the movie begins with a conversation between a young boy named Shawn Donovan and his loving mother Mary Donovan however the tone shifts dramatically when a carjacking unfolds before Shawn and his father resulting in the tragic death of Mary this traumatic event leaves a lasting imprint on Shawn shaping him into a serious and introverted individual throughout his teenage years 10 years later the memory of his mother's violent death still haunts Shawn making him hyp sensitive to any form of violence even minor in like witnessing bullying at school trigger intense reactions from him to cope with his anxiety and agitation Shawn secretly takes medication hidden within a bandage container keeping his struggles concealed from his father despite his internal struggles Shan continues to excel academically showing a particular interest in subjects like chemistry that go beyond his school curriculum however when his father Terry Donovan tries to talk to him about his grades their conversations often lack depth and connection the strained relationship between Shawn and Terry has persisted since the death of Shaun's mother leaving them feeling more like strangers than Father and Son despite Terry's efforts to bring normaly back into Shaun's life they haven't been entirely successful one day as Terry visits his wife's grave he apologizes for not visiting more often he shares with her that Shawn has made a new friend and plans to attend a party with him seeing his son slowly start to engage with life again brings Terry a sense of relief meanwhile as Shawn boards a train he suddenly experiences a vivid flashback to his childhood he remembers how his mother Mary used to support him through difficult times especially when his alcoholic father would subject him to abuse Mary would take him to music classes providing a much needed escape from their troubled home life back in the present as Shawn walks past a park he Witnesses a drug addicted woman pleading with her dealer for more time to pay for drugs she obtained from him after the woman leaves Shawn catches the attention of the dealers Tony and stretch who notice him standing nearby as the Mobsters begin to threaten Shawn the boy unexpectedly accuses Tony of being responsible for a child's murder this accusation causes Tony to lose control and he violently attacks Shawn In This Moment Shawn reveals a side of himself that no one had seen before he fights back not only to defend himself but also to honor the memory of the child who was killed in a surprising turn of events Shawn manages to seize control of Tony's gun and ultimately shoots him the scene shifts to Teresa Ames a police officer dealing with personal challenges such as her ex-husband's persistent calls regarding their son despite these struggles Teresa is tasked with a critical case involving Larry Childs a drug dealer accused of murdering two people despite Teresa's diligent efforts the court hearing for Larry's case is where she will partner with her colleague Gary to tackle new challenges coincidentally within the same unit officer Bill Baldwin is present someone Shan has known for a long time he occasionally visits Bill to use his computer as nights and Teresa prepares to leave the police station she comes across Shawn who is using the printer unsupervised Shawn explains his connection to officer Bill and then leaves intrigued Teresa examines the print out left by Shawn and discovers the unfamiliar term tricel written on it though puzzled she dismisses it and heads back to her car only to find one of the tires punctured Shawn witnesses her struggle and offers to help sparking a conversation about Teresa's ongoing case recognizing Teresa from news reports about Larry's trial Shawn questions if the however Teresa disagreed feeling there's more to the story Teresa learns about Shaun's tragic past from Gary his mother was killed right in front of him 10 years ago despite the trauma Shawn visits the police station every day to look through mug shots hoping to find his mother's killer one day Teresa approaches Shawn and offers to help him find the truth though hesitant at first Shawn eventually agrees to let Teresa assist him meanwhile a prostitute named Lizzie tries to tell her client Joe that she can't work that night due to being sick but Joe reacts violently forcing Lizzie out of her room Shawn Witnesses the altercation and steps in to protect Lizzie he fights with Joe and both of them end up injured however Shaun's intervention wasn't random it is revealed that he chose Joe from the mugshot database intending to stop his abusive Behavior as Joe threatens him Shawn quickly pulls out a pistol from his pocket and shoots him in the chest killing him instantly the next day Teresa and Gary go to investigate Joe's death they meet the prostitute who witnessed the incident she tells them that Joe was involved in the murder of a 13-year-old girl but escaped punishment the woman only remembers seeing Shawn wearing a black outfit and believes he was sent by God to save her while discussing the case Teresa realizes that the person who killed Joe might be the same one who killed Tony to confirm her Theory they go to the morg to compare the bullets found in Joe's body with the ones from Tony's murder during this visit Teresa realizes that Joe might be the person Shawn was looking for the day before she asks Drive coroner about tricin the word she saw on Shaun's paper the doctor and his assistant confirmed that tricin is a poisonous substance that can cause