GearGossip Boss VE-8 Review (ENG)

[Music] hi everybody and welcome back to gear gossip tonight it's about a device that I've been waiting for a long time for it's called the ve8 acoustic singer by boss champagne metallic in a nutshell it's multi-effects device featuring treatment for your acoustic pH so pickup and effect for acoustic guitar treatment for your sloppy vocals and effects including harmonizer for vocals and the basic looper and a ton of in-and-out options and battery power and I'm afraid it's a monster in terms of features and what you can do with it so this was just the nutshell and I gonna give you a rough overview and then a very detailed overview and you can decide when you jump off okay basically what it does this is all that you need and you don't slow that along on stage Oh skies are boo thinking about you here in the calm before the storm after all everything food there is nothing here in the calm after the storm [Music] so this is the rough overview of what it does as you can see it's a three-part device the first part is acoustic guitar then we have vocals and output and looper yeah it starts with treatment for your acoustic guitar this cardboard box piezo guitar is a much better cardboard box now if you're using this this is the a/b comparison [Music] then you have a notch filter for the people on stage and getting rid of it and then we have colors and because it's chorus it's just chorus written on it no it's a different effect it's tremolo it's phaser is delay modulated delay slowed gear octaver but somebody decided it's better to write down chorus on it and we have a reverb unit a independent reverb unit for different styles and it can't really do boom [Music] and of course we have a switch on/off of your desired effect and if you hold it down for two seconds you have a tuner with these LEDs indicating too high or too low on the wall side you have the same thing as you have for acoustic resonance enhancement of your voice a little more presence and overtones and compression that's how it sounds is there anybody going to listen to my silly is there anybody going to listen to my story we have autocorrect hard and soft I don't like this no I won't test it I won't use it if it sounds wacky it's me and I'm proud of it then you have effects like a storage he's come on fess up income coming up cat or hominid carry on my way deputies we're here what dumb may you be happy and of course you have the big big reverb unit miniature don't you try a night how could I explain being you've been inside and the switch that you can use for silencing all kinds of effect on your vocals for things like little Timmy is looking for a small or the guy and the second growl c12 shut the hell up and then we have volume for guitar and vocals and the loop and whatsoever everything that you can do to the system and memorizing presets whatsoever and starting and yeah operating the looper I said presets I said save you cannot save what you recorded nope you have to get rid of it now it's just the settings not the recorded stuff you cannot pre record rhythms or drums no and then lots of routing options and external switches and so on and that's something that you can do [Music] [Music] guess it is purposely that's the way that it was happen so naturally I did not know it was up mixing the surface you holding me toes what was I gonna do I let myself go now but fire to this Gus and all this nervousness forever Oh ain't nobody loves me better makes me happy makes me feel this way nobody let me faster than you so you're still here I'm sorry folks for my singing and playing the days are long gone when I was doing this on a semi-pro level now for the very detailed rundown of what this device can do warning I did my very best I'm sure that I forgot half of it some things like using multiple effects on the same time it didn't even bother looking up or trying this is ridiculous little display and this from manual that you're really really supposed to read I really had a hard time and I really give this thing all sorts of abuse and I'm still looking up things nutshell I'm giving my very best just don't take my word on everything that I say what I'm going to do now is give you the signal path for me and for you as a guideline what can you do to your guitar into your focus until it reaches your ears we start out with the guitar and it comes into you device with a guitar in the socket yes we can do that after that usually you find a gain stage something like clip ah this is loud enough and now we operation level no no clipping Elodie you don't have an idea if it starts something distorted it's too much gain yes there is gain it's hidden globally exit and loop and now this is your gain knob user-friendly isn't it after this you have a noise gate that you can just the same way exit loop and somewhere here is the noise gate but it's there believe me after this noise gate which is global you have an equaliser where exactly this is base this is three levels of low cut this is your no this is not middle this is trouble this is mids this is I guess mid frequency and this is myths Q factor this equalizer is global after this noise gate and equalizer you're reaching the acoustic resonance as I mentioned this is something that is supposed to take your we all love piezo pickups don't we and do something to it that it sounds more natural um it gives you four settings that I will display now not lit is off [Music] and then we have wide [Music] mild [Music] and right [Music] there's a for settings that I already mentioned this is off because off sounds also pretty decent if it's turn up [Music] again an ode to the guys at boss okay then we have successfully treated our piezo pickup then we have this notch dial this is the bass strings and this is the top strings just dial in the string or the nodes that go boom on stage and before you do that please invert the phase and then we have the chorus the chorus is not the chorus this is the effects unit now it's a chorus and this is how the chorus sounds and and that is tremolo [Music] and that's fazer I look at you all see the love ever sleeping while my guitar gently we and that's the delay [Music] and that's the modulated delay [Music] and this is the October that I don't really like but I showcase anyway and that's low gear this is beast mmm sounds [Music] [Music] and then we have the famous ray modulator sounds that you can use on every sound you won't believe how useful this sound is for your acoustic guitar [Music] well this year is just the intensity of course for corals and tremolo and face it their speed the rate also present hold-down rate and then you can slow things down the same for tremolo or phaser