this is Andrew he's going to be doing his mock driving test today he's already passed his driving test about a year and a bit ago a year and a couple of months and you passed just is that right the minimum uh the maximum number of faults how many votes 14. you have 15. oh you can have a 15. yeah so you're allowed a maximum of 15 16. ah here's a fail oh really I did pretty well then I hope I'm right about that I've never had someone have that many votes I've not had to worry about it I didn't teach you to drive did I did not um but why are you healing why do you want to mock test so yeah I I I figured after the last couple of years of driving I've done a lot of different countries for that stuff I haven't really driven a manual in a while I wanted to see if since that barely passing test I've gotten better or maybe it's gone the other way around I imagine most people get worse or less test standard as they go along so we're going to see uh if I'm now a more competent driver I can use that in my like oh I'm good now or if I'm a danger to everyone else on the road have you had any mishaps uh time on the road maybe I had a I might have hit a little bit of uh there was an accident recently uh the sign came at me at 10 miles per hour the insurance deemed the sign not at fault for some reason you know how those companies are the sign move the sign movements does it yeah uh it was a it was a nightmare and so yeah I I apparently that counts as a collision uh so now I've had one and I'd like to see if maybe I could avoid those in the future so I'll I'll watch you driving and I'll well I'll give you a mock test and tell you how you're done but I'm a driving instructor driving instructors can't do mock tests can they well they can do mock tests yeah you can do mock they can't do real tests I don't want to make this as real as possible so I want to get the examiner you can't have driving instructors do real tests because it will be corrupt wouldn't it I think you pass your own pupils I think it would be fine because like in theory you would have to be then liable for your bad pupils that go on to immediately you know like oh that's not something I'd want to live with you can't control what people do I I think the way you can take responsibility for what other people do particularly after you haven't seen them for so long yeah yeah my instructor's probably roll them in as not grave he's not dead but rolling in his bed like uh questioning like why did I let him on the roads or my neck examiner I guess maybe uh yeah it's uh I I think though that the system we have would be better if you did a lot of unsupervised driving and then did a test like I got my license and then drove a bunch in different countries and for my life I'm now eligible to drive any car in the UK that's like uh that's a different topic Food For Thought for another discussion I'm gonna go and get your driving examiner and he'll be with you soon you've already passed the eyesight test I have that's a good start isn't it right I have eyes they function pretty impressed this is fun I wasn't expecting this weather's pretty good today it's uh it's raining but like only a little bit we love that hair I'm Gavin nice to meet you Galvin what would you like me to call you today uh toy cat is my legal name toy cat toy cat okay like a cat but it's a toy bad parents you know how it is I hear you have a YouTube channel don't you is there something to do with that yeah name's the same thing uh crazy coincidence uh or you know I make geography videos that's why I needed to learn to drive because some countries you just can't you know um tell me what to do Mr Mr gubbin okay so would you like me to tell you about the test yeah go on then it's going to be between 38 and 40 minutes it's going to include some independent driving it's going to take in various Road and traffic conditions and I'm going to ask you to do a maneuver and it may include the emergency stop I now want to ask you a safety question how do you check your power steering is working or how do you know if there's a problem with your power steering it's probably a better way of phrasing it you turn the car on and if you feel too much resistance or it's like a like if it's easy to turn then it's on and if it's like spongy or it's really really hard you know your power steering's off we're going to start the test by following the sat nav if you're not following the sat nav during the test I would like you to follow the road ahead unless road signs direct you otherwise and if I want you to turn left or right I will tell you in plenty of time you okay yeah so you can move off when you're ready you can follow the Sat Nav Now okay let's do this it really does bring me back uh been a while since I've been in this situation this is a weird place to start just okay we're good blind spot checking the curbside blind spot after the important roadside blind spot can lead to a minor or serious Mark if the roadside blind spot check gets too old on this occasion the important check didn't get old enough to be likely marked on tests both ways let's go just coming out of character could you reduce the interval of wipers yep just because it will help the camera yeah yeah you get less distracting makes sense I'll go back to trying to be an examiner now so what would you be doing today if you weren't here looking at the examiner more than the road is not a good idea I would consider this a minor for awareness and planning also he doesn't check the center and left mirror to move back to his side of the road when he has finished passing these parked cars but as he moved back so gradually in my experience it's unlikely to be marked as a fault on this occasion yeah yes that is what examiners ask you've done your homework I have I thought it was just my examiner it ruins the the specialty when I learned it was everyone I thought he cared you know he was just making conversation no send to mirror check and I'm not sure if he checked his right mirror to move out or past these parked cars I'll keep my eye on him would you be examining if you weren't here today land is that how I should take that the next right onto Whitehall Road thank you leave a nice Gap in a quarter of a mile there's a roundabout take the first exit onto Haven Road please come off the clutch just for a bit of trivia do you know if those signs mean that something bad has happened or if that's a urban myth like off the top of your head Mr galbanon what sign uh the one the little it was like a tree stump with a little tiny Branch warning if you're a side road resting your foot on the clutch slightly is unlikely to be marked on test if it doesn't affect your control of the car but it will wear the clutch release bearing so I really want to tell him to come off the clutch but I can't however holding the clutch down for no reason is a problem you lose engine braking and you are not ready to accelerate when you go downhill this will put more heat into the brakes this was eight seconds of holding the clutch down for no reason at over 20 miles per hour if he was below 10 miles per hour and needed it down for control then that would be fine but at this speed it will very likely be a minor Mark for clutch oh the warning sign to say there's a road I'm not convinced he's