German World War two super weapons people can't get enough for them the History Channel certainly could him back in the early 2000s throughout World War two Germany built some of the biggest weapon systems that the world has ever seen for goto examples are the schwa Gustav and its sister gun fedora they were and still are the biggest railway guns that were ever built weigh at over 1,400 tons they could fire seven ton shelves up to 40 kilometres away at a rate of one round every 40 minutes it's almost like a work of science-fiction the sheer scale of the gun is mind-boggling one of the guns saw its first and only combat in the siege of sevastopol its biggest accomplishment during the siege was when it blew up an undersea ammo dump her ammunition done was 30 meters under the black sea with 10 metres of concrete protection other massive German constructions include the massive submarine pens which could even take direct hits from some of the biggest bombs that England kumusta another weapon system is de la cupola a v2 rocket base in France its goal was to streamline the amount of time needed between v2 rocket launchers we're gonna be focusing on a mega weapon that wasn't built this weapons development would have been more daunting to engineers and the other three projects that I just mentioned I'm talking about the land cruiser p1000 Vata originally purposed by the director of crop in 1942 it would be a tank that would symbolize the power of German engineering it would be so big that it would be in a new class a tank but German army had several tank designations there were like tanks like the Panzer wanted to medium tanks such as the Panzer 3 4 and 5 the Panzer 5 being better known as the Panther heavy tanks like the Panzer 6 which referred to the tiger and the king tiger or in German Koenig Stiga and now we get to the heaviest class a tank actually produce super-heavy tank only one actual super-heavy tank design was made this was the Panzer 8 or better known as mouse the mouse weighed 180 tons and sported a turret with a 128 millimeter gun two Mouse tanks were made but never got out of the testing phase there are rumors that a mouse was used in the defense of a testing was based at there's no evidence to back up the claims of it though but Panzer 1000 butter would be classed as a land cruiser most likely due to the fact that it looks like a ship that is taken to the land the p1000 was first proposed to Hitler in June 1942 the idea was for a tank to be armed with naval ship guns but land cruiser would also be heavily armored to stop any tank or artillery from being able to damage it designed drawings were organized and shown to Hitler later that year in December 1942 Hitler was ecstatic with the new designs of his super-heavy tank and thus christened it burrata a specification of the Vata had the frontal armor 250 millimeters thick sloped areas of the frontal armor would increase its effective thickness to over 300 to even 350 millimeters depending on the angle of the armor the main armament on the Ratto would have been a modified warship gun turret the original design of the turret was used in the German capital ship Ginoza now the design had freed 280 millimeter guns in one turret Vitara on the rato would have removed the middle gun in the triple turret using data from the version of this gun that was made and used on the battleship shows us how the same gun mounted on the VAT Oh would have performed armor-piercing rounds weighing 300 kilograms would have a maximum range of just under thirty six and a half kilometers for the guns to shoot to their maximum range they will need to be elevated up to their maximum height of 40 degrees one interesting thing is that the gun turret used on the batter may have been one of the exact same toy it's used on the gun Iser now in early 1942 Bergen Eisenhower was badly damaged in a port struck by British bombers for ship underwent a lengthy repair process which was changed into an upgrade for the old ship the old 28 centimeter guns and 15 centimeter turrets would be refitted with larger guns up to 38 centimeters hitler cancelled the upgrade in december 1942 the ship was disarmed and it's 15 centimeters and 28 centimeter guns were then mounted into coastal batteries hitler was showing the ratter plans in december 1942 so it's quite possible that one of the turrets from the ship may have been mounted onto devata as it would cut down on the production whilst for twin gun Tara is the main feature of this tank that's not whether arnhem installs there are disputes about where an additional 120 8 millimeter gun would have been placed some sources say that it will be mounted facing forward in the hole in a similar way to the French RB or the American M freely other thoughts are that there would have been to 128 millimeter guns and each one will be in their own turrets at either side at the rear of the engine deck there's also a third theory that the 128 millimeter gun would be mounted in the main turret it would have been mounted in the middle between the two guns this theory isn't as likely as the first two theories additional smaller caliber weapons will be used to defend the vehicle from air and infantry attack multiple 20 millimeter gun positions will be scattered about the Vata some of them caught mounts for anti-aircraft guns would be on the rear engine deck and possibly two of the 20 millimeter guns will be mounted on top of the main turret itself too heavy machine guns in ball mounts would be utilized for close infantry defense their location may have been either on the front or one on each side of the latter virata's whole length would be 35 metres long and 14 metres wide it would be standing tall at 11 metres all the way to the top of the turret total crew inside would be variable depending on the internal layout