swelling in the esophagus leading to Suffocation doctor coroner also confirms that the bullet recovered from both victims matches indicating that the same person is responsible for both murders to learn more about Shawn Teresa invites him to lunch during during their conversation they go to a Chinese restaurant where Shawn shows his fluency in Chinese by warning a couple who were hurling abusive remarks Shawn reveals that his mother encouraged him to learn multiple languages Teresa then tells him that his mother's case is considered a random carjacking with no leads she advises Shawn to move on and live a normal life frustrated Shawn questions Teresa about what she would do if he knew the murderer's identity Teresa emphasizes the importance of due process and the need for evidence before charging someone with a crime Shawn becomes increasingly enraged pointing out the flaws in the system and the Injustice of criminals Like Larry child's avoiding punishment he feels frustrated drug addict despite Shaun's actions Teresa tries to apprehend him but he manages to escape afterward one of the officers informs Teresa that the attacker spoke Chinese to the boy asking them to leave before the fight started as Shawn wakes up the next day he finds himself in a dream where Teresa is arresting him but it quickly Fades away it happens to be Shaun's birthday sateri decides to take him to his mother's favorite restaurant to celebrate with some cake unexpectedly they run into Terry's old friend Aaron who recognizes him as rock a nickname from his boxing days Aaron now owns the restaurant and mentions having some old photos of Terry and his friends in the back while Terry catches up with Aaron Shawn learns about his father's past as an alcoholic who used to get into street fights Aaron explains how Terry earned the nickname Rock during those times after their brief reunion Terry apologizes for leaving abruptly and exchanges contact information with Aaron for a future Meetup leaving the restaurant Terry decides to treat Shawn to a boxing match spending quality time with his son after a long time as a final surprise Terry takes Shawn to the street where Mary his attention as he notices the bully from his school is harassing a female friend unable to tolerate such Behavior Shawn loses control and brutally beats the bully after being stopped by his friend Shawn rushes to Aaron's restaurant while Teresa prepares to follow him determined to uncover the truth behind his actions as Shawn continues on his way he can't shake off The Haunting memories of Larry's voice in the tragic night when his mother was killed he vividly recalls the moment when Terry suddenly stopped the car in the darkness after they were rear ended it was Larry child who confronted Terry that night saying something before turning his attention to Mary and ending her life with a gunshot the pieces of the puzzle start to come together in Shaun's mind and he feels compelled to investigate further driven by his suspicions Shawn even breaks into Aaron's restaurant hoping to find some Clues but by the time Teresa arrives at the scene Shawn has already left inside the restaurant Teresa discovers old photos of Terry and Larry child together further deepening her suspicions about their connection meanwhile Terry returns home to find his house in dissaray concerned he contacts the police to report the Breakin unaware of the unfolding events involving his son and Teresa's investigation Terry goes into the basement and finds Shawn there as Shawn sits in the basement feeling very drunk memories of his troubled past rush back he remembers the times when his dad would drink too much and hurt him and his mom with strong emotions Shawn grabs a nearby gun and accuses his dad of working with a man named Larry child to plan his mom's murder Shawn thinks Terry did it to get her life insurance money hoping to escape their poor life and pay off his debts Shaun's accusation weighs heavily on Terry as he listens in shock he tries to explain that he would never do such a terrible thing to his own family but Shawn is sure his dad is guilty fueled by years of pain and anger in a tense moment Terry somehow gains control over Shawn he confesses to knowing Larry child but says Shawn misunderstood what happened that night Shawn keeps insisting the killer called Terry Rock but Terry denies it trying to calm his son feeling overwhelmed with disbelief Shawn aims the gun at his father's chest and tragically ends his life during this Teresa arrives at the scene as Teresa confronts Shawn he accuses Terry of hiring Larry child to kill his mom with the gun still on the table Shawn then turns to Teresa begging for her help realizing that not all Justice can come from the ways of the law Teresa decides to get rid of the gun used in The Murder By tossing it into the river later on Shawn writes a letter to Larry Childs who's serving time in jail instead of holding on to anger Shawn forgives Larry hoping it eases his guilt from the screams of his victims that haunt him Shawn just wants to know the truth about his dad's part in the murder so he includes two stamps in an envelope for Larry to respond to in the letter Shawn asks Larry to use a black stamp if his dad is guilty and a red one if he's innocent but Larry being dishonest sends back the letter with a red stamp Shawn expected this though however it is revealed that he had coated the stamps glue with tricel a deadly chemical due to this Larry dies painfully from a swollen throat