checking his mirrors before signaling he did move his eyes very quickly but at that speed I think it's just going to be a blur and he's not going to notice if anything is there so there's a road on the right uh yeah like a site it could be on the left though yes oh yeah I mean serious accident um I believe that is a myth uh yeah thank you for confirming but I don't know yeah I can't find definitive proof it isn't it signs are to help you use the road yep um we don't do without signs until something serious happens yeah that was my thinking too like we have to wait for a serious accident to put up signs for something like but glad you have the same logic there he checked his mirrors but after signaling on a test this would likely be marked as a minor fault for use of mirrors signaling should have had my second one in 300 yards at the roundabout take the second exit onto Eastern approach oh to help with your planning you may find it easier to be in the right lane oh okay thank you very backed up roundabout makes this easy the roundabout onto Eastern approach and continue in the end this was my mistake I should have told him to exit in the right lane before he entered the roundabout 300 yards and the roundabout take the second exit onto Kong Causeway elmstead Road he was driving very close to and sometimes even on the lane divider line most of the way on this section of Road this is possibly bad enough to be a serious for positioning Lane discipline but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and I'm going to mark it as a minor but if it happens again then it will be a serious and you'll be exiting in the right lane again that's what's going to help you with your planning for later do you get marked down for ignoring helpful instructor advice like that or examiner advice like that or like you need to drive safely and legally look at no mirrors for leaving this roundabout it's a very narrow exit with two lanes and the possibility for a vehicle to be on his left he needs to be aware of what's there the roundabout onto calm Causeway blocked around up this Lorry is too close although it's not Andrew's fault he seems completely unaware of it and gets even closer to the Lorry as he proceeds forwards it's not until I go to take the wheel that he reacts and moves away this is definitely a series for awareness and planning if he was aware he has the option to position the car further away and he should be prepared to stop and let the Lorry go through the most narrow part of the road which is next to the traffic lights on its own if it looks like the Lorry isn't going to let us go first take the second exit onto Saint Andrews Avenue a133 no mirrors before signaling again that's another minor I've never seen anything like this before five in a row okay the same rules apply it look to the right once that's safe should have gone by the block early the right lane so I think I'm good no I'm not oh and then I want to get into the right lane again 50 yards a green stead roundabout take the second leg space onto klingo Hill a133 I used the Dual control brake because Andrew seemed unaware of the speed limit he was accelerating quickly and already four miles per hour over maybe a verbal instruction could have been enough but he is on camera and he is speeding so I'll do my best to protect him it's not a 50 until he passes the sign and as he seemed unaware of this at that time it's definitely a serious for use of speed just gonna slow down a little bit they're going over the speed of it the 50 starts after thank you he is driving on the lane divider line again that minor from earlier is now a serious for positioning Lane discipline yeah it's a bad habit I've gone into like see the sign that's the speed you've got to go but it's the speed you go after the sign this is a dual carriageway and Andrew has stayed in the right lane when he was not overtaking I did not ask him to use this Lane to help with his planning however he already has a series for Lane discipline so I can't mark this in a quarter of a mile turn right onto Colchester Road b1028 the clutch please come off the clutch turn right onto Colchester Road we can stop for this amber light safely there's enough time it may be possible that we cross the white line before the lights turn red but that's not how it's marked on test Amber means you must stop unless doing so may cause a collision I gave him as much time as possible then took action and stopped the car myself this is a serious for response to signals traffic lights the road b1028 looking back at the footage we may have just made it across the line before they went red but that's not how it's dealt with on test it's whether or not you can stop by the line safely when it goes Amber been somewhere much longer yellow lights recently signal for one mile I'm gonna assume the limit is 60 here because it's National speed limit but it's not your carriage but there's a like this uh the women before he got fourth gear instead of second gear but he did correct it without causing danger so this is unlikely to be marked however throughout the drive so far he has been quite jerky and gear Choice has often been too low also he is resting his foot on the clutch most of the time I'm not going to mention every time he has poor car control as it's too often but at the end of the test I will decide if his car control skills are smooth enough to meet the standard so far though he is too jerky for me to allow him to use my car on a real test in 300 yards at the roundabout continue straight onto the cross b1028 in 300 yards you will arrive at your destination this is just the Waypoint okay so continue to follow the road ahead please definitely no Center and right mirror to move out for the part cars so that's another Miner for mirrors change direction so continue following the sat nav please okay again no mirrors for moving back to his side of the road and he moved back a bit more quickly this time so I would judge that's another minor for mirrors change direction weird villagers like this very intriguing he checks the right mirror after he started moving out to pass the parked car that's too late so another Miner for mirrors change direction also I've paused the video here because he should give priority to the oncoming car he has not already committed to pass the park cars and he can't see a gap in the cars further up where he could wait so he takes the priority from the oncoming car and makes them wait as the oncoming car isn't moving and waits Patiently I don't consider this dangerous or potentially dangerous therefore it won't be a dangerous or serious mark But A minor Mark for judgment meeting if the oncoming car would have acted differently this could have easily been a serious mark it goes to show that luck does play a part in the driving test no mirrors for moving back to his side of the road here so another Miner for mirrors change direction I should try and flash back all that but I appreciate it again no mirror checks to move back to his side of the road I've seen enough now to conclude that he normally doesn't check the relevant mirrors at the relevant time when changing direction so this is now a serious Mark for mirrors change direction for the remainder of the test I will no longer mention this driving