Prince Albert of saxe-coburg and Gotha was husband to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland the prince would probably have worn drawers of silk or wool stockinette the shirt was still very traditional in cut with a squared off hem the trousers were tight and slim fitting they had a button fly front and were high-waisted they were kept in place by embroidered straps known as braces or more fully a brace to sustain drawers and trousers the shirt had a pleated yoke at the front and buttoned closed collars might be attached or may have been a separate item but were worn high and upstanding shoes lace-up ankle boots and knee length riding boots were all worn depending on the occasion in 1847 Rudolf flowline became the Prince Albert's second valet they had been friends since childhood he was one of a number of valets amongst the Prince of staff cuffs might be closed with pearl buttons or cufflinks [Music] the waistcoat finished just below the waist it was usually a contrasting color and fabric and often quite decorative a single breasted waistcoat was usual for evening wear a fob watch could be carried in the left waistcoat pocket with a chain link through the buttonhole a white silk cravat was worn in the evening the cravat was long and wrapped around the throat tying off in a soft bow at the front the blue sash represents the Order of the Garter it is the most senior order of knighthood and was the first honor that Queen Victoria granted Prince Albert the tail coat which had fronts cut away to waist level was worn for formal day wear and his evening dress it had long lapels and was not intended to fasten across the front but was cut back to reveal much of the waistcoat the insignia on the tail coat also represents the order and is decorated with the Red Cross of st.
