hello shed fans normally our videos are scripted structured board game reviews today is not that today is about something a bit more wholesome a bit more healing today i'm going to get rid of half of my board games probably the question that you're asking yourselves right now is why and the answer is actually pretty simple i am not a collector i don't like to keep things around especially if i don't enjoy them very much and since my job is being a board game reviewer a i get a lot of board games sent to me and b i don't always enjoy them in fact most of the time i don't enjoy them i tend to keep around only the games that i really like but since the pandemic started we've been very busy and i haven't had as much time to curate my collection and i sort of let it go as a consequence of which of course there are now too many board games in fact um we have an entire room that is dedicated just to board games it's not a very big room but it does sit two calyxes one a five by five and one a four by four and now they are not only full but there's board games everywhere around the house in any room you go into there's bound to be one board game or another and of course there is a total of 236 board games in this entire house which is too much so i decided what i'm going to do is in one fell swoop get rid of half of them which is a hundred and eighteen board games another question you might be asking yourselves is efka what do you do with the board games to get rid of and that's a really good question i don't like being wasteful just because i have board games sent to me for free i like to make sure that i repurpose them correctly so first of all any review copies that we ever get sent we don't resell because that wouldn't be ethical and also any board games i get rid of i'd like to make sure that i get rid of them locally if that makes sense meaning i don't post them anywhere which is more environmentally friendly but also i know that the local board gaming community will benefit from that and that's very important to me so when we used to live in harpenden i used to donate my review copies to a local board game club where we would raffle them off i don't live there anymore and since i moved to nottingham the pandemic started so i haven't found a local club but i do know of a board game cafe called the dice cup which is where i have been periodically donating my review copies and i have messaged them and asked them would you take on half of my collection and they have agreed to do so so that's good uh this isn't a surprise to them they they are not like watching this video and going oh my god we have to take 118 board games well yes you do but also you already know about that so don't worry about it there are some that i'm not going to be donating to the dice cup because that wouldn't just make sense 18xx games i don't think are games that a boardgame cafe can take advantage of and i'll be sending them to my friends who play 18xx games um and also there's one instance of arkham horror the living card game which i have bought for a lot of money uh because it was a big collection and i have since increased that collection and this is by the way if you haven't listened to our podcast also just to let you know um the word that there isn't going to be the arkham horror lcg part 2 video uh if you want to know more about that there's a link to the podcast where we discuss that in the description and you can find out why but i am getting rid of that but i am going to sell that because that that that is a lot of money that's way too much money so i'm not donating that but everything else is just going to the dice cup and that's that finally some rules this is not exactly 236 board games that i own in fact what i did is i counted the number of boxes i owned and i had to make some weird maps there for example all of key forge counts as just one box because if you start counting each booster pack individually then it becomes um very unfair to the other games and some games like too many bones or the arkham horror collection which take up an entire calyx cubby i'm counting them each as four games because an average of a calyx shelf is four games just so each of those count as four but on average there's still about 236 board games and there's one final rule when i'm done the 118 board games that i'm getting rid of uh when i'm done with that i will be able to choose five and i'm going to have to give a very good reason for it but five of those after i've made that decision i will be able to take back and put them back on my shelves now the reason for that is that hindsight is 20 20. um and sometimes you go no i don't want that and then you just change your mind and i think this isn't about punishing myself this is more about coming to terms that some things just have to go and i want to say a few things about why i'm doing this as a video because i think a lot of us can get into that collector mindset and start thinking oh this game i love this game uh you know i'm i'm gonna play it one day or i i will be showing this game to people you know because it's it's a great game to and you never do and you never do so i i wanna let's inspire people to just you know get rid of the board games but more uh learn to love the ball games that you really really love this is a fruitful exercise and i'm not saying that you should do this at home because i am filming this actually after i've already done it and i can say that it ended very painfully uh but but because some parts of that can be quite healing and wholesome so so without further ado this this this is me getting rid of 118 board games uh let's let's start getting rid of these games okay well roll visit first one i can't get rid of this this okay we can't get rid of this this this all that somewhere really easy to get rid of they are just second editions of games we already have i have the crew and the crew deep sea adventure or whatever it's called and the second one is just much better and pretty much the same game so getting rid of that was easy great western trail first edition second edition sure great western trail second edition doesn't have the expansion but that's fine that expansion will come along and i enjoy the new artwork and