fault I paused the video here to give myself time to finish explaining the mirror check faults without driving past the next fault he gets uncomfortably close to the curb here without needing to that's a minor for position normal driving yeah I don't think that's too wide we're good I recommended next Road left the sat nav hasn't said but you need to take this road on the left with the lights yeah he didn't check his Center left mirror before signaling left that's his third minor fault for mirror's signaling I said I wouldn't mention any more driving faults for mirrors change direction but mirror's signaling is a different fault with a different box on the test report turn left onto Rebo road then turn right onto Park Road turn right onto Park Road Valley Road free faults here another Miner for Mirror signaling that's four now but from this moment onwards look where he looks and look where I look this was his last check ahead to give way to oncoming cars from around that bend he has committed to make the turn too early when a car could come from around the bend that he would need to give way to also he starts to drive in the middle of this narrow road which will block oncoming cars what he should have done here he's driven forwards keeping it in his side of the road until he got to his point of turn which is near the middle of the road that he is turning into then check ahead for oncoming cars by which time he would be able to see further around that bend and then commit to Turning across the path of oncoming traffic into the road on the right this is potentially dangerous so it's a serious Mark for observations at Junctions which is the most common was a failing of the driving test in Great Britain and a serious Mark for position normal driving as he was driving too much in the middle of the road take the next left onto Valley Road then continue straight onto bobbitt's way no mirror checks when signaling again that's his fifth minor for mirrors signaling continue straight onto bobbitt's way yeah I'm really joking on the clutch today in 200 yards you will arrive at your destination is this another Waypoint or is this the destination okay thank you he doesn't slow down early enough to allow the oncoming car to finish passing the parked cars without pressure or stress the oncoming car was already committed before we saw each other and needs space to finish passing this is his second Miner for judgment meeting picked up a bit too much speed there and just after this road on the left if you could pull over at the sun arrived okay no mirrors before slowing down to stop at the side of the road this is a minor Mark for mirror's change of speed it could have been a serious if there was a car behind or he slowed down sharply there are three separate faults for Mirror checks on the test mirrors change of Direction mirrors signaling and mirrors change of speed he already has a serious Mark for mirror's change of Direction but this is his first minor Mark for mirror's change of speed usually this fault is only given for significant unexpected changes of speed such as stopping at the side of the road or traveling at a constant speed then suddenly accelerating let them know to be fair I used the Dual control brake to protect my tires and wheels but Andrew was imminently about to hit the curb fast enough to mount it and he was looking backwards so clearly wasn't going to avoid it on a real test they let you hit the curb which is one of the many reasons I only allow people to use my car on test if I trust their driving you may get away with a gentle brush of the curb but hitting it this hard at this angle will be a serious Mark for position normal stops Andrew now has a serious Mark for all of the available position faults on the driving test in Great Britain just hit the curb here okay oh I was using the Gap thing I was like oh there's that much space on there Mirror Works when you're going backwards glad I'm learning that now okay that makes useful okay if you can secure the car please into neutral and become that off okay I'm gonna switch the cameras on and off because they turn off after 20 minutes right camera's back on set up back into examiner mode you can continue to follow the sat nav when you're ready let's do this are we good to go I think we are good to go oh it's a car now but it's still left it too late didn't leave it too late at all notice how Andrew doesn't look behind again after his blind spot checks so his look behind is starting to get old now nearly three seconds also he started moving a bit before he checked his right blind spot I feel he's trying to observe to please The Examiner instead of trying to make sure it's safe to go I would advise making sure it's safe from behind using the relevant mirrors then checking the relevant blind spot usually just the roadside blind spot will be enough for moving away from the side of the road but you can check both if you wish and then a quick check of the mirrors again to make sure no one's coming and then go so that your look and your most important look which is behind cars coming from behind is up to date I would say this would be a minor for move off safety one spot check quarter of a mile turn right onto rectory Hill oh okay his speed and position means that he will have to break hard if there is a vehicle coming from ahead he can't see past the parked cars so he should position himself early to the right to improve his View and be slower so that he is ready to give way to the oncoming Vehicles without breaking sharply this would be a minor for awareness and planning but as he already has a serious for that it will not be recorded this is a 20 Zone From This Moment it's clear that the silver car is not giving way to us as it should so Andrew needs to slow down to let the car through and he's already covering the break he actually does a good job here he could do better though if he slowed down more so that we didn't get so close to the silver car I can't believe it he's off the clutch on this right hand Bend he ended up in the middle of the road he steered too much as a very common fault for new drivers but he's already got a serious Mark for position normal driving the next right onto Ray Mond again he gets close to an oncoming vehicle yes the van should give way to us but that's no excuse for Andrew to get close to them when there is an option to slow down more and leave more space another minor for judgment meeting Hill then turn left onto kela's Lane I think it's now clear that he doesn't check his mirrors before signaling as part of his General driving so now it's a serious for use of mirrors signaling I'll no longer mention this fault for the rest of the test very blind Junction yeah foreign [Music] quite late so I thought I'd help you thank you continue on keeler's Lane for half a mile get off the clutch oh thank you what is that bird okay oh pheasant a male pheasant I believe cute the colorful ones are male and the ones that are a bit more bland and with that many colors they're the females it's often the case in a quarter of a mile turn right onto Thai Lane as often how it is with birds colorful ones or the the males yeah that's the funny thing about birds it's the men who have to do the throughout this road he hasn't really exceeded 30 