or whatsoever or the attack time of your slow gear and for your delay this is the feedback and here is delay time and the I don't know how to call this in English the nose is it eight or dotted eighth you can decide I leave it on dotted eighth because it's my favorite delay and you can tap in with an eternal foot switch the delay time which is very welcome by the way each telephone switch to go I think much more practical than holding down and just a minute then we have a switch of course press and it's switching on the effect and hold down and we have peculiar after that yes after that we go into the looper and then to the reverb and we have four different reverbs when it's not lit its ambience [Music] then we have the rule then we have the hall - and the hall to the effect are pre looper and the reverb is after the looper okay you don't want to record the reverb and that way you can switch it off when you run in front of the house but every effect the delay base is the octaver or ring modulation whatever you want to use is recorded in the looper just memorize this then the looper I will cover this separately so much for guitar did you miss something yes I did miss something the compressor I really take a good compress on acoustic guitars especially when I'm going for based sounds bass drum sounds it's not in there next thing is vocals again in there here's your XLR input and phantom power on/off yes condenser mix and a tiny little dial again knob and a peak led why we can't have the same thing for the guitar I don't get it the manual indicates if it's green there's a signal if it's orange it's cool and if it's red it's too much please set it to it's orange so you harmonize it works the best my experience is if it's orange it's too much because if everything doubles the harmonies and everything somewhere in there there is something distorting maybe I did something wrong but my recommendation is don't orange just don't behead again then we have a noise gate and the global akyuu again bass treble middle and all these parametric stuff after that we have the twin - the coup stick resonance we have enhanced enhancement of the overtones the brightness and adding compression which is absolutely welcome for me but is sometimes to be set in a real realistic way so you still have the ability to signal for you how many things and you compress a course pool then it's too much okay just don't overdo it dissipate the gold but no one knows me it's not known it's a necessary thing there's a place i go to when no one knows me it's not done it's a necessary thing the next thing is autocorrect heart unit soft tune I won't cover this I don't like it please learn to sing I really enjoy just to really really try and completely wreck a song with my own voice and I have the ability to get better I don't want too hard to you in my oh it's not this thing you know I just don't want to after that you go into your effect yes we have free effects and a lots of harmonies that are going in tune with your guitar maybe or with what you want to sing you don't want to go pitch but you might want to go a little bit of coloration but your harmony stay fixed on the note and it sounds awful so you can decide it your harmony should follow or should stay really hard this some settings in between the other thing is a key fixed key I cannot showcase Auto now because there's no guitar attached but the key is easy C D flat D you have to know your pentatonic circle I hope this is the correct expression in English if you want to do a minor or D Dorian what kind of harmonies you want to see if it sounds out of tune wacky and are awful it's you okay just believe me it's you took me a while to accept that fact there's another thing that you can do to you voice it it's changing the gender like more male voices of mom is amazing only active when correction is on I don't know why and I don't like correction so I will not showcase this feature and one more thing that I have to mention is that the Harmonized uses the looper at least Amaya's if you have in chords on your looper you will have your voices following these chords one thing I should mention the word following is correct don't expect it to guess what will be the next chord if you want to do this use a certain key if you don't you will notice AA chord and then the homilies jump you have to get used to it or be a little bit early with your guitar then believing this going to the looper that I will cover later and then into the same reworks that I covered on the guitar and now for the loop finally our the other sides here this is a two-track looper you can decide if you want to loop the guitar or loop the voice or both or nothing what it does is I should show this life I guess this LED indicates what is going on if that LED is black in indicated there is nothing recorded just go on at a point you will start recording and this thing is red [Music] and if you hit again blue that means it's lay back now if you hit again you're in pink violet purple whatsoever overdubbing [Music] [Music] and back to play [Music] and if you want to stop you go double click and then it starts flashing blue that means I'm not playing but there's something recorded be careful [Music] and if you want to stop after play and erase this hold down and if it's flashes red did it things are erased this is the looper I personally do not like this clip for stopping at a certain point maybe it's if you don't hit it really precisely just starting overdubs and you have some wacky cord in your loop and you cannot undo this is one thing that I should mention you cannot aah oh sorry hah undo do it again no you have to start all over again there is no undo redo but you can use an external switch for stopping and erasing without this thing starting to play again please memorize this fact as well as the tap after that looper we have the guitar level this is everything guitar including the looper and vocal and if you're holding down this one you can adjust the percentage of looper 50 meaning it's the same level as you plated lower means it's not as loud and if you're raising it's louder than you actually played it and now we are leaving the device and for this I will as I mentioned on the beginning there's a lots of things that you can do with these sockets guitar AM microphone in there okay aux in to line outs left and right XLR to things and phones use B and switch in it that's a lot and you can route whatsoever you can have a click drag running through the aux in and have it only on the phones you can have e to turn to mono mixes on those both lines going to monitoring and this thing going to front of the house without reverb you can have this thing have reverb and