part one wayne and i flew vfr and ifr comparing for flight and garmin pilot today we're going to do a more step-by-step comparison so you can see what the differences are welcome in this video we're going to compare a garmin pilot and and four flight and we're two old not seasoned pirates you both started when did you start flying about eight years ago eight years ago i started five or six years ago and i started flying with a garment pilot by accident uh because i had a garment watch which i'm wearing funny enough i started almost day one with four flag oh okay cool and um i when i was selecting garmin pilot i was wondering which one is is the best and i had no idea how to how to select so we're going to help you guys who haven't made a selection yet make your decision which is uh the best of the two and this is going to be very surprising i think you'll enjoy it i hope so to you and if you have any questions on topics you would like us to uh to cover we're going to be flying a lot with both applications so we have time to cover your questions as as well [Music] let's start with setting up the map in government pilot the first choice you make is for a map or a chart a chart is a digital copy of the paper vfr charts created and maintained by the faa garmin pilot comes with four maps as well roads and borders vfr maps ifr maps and openstreetmap each map can be configured in great detail in what you want to see and at which zoom level then on top of your map you have layers which garmin calls overlays there are as you can see numerous overlays you can put on your map to keep an eye on weather traffic and much more too much to cover in this video now let's compare the default views garmin has its main navigation at the bottom or if you want to run it more like garmin panels in your plane the traditional menu system i prefer the main nav at the bottom so you can instantly switch between the main views that you will need at the top is your main navigation items including direct to nearest emergency with checklists and if you tap on the route a quick link to your flight plan the aeronautical map contains six categories of items namely airports airspace airways frequency terrain and highways for now we'll select all except airspace and airways [Music] let's plan a route side by side on the left garmin on the right for flight it's basically the same you in a text box you type in the route you're going to fly we're going to fly from santa barbara over gavioda two centers a bispo you type it in and you hit on show route and then you can zoom in to this specified route and as you can see depending on your map setup you'll see different lines or different images but they can be pretty much the same in how you're keying in routes no major differences here [Music] next we define the aircraft we'll be flying to select its type we search for for example 172 model s's and then enter our tail number we complete our aircraft by entering its basic performance characteristics for climb and cruise now let's look at selecting an aircraft in a garment pilot tap on the aircraft and then you can select from your existing library i have a couple of planes that i regularly fly with set up over here that you can just click on and then you're all set to go has selected and loaded the configuration you can also go into by clicking on the eye into the details of any plane so let's say you picked one from the standard library that garmin comes with but you want to configure different performance based on maybe you tuned your plane or you made different configurations then you can go in here make all the changes that you want and save them and they'll be saved with that specific aggregate now let's go to flight profile for flight [Music] let's set our altitude for cruise we'll try a vfr westerly altitude of 6500 feet to see if that altitude works for terrain and airspace avoidance we'll check the vertical profile for this route flight profile and garment pilot is pretty similar you click on altitude it will show you with the winds what you can fly you pick your altitude and that is then all set up for you then if you open up the multi-screen vision you can see the selected altitude and the flight profile right there and see if there are any problems also with airspaces and you can see a bunch more things that we'll cover in the future [Music] of course we're not flying unless and until the weather meets our personal minimums for santa barbara the current metar shows the usual morning marine layer but taft and moss forecasts are more encouraging for an afternoon flight in garment pilots the easiest way to fuel the overview of the weather is by selecting the widgets and then scrolling through them as you can see here it will show the weather along the route the forecasts and all the different spy wraps the node amps and everything else that is that is going on so that's in the multi-screen view and then choose widgets and make sure you have the correct widgets set up [Music] well there you have it a little side by side of garmin pilot and and four flight i think both excellent apps but what do you think anyway yeah i think they're both excellent apps and really i think it's a matter of taste from my perspective for flight's done an amazing job especially and surprisingly since the acquisition by boeing by setting a pretty solid development pace which means of course features pretty much on a monthly basis so i've i've been really pleased with four flight and what they've done not only over the eight years i've used it but even the last two or three years yeah i agree and i think garmin has been put under pressure by four flights and keep turning new capabilities into the product they were a little behind i would say a few years ago uh they are a little lacking on the weather i think far flight is is a bit better with the weather but we'll cover that maybe in the future i wish for flight would buy windy do you have the app windy that'd be awesome yeah that would be really cool and so in garment there is a work workaround as you showed in the video with the widgets which gives you a pretty quick overview of getting weather that is cool how you scroll by the different locations in the flight path yeah i like that yeah but the weather briefing uh dear garmin people if you are watching please have a look at for flight and fix your weather you can do it i think another leg up that four flight has is the support of various devices adsbn devices in particular yeah uh centuries stratas a handful of others so obviously garmin has the advantage of being connected better to the panel yeah because garmin on both sides and paneling on the ipad yeah there's definitely a benefit if you already have a garmin panel in choosing for garmin because the user interface is going to be very very similar and the integration although i've never seen any issues with four flights integration with garmin panels in pushing uh your route back and yeah back and forth also quick but um yeah i i had to buy a garmin avsb uh device because it doesn't work with with anything else so that is a bit of a downside although the pricing is competitive you know what though jan you haven't changed my mind i'm sticking with foreplay okay well i'm sticking with garmin powder we have to duke it out yes both x1 products and i don't think you can go wrong with either one of them let us retrieve yeah they're both they're both good but government pilot is better and by the way uh each of us have uh uh posted on youtube a getting started video uh mine getting started with four flight and yan's getting started with garmin pilot so if you want to get your own feet wet and a little bit of a jump start either in your first of those two packages or maybe you're using one and you'd like to check out the other go get a free trial and use our getting started videos to to jump into it yeah that's that's a good idea and pick the best one for you yeah four flick right yeah thanks