miles per hour and it's a 60 mile per hour limit now we don't expect him to do 60 down here but there are plenty of places where he could have gone faster than 30 possibly around about 40 miles an hour in my experience this would normally be a minor for appropriate speed yes it's a bent a bent this therefore probably I don't know it's actually going to be it okay the next right onto b1027 then turn left one of those fun angled ones too it's a good Gap here it's good that you drove around the puddle Google says the speed limit is 60. next Road left then turn left onto School Road she's telling you late so I thought I would help again a narrow Lanes take the next left onto School Road then you will arrive at your destination a bit more of a jerky stuff than I would have liked it was a jerky stop because he started to go before he realized the car was coming I was about to use the brake myself and please have arrived continue to follow the sat nav it's just another Waypoint okay is it school hours right now yeah it probably is actually the speed limit sign has a red border the sign with the green border is advisory I don't know if this particular school but I'll just guess therefore it's a 20 Zone he stops too far back from the line at the junction so he can't see properly this actually causes him to miss his first opportunity I've had pupils marked down for this on test before but I can't remember what box the examiners tick on the report if you know let me know in the comments that's better he's at the line now and can see [Music] another great one the pedestrian's body language are staying far back from the curb is telling me that they want to let the traffic clear before they attempt to cross there should be a section on the theory test of when to wave it's a okay I probably might yeah we got this very similar situation to my crash funnily enough I've learned not to go on the grass hollyway didn't wave at them mistake get a politeness fault for that turn left onto hollyway then you will arrive at your destination there's no such thing as a fault for not waving and when it's safe please find somewhere to pull over on the left on the left in a safe place okay I'm gonna I was going all the way to the panel right but I see why that's uh so I'm giving you directions now yeah continue driving until you find somewhere safe okay technically these are all cut curbs which makes me oh thank you not losing it there are two faults with how he is about to park he stops behind the red van which means he's significantly closer than 10 meters from The Junction on the left the highway code advises not to stop within 10 meters of a junction whether or not this is a serious or minor Mark depends on how much danger he is causing and I judge that he stops so close to the junction that he increases danger to Road users at the junction due to the lack of view I would mark this as a series for position normal stops but he already has a series for this so I can't mark it also when he stops he doesn't check his mirrors or signal there are cars on the other side of the road so a signal is necessary however I wouldn't Mark the signal here I would mark it as a minor for mirrors change of speed but if there was a car close behind him it would have almost certainly been a serious Mark for Mira's change of speed so luck was on his side this time there was a place he could have stopped when I initially asked him but to be Fair it wasn't an easy place so if he missed it he should have continued driving until he found a suitable Place continue when you're ready let's do it note reverse Cam that means use your eyes like you meant to after that's carrying the handbrake yeah it's probably enough space to then redo the checks after him in first oh a big Convoy come in fruit do a recheck now much better observations this time he waits until it's safe to go from behind and in front does a quick blind spot check then uses his mirror to quickly check behind to make sure the situation hasn't changed although checking the blind spot is important checking behind is far more important the vast majority of the time this is where the danger is coming from and should be up to date it should be the final check thank you next Road left it's a woman and a dog maybe they're Crossing but they're not and there's a puddle which I shall avoid to stay out unless there's an indication it shouldn't wide end of Road left gotcha sorry end of road right I meant right I don't know why I said left my fault a bit of driving instructor fault now yeah I sometimes do that I think one thing and say another nice and slow because it's big now let's go end of road right it's all behind me so I'll signal signaling at Junctions is nearly always needed because often you can't see the other road until you get close to it so you don't know if your signal is going to benefit others again he stops too far back from the line which means he can't see left or right properly to see if it's safe to go I think I've got some space ahead of me yeah I really need my notes a little further and I think is safe but I won't do it again check again and we're good stay at 13 until the sign this time and let's go high speeds like this are when Manual's fun like this is when you can feel control by Switching gears but you're not messing up by meaning the wrong one I like it stay at 60 though he just implied that he thinks the speed limit is 60. it's a dual Carriage weight so it's 70. I think when you're cruising at 70 miles an hour or what speed you're cruising at that's when you're not using the gears on the contrary I guess yeah when you're like I guess getting up is when you use the gears and then staying there you don't use the gears at all yeah it's a good point but usually when you are top speed I find that's when you have to slow down the traffic then re-speed up and fit into gaps but maybe I'm driving on busier roads I think it's harsh but usually if my pupil only does 60 miles per hour on this 70 road The Examiner gives them a minor for appropriate speed but as they're standing water on the road at the moment I'm not going to mark it it was Britain's oldest recorded town but it became a city about a year ago yeah I assumed it wasn't a city because the station's called Colchester town but I guess that's a legacy feature not a on a current one I'd have been better coming a little bit slower to these lights because then I could have had some speed coming into this it may not come across on camera but throughout the test his manual car control has been jerky examiners are very lenient about this but I think he's been consistently bad enough throughout the whole test that he would probably end up with a serious Mark for clutch foreign watch out for Mr scooter just in case we're good probably kind of moved over helped him out no excuse for poor driving I've never seen a sign before that just says Don't drive bad that's fun it says please drive carefully I didn't I just saw no excuse for yeah I guess they said don't drive bad it said uh no excuse for driving bad it might have said something else it just said that's all I read from National highways so I didn't read that sign was that the digital one no it was a like a blue sign it was it wasn't an informational sign okay probably should be