bet that murph has the green light here except betting is illegal in georgia and pretty much elsewhere not in alabama taking three and one that is the fifth walk given up by lacasse only one of them intentional and roger craig waits no longer like the guy who owns the vineyards vineyards roger craig comes out he's already signaled to the bullpen so jeff robinson will be the next giants pitcher it's been a strange game here lucas has lifted one batter in the six and he's pitching a shutout a five-hit shout out but a shutout nonetheless so lacasse leaves jeff robinson comes in and we'll see what jeff does when we return after this every pitch low if he gets the ball up he can be hit but for the most part when you see robinson pitch you're astounded by all the pitches that are at the knees or below murph at first base snowing out bottom of the six braves trail at one nothing griffey ripped a line drive at second baseman robbie thompson who turned it into a double play in the first inning with the bases loaded and then he doubled murphy to third and that inning ended the fourth with hubbard lining the ball at lacasse who turned it into a double play down low 1-0 meanwhile rick mailer has been well-known perfect for six innings allowing one man to get on base bob brentley loft at a home run with two outs in the fifth down the line and that's the the only run of the game that was a split finger and the count one and one one and two if robinson's pitching well he can go all the way but if not he can serve as a pretty good setup man for scott garros to come in in the 8th or 9th we're in the sixth just got a piece and stayed alive as bob brinley couldn't hold on the way to hit against a split finger fastball is really to take it comes up there if it's low it comes up in the strike zone then drops out of it when you have two strikes on you obviously you have to protect the plate swing on anything that you think is near a strike that bounces up there so the count two and two that griffy took that one out of the strike zone so the count goes to three and two now do you have murphy running three and two there is no one out he's going ball four [Applause] again the braves have a rally atlanta had bases loaded one out in the first didn't score had a leadoff double in the third didn't score had second and third knowing out in the fourth and one out the bases loaded and didn't score and had first and second one out in the fifth and didn't score now they have first and second knowing out in the sixth andres thomas as you look at chuck tanner just about a sure bet to bunt [Music] spire is in it third will clark is in it first braves start to get their bullpen busy just in case they get down to rick mailer the rotation play is on and the pitch is out of the strike zone ball one boy is that tempting when a manager sees that to let the guy swing away there's jim acker and the braves bullpen getting ready now spire goes to the mound to tell jeff robinson whether or not the rotation will be on or whether spire will anchor at third base if the rotation is on you have the entire middle of the infield open having the shortstop is racing toward third to get there the second baseman racing toward first in the third baseman in first baseman racing toward the plate there's no in the middle of the infield bun is on pitches down low 2-0 now i i guess you have him take a pitch because the count 2-0 and we'll see how chuck tanner plays it against spyer giving the signals in the infield the giants one run one hit and no errors and only one base runner the braves no runs five hits no errors they've also had six walks 3-0 robinson low all right but too low out of the strike zone and bouncing him up there now do you make him throw two strikes and then hit away this is how managers earn their living it really is i think you certainly take a strike although you might be tempted you know you're gonna get a fastball down the gut yeah oh i'd take one too that's don zimmer one of roger craig's lieutenants and the giants dug out and now the braves have them loaded up with no one out that's robinson's second walk and the seventh gee there's no one out here in the bottom of the six and the braves have already had 12 base hunters ozzy virgil won grand slam home run september 2nd 1983 when he was with the phillies there was a of the giants by the way that's right ain't already bacchus up in the giants bullpen murphy is at third and griffey at second andres thomas at first and no one out there's a strike a breaking ball in the outside corner the giants are playing the shortstop matt williams and second base and robbie thompson about halfway they could come home that bounces up there one and one let's see coming into this inning jeff robinson and yielded 23 walks in 51 innings maybe about four game maybe a little more roger craig comes to the mount and the entire infield they have a lot of meetings this ball club and they have one more of them except for chris fire he's been around a long time he's heard it all what