[Music] greetings and salutations internet friends and welcome back to another episode of the first time film club my name is emily the titular first timer this is matthew my husband cinema sherpa and viewer submitted title movie veteran which i think is appropriate yeah i don't know if you guys have figured it out yet but i try and select names based on the movie like the theme of the movie that we're going to be watching so like you know i'm clever don't worry about it don't look into it uh but that was submitted by kevin garnica thank you kevin for that and i apologize if i butchered your last name i'm real good at it um but yes we are watching our way through a very long list of movies that i have not seen but that matthew has i.e cinema sherpa um but what movie are we watching today tonight we're going to be watching the 1987 war drama full metal jacket as per usual i don't give you any information other than the name in the genre you go in with whatever you already know you let everybody know what you know about this movie then we watch it and we talk about it so what do you know about full metal jackets okay so i know about three things okay actually hold on i'm gonna ask a question and i don't think you're probably gonna answer it but i'm gonna ask it anyways is this the one where he says you can handle the truth [Music] not going to answer yeah that's what i thought so i don't know if this is that one but it might be and if it is cool good for me and if it's not don't worry about it maybe i'll edit this out [Laughter] uh the other thing i do know is this is stanley ku krubrick crew cute oh you're so close q brick there you go brick that'll do yep nailed it got it in one don't look into it uh this is a film by him stanley we're on a first name basis yeah uh it's a war movie so i'm i don't know how i'm gonna feel about it but i brought i got my tissues there they're prepared and i didn't wear a lot of eye makeup so we'll see the only other thing that i know about this okay [Music] so this is how my brain works hey guys future emily here i am in the middle of the edit and just had to speak to the sheer volume of crazy that i'm about to spew um just know that i now know that most of what i said is not correct uh so as you're watching this next little bit just watch matthew's reaction it's just it sums up the whole situation i think so you know just enjoy and um yeah here we go so yeah i'm pretty sure that it's the army because i know that in the muse song psycho they use a clip from a war movie and i'm pretty sure that it's this movie and it's a drill sergeant screaming at some dude and love the song by the way wow that's just look it up i did it perfect um but i know that the army calls them drill sergeants but the marines call them drill instructors so that's the that's the journey that you just went through that's how my brain works most days so i know that yep [Music] okay sorry you said that's how your brain most worst date works on most days and i just thought well guess the other days it just takes those days off oh no you're like not super wrong but yeah i don't know anything about this movie i it vietnam i think maybe [ __ ] let's just watch it maybe okay okay oh before we do watch it though i do have to say this is a patreon poll winner um and so that means that this is going to be a full-length reaction uh rather than one will be available on our patreon so if you're interested check the link in the description below anything else from you before we get started nope uh you'll see me taking notes that's about it yep all right let's get into it i guess yep all right here we go let's do it [Music] i hope you ain't got no moles they gonna take care of them for you [Music] would be all right take a soft tablet you'd this comes from [Music] everything clean oh no so that your action is beautiful leonard talks to his rifle i mean he's been told that it's his best friend so like today you are marines you're part of a brotherhood i've sat in those bleachers homer pyle comer pale sir yes sir you forget your [ __ ] name all 300 infantry you made it i don't like how this just turned into a horror movie [Music] hi joker are those full metal jacket you will place that rifle on the deck at your feet and step back away from it [Music] you got girlfriend vietnam not just this minute we love you a long time [Music] this is a lot in a short amount of time to process uh so many things now i know where that comes from um love you long time okay all right you know he's never been in this [ __ ] because he ain't got the stare mister the thousand-yard stare a marine gets it after he's been in the [ __ ] for too long i am woefully unfamiliar with the vietnam war a lot of this is lost on me well i only have like surface level knowledge so joker you will take off that damn button how's it gonna look if you get killed wearing a peace symbol vanish joker most ricky ticking take crafter man with you they're they're going into the [ __ ] is that did i use that parlance properly yes we'll see the dead have been covered with lime the dead know only one thing it is better to be alive you write born to kill on your helmet and you wear a piece but what's that