focusing on the roundabout stuff but are you gonna tell me one of these places I'd like you to go left at both of them okay thought I was not in first but I am just give the car a little burster first can you show me how to clean the rear window I could so on this car it's going to be the win stick but push forwards there we go okay thank you to them that there's a blocker so we're good at the roundabout ahead second exit second exit is a straight head which means either Lane I think there's only one lane on his exit and there's no signs or Road markings to say he needs the right lane to go ahead so he should use the left lane as he does a bit late with his signal to leave at the roundabout please go ahead second exit so there's no Lane markings so I'm gonna again assume second I mean left there are two lanes on this roundabout and he goes in the middle of both but the lines have completely faded about left oh first exit because he doesn't think about when to commit to the traffic lights on his approach he waits until they change and then he is left floundering as to whether he should stop he should be making his decision as he approaches the lights so when they change he already knows what to do first exit because first exit it's definitely going to be a left lane unless it's a very strange roundabout what champions of pedestrians slow down they're on my side but I'm being polite until I don't need to be and we're still good we're still good he dealt with those hazards very safely mini roundabout right gotcha his signal was very late for this mini roundabout so that would be a minor for signals timed probably would be a bit better in the first there a bit more power delivery he has been in a gear too low most of the way up this hill he could easily be in third gear examiners are lenient with gear choice but I think he was in a gear too low for so long on this occasion that he would get a minor for control gears mini roundabout right [Music] staying nice and back there's no benefit to going faster here if you could pull over on the left after this black car please okay can do precisely that and move away when it's safe please okay I think it would be better to Signal here because it's hard to see who's coming I do like the way he observes though he's genuinely trying to see if it's safe to go instead of moving his head to please me and where the temporary traffic lights are I would like you to take that road on the left okay all right interesting parking situation up here lots of let them pass he slows down a bit late for this parked van he can see the oncoming cars before the previous Bend if he slowed down earlier it would have made the bend more comfortable he did get quite close to the curb on that left Bend and he could have reached the van by the time the oncoming cars were gone instead of breaking when he was close watching it back it doesn't look too bad but it didn't feel very comfortable when I was sitting in the car poor planning foreign this is the permanent crack in the middle here it's like there's been an earthquake second Road right this is the first it's very close together here I see that pull over on the left after these two cars do not worry about the driveways okay again no mirrors before pulling over and he parks on the pavement he already has a serious Mark for position normal stops so I'm not going to mark that but it is another Miner for mirrors change of speed continue when you're ready please let's do it together ready to go he manages to heal start without rolling back turning so fine next road on the left just after this row of parked cars on the left Stalin or a fun name next Road right and if you can pull up before the blue car as you pull into the road again just doesn't check his mirrors before pulling over he's been doing that throughout the whole test now so it's a serious for mirrors change of speed that'll do that thank you okay this is where I'm going to ask you to do your maneuver I would like you to pull up alongside that blue car and reverse park behind behind it finishing within two car lengths of the car and close to the curb okay wondering why I'm holding steep the seat belt is because it keeps making that noise and a little bit wide it might be coming across on microphone and being annoying when I'm on the bumps on the smooth roads it's not so bad okay continue when you're ready I did my first parallel test since the past first parallel park since the test recently so I'm fresh and ready on this whoo I guess I should say parallel park into a tight space I feel like it's really just a reverse Park normally foreign spot was way too late there so that's a minor for move off safety all right looks like I have oh maybe a bit too close though yeah I've heard it now but it's fine you can easily just fix that with a little straightforward time I leave it as late as possible to look round to check it's safe so I'm not prompting him he checks after I do which is too late I think he only checks because he sees me do it I know I have to turn too close to that yeah a little closer comfort maybe you don't need to be but just start that whole thing again ah the steering wheel's turned all the way gotcha okay I used the brake there because it felt like you're about to hit the curb quite hard yeah there's a that was something he doesn't always check both blind spots and behind before going backwards so this would likely be a series for observations and he made the same mistake twice of adding too much angle which has led to too many movements and too much time to finish this maneuver also it looked like he was about to hit the curb harder than I would allow so I used the brake to protect my car he would very likely get a serious for control yeah if I had two callings of space I should have just used it rather than getting this close huh a bit closer will the beeping stop if I'm out of gear or is it it's not gonna pay that's it okay okay that's the end of your test okay um I'll get Richard back to talk to you about the debrief okay I'm gonna get this off because I'm a bit afraid it's making noise okay so I'm back and um yeah this other guy was awful I had the worst hair like have you seen his nose like it was oh my my examiner today you would not like him if you met him okay I think his name was gubbin actually while I was watching the test and I'm gonna debrief you there I'm gonna be honest and take this off try not to take this uh personally because I like to be straightforward yeah I don't like to beat around the bush if you were my pupil you would not be going to test um you can watch back the video yeah I'll I'm excited to yeah and I'll go over every problem there was on the drive there's quite a few my brain I I writing it down I'm not going to remember them all so I'm going to try and go back to the test now and I'm going to try and pick out the main problems the first thing that comes to my mind though is you don't drive manual cars very often can you tell from the jerkiness maybe I don't think the control you had over the manual car I I've never had someone fail for lack of control of the manual car you know the examiners are quite lenient on you being jerky they're quite lean if you ride the clutch a little bit rarely do you might get a minor for Gears or a minor for