was the great line of dow maxwell who talked about meetings ah they're all the same play the little guys in play the big guys deep [Music] it's been a daffy game and if the braves lose it it really will be a daffy game bases loaded knowing out bottom of the six giants lead at one nothing and virgil ready to swing at a 1-1 pitch and the count one and two all three base runners have reached on walks in this inning murph at third griffey at second and thomas at first the giants have doled out seven walks just inside but jeff robinson had great movement that was a split finger but see that ball tail into ozzy virgil said the count two and two [Applause] hit hard in the hole knocked down it'll be a base hit the game is tied up and the bases are still loaded with no one out virgil gets an rbi matt williams made a heck of a play he smothered the ball to stop it from going through or the braves would have the lead and now the braves have tied it up and still knowing out here's glenn hubbard williams saved perhaps another run there as he knocked it down had he had the ball not rolled away from him he might have had a play at third on griffey though i think spyer was too far off the bag braves have a chance to make some hay now as he gets his 32nd rbi here's glenn hubbard there's a strike robinson he never white that's amazing how low every single one of his pitches are he's tough guys well roger craig expects to lead the league in wild pitches because of the split finger but when you're in this kind of spot it's really testy it's almost like a knuckleball release pitcher [Music] [Applause] it'll be a 1-1 to hub chop foul that was up a little bit that was about the most hittable pitch he's thrown on the count one and two rick mailer on deck jim acker has stopped throwing but he hasn't sat down either there's griffey at third thomas is the runner and virgil at first it would be tough to lift rick mailer after how he's pitched in six innings though the one two struck him out might have gotten a piece but brimley hung on and now mailer will be lifted here's the strikeout there's the split finger fastball at its best by the time it when he started his swing it was in the strike zone by the time his bat crossed the plate it was almost in the dirt rick mailer is lifted for great nettles as chuck tana goes with a big hit now the ball game is tied at one mailer pitches the best six innings of his life i don't believe he can pitch better than that brentley did it a fly ball down the left-field line which kind of snuck over the fence for the giants run that was the only guy who reached base against mailer and the outs were not very tough though jim acker will come on on the seventh and now we'll see if greg nettles can give mailer a chance to win this ball game well he's due he's been struggling since mid-may chuck tanner knows that those stats what greg has done against jeff robinson in his career nettles is a lowball hitter like most left-hand hitters most powerful left-hand hitters he's going to see a low pitch robinson doesn't throw any other kind strike one giants run on one hit the braves are run on six hits bases loaded one out and nettles in a big hole on two one and two well if you're a catcher catching this guy you deserve combat he really bounces them up there but the braves would love to have him and so would every other team in baseball he doesn't he never gets a pitch as high as the belt down in the strike zone the 2-2 there's a split finger and that's tulo good eye by greg nettles in the count three and two now is when you think robinson would have to get a pitch up a little bit at least start the pitch at the belt make sure it's in the strike zone maybe throw the straight fast ball and catch the hitter drop robinson does have good stuff he has pretty good basketball chop high it'll get a run in only play the first well the braves haven't exactly beaten up on the giants this inning but they do take a two on lead nittles gets an rbi as he grounds out 4-3 roger craig comes out and they'll either decide to walk james which i doubt or bring in the left-handed which i think he's got to bring somebody in this is a second trip for nettles that's his 18th rbi and another meeting at the mount and again chris fire declines to attend now jeff robinson leaves comstock takes another warm-up he's going to come in tell you what even though he did not pitch well here tonight i'm glad to see him out of the ball game he is tough me too me too keith comstock comes in out of the giants bullpen and we'll come back right after this [Music] he has 15 stolen bases and 19 attempts and he and deion james sometimes play in the same outfield when griffey is injured or needs a day off sometimes hall plays in place of james but he's become kind of the the fourth outfielder and get some playing time and they promptly walk albert hall so comstock will go at ken oberfeld the eighth walk given up by giants pitching and what it does is put some pressure on mr comstock to throw strikes to oberfelt