new production a lot more uh and a little balanced tweaks that i started to feel now so yeah that was just you know out gone 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 30. so far so far and our target is hundred and eighteen it's also incredible how the pandemic affected my perception on what games i want to keep and what games i don't captain sonar is the game i thought i i love for a long time specifically because it does something that other games don't you know four versus four real time battle you know submarine that's amazing right and it's a popular convention game uh but just know a lot of eight people getting together going around right now and i feel like there's not gonna be a lot of eight people getting together for a while going forward at least not in my life i'm not rushing anywhere you know in terms of big gatherings so i i just had to let those go and it was actually fairly easy to let them go and one thing that i've realized was that you know what by the time this is all done there's probably going to be new things at those high play accounts that are really lively raucous games that i'll be able to enjoy and most of the time something like captain sauna you can only play at a convention and the convention probably already has a copy somewhere floating about so yeah that that went and i kind of feel sad about it now but but it's gone we're getting there i don't want to get rid of inish i'm happy to get rid of this yeah okay thirty-one 32. one thing that immediately struck me was that i had 10 18 xx games and i'm not saying there's anything wrong with having 10 18 xx games but for me personally i think 10 is too much so i gotten rid of some of them and i've gotten rid of the ones i've already played because i think the joy of 18xx is tinkering with the same system so i only kept the ones that i haven't played which means a lot of the intro ones are now just gone they're they're completely gone and they're not there anymore do we need both results no no 38 38. but as i was doing it i've noticed that a lot of it became very easy from the beginning like there were games that i thought i wanted to keep like root or pax premiere but when it came to me just taking them off the shelf i did it immediately and i realized i know some people are going to be upset by this especially when they're going to see what games are left and what games i've gotten rid of um but taking some of them off was just like taking a weight off my shoulders i was like no i realized i actually didn't want to have this game and a lot of it was also really easy to get rid of because they were just sort of hanging on and i just went yeah okay i don't want that or i don't need that and that was the start of it so it started really really well um i was like just taking games off and going no i don't need this i don't need that i don't need this i don't need that and they were just going right and then when there were about 36 of them left i think i hit a pretty hard wall this is getting harder the shelf is really good there's just a lot of things i like here not much i want to get rid of i i am genuinely drawn i don't know what to do it's important to know that some of the games we are keeping we are keeping purely because uh they are for work they are review copies or games we bought that looked interesting and then we haven't yet gotten around to trying them out and there's quite a few of those and you might be going like why you why are you keeping monumental for example over agricola surely agricola is a better game than monumental and the answer is i don't know i haven't tried monumental yet so part of my job is to try different board games not part of my job like a really big element of my job is to try new things and compare them to the wealth of knowledge i've accumulated and then increase that wealth of knowledge so i i just no matter how good some games are they're not going to stick around when i feel like i'm done with them i am done with them they they are gone and um so so that was pretty easy some of these were really really easy and if you're upset that i am getting rid of them and you're upset that i'm keeping some of them well you can't be because i'm not allowing you because i'm not allowing myself to be upset by it we got this for our wedding remember yeah and did we get rid of a wedding present no no okay we can't get rid of a wedding present or can we it's worth noting that this isn't just my collection this is also ellen's collection and we sort of did this together so we made decisions together a lot of the time we're pretty much in sync on this but there were quite a few times when i picked up a game and then went no thing is we don't know with that race for the galaxy if that's the only thing keeping us married you see i'll take the chance but when we hit that that last 35 that's when things became very very difficult and i had to start make concessions um so one painful concession was getting rid of race for the galaxy which is an old battered up copy with the first free expansions in it and i didn't want to get rid of it because not only was it a wedding present to me and elaine from our friends but also because it's i think the first modern board game that we had not played but had and that made it very special but i realized that i just i just don't play race for the galaxy and it's weird to keep hanging on to it so that went uh 1775 rebellion uh we have for sentimental reasons even though we just don't play it anymore but it's the first board game we have ever reviewed that's also gone um and then there were games that elaine was hanging on to for sentimental reasons like mastermind or this old beat up copy of a roll and move alice in wonderland game and i was sure those games were going to stay because of how much sentimental value elaine has with them and she also made the sacrifice when the numbers started going really slow and we started looking at all these board games that were kind of amazing um that's when lane made sacrifices and said no you know what they can go there's not a lot of board games left today i will be honest with you there are not a lot of board games left let's play through the unlock really quickly and then we can