clutch but you are so jerky and you're burning the clutch so much giving too many revs when you're moving away and then doing that as the car gets going I don't think you would pass for that one I've never had someone fail for that so I don't really have a barometer to go oh yeah if you're this bad that's normally a fail that is worse than I've ever taken someone a test they'll be better at driving the manual car than that and it's clear that you've obviously got to that standard haven't driven for so long and that standard has waned I'm going to start from the end and go back through the test okay let's do it so the park at the end here you wouldn't have gotten that long on a test oh really I thought you had unlimited timers no oh really it's not unlimited time it's not unlimited attempts and but there isn't really much of a limit anyway it comes down to the examiner but you kept adjusting and you weren't really improving things now if you came in a bit sharp and that's what you did you put too much angle on and then you come out and then tried less angle next time fair enough but you did too much angle you come out you did too much angle you did the same mistake again and you're steering a lot when the video's over I'm going to give him some help with I'll give him some help to help you parallel park because you basically putting too much angle on change that you're trying to get it in a tiny space space it's smaller than what you know small in the car you're coming in too steep you're going to hit the curb or you're going to hit the car it's going to be one or the other yeah yeah um mirrors mirrors for changing directions so you sent a left mirror and you sent the right mirror I sort of gave up watching you after a while definitely a serious because you're missing so many of them and I think let's see if you're gonna check if he hasn't so I don't know how many you didn't check it's gonna be a lot and I think in the edit I might not mention all of them because it would be just get a bit repetitive but you're not basically checking your mirrors before you signal sometimes I see you check your mirrors as you change direction yeah yeah that's the it's too late it's like uh confirming if I shouldn't do an emergency stop basically we're passing the parked car you start turning it before you pass the last part car in that queue you want to start thinking what's behind what's to the side of me and then you can start making your way back you're looking for cyclists mostly that's that's probably the the most likely problem you're going to have when you check your mirrors before you move back to your side of the road or before you move out when you're moving out though to go past the park hard to go to the right then you can have cars overtaking you it does happen it doesn't have often but it does um so that would be a serious as well let's go back in my head now I've got you to do the hill star you parked on the pavement I did you shouldn't park on the Pavements you pull up at the side of the road um don't pay attention to the drop curbs on this occasion but you shouldn't go on the pavement I should have treated it like it was a pavement even though yes okay the reason why I asked you to do that is because you need to do the hill start and there was a hill there it's ran out of places and I thought well we can do it there and examiners will sometimes get you to stop outside someone's driveway or to stop on your lines just to stop and start to do the angle start or to do the hill start so I wanted you to do the he'll start there it was a flat curb it wasn't a raised curb now if that was a raised curb you would fail okay as it's a flat curb I've had pupils get away with it if they've parked on a flat curb when the examiner said you can stop next to the driveway don't worry and they bumped up the curb just gone on a flat bit you probably would have got away with that to be fair okay going back further now there's so many faults planning this come up quite a few times so your speed approaching hazards is too high sometimes for example if there's a parked car on a Bend and you can't see past that parked car you want to be slowing down at a rate where if you need to wait you're not going to have to brake hard and there's been occasions where you're a bit too fast and I feel like if someone's coming just out of view we're going to have a problem we're gonna have to break on it happened around here in a different way it happened when you could actually see we were going around the right hand Bend there's a parked car at the side of the road and there's oncoming cars and me as a driver sitting here I want to be slowing down towards that part car but I'm not feeling that so I'm starting to feel nervous I'm like well we're going around this corner quite quick it's quite a sharp Bend as well it's quite a narrow road so keeping it in your lane take some skin I think oh he's going to turn too early and knock the curve no he didn't he just about got it around there but then we sort of get to the car and then we have to slow down all that time I'm uncomfortable you're going around the bend a bit too quick and we're approaching a park car on the bend and at one point I'm thinking is he gonna wait behind that Parker or is he going to go around with that oncoming car who's committed already coming through so you need a bit more foresight yeah but there's a hazard up there approach it so that the hazard is gone when you get there not approach it so that you have to break when you get there yeah there is some real planning for certain situations with the one lane basically where you've got to work out like whose Lane is it right now like uh that I just don't have wired in me anymore like learner for the test because you're not an experienced driver um before I forget there was another one you get close to the left often and that is how you had your Collision yeah yeah actually yeah I feel nervous when you're driving sometimes because there's no benefit to being close to the left and you put us close to the left there's a bus stop next to us I don't know why is he trying to talk to you nope looking him straight ahead thankfully oh I think he's probably there's something up I can't see it's probably something happening up there and he's waiting for it now he's a learning car parallel parking funnily enough yes so if there is room for one car take that room um a good example is when there are parked cars on the left oncoming cars waiting for you to finish passing the parked cars you get near the pot cars so now we've got the added danger of being near the hazard of the parked car it can open its door people can walk out and no need to be near it yeah also you're encouraging the oncoming cars to come through when they're waiting for you you don't need to get out take that space there waiting for you say thank you I'm adding two wrists I don't have to I you don't have to say thank you and I said so Faker that that's not that important oh that was on this phone it's good just to put your hand up and say thank you because it it eases people people like that and take that space instead of adding danger if you need to get near the park only get near the park car if you need to and if you need to reduce your speed my advice is if