it is fought that the crew may be anywhere between 20 men at least minimum to maybe around 40 the crew count could possibly be higher though inside Virata there were plans to have a vehicle storage bay for motorcycles and infirmary and also several assorted storage rooms with the weight of all the armor men guns and ammunition the rutter would weigh along during the design phase it was estimated that the Vata would weigh 1,000 tonnes theoretically the Rutter was plans to be able to achieve 44 km/h but me personally I don't think it would have been possible for it to achieve those speeds yes the power plan was huge if Parvati would have been using twin submarine engines that together could produce 13,000 kilowatts which is around 17,000 horsepower very impressive engine power especially when he compared to my car which has 60 horsepower what I find interesting is that even though it sounds impossible the power-to-weight ratio does actually check out it should've very be possible for the VAT to achieve over 40 km/h let's compare the power-to-weight ratio with a tiger tank the tiger tank could produce 515 kilowatts to move 54 tons of weight giving us 9.5 kilowatts per tonne for a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour for a could produce 13,000 kilowatts to move 1,000 tonnes this gives us 13 kilowatts per tonne giving us a maximum speed of 44 kilometers per hour so yes in theory the Ratish should be able to achieve over 40 kilometers per hour but this figure doesn't take into account a multitude of factors such as friction from the track and even if the suspension could handle high speeds it also doesn't take into account the Rutter's actual way the weight was meant to be 1,000 tonnes but the tower already weighed 600 tonnes when it was mounted on the ship the mouse when it was being planned was originally going to weigh 100 tonnes it ended up weighing 188 tons the 1000 ton number is most likely because Hitler seemed very fond of that big number Hitler liked big grand showpieces for example he greenlit the 1,000 times 1000 times 1000 bomber project which resulted in fokker wolf producing the 1000 times 1000 times 1000 plane the project was for plane to be able to carry a bomb that weighed 1000 kilograms for a distance of 1000 kilometers at a speed of 1,000 kilometers per hour so yes but estimated weight of the batter would most certainly be more than 1000 tonnes theoretically completely making unlikely to be often reaches estimated speed of 44 km/h with its low speed the ratah would have had difficulties getting to the frontlines in any theater of war no bridge in Europe would have been able to support its weight transport by rail would have been out of the question breaking down the batter for transportation by rail would take far too much time and effort for the mammoth task of reassembling it back together again a positive thing about the Vasa is that it had two meters of ground clearance so offroading shouldn't have been too much of an issue unless if they hit a boggy area how would recovery of such a vehicle even take place for weight of the rat earth was spread over six tracks three on each side Hank each track was 1.2 meters wide giving a combined track whip for 7.2 meters between all six tracks Bharata is not the first multi-tracked tank before the end of the war America had produced 40:28 which has four tracks there's also the Russian tank object 279 which also has four tracks but that was produced postwar bharata would be the first tank in history to have six tracks bharata would have just been a massively impractical weapon it may have been easier to use Verwey guns like the k5 which could be transported on standard train networks throughout europe it's even the same caliber gun at 28 centimeters the k5 could lob 250 kilograms shelves up to 65 kilometers away even the Karl Sieg mortars are more mobile than the Vata with a 60 centimeter bow they can lob two-ton shelves up to 42 kilometers away four cows could even be transported by rail although admittedly they didn't need to be broken down a little bit and then reassembled on the other side both of these heavy weapons are massively complicated but in comparison to the batter there are merely a fraction of what it would have cost to build the batter if the router was the furrow track the mechanics in charge of the budget will most likely enter a suicide pact of each other instead of trying to fix the issue multitrack tanks are notoriously difficult to maintain the object 279 and t28 were never mass-produced at least those tanks are lighter in comparison to this and could be easily recovered and taken to a maintenance workshop for repair how would you recover the batter and possibly all 2,000 tons of it another massive weakness of the batter would be its vulnerability to air attacks while it would have been armed with eight anti-aircraft guns these guns could only weighed off planes that were relatively close with the Rattus size how to chew bombing would have been a viable option and there's no defense for that kind of attack well there is one defense and that's having air superiority if he didn't have air superiority there was no way to guarantee the Rattus safety the Luftwaffe was not doing so well 1942 onwards any further development and research of the battle was stopped by Germany's Ministry of arms Albert Speer in early 1943 he called it a waste of resources which it most certainly was even if it does look awesome the pros of this tank are massively outweighed by the very very long list of cons the p1000 wasn't the only land cruiser Germany was considering building there was a second proposed land cruiser design but P 1,500 monster the monster was a way to make the schwerer gustav 800 millimeter gun mobile the monster would have been even bigger than the batter with