get rid of no that's not how this works that's not how this works that's the whole thing about this not working that way um just has to be ruthless there's nothing left not this why why do i have to get rid of 20 more board games there are there's nothing left we can get rid of the uh used copy of king's dilemma to keep the unused ones what are we going to do is it though so what's that that makes it 23 23 22 legacy games which are nearly finished or have been started but are not going to be finished they are going to be have to be recycled those weren't words but you understood what i meant uh it's just very unfortunate but sometimes there's just there's just no out i guess there's a downside to legacy games you you cannot replay them meaning they become waste when you're done which is i think something we're all being a little bit more aware of right now what about guy project when are we gonna play it again whenever there's a person over i can't i can't either watergate or target we i've gotten rid of almost everything i own i feel like i've not got anything left yeah i know do you really want to keep both brasses yeah all right yeah i kind of do okay watergate oh wow wow with the upgraded bits making sacrifices afgha one more game one more game no goodbye capitalism strangely when i got to the last game when there was just one left to get rid of that became very easy the penultimate one was really difficult that was watergate i did not want to get rid of watergate at all um but then when it came to the last one uh i just picked up camber and ev and went right now that's going and we're done and it was so easy because i was like no this makes sense looking looking at what i've gotten rid of and looking at um just the the empty space i was like oh cool okay of course it's that one right and i guess as a conclusion i want to say that you shouldn't do this because this was pretty drastic and pretty harsh but maybe consider taking out 25 of your board games or 33 of your board games and donating them either to a charity shop or a local board game cafe or a local board game group and that might feel really good you might feel like you've refreshed yourself you've gotten rid of quite a few things that were hanging on your chest and introduced a bit of freedom into your life it's a good feeling it really really feels very nice and i'm really glad i did this but finally you might be wondering what does 118 board games look like the answer is like this and i'm doing the shot with voiceover and b-roll because we tried fitting all the board games onto our table and we managed to fit only about two-thirds of it and then the camera only took in half it wasn't good so this is this is just voice-over these are all the games i am getting rid of they're going to the dice cup and then after that i i won't have them anymore which feels weird feels uh like a relief but also i'm kind of like i'm not sure i want to let some of these go that's why i am keeping five of them and you will find out what they are after a word from our sponsors this video is sponsored by skillshare the going to feel like a mistake because what if i'm keeping the wrong ones what if i don't actually like this but i think i've come up with good reasons as to why i'm keeping them if you want to find out the total list of the games i'm getting rid of that's in the description by the way so you can just go have a look and share your thoughts in the comments about what horrible mistakes i have made um without further ado the first one um that i am actually keeping in the end is castles of burgundy because i don't know what i was thinking and then said what are you thinking and i said why yes castle i can play it on the app but actually it's a joy to play with other people can't play with other people on the app i mean you can in multiplayer but then everyone has to have a copy this is this is that game but but you know everyone can play it so castles of burgundy great game this is the 20th anniversary edition it's definitely staying i've never played democrat and i've only heard amazing things about it this is a classic game this this version will not be reprinted because there was a single print of it and that's it and if i get rid of it which by the way i got just before the pandemic and haven't had a chance to play it yet because of the pandemic uh and if i play at some point in the future and go oh my god i actually love this i'm gonna feel like i've made the worst mistake by getting rid of it so i'm gonna keep it until i find out whether i actually like it or not so dear marker staying okay i mentioned i don't like to be wasteful and this is part of that this has been opened and we we've started playing it and sort of gone off it uh but i'm gonna finish it so so we're not gonna waste this legacy game uh this we have opened but we haven't played it but in the same vein like donating it to a boarding and cafe doesn't make sense because how do they play a legacy game in the board game cafe i i just don't want it to you know be recycled without a purpose so these i'm keeping i'm going to play through them after the pandemics happened and finished well no we can just play it just a two player game pandemic game in the pandemic it's so meta okay well there you go after the pandemic is finished this actually feels like a mistake because i've played it and i know i don't like it or at least i don't like parts about it some of it i like but it's the parts that i do like are very interesting and compelling and i want to mess around with it a little more i am probably going to end up getting rid of it on a final note i'd like to say that some of the games that we are getting rid of about four i think in total are review copies that have been sent to us and we have not covered it in any way if you're the publisher or designer of one of those games all i can say is i'm very sorry the reason we're not covering them is because we play them and we didn't like them at all or the pandemic prevented us from playing them because of player count this feels fine this is entirely fine i i don't want to end this video because if i end this video that means that's it i i have to i have to say goodbye to all of these games so goodbye