you're closer than half a doors with if you're closer then half a meter you should be around 10 miles an hour bottom of second gearish around that sort of speed 10 miles an hour if you're that close to park cars your responsibility you should be ready for doors to open and people just step out now whether or not you get in trouble if that happens well that all comes down to the court doesn't it yeah yeah but that's not the point the point is if you're responsible you're thinking there's a risk there I'm gonna try and reduce the risk instead of well whose fault would it end up being if I took this all the way and yeah you want to avoid collisions as a whole you don't want to just avoid your problems so don't be near hazards at speed and don't be near hazards when you don't need to be and it's a very typical thing that new drivers do they go left they see oncoming cars they see problems their instinct is to go left that is why you ran off the road as well yeah you should have stopped or you should have stopped move off the road slowly and carefully stop wait for the oncoming cars to come from that narrow road and got back out on the road and go instead of going left and keep the car moving over the slippery surface and then the car lose doesn't have the tracking to get back out onto the road I've only done four mock test videos this is my fourth the second one with Becca a similar thing happened there was an oncoming car on a narrow Country Road she needed to slow down and wait at a wider part of the road but she didn't she turned the car off and well scared me as she very close very close to damage my car she didn't but she went in a big hole and it was just a scary experience didn't need to be overall there's other faults I don't know if I want to spend long even longer going through them all you can watch the video back you've watched I'm excited so I'm gonna end going through the faults there I want to see what I look like I'll probably look at it and be like what was I doing there like in oh so you're positioning yourself left when there's multiple Lanes now you're not going to see that on camera because the camera doesn't quite show you exactly the position of the car but there were multiple Lanes at some point where I was asking you to use The Right Use the right lane and you were staying left okay like your your wheel was sometimes on the line um I made an error because I told you to use the right lane early on in the test and I forgot to tell you to exit in the right lane until you started exiting that's my fault I'll hold my hands up to that and I said continue in the right lane so you were sort of halfway between the two lanes before I said that because at that at those roundabouts at that Junction you really need to get to the right lane early if you don't yeah you don't gotcha so that's why I said get in the right lane what I'd normally do is tell you okay when you're leaving the roundabout stay in the right lane as you leave because that then helps you with those too many roundabouts you said there's five in the row but you're only doing two yeah there's too many roundabouts when you're turning right but when you did turn right at those mini roundabouts you then left in the right lane you accelerated hard to the point where I had to use the Dual control brake because you're accelerating so hard it's like 34 already and this feels like we're going to be 50 before the sign I can't allow that amount of speeding yeah yeah to use the brake but you should be in the left lane there now because there is a dual carriageway I appreciate you're confused because I've told you use the right lane I've been telling you to use the right lane as you've left the roundabout but if I haven't told you that you should then default to the left lane on Dual carriageway unless you're overtaking and then later on you would have found out you needed the right lane to go right that would be a fail on a test if you stay in the right lane all the way down there that is a fail what's the legal distinction between like a city road where you can use the right lane whenever you feel like it and the Dual carriageway when does it become it's ridiculous yeah right when's the it's totally ridiculous there is um there's two roundabouts in Colchester with a Road between them as a dual carriageway it's not very long at all it probably takes you 10 seconds to do the whole road yet I've had people fail for staying in the right lane of that dual carriageway and to add insult to injury when you leave the roundabout it forces you into the right lane and then you have to take that initiative to change back to even if you're later going to go straight back to the right well you don't know that you guys soon you're going ahead unless I tell you to go left and right so you should be in the left lane I say it's ridiculous because it's not much time there but on a legal level if you knew were going right yeah distance where it has to be right if it's this long you'd get away with staying in the right lane but I feel that they the examiners are too strict on that one I have to say that is overall a thing I don't totally agree with and I may be doing a video about that later see you can't do this because it's like a little bit uh you know like a vein but obviously like subscribe turn on the notifications you've been watching this long and you haven't subscribed and another one that I need to uh I mention before I miss is I had to break at the traffic light yeah yeah that one that's like a that's one of those things where it's so obvious in retrospect that like okay orange light this second if you can stop you must stop stop if you can we could stop we can stop fairly easily if you stopped when they changed when we approached lights I'm thinking we need to stop we need to stop we need to stop and when we get so close I just think we need to go we weren't near my cut off so therefore I gave you a bit of time to break and I then had to break if it was near my cut off I'll let you go through there but it wasn't and that's what an examiner would do a real examine on a real test if they think you can stop and you can stop easily they will take the Break um it's a difficult one to do because they don't want you going over the line when it's red where do you draw that line it's a difficult decision a difficult situation if you're at high speed that would have been fine to ignore the lights that far back that's what I say ignore the lights when you get a certain distance but you're doing a lot slower you'd slow down towards it you could stop by that line there wasn't a doubt in me when they change it's like yeah we're stopping oh he's not stopping Then I then I had to stop you um so I think you I can't be sure about this but I think you may have breaked as well when I braked yeah I was I was because I was on the the borderline of like I've got to decide I didn't want to stop that hard I I yeah but you know I wanted to break a bit less but I could be wrong there actually from memory because remember I felt you on the break which means I was either hovering I was on it I can't take it memory is fading for me already on that one I have to watch it back I got a real fear of being rear-ended when you decide to stop on the yellow I was afraid you can make