even more engineering challenges behind it it has been estimated to weigh 1,500 tons but again that's another optimistic number as the schwa Gustav weighed 1400 tons the design of the monster had the 800 millimeter gun fixed facing forward to aim the monster would turn its hull in the direction it was surefire the total length of the monster will be 125 meters with a width of 18 Pavarti scan elevated the height of the monster will be 12 meters the monster would have had a minimum crew of at least 100 people and even that numbers optimistic this figure is neglecting also the amount of support staff needed so the estimated crew number will be substantially higher while there would be armor on the monster it wouldn't be protecting the crew Manning the 800 millimeter gun while it was fort that the armor will be 250 millimeters thick my guess is is that it is structural for the weight of the gun violent for the protection of the vehicle Vermont's tow would have been used in the same way that the schwerer gustav was which is in an artillery support role rather than a direct fire wall this is different from the batter which was viewed more as a mobile HQ assisting in the Panzer divisions for breakfast what is kind of odd is that this two secondary weapons mounted onto the monster - 15 centimeter howitzers kind of unnecessary and pointless next to the massive 80 centimeter gun that could fire seven time shells no actual designs of the monster survived the war so no one is exactly quite sure what it would have looked like there are two main schools of four or what the monster would have looked like design one is a motorized gun platform similar to a self-propelled artillery piece the gun is fixed forward to aim the hole would have to rotate to face what it wished to attack four trucks would have a similar setup to devata six in total for you on each side the second design would have had the gun suspended between two motorized tracked carriages very similar in design to the theoretical mobile very gun design the design I'm referring to is a plan to mount the 28 centimeter k5 railway gun onto two tiger jassi's allowing it to be independent from tracks my guess is is that if the monster was to be built design one would have been chosen over design two as it is much more straightforward Hitler personally gave the monster the green light for development only to have it again cancelled by Albert Speer in 1943 if the Rotter was a waste of time the monster would have been a humongous waste of time with Germany losing a multiple funds there had to be a shift in strategy employed against Germany's numerous enemies no more that the German army had the luxury of seeing their enemy strongpoints unlike Sevastopol but German army couldn't hang about waiting to accumulate large amounts of artillery to flatten the enemy strongholds but war was going mobile and not in the old 1940s blitzkrieg Soloway the Russian army was moving relentlessly over a massive frontier reclaiming their lost territory Germany needed weapons that could be transported quickly to an advancing enemy position and to plug in gaps and break for attempts in the front lines for slow lumbering P 1500 could theoretically do 15 kilometres per hour but power plant would have been for submarine ages producing 1600 kilowatts of power I'm not even gonna bother to calculate the kilowatt per ton because there's no surviving designs of what the monster would have looked like one issue with the 80 centimeter gun was the massive amount of recoil from the blast when firing its massive shells when it was mounted on its jewel railway configuration it had the freedom to use this weight as a recoil dampener but opposite reaction of the blast was turned into friction between the wheels and the tracks as the gun assembly rolled backwards there were also four massive recoil dampeners to reduce the guns kickback if a sure Gustav was to fire on unreinforced tracks it was splintered them due to the massive forces behind the shell for track under the Gustav had additional bracing here's a good photo showing the brace on the gun if you were to man that 80 centimeter gun into a vehicle the suspension will need to be fixed before firing the monster would most likely also have additional braces around the upper area near the gun and the braces would assist in this person the guns recoil into the ground around the vehicle let's play around with the theory that Germany actually went ahead to build one of each of the batter and the monster crop would have been the manufacturers of the batter and Monster they were the powerhouse of German production throughout the war purely on steel alone the amount needed to be pulled from other production lines would have been insane Germany had to import most of its metal throughout world war ii when the war took a turn for the worst the quality and quantity of the imported resources decreased the amount of steel needed for vato would be close to that needed of a ship a tiger h1 weighs around 53 tons not all of it is steel but just bear with me here for 1,000 tonnes nineteen Tiger tanks could have been made or if tanks are not your jam you could have had 135 88 millimeter anti-aircraft guns if you don't want AAA guns how about 200 of the German mass produced jet the me-262 there's a lot more to production than just having available resources but what I'm trying to show is the magnitude that these resources would across the German war machine construction of either of these two land cruisers would have taken around 12 months that's just for construction planning the vehicle would take development time possibly around 3 months but that's an optimistic time schedule the estimated completion date would be around mid 1944 also somehow the factory manufacturing the batter and monster somehow escaped all Allied