400 liters? it was 500 GALLONS, which is approx 1,900 liters.
The way this was done back in the 80s when I was a cashier at a Circle K is this:
Pull up to the pump and lift the pump handle. Clerk (me) hears the register beeping, glance outside to see somebody at the pump, and push 12 Approve.
Person pumps gas. This next step is where the theft happens.
Person lays pump handle on the ground and drives away. Clerk notices a half hour later.
See, what happens is that by them laying the pump handle on the ground instead of hanging it up is that my register never beeps to tell me that somebody has finished pumping. I'm restocking cigarettes and gum so, I'm not sitting there staring out the window to watch for a drive-off. I'll only notice when I finally get back behind the register and see pump 12 is blinking but, the gas count isn't moving and there's nobody at the pump.
Happened to me twice. Apparently, that was a pretty low number for working there for a year.