supposed to be some kind of sick joke i think i was trying to suggest something about the duality of man sir son all i've ever asked of my marines is for them to obey my orders as they would the word of god been getting any only your sister feel better my sister and my mom my mom's not bad oh we're the lusthawk squad we're life takers and heartbreakers we shoot them full of holes and fill them full of lead is that the hero of canton that is the hero of cannon cinematically this is awesome like this it's almost kind of pov creep [Music] gonna need some chocolate milk after this i wanted to see exotic vietnam i uh i wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture and killed them jesus christ yeah eat gonada xanax and some chocolate milk [ __ ] doc where's the sniper [ __ ] murphy this is cowboy over hang on man hang on this music is [Music] we got the sniper okay let's get the [ __ ] out of here what about her [Music] i am so happy that i am alive i'm in a world of [ __ ] but i am alive and i am not afraid so that was full metal jacket overall thoughts feelings thoughts and feelings are two different things okay my overall thought was from a objective standpoint this is a phenomenal movie so full disclosure my brother is marine so that's i've actually been to paris island i watched his um i've got all i want to say is graduation i know that's wrong i'm sorry um but i don't really ask him a lot about the marines um just because i don't know war and junk freaks me out uh so uh which i think is a completely reasonable mindset to have but um it's kind of one of those things is like i don't want to know so i don't ask and this movie makes you think a lot of it makes you uh movie was very well made first and foremost that's kubrick vincent d'onofrio deserves so many awards i don't know how many he's got it's probably not enough because that his whole character just hurt me like i felt so bad for him and and like you know i mean like you see it you see it all happening you see you see the snap like you start to see the cracks um should have never been there in the first place damn that was just that was that was rough um well uh arleigh ermey the drill instructor okay uh he agrees with you from what i've read he said he thought uh vincent d'onofrio's performance was the best so i yeah i agree with that the the sm oh god this smile there see that's like this is like almost two separate movies in my mind like like that's a movie in and of itself like right there just the word i'm you're not alone in that though just gonna let you know like a lot of reviews i've read and it's just comment threads and things like that i've read and people see it as two halves yeah oh man oh and i said this during the movie at some point i don't know what vietnam was about i'm i was i was i was born in 86 so it happened well before me and i again more stuff yeah war stuff is never my jam so i just never really like i know we learned it in high school or something but it was probably one of those i learned it long enough to take the test and then i forgot it i gotta say i don't know his stance on it but i feel like mr kubrick does not care for war maybe specifically the the vietnam i think from what i've read in an interview with him he said this is not an anti-war movie okay he said i've already made my anti-war movie it was called past the glory said this is just a war movie okay let me ask you this what were you expecting to see when you watch this movie like what did you i i when you knew it was a war movie what came to your mind did you expect more of a narrative where it follows a band of soldiers yes knows them and they're like they're going on a mission and you know what that mission is yes i guess i was thinking kind of like glory you know because that's like the only other one like okay you you expect it to be more of a narrative yeah yeah very much so i'll just go back to kind of like overall objectively this is this is a great movie um subjectively i didn't i did not enjoy this movie uh well i guess it was aggie it was a well-made movie yes cinematography directing all that yes acting it did what it was supposed to do like but it's just not something that resonates with you yes exactly and i think that just comes it's just me in my my core you know it's like so many things that make this movie good are the things that i don't deal with well yeah this was a rough one for me i think i'm god the edit on this is going to be real tough because i didn't say very much um kind of sucked into it for a good yeah um it was this movie is an experience it's not something you watch it's something that you experience yeah like it felt not as much of a narrative just more of here you are in the middle of a war this is what it's like and and so and i think i've mentioned this at at some point there at the end when they were kind of like sort of scouting through the buildings after the the bombs went off kind of right there at the mines or whatever they were well it puts you in almost kind of that that pseudo pov uh kind of kind of take with the camera i feel like this is probably a good movie to discuss with people um but i definitely don't want to watch it again i get that