comstock in ten innings of pitching has given up four walks [Applause] here is obi who has a single on three trips it now is rick mailer's game to win if jim acker and the braves can hold this lead through the final three innings thomas at third virgil at second and albert hall at first good curveball for a strike obergefell has yet to hit a major league home run this grand slam home run this would be an appropriate time i think lying hard but foul down the right field line so orbit fell in the hole 0-2 to comstock comstock and bob horner just missed each other in japan comstock had pitched there for years now is with the giants first year [Music] just missed inside with a fastball comstock was running to the dugout now the count one and two on ob two outs bottom of the six they are loaded up again the braves have a two-one lead the curve ball bounced right back to the mound comstock did his job for the braves they get in two runs on one hit and leave three more and now the end of six innings of late atlanta two san francisco paul goes to center field here in the top of the seventh and there is the new braves pitcher jim actor rick maler was phenomenal he fit six innings and allowed just one man to get on base unfortunately that guy bob bradley hit another home run against the braves the 12th of this curious hit about 66 major league home runs 12 against the braves now jim acker who has pitched very well of late in fact in his last game he relieved mailer and pitched two perfect one two three innings against the reds to ensure melee's win that was back on friday and can win it he cannot lose it and anchor tries to hold the two one lead as we go to the seventh the number two hitter in the giants lineup will clark will lead off for san francisco in the seventh and then tell you about it here skip okay john thank you clark has flied to center he's struck out and he is a first ball hitter he came in at 3 37. a first ball line drive left center base hit clark around first he will hold there as griffey hustles it back in you know we don't get to see wally joyner or don mattingly but will clark has to be or will be in years to come perhaps in their class he is a terrific hitter and his doll feels and hits with power i wonder why when the guys hit the first pitch virtually every trip to the plate in the series you would throw him a fastball down the middle on the first pitch that's why he by the way hits the first pitch because pitchers want to get ahead in the count mike aldrete is the banner tying around at first fastball low one ball no strengths now already davis inspire i'll have a chance to get the giants back on top or tie it up fly ball left theo griffey over near the line and on the track and he's got it clark heads for second the throw is a bustling play by will clark that ball was pretty well hit to the off field by aldrete and the tying run is in scoring position with one out very alert play by clark chilly davis nevada he is hitless as is everyone except brentley and now pork davis having a disappointing year he's hitting 246 now tying around second one out now they're going to appeal that he left too soon and get no satisfaction from steve ripley who is working i think his 12th straight braves game had something i asked pete today is he with every crew is there more than one of him that's not fair to him really yeah a little bit low and away four as we have all discovered in our lives familiarity at times breeds contempt the one-o last strike over the outside corner evens it up in one on one good breaking glow a ball and two strikes that was anchor's curve which he uses very infrequently the magnificent seven follows the baseball telecast tonight a terrific flick got him another breaking ball hacker records his first strikeout but now he's got to get a tough veteran chris spire who's even tougher in spots like this that's a pretty curve kind of a backdoor curve right on the outside corner anchor has been primarily a fastball slider pitcher since it came to the bridge and they're trying to get him to use that curveball more because he's got a pretty good one and it also serves as an off-speed pitch for it spire is hit to the right side twice looped into left center field on comes albert hall he's going to get there and the ending is over and acker pitches out a seventh inning treble one hit no runs no hairs in a runner left you look at it again as we go out we move to the bottom of the seventh the braves cling to a 2-1 lead [Music] why you joe brenner steve mcqueen charles bronson james coburn robert vaughn horst bucholtz right are six of the magnificent seven see if you can come up with the seventh i don't know but i know john does i have to tell you something about richard croker no you don't the pits butted but hard toward thirds fire up throws him out one away why would you have to tell me anything as dull as that he's such a little devil and so ingenuous and on this promo card in front of us listing the magnificent seven he has yule brita's name spelled y-u-l-e