the art of losing your teammate's wheel on full display here in cretarium to dolphin a stage five here are the highlights of this tricky course it's got a late steep climb it's 175 kilometers along the stage and the last 80 k's it's got four climbs and between those climbs are valleys of 12 to 20 kilometers which are very quick false flat descent type valleys so the question was would teams be interested or bahrain be strong enough to chase down the break today as well as would teams like mother star want to take it up on this final climb that on paper should really suit val verde in order to drop riders like colbrelli and aaron brew but if a group made it to the finish it was very technical in the last kelowna got a hairpin with 800 to go lucas is still wearing the yellow jersey in this stage five called brelli the big favorite for the stage at the bookies ahead of valverde and aaron beru a strong break too strong in fact went up the road with casper ascorin and tim wells askren's only about nine seconds behind personal burger on gc and so they let his teammate cherny and ryan mullins the trek go up the road and i thought okay that makes sense ascerine and trek have decided that their presence is sabotaging the break because it's forcing borah hansgroh to chase too much so they'll let their teammates who are not threats on gc cherny and mullen go up the road but then they kind of kept chasing astrum kept working he didn't let himself be subsumed into the peloton straight away to save his legs for the finale nor did tim wellands which i thought was a bit unusual so they've still got borah hansgrower and bahrain chasing because askren and wellins has such big threats are still up the road about 30 seconds in front of the peloton churning ryan mullen 50 seconds ahead eventually ascertain did sit up and he would make it to the finish with the group and for name cherny's familiar to you he won a giro stage last year the mortal bennio strike stage he was on ccc then he's on a short-term deal at quickstep he set up the honoree win earlier this year really strong rider good engine but attacks started flowing when he was about 20 seconds ahead of the peloton i think he dropped ryan mullen at this point dare i say is that harry sweeney once again and he was strong at the finish but unlike stages one and two a lot of teams were more interested in trying things today there was a narrow section of road here very exposed as well no trees and ineos as they did in stage seven of the tour last year tried to put everyone in the gutter but the wind wasn't strong enough thomas said it was a good direction just not strong enough and it came back together and sven eric bistrom the norwegian you've already seen him in previous stages attacked boutrago and marco hala on the second to last climb for bahrain victorious were the ones tasked with chasing him but the quick valley between that second to last climb and the final steep climb was too much for bistrom and all the gc teams had begun fighting for position so his one minute lead quickly started to come down and he eventually was caught at the base of that final climb with 13 k's to go and you can see andre amador the ineos domestique sprinting as hard as possible he dropped off almost straight away after this because he's trying to keep thomas port and gegenhart in perfect position because this as you can see this climb is seriously narrow ineos blocked it up with borah houndsgrower who wanted personal burger to stay in the yellow jersey and it was only lawson craddock who was able to make an impression pasha for bnb hotel attack but he was marked by ineos and so ineos basically called bahrain victorious bluff jack hague with 11.2 case to go is called to the front to change down lawson craddock because colbrelli made it over the climb with no trouble given the steady pace and now byron victorious are trying to chase crankback to set him up for a stage victory problem is craddock's really strong we've got a false flat descent where it's tough to bring a rider like him back and it was just turns and then hague working again to bring him back he eventually does so but with only 2.4 2.6 kilometers to go and he spent a lot of energy at this point jack hagan he's the last rider for sony colbrelli so ineos go to the front and here's where the magic begins to happen viakovsky moves over from the left to the right hand side of the road as we look at it and thomas is going to slide up to the right hand side of jack hague's right shoulder we've got a chicane then a sharp right hand hairpin coming straight up and thomas you can already see hague sees him coming and maybe colbrelli could have shot onto thomas wheel right now thomas is starting to accelerate into the space kvkovsky has opened colbrelli doesn't hag is going to try and start to accelerate out of port's wheel you can see him here sprinting to the right hand side of port under the flam rouge but thomas has got the acceleration he's got the gap of two bike lengths on hague and this is the corner right now where you think oh well hey can just slide onto thomas wheel the problem is kvkovsky shuts off the angle in this hairpin and takes the apex so hey can't get onto thomas wheel through the corner and as the camera angle changes you don't really see it but kvkovsky loses the wheel of grant thomas and now it's jack hague the only man left to chase a fresh grant thomas who's been in the wheels all day and is about to do a maximum 75 to 80 second effort on the flat this is vintage great thomas sort of 2013-15 throwback i remember that tour down under 2013 victory on the montague descent he was super strong in the big ring big seated power he won e3 in a similar attack and if you're a lantern rouge youtube member and you're in the lantern rouge discord you'll have seen in my midnight musings last night i was talking about this is a possibility i saw a great thomas seated attack particularly because the time trial yesterday did not go his way and he might have been a bit more motivated to make some time back up 10 bonus seconds on the life of the stage winner and still with 400 meters to go it's jack hay chasing and i'm thinking if they let him keep chasing too long there's no way colbrelli can win eventually michael valgren on education first slides up with 350 meters to go colbrelli gets on his wheel still thomas has got a good two second gap on that group and colbrelli jumps out of the wheel with 175 meters to go thomas is beginning to fade still in the saddle and colbrelli's had a massive snap 1480 watt peak in previous stages and he almost stops pedaling in the last two meters and cold brelli it almost looks like he pips thomas on the line we'll have to wait for the photo finish thomas starts to celebrate he's got the clenched fist ready to pump the air and it changes into anguish as he thinks oh no what have i done did i begin to post up too early and has cold rally pipped me on the line but in fact thomas won the stage i'm not going to say easily but it wasn't as close as it looked live by three quarters of the wheel this is thomas first stageman since the twitter france 2018 he was pretty dismayed after he crashed in that romedy stage where he was trying to out sprint was let's see what thomas had to say after the stage it wasn't planned um hold on hold on thomas i'll let you finish don't i'll let you finish thomas what is that on your head now i don't know what your agent is doing but having you wear those new oakley whatever they're called catos when in fact you won this stage and win your races through the power of the jaw bones and then having to wear them on the podium that is not right don't like the karmic balance about that but i will let you finish but you know i knew that bahrain didn't have any guys left only jackay that hague had been riding and i knew it was all lined out so and i knew the last bit was a bit twisty so i just thought sodis go for it and uh yeah i went with the k to go the boy said on the radio got a gap just went all in but to be honest oh i didn't think i had that on the line like i just sat up maybe two meters before to start to you know give it the big boo but then uh what a man called bro he came past so fast they took my helmet off tomorrow stage in my view looks good for thomas and ineos once again easy to control on colder port and then that final should suit pseudimothy has similar legs to today so in your should be able to control it but rather like valverde if it comes to a sprint could be a big threat but i hope you enjoyed the video like it down below if you did let's see if we can hit 2 000 likes on this vintage great thomas victory i'll see you with the recap of stage six tomorrow ciao