uh one thing i have here is the score yeah the music i thought was used really well like for cowboy's death scene like it was just there was no music yeah there was no big swell of emotional music or anything like that it was just the sound of the soldiers and the sound the boar and the sound design and then then the sound when they were moving into the building where the sniper was the the drums yes the drawing like it's just building the intensity um i i thought the sound design in in general was like really well done there was a moment it was right after the one that cowboy took over for when he got blew up right before he did i remember thinking like right before he went to the booby trap like you could hear like the the clatter of like stone and everything as like the feet were kind of shuffling through and it was just dead quiet except for that and like the fire cry i don't know it just i just had a moment where i was like oh [ __ ] i'm i'm in this like i'm here so really just sound all over was really really well done one of the main things we could uh should talk about or note is the drill instructor marley ermey he uh i hope you leave it in the edit when i correct you he's not adrian yeah he will hit me he was in the military he was only supposed to be on the movie as a technical advisor but then you know cooper got it on hired him on for the part and yeah he you know hit everything out of his mouth like his whole character is just so highly quotable oh yeah well like as he was saying things you've you've heard that before i've heard that i've heard that oh my god and then some that i hadn't heard i was like cheer jesus that's so aggressive i can tell you all this 100 and like my brother knows this he's he's uh four years younger than me but i'm by far i don't do well with people being mean to me like to my face i would not make it in the military for multiple reasons but like i would i would like break down not even day one like like minute one i was like no absolutely not got off the bus and i screamed at you oh just weeping um i like to go home now i'm sorry where is my teddy bear oh you sweet summer child um but yet he was amazing do you have any more notes or anything else no i think we talked about most of everything through our conversation i guess the only thing left would be the rating okay so what would you rate for a metal jacket oh so this is one of those weird ones for me because you're trying to rate it on two different levels yeah you're trying to rate it from like a filmmaking standpoint and then from a personal standpoint how you enjoyed the film or not enjoyed the film from an objective point of view like i said cinematically sound casting uh i mean everything was it was executed very well this is a good movie and on that alone like i mean that's an that's an instant eight for me like that's a good movie is eight but because like i i don't know i would i would never willingly watch this movie again so because of that i'm gonna i'm gonna say this is this is a 6.5 for me remember it's an amazing movie yeah no i was i get you i understand like i was the same way when we watched uh the big lebowski mm-hmm i think it's a great great made movie but it's just not something that i particularly enjoyed like it didn't speak to yeah it doesn't resonate it doesn't resonate but it was well made well acted on it so that's i understand what about you yeah if i was going to give this one a rating i would say eight that's what first came to mind it's respectable for you yeah no i mean i i enjoy the movie i've seen it several times i wasn't expecting jane to be in this yeah you you did not see him coming i was so uh yeah i was not prepared but yeah so six point five and eight what's that yeah i think that's fair that's very fair i'm interested to see other kubrick films you've seen a couple um who dat with that none we've watched on the channel but you've seen the shining yes and you've seen a clockwork orange yes so i think i like both of those i think those are the only two others you have actually seen of his movies i highly doubt you've seen pat's glory no no um shucker well guys i i hope you enjoyed this um i'm glad that i've experienced it i'm glad that we have uh documented it um what are your thoughts on that yeah do you like it or not do you you know this name won't say mo yeah any uh behind the scenes stuff i know uh mr kubrick can be a uh very particular in his filmmaking i heard he could be a dick i guess it depends on who you ask i didn't actually hear that i was just making some assumptions based on what you said sorry um i just wanted to be a part of the conversation oh but yeah if y'all uh don't mind please go ahead and give the video a like uh as matthew said drop us a comment let us know some of your favorite parts um what would you rate it and what should be like what should the next kubrick film be that i watch i don't know make a suggestion let's make sure that they're on the list um if you haven't already please make sure to subscribe to the channel and stay up to date on all these summerlin related shenanigans and um if you have nothing else i'm good then we will see you all next time with another first time you
