Gassers Car Show

a racing tradition that started more than 60 years ago was honored at the gassers tribute car show presented by the automobile driving museum car enthusiasts gathered from all over California to celebrate the gassers hot rods and the legends that paved the way video des lieux brings us the sights and sounds I'm a good to do and I'm here at the automobile driving museum as today we pay tribute to a classic hot rod known as the gases which started way back in the early 50s and is still going strong today in 2014 we're going to take a look at some beautiful cars talk to some racing legends it's gonna be a wild ride so buckle up and let's take a look tell me about this beautiful event you guys are hosting here today well it's it's one of a series of events that we're holding at the Museum to try to expand the base of people who show up here this is a very unique crowd these cars the gassers were really the extension of the early hot rods and the in the 40s and 50s and represent the state of the art for hot rods so we've decided to bring them in and got a nice crowd today and it's a different set of folks and usually attend the museum the beauty of these cars is a lot of them have not been altered to actually assemble this many gassers in one building is typically unheard of and how many do you have actually at this building here today for the event there's close to 60 cars and some car shows you might see one or two but to see sixty of them all together in one place it's typically unheard of tell us a little bit more about the design and what's in exactly the type of engine in this vehicle there is no radiator so it's not something that could be street driven there are no front brakes there's no parachute on this car which would not pass Tech today the roll bar that's in this car right now is only a single loop behind the driver safety on this car is very minimal which it would not pass back today and just to think that the guy was doing 160 miles an hour in this car is just crazy yes it was the craziness factor now where these pickups more favorable and more popular or did that not matter at all that's the one thing with gassers is that you're gonna see a rainbow of cars it's not one type of model so many cars were used at that point in time that whatever you can imagine let's stick an engine in it and let's go what is unique about this car is that in 1969 the last year it was raised the motor under here is a small-block Chevrolet but it has the escandarian cam the Hilborn fuel injection and it just had everything you could buy to go fast what's your first car what is your first guest how'd you get involved in that well first we'd that we'd find an old model T and a lot that we could buy for five or ten dollars learn how to get it running and that we learned mechanics that way Model T was a simple engine to it without instructions you know what are some of your favorite guests or vehicles or some that stick in your mind from over the past years these gassers as I don't know exactly how it got started but the Willie started to get become real popular and people that racing on gas it was less cheaper to do that and then pretty soon it went supercharged and got pretty fast see the drag racing started after World War two and that gave the average guy a chance to race at different levels you know and it got bigger and bigger and bigger and more people got into when Sahil born of mechanical Hilborn injected small-block automatic transmission on a 57 Pontiac rear end it's basting in the way it was raced back in the day I haven't done a whole lot of changes and the paint job is an original paint job Zeus told me with a paint job you can't get this any more than sure and said if something happens to it it's total that's it if we can get it anymore it's kind of sad because it is a beautiful paint job but again like they said to reproduce it would be darn nearly impossible so I'm guessing you're really really careful in the garage where you keep this no bicycles are on little kids playing around it just sits in the garage and sometimes that the bed ends up full apart it's a track you know I enjoy that's the thing of it tell us about this beautiful vehicle here what type of model is it and what did you have to do anything to restore it or is it pretty much in its original form when you got it when I got it it was it was pretty basic it was already painted red this paint job the body and the doors is over 20 years old so Willy scoop it's basically a reconstructed gasser like it went back in the days so nothing really high-tech in this car what specifically kind of attracted you to the gasser type model cars and what got you hooked really because it was a coupe and it had doors on I had a good 49 Chevrolet fastback death engine I had went into a Willy's it belonged to a friend of mine and we drove it and I put it in a sports car it was a Corvette I went to the US Nationals in 1962 and I won the US Nationals in Indianapolis Indiana Wow I raced it the last two years and I will race there again this year oh wow huge 79 amazing I've been doing it for 60 years well congratulations well there you have it guys it has been an exciting day here at the Automotive driving Museum I had a blast I learned a whole bunch I talked to some amazing people and it was a wild ride I'm gonna buckle up and