well happy holidays to richard and brenner b-r-e-n-n-e well croaker is the kind of guy who can brighten the room by leaving it meanwhile roger craig is on his way to the mouth he went two-thirds of an innings allowed no hits walked one and allowed no runs so bacchus gets the call comstock departs and we'll be back after this not awesome see what it should be de murphy but now the poetic justice would be if murphy hit one out against bankers and of course they lose mike aldridge a pretty good lefty hitter strike right in there oh and won the count there's a drive deep right center field that buzz got a chance it's out of here well the first thing i want is skip carry selecting stocks murph goes out and gets an outside pitch low and drives it over the right center field wall [Applause] this really might be dale murphy's best all-around year he never had a batting average this high he is so consistent he's now hitting 14 straight games the braves have a 3-1 lead and roger craig is once again at the mound and comstock will come in from right field and the giants have to get another outfielder out there now the words were barely out of my partner's mouth and then murphy line went over the right center field wall [Applause] okay so chilly davis who looks a little perplexed by this whole thing goes back to right field jeff leonard goes into left and keith comstock with another cameo appearance comes back on the pitch i'm going to count this as his second time because i've already filled in all the numbers for his first time around now he doesn't get eight warm-up toss oh me [Music] so griffey the left-hand hitter against the southport high one ball no strikes for murphy by the way his 20th homer is 44th rbi he's two out of two with a couple of walks it's 3-1 atlanta and griffey was trying to return the compliment well comstock got to look at that home run up probably up more up close and personal than he's ever seen one in his life sometimes you can stick all that right-handed left-handed stuff where the sun fails to shine and also you can manage as you know the old line by bouton i managed as good as i could but the players didn't play very well you can manage all right you can make all the right moves but they aren't right moves unless the players execute so here's andrus thomas thomas has struck our bounce to shorten walks braves could use a little insurance in what has been a most peculiar baseball game looped into center field with a runner going base hit briefly on his way to third and the brands bid to break it open here thomas boops the single to center on the hit and run and ozzy virgil back let's see the picture of comstock again down low it was a fastball you see the phantom double play being executed by matt williams has great camera work that's a great shot he saw everything in that one shot and thomas just reached across kind of blooped at the center field so the braves have a chance to extend their lead with first and third and one out that's john perlman who was in in last night's game the young right-handed that the giants obtained from the cousins funny thing the first trip to the mound comstock pitched very well this time after being called in from right field he's surrendered a couple of hits i don't know if there's any significance to that or not and we still don't know who the seventh guy in the magnificent seven was either here comes roger craig again and the fans are all over him let's see what he does this time he's heading toward the point on fire i think he's going to announce that steve ripley is coming on to pitch no i can't do that now wait a minute who have we here looks like harry's filming was harry snowman going to third i guess but this this game has turned into a moto ball event i think john perlman is in the pitch comstock leaves for good as far as tonight is concerned we're sure he's out of there this time spire made the last out so spillman i guess will hit ninth and then pearlman will hit frankly right now we'll be back [Music] [Applause] [Music] like many before you came here asking for just one thing a chance you're here to make [Music] here's to you beechwood aids for that clean crisp taste that makes budweiser the king of beers this buzz for you harry spillman at third base bats in the ninth spot on the order and john pearlman the pitcher bats fifth to recapitulate there is one out one in and runners at first and third and ozzy virgil will be the batter against pearlman on the seventh of the magnificent seven was brad dexter and a very good character actor and whoever got that should be congratulated for being a good character i guess our pal nancy hellman back at the station came up with that thank you nancy info brad dexter is the guy who saved frank sinatra's life in that near drowning incident some years ago i feel like we should play the theme music for entertainment tonight but just in case it comes up in some trivia contest you're in and yes in that same trivia contest keith comstock did play right field and watch