I'm glad there was a good color theory explanation, I was trying to talk to some friends about this and they didn't really understand what I was saying so maybe I can share this. Is the whole tf2 machinima stuff just a style thing for this guys channel? I'd never heard of them before.

Today's episode of FUNKtv is sponsored by the letter "J". Keen eyes on the channel may have noticed that I've been hiding a lot of JoJo references in my recent videos. Well, in case the message wasn't clear... I like JoJo, I'm the kind of guy that over-analyses everything and David Production has not failed me in that department, the show's always clean, consistent, and entertaining, but I want to talk about something very specific I haven't really noticed anybody else talk about in the show and that's it's inventive use of color. Ya know... These things? hEY HEY HEY wait wait wait okay? I know color sounds kind of boring, but trust me, this is gonna This is gonna blow your mind! So just please bear with me! You've been waiting a long time for a FUNKe video Okay? Just on the surface JoJo is very abstract with its use of color. None of the characters in the series actually have canonical color schemes, so when DP turned it into an anime... Ok... Well at actually sounds kind of weird... When David turned it into an anime, they took a lot of creative liberties on color palettes. Characters have a base color scheme, but then they'll flip-flop and change these colors to reinforce the tone of scenes. Now all of that is nerd talk, I have a list of some of my favorite examples of color usage in the show that I'll be going through today. There may be some minor spoilers, so I really advocate you watch the show yourself first, but if not I'll keep it understandable. Joseph Joestar is a clever boy *Gasps*- NANI? He loves to talk to his enemies by predicting their next sentence, almost as if he knows their every step before they'll even make them. But what I really love about this is that David created a very specific visual cue for it. One I like to call the... GOTCHA! This is a good example of abstract color composition. When a character gets "GOT" , we see them in this vivid kaleidoscope-y color palette. Such an overwhelmingly stark contrast from the previous scene perfectly invokes the same surprise and confusion the character is going through when it hits, in fact, at one point another character actually uses this trick on Joseph himself, and he gets stuck in the exact same visual cue! It sounds so stupid and weird on paper, and that just perfectly reflects Joseph because he's a fucking stupid and weird character, and I love it! I'm Michael Jordan, stop it, get some help. You may have noticed that Joseph Joestar can be shortened to JoJo, the same applies for the Joestars of every generation in the series. The reason I bring this up is because I myself am a JoJo- Aww shit! Hey Ju Gia, you think maybe you could get back on topic? Oh no no NO NO! I'm not dealing with it today Engineer, I'm writing you out of the episode! Oh like hell you a- So these buff dudes are brawling it out in a nurse's office, and to extremely simplify things Jotaro is the good guy, and Kakyoin is the bad guy. We see Kakyoin in his vivid green colour scheme, and Jotaro in a deep purple, but then the colors flip-flop and Kakyoin interjects that morality is decided by the victor, with this we get to see a purple Kakyoin and a green Jotaro. By presenting these characters with swapped colour schemes, it reinforces this idea that morality is based on perspective. I looked everywhere, and I can't find anybody talking about this, but it's such a fucking brilliant design choice! They could have easily left them with their normal color palettes and called it a day, but they used color composition to its full potential! JoJo part 4 takes place in Mori-oh-cho Japan, during this part David decided they would make the sky yellow, the trees purple, the streets green and to this day nobody seems to know why. It was never shown in the Manga that way. Nobody ever acknowledges they are that colour! But I have a theory on this. I think David specifically chose this palette to reinforce the fact that it's a creepy town. the first intro is called crazy The first intro is called Crazy Noisy Bizzare Town, and from the outside it seems like a normal place, but on the inside there's a lot of weird shit going on. This also circles back to how JoJo has no canonical colour schemes, which means going off course like this does not devalue anything. I legitimately never even noticed the trees and the streets were weird colors until I watched it again; I noticed the piss-colored sky, because that one's obvious, but it never bothered me. It just gave me this eerie vibe that the town was not what it seemed to be. Have a look at the town's outskirts. Now, let's look at it with a contemporary color scheme. You'll notice that it looks really boring! (Keyboard Typing) Why would you even make your anime look this realistic? It's anime! I watch it to avoid real life! It's difficult to fully convey my point using only direct examples, so to help drive it home I'll highlight the importance of color using another one of my favorite anime examples: Death Note Aw shit, not that one. In Death Note, color is used to invoke psychological response. when Light Yagami monologues to himself, he gains this ominous red tint to his person. When L interacts with him, he gains a more tranquil blue. We also see this from the inquisitive and hopeful Matsuda who turns yellow while working on the task force. Same with other more scattered examples throughout the series. The importance of this is that it aligns with the philosophy of colours, and really provides a textbook example of how visual design can be used to reinforce story points. JoJo follows similar design philosophies albiet and much more - and - ways, and both shows do a fine job at that and honestly man, any chance I get to rain praise on Death Note is a chance I'm gonna take. Even the second opening is absolutely filled with invocative colour use... A LOT of colour use! Jesus Christ! I don't even know what I'm supposed to feel watching this! Hey, that's actually a good reflection of the show itself! I could go on for hours about the use of color in JoJo's intros, and I'm being serious about that too! They are insane, but you know I've got a video to wrap up here so- [Brief panting] What else is there to say..? [More panting] REESE'S PUFFS [x4] Even the smallest details in JoJo coloring exists with a purpose. Stand users often share a similar color with their stands. Oh yeah, if you don't know what a stand is, it's basically your own personal punching ghost. I have one myself, it's called Sandviches Time. YATATATA YATATATATA The show often starkly contrasts characters with their surroundings and visualizes more magical concepts very colorfully and uniquely. Take for instance Hamann (Hamon) which is basically body energy which is really vibrant and sparkly. Especially when mixed with soap for some reason... I guess the point I'm trying to make is that every part of a show's production is important. Cinematography is just a blanket term for a lot of smaller, interconnected concepts, and at the end of the day: watching buff shirtless dudes pummel each other will always be my favorite pass-time. But JoJo takes it to a whole new level, and I'm glad they made that effort! Now we just have to wait for part 5 to finally get announced. Oh the video is over? We hardly had any visual gags! Uh, okay, I'm just gonna stuff them all under the end. Oh hey Spy! I like the new taunt- EUUGH! Umm the video is over