bombing over the last year in a bit now that I wonder weapons are ready we need to get them to the frontlines when both vehicles becoming operational it will be just before around d-day so they would have most likely been transferred to the Eastern Front to help achieve a breakthrough it would have been unlikely for the Land Cruisers to be used on the Italian front due to the mountainous nature of the region there may have seen use during the Warsaw Uprising which happened just a month after our land cruisers may have been finished for the Warsaw Uprising our land cruisers will be in their element as they're seeking a target that didn't have air support and did have heavy artillery in real life Germany did deploy their heaviest assault guns there examples being the shroom tiga and the car grad this is the only battle where the Land Cruisers may have done well as they were in their element the Land Cruisers may have changed the outcome of a few battles but their cost to manufacture and maintain may have cost her over world war one thing I want to explore is it even possible to build a weapon system this large well with today's technology it may just be possible and I will stress again it is still not useful as a war winning weapon warfare has changed so much in the last 70 years this is just purely for pride and wasting resources I present you with four bagger two nine three four world's largest land vehicle in history it's a bucket excavator very similar in design to the bagger 288 which is more famous and known for our media bagger in German translates to excavator but job of this excavator is to mine coal in a surface mine in Germany now guess which company made the bagger 288 guess ooh gone crop that's right the same company that designed and would have made the two Land Cruisers the same company that made four to eight hundred millimeter Verwey guns sure Gustav and/or it took him a few years but it looks like someone finally got to live out their design fantasies let's look at some of the stats by bagger 288 weighs in at thirteen thousand five hundred tons constructional it finished in 1978 and back then it was the heaviest land vehicle in the world that title was yielded to its bigger brother in 1995 for bagger two nine three four two nine three was made by a different company but is of a very similar design to the two eight eight remarkably so actually height length and even the same cubic meters mind the day as the bagger 288 so we just couldn't disregard the two nine three for the sake of this video but bagger two a eight towers above the countryside at a staggering 96 meters tall and 200 meters long for standard operations the bagger 2a a needs 16550 kilowatts unlike the Ratto Oman the powerfulness isn't generated by the bagger but is externally provided interestingly the power comes from nearby coal-fired power stations which is where most of the coal that is mined by the bagger goes the maximum speed is under one kilometer per hour hill climbing capabilities aren't much better either the maximum gradient it can climb is 5 degrees all 13,500 tons are spread over 12 caterpillar tracks for individual tracks are four point eight meters wide one thing I should mention about the two AAA is that it's low speed maybe due to the high assembly and high center of gravity I'm not worried about it tipping over I'm more worried about the effects of leverage over such a massive arm and that poor little turning base at the bottom that has to balance all of the weight of the bag on top if you want to talk about off-roading capabilities the 2a8 made a 22 kilometer or three weeks this is when it was relocating to a new mining site for trip included going through a river over several roads and even a railway line the reason that aboard up the bagger is to show that the technology is now there but 2a8 was completed in 1978 that's 46 years after 1942 which was when the design for the Land Cruisers was drawn up there are still loads of issues to overcome in a world where wartime Germany successfully invaded United Kingdom before then attacking Russia and winning then and only then when Germany had no immediate enemies then there might have been a reason to build one of the Land Cruisers not to be an actual useful weapon but for propaganda it would make the population of a country who owned the land ship feel safe and strike fear into their enemies one last thing before I end this video I couldn't anticipate you about mentioning this monster if we don't want a massive gun to be tracked we could always go mount it on an old-fashioned railway gun carriage we could learn some lessons from the over burned and conveyor bridge f60 the f60 is a conveyor belt system wider than the height of the Eiffel Tower it's suspended between two monstrous contraptions the whole thing can move sideways on a custom-built vell way its purpose is to transfer waste from a coal mine the machine operates from March 1991 to June 1992 just look at the carriage design supporting all that way it's huge in the 2000s it was turned into a tour site which is now open to the public and I advise if you can't get there in person to give it a look on Google Maps because you can even do a 360 degree tour on the gantry spanning the massive 500 meter gap anyway it's time to wrap up this video I could get lost for hours just reading up a massive earthmovers but it comes down to this would the butter and monster have been worth their time to make know the amount of resources and time used to build them could have been utilized in a much more effective manner in fact it would have been nice if Hitler bypassed Albert Speer and gave both projects to green-light that way World War two could have ended earlier the Land Cruisers may have won a battle or two but it would have cost the outcome of the war like
