go over a couple troubleshooting tips for a furnace if it's not getting hot enough or if it's cycling on and off very quickly and here we have a carrier furnace and I'll just show you in this style the way to get inside is just unscrew this bolt on the very top and it's going to allow us to open up the furnace so I turned the heat on and now it's calling for heat the igniter is going to heat up and you see the igniter on the left heeing up and now it's calling for gas and it's starting to ignite the flames on the burners but then it shuts itself off so if you have a situation like this what you have 90% of the time is just a dirty flame sensor so we'll go through the steps on how to clean it so on the right side of the Furnace there's a small metal rod and sometimes it's going to be straight and sometimes it's going to have a 90° angle to it so all I'm going to do is remove this and we don't want to touch it with our hands get any oil on it but almost all of them are held in in place by one screw and I'm just using a nut driver to loosen this and now I'm just going to remove the flame sensor and that's all there is to it again you don't want to touch it you don't want to get oils on this and you can see the debris that builds up on this and all you need to do is is just take something that's just slightly abrasive and in this case I'm just going to use a new $5 bill and I'm going to clean it off and you can use if you have a a very very fine sandpaper or an Emy cloth you can use that too you don't want to be too aggressive because you can actually scratch it and shorten its life but just by doing something as simple as this just cleaning this off we should be able to solve our problem and if you do this once every year or once every couple years uh you'll add years of life to the flame sensor so now we're just going to feed it back into the bracket that holds it and we want to make sure the angle is the same we need that to be setting into the flame of that burner and usually the bracket holds it in one position but just make not of the position uh before you remove it so that you can make sure you put it back in the same location so now we'll turn up the heat and see if that solved a problem steps so we turn the heat back up and we'll see if the uh flame stay on now so it looks good so it looks like we've solved the problem so very easy way to repair most furnaces if they're just cycling on and off too fast is to clean the clean the flame sensor