murphy's home fun up close and personal the one-o pitch to aussie virgin little dribbler foul account evens at one and one oz one for two with a walk and an rbi khan stock when two thirds of an inning allowed two hits walked one [Applause] no runs yet though the runners on base are his responsibility no activity in the bullpen little tap to the mound they're gonna go for two everybody it's an heir they'll have to give him an rbi he can't assume a double play and it's four to one well john perlman got a mental block here and the ball is hit in front of him and he had a play at the plate and fired it high wide and handsome to second base pulling robbie thompson off the back while the braves increased that lead to four to one but he had a play right in front of him bob brownlee to the mom telling his pitcher you gotta forgive made a mistake forget about it now you got another major league hitter up there gene gleiber goes to work in the atlanta bullpen by the way if you're keeping score that's also a fielder's choice that's very important credit virgil with an rbi on a fielder's choice there's hubbard low and away one ball no strikes tom smith our director doing a great job keeping up with all these maneuvers and glenn wind tunnel diamond is our director i mean whatever he is producing blown away brian smythe our technical director stephanie bradley in charge of and hal galima and carol a little bit inside we've been talking about grand slam home runs today well mike fitzgerald just hit one for montreal against the mets in the second inning and bryn smith now has a five-nothing lead at the end of two and a half at the knees on the outside corner he took it that's three and one acker is on deck but the braves could go to their bench ted simmons lurks over there with benedict reneki and ramirez they're loaded the bases i mean hacker will be called back and simmons will hit chuck tran to deliver the knockout blow here there's no activity in the giant bullpen [Applause] point if you like base runners and if you're a braves man you can put the two together today the braves have had nine hits they've had eight walks and there's been a giant error allowing a brave to get on base that's 18 base runners only in the seventh inning with one man out simmons the braves have had the bases loaded all night it seems now jim got gets up and begins to throw simmons has hit nine grand slams in his crate and have he had a three-run homer this year i think he had one last year yeah against cecilia guante june 3rd of 86 he's got nine in his career you are a veritable fount of grand slam information page 152 of the media guy oh okay bases loaded one up inside one ball no strikes it's 4-1 and the braves trying to put it away here that's pretty good production from mr [Applause] simmons the tag the catch the throw to the plate he will be safe but another runner to third it's five to one simmons didn't miss by much he got it off the end of the bat [Applause] but he drives in a run and it's a 5-1 ball game maybe we can see just how close ted came maybe tough on this angle it was it was near the end of the bat that was simmons reaction caught perfectly he knew that he just missed it a little bit lower a little bit on the sweet part that would have been out albert hall bats for the second time in the game he was intentionally passed his first time boy the wheels have spun here for both managers boy had a good cut trying to steer it by spillman at third base harry is primarily an outfielder first baseman so he's not 100 at home over there the hunt corner gene garber will come on to pitch for [Music] atlanta fly ball twisted fouled on the left side everybody chasing it no chance is the o2 pitch about to be made just missed one and two our graphics person hal galima in what may be his last game points out that this has not been a magnificent seventh for the giants and he is indeed right just foul passed first comstock went two-thirds of an inning allowed two runs one earned a walk in two hits the walk was intentional i got a chance to play right field for just a second paul waits pearlman's one two two balls two strikes the runners lead from first and third ground ball base hitter run is it albert hall slaps another one to left boy he's been aiming over there this hole it back virgil comes home to roost hubbard stops at second and the ninth man to bat in the inning will be ken overcrowd here's a good job of hitting the pitch is on the outside and hall doesn't try to pull it he just goes with it and strokes it between third and short kind of serves it to left field well if anybody has a time capsule working i'll donate this scoresheet especially people 200 years from now never figure this thing out especially the last two innings here's overthrow strike at the knees inside corner 6-1 brave braves have left nine and have a couple of more ducks out there now clark good play permanent gets to the back good play by will clark and a good throw and the inning is over but the braves score four on five hits