it rear-ended there I was definitely afraid of being rearranged because you haven't break later but obviously I can't allow you to break the law yeah yeah um if you braked earlier it would be safer overall though you need to drive this is the problem if you pass your driving test and don't drive and don't have a car your skill Fades when you pass your driving test you have tens of hours of practice do you know how many hours of practice you had 40. it was a yeah it would be 35 maybe okay that's not a lot that noisy noisy bite go past first so you're gonna start forgetting your skill very quickly if you learn something for tens of hours it doesn't stick that's why it's important when you pass your test it's important to get a car and start driving it as soon as you can when you've been driving for a couple of years then if you take a break a long break and come back to it it's there but in my experience people who pass the test and don't drive lose their skill and it's one of the dangers on our road because they're legally allowed to drive but they've forgotten tonight 40 years and I'm still able to drive right my other half waited 13 years she hadn't got a clue how to drive she didn't know those three Peppers actually you know to be fair she knew there was free pedals but she didn't know which pedal was which they all look so similar there I mean I know I had to help her um and give her it was basically like teaching a beginner again after 13 years past a test not not driven she's a good thing she has you then if she hasn't driven in 13 years well it's an advantage boyfriend decision there well we were together for four years before I gave her a lesson make sure you know make sure she isn't uh you know with me for make sure she doesn't have ulterior motives okay well that's that's the end of the debrief um I know you take my license away and say well you should know that that's the thing that's the danger there's plenty of people who are allowed to drive who have forgotten how to drive and there's no system in place to fill them out I think the only reason why there's no system in place is because it's not a big enough issue many of those people are sensible take it on their own account to get refresher lessons and get training but if they're unsafe on the road I don't drive them unsafe some don't um but the number of accents that are caused by that I guess I don't actually know is probably not high enough for them to take action but is there a statistic to say well how many how how much experience does this driver actually have not how many years have I had the license but how many hours have they had behind the wheel I don't think so I don't think we record that statistic yeah enlightening to know how many accidents are caused by people who have minimal hours experience even though they've had license for a long time all right could I ask a spicy question so do you think off drivers who have been driving for years maybe you've got your license you've dreamed for five years don't you think a lot of those people would fail a driving test though because the driving test and good driving like I think I'm bad of both like I'm always trying to improve but I I would say the majority of people would fail simply for their following distance to the current front I mean if you drive on a Motorway most cars have a one second gap between them and the car in front that is not scary to the point where if you're keeping more of a gap people get angry with you so right there that's one thing where an experienced driver would fail but they wouldn't fail for skill and I don't think it would be too hard for most of them to pass with a little bit of tuition because it's not skill yes they say bad habits but a lot of the habits they believe are bad aren't actually a problem there's many things that driving instructors tell pupils because the driving instructor wants the pupil to do it not because they have to do it and then they think well I've got to do this to pass a test you've got to be safe and legal and if you're driving safely and you're following the law and following the highway code you should pass following the car in front Too Close isn't safe and that's a very fairly um Universal thing that you see yeah yeah particularly lorries Lorry drivers how close they get to each other they they get so close to each other that the Lorry behind flashes their lights to tell the Lorry that's overtaken that there's room for them to pull back in if one of them needs to break hard it's uh they're hitting each other aren't they there's you can't stop in time if I drive in front of you and you're one second behind me and I slam the brakes on you would probably hit me before you hit the brakes because from 70 say if I slam the brake on as hard as I can in dry conditions in one second I am going to be doing around about 40 miles an hour 35 no no 45 40 miles an hour something like that in one second now you're gaining on me yeah you've got a at quite some rate I think that's right and what's the math so say about 25 minus 70 that's 45 but I thought about the maths there too if you're both going 70 when you break you have the same time to break it no no if you both broke up who has the head start they've got down now to say 45 you'll still do 70. one seconds pass uh I see what you're saying they're always ahead of you you're doing 60 while they're at 40 you're doing 50. you're catching them so it's like it's like this it's like they slow down you're catching all the time and you hit and you're hitting the car in front with a 25 miles an hour speed difference is quite significant but it's not just that it's then the car behind that car smash the car behind that car and that's where the injuries really start to pile up that's why it's important to keep that distance so wait with a two second Gap you don't have two seconds of time to hit the brake you have like a second two second Gap is still pushing it oh okay if you followed me at two seconds and I slam the brakes as hard as I can you would have to be paying attention real good attention to make kit and most drivers aren't and that's just because we're human we might look at the speedo we might look at the speed uh the um the mirrors there's all sorts of things we might look at that takes another second which is why I do advise longer than two seconds and I do generally keep longer than two seconds when I'm driving at speed when you get really low speed obviously you're not thinking about that say like in traffic yeah you don't just trying to you have near instant stopping distances so you don't need to worry if it's even at 30 miles now I'd still keep a minimum two second Gap I'm talking about stop start traffic anyway I think I should end the video here because the time on that deep oh my oh that is a long debrief it's going to be a good one though yeah right I might have to actually end it here and then do my sponsor thing it's not really a sponsor affiliate marketing if you found the video interesting please give it a thumbs up and if you're looking for car insurance check out the links to Collingwood and Confused in the description if you're learning to drive and want to insure yourself on somebody else's car then Collingwood are there for you because you can do so without
