all right guys today we're going to talk about the proper throwing motion on the serve you might have noticed that it's not an exact throwing motion when you watch someone like roger federer serve he doesn't look like he's throwing the tennis ball over the net but to me it is a throwing motion we're going to talk about what kind of throwing motion it is and how you guys can do it to get that effective and efficient service motion that kinetic chain and ultimately get that easy power so most of the time when i'm working with people whether that's on court or online i'm trying to improve their serve i'm trying to fix something that they're doing i'm not looking at someone i'm being like wow you're doing it perfect let's see if we can get five percent extra power from somewhere that's usually not what i'm doing day to day so what i find myself doing you know whether i'm with a beginner or someone that's you know advanced i'm just trying to improve their kinetic chain and get their throwing motion a little bit more refined now i i do this as i said in the last video with jeff selzenstein that's a great video by the way if you if you haven't seen it already go check that out i'll leave the link in the description but even before i change grips to the continental i'm trying to get that throwing motion going you know get that throw motion and then you can start to add things on top of that now as i'm trying to fix players serves and they're doing all kinds of things they're throwing it up here they're hooking it around them there's a thousand things that people can do wrong so what i'm trying to get them to do most of time is just treat it like a throwing motion it's where the arm bends here i can often see that racket this side of the head and they're throwing the elbow down court so this is kind of the standard throwing motion that i'm trying to get people to do and when i do this especially the lower level you are the more that elbow is coming forwards here just like if we're throwing now as i said in reality or not not in reality but if you watch a good server they don't look like the throw in the racket down the court it's a very different motion that elbow is getting thrown up a little bit now i've seen a lot of funky serves because of the idea of the elbow being thrown up there was a guy who was telling me that he'd watched a video and i don't know who made this video i've never seen the video but that you're trying to throw your racket out of a well now we're trying to get the ball to go this way right we're trying to get it to go down the court with some speed so i don't like all this throwing up and also this throwing forwards is good to develop the swing but in reality we do want that elbow to go up a little bit so what i want you guys to think about is this elbow getting thrown up at a 45 degree angle so when you're back here and your elbow is sort of in line with your shoulders see if you can throw that elbow up at a 45 degree angle right that's the magic angle you're trying to throw at you're not trying to go up here and hook it around your head and over your body and you're not trying to throw it this way because we are trying to go up to get the ball right so if you watch this i'm going to be trying to throw my elbow up at a 45 degree angle this sun is killing me so if you guys watch a great server you'll see that their elbow is here and it's going to go up 45 degrees to the contact point if you draw a line from the trophy position to contact point it's quite often a 45 degree angle however it does sort of arc around a little bit to get there it goes up and then to the contact point but you have this beautiful saiyan golf that i love and i use all the time feel verse reel i want the feel to be that you're just taking that elbow and you're going straight up with it that's going to stop all the funky stuff of that elbow getting thrown up and and all the energy going that way when we want it to really go that way and it's also going to stop the the throw motion of your arm just coming forwards here so we're trying to get into this trophy position and throw our elbow up at a 45 degree angle straight there into the contact point the elbow up right every every pro is going to lead with the elbow to some degree do you feel like you're loose with that as well to throw the elbow at the ball so i don't personally think about the elbow going up to the ball because i do it naturally but i definitely feel like if i'm helping a player first of all just getting to this position where the elbow is in this i call it the slot like if you're going to throw 99 of people don't get here so it's pretty tough that if you're if you're down here how the heck are you going to throw your elbow in the ball and if you're up here you can't really throw i i have tightness in my shoulder so for me i feel like it's important to try to help someone just feel what it's like to be here because if they're here then this part can happen if we can't get this part it's pretty tough my issue with a lot of people is we want the ball to go this way but we're not getting anything really going there because like you say your elbow's here but it's just going straight up this way i mean we're trying to go that way so for you when you're here yep you're throwing up but it's also coming you know you you're sending more energy this way from this high elbow position yeah from being a little bit more rotated yep so you're getting it going a little bit and i i for me i feel the energy going forward but i feel it going like up and forward almost like at a 45 degree angle i that'll be good everyone's gonna see how much slower i serve than you i don't know about that just one more thing if you go to the description below there's a link to tpa tennis dot com slash kik and i've put together a 20 minute video on how to master the kick serve so go check that out it's free and i think it'll really improve your serve you