one costly air and two more left we go to the eighth atlanta six san francisco one [Music] bud thunder it's revved up and coming at [Music] you [Music] so [Music] wow [Music] subscribe today to super sports news and you'll receive 12 issues plus a full color team picture and a brave history poster showing all the uniforms worn by the braves since 1900s and 11.95 for the next 12 issues to super sports news post office box 89162 atlanta georgia 303 one two all the uniforms worn by the braves i want to see the one pepe frios for [Music] we're going to the 8th inning brinley thompson and williams will be the first three gene garber on the pitch hacker did his job here winner inning allowed a hit struck outlet it has been a peculiar ball game [Music] brimley has bounced to third and homer through all this the giants have but two hits brinley against garber they have had some memorable duels down through the years gino pitches with a five-run lead well you gotta give chuck tanner some credit tonight too every move he has made is to this point worked out straight going on bounced foul over by the giants dugout quickly geno's up and out in front of and soon [Music] ground ball to third obrechtvel digs it out and throws one up robbie thompson is the better the youngster out of west palm beach if the braves hang on here they will have won four of the nine games played between these two teams to this point down and in one ball no strengths montreal five nothing over the mids that's now after three and a half strike robinson against ryan cincinnati in the astrodome to play houston tonight pittsburgh at st louis that hasn't started yet the padres won again today they beat the dodgers 8-7 john shelby had two home runs and a losing cause i'd like to add my congratulations and so a skip to scott and vicki carson of kansas city missouri who are newlyweds but are good enough to watch the game tonight fouled away at the plate it's one and two american league detroit hung on beat toronto three two frank banana got the win blue whitaker and matt and oaks at homer milwaukee beat minnesota 8-5 seattle shut out chicago two-nothing bank here to nunez combined on the shutout two and two of the count here to robbie thompson tonight boston and cleveland scoreless after one baltimore new york scoreless after one and a half the other action later on that's gonna fall in front of hall basic so thompson is a board with one out and hear his friends and family cheering down below matt williams is due but it looks like joel youngblood is let's see yeah that's who it is youngblood you see his stats on the ear he's been with the giants a while now spent some time with the mets in montreal as well he's been around this game for a long time pop filed back and out of play nothing at once ivan dejesus limbers up in the bullpen he'll come in to play shortstop youngblood started with cincinnati then back in 76. then with the cardinals the mets montreal and the giants little tap garber has it goes to first to out thompson moves to second and here's harry spillman with a runner in scoring position and two out after dejesus enters this game the giants will be down to candy maldonado and bob melvin use as pin should they need them in the ninth you can see spillman has done a fine job for the giants that's gonna be out of play don't forget cincinnati comes in here tomorrow night david palmer and guy hoffman it's a 7 40 games as is friday's contest saturday no tv but game time 120 and a 210 tilt on sunday pete and i will have saturday's game on graves radio john will be here to do his star of the game show john will be poolside taking notes bouncing balls should be out of the inning hubbard digs it out the garber does his thing we go to the bottom half of the eighth inning with your score atlantis six san francisco won [Music] bye-bye big a big brother taught me responsibility checks into the game to play shortstop he'll bet in the eighth spot on the order and gerald perry will lead off the atlanta eighth inning braves enjoy a five-run lead and can even their record at 32 and 32 as they await the reds who will arrive late tonight from houston at the knees a ball on a strike well hit center field back goes milner he's at the wall nice catch one up milner took at least a double away from gerald perry with a super play well there's one thing eddie milner can do he can run down fly balls with any outfielder in the game and he's a good example he can go get him with the best of them here's the murph he's been perfect two for two with two walks one of those hits a home run strike call the braves with this victory if they get it will not only move to the 500 mark they will move to within three games of the lead in the national league west pending the outcome of the cincinnati houston game pop foul back and out of play more importantly they will move to within a game of the third place giants and they would move to within or would move three games in front of the dangers who are in fifth place yeah and the three games out