this not only the guitar and have your vocals on lines and read the manual it's a lot actually you have the separate volume setting for phones but it's hidden in the menus again and you have an USB no sorry no editor but the possibility to use this as an audio interface you can use this as an audio interface for your laptop onstage use your laptop for audio treatment and then use the outputs of this thing and then we have this tab this is a disaster actually why because I mentioned I really like tapping my delay I need an external switch ah yeah you can configure this alright and then I really need to stop on a second switch yes you can attach two switches with a Y cable or the boss FS six featuring two switches well other manufacturers managed to do three switches with a stereo sockets like Big E textbook nevermind this is not as catastrophic you could also use a MIDI 5 thing for a really big floor board for all these functions that you can let to it but it all doesn't matter because the settings are please tell me I'm wrong they are global you could for example switch on the reverb yeah but you can't because you have set it switches to tap and on off of the looper you cannot have a preset with different layout we don't need a looper for example or you don't use a delay if you playing while my guitar gently weeps you might want to use a looper on/off and the fixed phaser sound but you want to have a slight boost maybe on a switch or more reverb you cannot because it's global you cannot have presets with different switch settings after all these complaining and talking and whatsoever what do you do with it actually you can do a lot with it even if you don't use a looper and you don't have any love for Harmonizers or ring modulation on your acoustic guitar it's a very compact battery driven mixer with in-ear monitoring set it onstage acoustic guitar with a sloppy piezo will sound decent semi decent any amore touring sorry folks no limiter the rest front of the house and it begun with it you don't need more actually for the price we're already settled one thing that came to my mind while I was writing down this I have a looper even if you don't have any sort of useful looper you might want to use it for a soundcheck it records just sloppy voices and sloppy guitar and stand in the middle of the room and you see global EQ setting mm-hmm that's it's a pity actually because that would be really useful to just have your new pro running said okay this is my bass a little bit more mids on the on the wall cause more treble on the world calls okay too much reverb we're done no you can't and then things that evolving it you can use your effects you can use your time delay you can really make your guitar a little bit more precious you can replace the second singer for some songs not for every song but for some songs it works really cool ways going for yeah have a leak or just forgot his microphone which is something that happened to me actually it's really really cool to have this delay and a blooper because the delay keeps me in time me actually because my timing is it sucks basically so I need this delay to be in time for the next overdub punching while I was thinking about why should I use a looper on a vocal track I'm not Katie tongue style I'm not yet something I don't want to loop complete song parts and do some this building of walls of sound and I cannot do harmonizing with myself for example how to California playing the first refrain with a normal voice and then so every refrain this thing builds up no because I don't hear what I'm doing it's too loud it's all my voice and all punching in my ears I'd lose any sort of tracking but what it does is as I mentioned the effects is pre looper so you can do your room and record it for your song [Music] [Music] in despair tell me I can use it anymore [Music] it's getting down to Nazi I feel like I'm knockin on heaven's door [Music] knock knock knockin on heaven's door [Music] heavens Oh or one thing that I'm missing at the moment and will not miss when I buy this thing is I cannot think all the time I play geeks but I said okay this is five sets 3/4 hours which means I'm supposed to sing four hours alone if I'm just able with a simple looper to record the verse and the refrain and then do a solo of it it's just a little bit more time for the song and little less strain on the voice something like this but I'm standing by the river and the world and does not though always with every poison you can think of and them on the nead street lights on the lighter diana and get beyond barely common shadows and a border fear of violence jokes to smile on every face call me since it's me this ain't no technology can break down oh no it's just the road to hell [Music] oh the roast your mob with credit and there's nothing you can do it so just bits of paper flying away from you I love that world it's good gronckles down here [Music] this is the road to em now let's just separate but it's cool what it's not cool what is really cool is there's a lot of tiles this is not TC the play acoustic whatsoever with one knob decent mixer decent effects it does it all the next better thing would be the voice live free which is a completely different beast it's small it's it's light fits in a gig back user headset and a small guitar and you're done and now for what I don't like I mentioned this switch thing this is a simple firmware thing please boss change this make it preset able to put it like this what I also like to have is a dedicated while you not for my ears if I want to hear myself a little bit louder I want to go Ock and I know that busines is free and one thing that is a miss and could be in there and should be in there for me it's the timing thing if I have a tap for my delay and not for my chorus okay I already told you that if I have a click this is the temple of my song why can't I not have my looper be in the same time so your hidden your record button a little bit too early or too late it can do the punch in exactly on your tab then temple and the sloppy punch-out correct it the same way my cheapo Jam man does that and if I have kept in the loop that is criticized and the phone's out why can I not have a cheapo click track then we're close to perfection click tracks are for free on any Android or iPhone device oh it so much for it well are head off and get one of these actually for rehearsing practicing because it's really hell on your timing and your intonation it makes you think you cannot sing you cannot play you should just quit it's the best training partner that you can have as I mentioned in the beginning download the manual and read it so I can recommend for this thing oh here we go music