is pretty legitimate too because they're only three back of the loss column to cincinnati look out it hit it and murphy's slings the band away in disgust pearlman's sidearms and the ball tails right into murphy he had no chance to get out of the way at least the ball was down so he could take it in the back that's the most dangerous pitch if it's up because if it's up around the head you can't get out of it back you kind of by natural instincts back into the pitch got him right in the small of the back he's flexing it down there at first base hope it doesn't stiffen up for tomorrow's action hot shot thompson gloves a good play second one first safe here's andres thomas took him just a little time to unload the ball as he had to move to his left and that cost him a double play on a bang bang play at first thomas is over two with a second one for three with a walk as well he has scored a run ozzy virgil moves on deck he has a couple of rbis to his credit tonight breaking ball outside last year virgil had 15 homers 48 rbi as he is barring injuries in those marks 68 rbis is major league high with the philly meanwhile steve bedrozzian has been paying huge dividends for philadelphia in that deal and milt thompson is helping them as well so everybody i guess is happy two balls and a strike six one atlanta bottom of the eight in the ninth the giants will send milner clark and a pinch hitter for the pitcher to the play ground ball to short pass to jesus into left center griffey's gonna try for third he's gonna make it so thomas is at first griffey at third and virgil about the it says you see broke a step towards second base on that ball i guess he lost it and it went right over his glove that's a very makeable play but he could not make it and runners are first and third and the braves trying to add a little icing to the cake virgil looks at russ nixon who's got no signs for him now earlier dale murphy hit his 20th home run of the year last year he didn't hit number 20 until august 11th the pitch a little low one ball no shrinks glenn hubbard would be next bounced foul it's even in a ball in the strike david palmer and guy hoffman the pitchers tomorrow night 7 35 tv time 7 40 game time if you're in the atlanta area we hope you'll join us alright upstairs with a breaking ball pearlman is laboring while roger craig tried something tonight and it backfired on him or at least it didn't work i don't know the backfired when he put the pitcher in right field brought the right-hander bacchus in and murphy hit the home run then the left-hander came back and gave up two hits but at least he had the guts to try it a mile high but straight up the chute will clark is going to call for it and foul territory and the inning is over the braves folks have left 13 runners in this game that's the bad news the good news is their lead 6-1 in the flamboyant world of rock and roll robert palmer stands out as the epitome of sophisticated european style his hallmark is the streamlined italian food paired with a tapered shirt and tie palmer has a keen sense of color and a talent for combining we go to the ninth inning the top of the order up there milner clark and aldrete rather not already he's long gone from this game that was in that picture to the outfield switch milner looks at a strike he's over three giants have about three hits in the game braves have pounded out 11. it's been a very peculiar ball game little swinging bunt back to the mound and there's the first one in the night giants figure to be 33 and 31 when this is over and the braves 32 and 32. and you have to be encouraged by the pitching of rick mailer tonight his second good outing in a row after really struggling for about six weeks see if clark swings at the first pitch this time he almost always does boy he's a good looking young hitter whoops told you downstairs one ball no strength two balls no strike you saw garber start his motion and then sort of stumble and stop that's the 33rd time this year that he has done that two miles in a strength we stop at nothing in our efforts to keep you fully informed meanwhile davey johnson is back to the antacid tablets in the fourth montreal leads the mets nine nothing [Music] two and two the count to clark he fought it out but still two and two bill fahey the first base coach makes the play former padre catcher two and two is the count here the two two pitch hey run it full three and two and he walked in not a thing garber would have preferred to do with a five-run lead and jeffrey leonard is the better he is sitting in the number three spot in the order he came into the game for pitcher keith comstock i think now he came in he came in when comstock left the second time left the mound the second time started to go held up inside one ball no strikes obama strike runner at first went up the magnificent seven are warming up in the bullpen and we'll be with you as soon as leonard hits into a six four three six four three oh well win win win braves win it 6-1 totals and highlights after this
