One of the unique skills we have
is the ability to dream. Because of dreams, a lot of amazing things
have been done and have come true
in this world. Just like the technology
behind telephones, computers, and televisions. Tonight, as part
of ABS-CBN's celebration for the 60th year
of Philippine television, <i>MMK </i>brings you a story
from somebody familiar to us who dreamed
and struggled because of it. This is the story
of Joan Panopio. <i>We continue to wake people up,</i>
<i>come rain or shine,</i> <i>-from Monday to Friday.</i>
-[Joan] Hurry! [Korina] <i>Maricon will be there,</i>
<i>as well as Emil, Eder,</i> <i>Beng, and Lynette.</i> <i>All of us will give you</i>
<i>hard-hitting news...</i> Hey, AMA, stop squeezing in.
We got here first. -What did you call me?
-AMA! Because you're
A Miserable Appearance! [laughter] You're AMA! You're AMA now! [Joan screams]
A hairy caterpillar! [boy] Where? Where?
Get it off! Step on it! Where? Where? Where is it? <i>If nobody will complain,</i>
<i>nobody will get caught</i> <i>and nobody will be arrested.</i> Too bad.
We didn't get to watch the news. [Noli] <i>Hey! Wake up!</i> [woman on TV] <i>Hey!</i> We are here now
outside Miss Ising's house wherein my cousin and I
couldn't catch my idol on TV. Will we get to watch
the news tomorrow? We should stay tuned for that! Here at your service is the very beautiful
Jonalyn Panopio, -reporting live.
-[applause] -[Dad laughing]
-[man] Yay! -My daughter is a good reporter!
-[Joan] Dad! [laughs] So?
Should we go home now? -Let's eat.
-Do we have rice now, Dad? This corn is so delicious! The longer I eat it,
the more it tastes like rice. Don't worry,
harvest season is coming up. You know, if you guys
want to eat good food, study hard! So someday, you can find
a decent job. Don't be like your father and I. We're just farmers,
so we always struggle. Especially you, Nalyn.
Your grades are so low. Dear, you're actually smart,
but you're too lazy to study. Well, what do you do every day? You just play and watch TV
at our neighbor's house. What will happen to your life,
dear, if you keep doing that? But Mom, the reason
why I always watch TV is because I'm studying
how to be a reporter. She's talking back to me. She'll study hard, Juana.
Don't worry. And she's good with sports. See? She takes after me,
her body is strong. She might even get
a scholarship, right? -[Joan hums]
-Sports... Nalyn, I thought of something. I thought of a way
for you to eat rice. Mm-hm. You can do it. Okay? [laughs] [cheering] My daughter won!
Well, who wants to fight her? [men cheering] Hey, sweetie.
Can you still fight? You beat him up. -I can still fight, Dad.
-You can? Well, who's next? -[man 1] Here, here.
-[man 2] Here! No one's next. -We have a champion.
-[Dad] Yes! -It's Nalyn!
-[Dad yells] [all cheering] [Charo] <i>"Dear Charo...</i> <i>Even though life is hard</i>
<i>and some people mock me,</i> <i>I'm still happy</i>
<i>because of my beloved dad.</i> <i>He's the one who always tells me</i>
<i>that I'm pretty,</i> <i>that I'm great,</i> <i>and that I can take on anything.</i> <i>That's why I never got scared</i>
<i>of dreaming about anything."</i> -[boy] Nalyn! Myla's here.
-Oh! Myla, you're so pretty!
That gown really suits you. Thanks, Nalyn. Dear, come here,
let's fix your gown so you'll become prettier. Dad, I wish I can join
the procession, even if it's just once. I think it's fun
to wear pretty gowns. But I'm getting tired. I always just hold the arch. Don't worry, dear, you can join
the procession soon. And I'll be the one
to hold your arch. [chuckles] But why haven't I got to be part
of the procession until now? Is it because I'm ugly? What? Hey, Nalyn. You're not ugly. You're very pretty. But the people here like those
with a lighter complexion. So they get picked
most of the time. Do I only need to have
lighter skin, Dad? That's easy. [Dad laughing] Can I join
the procession now, Dad? You definitely can! [laughs] You look like an espasol. Fine, just don't forget
your big smile, okay? That's what makes you pretty. I'm sure of that.
They'll invite you to join then. Hey, dude. We have a problem. Myla can't come,
her allergies suddenly acted up. [man 2] What do we do?
Where can we find someone else? We only have a few hours left. What about
Miss Telma's daughter? I think she's too big. Julia can't fit Myla's gown. What do we do now? [clears throat] I'm right here. What if we choose her then? -[man 2] It could work.
-[woman] Right. [band music playing] Your gown fits me better, Myla. If I wore that, I won't look
like a rice cake. But since she's fairer
and from Manila, they chose her. It's fine, Nalyn. Who knows, next time,
they might choose you instead. Maybe my skin has gotten
too dark for them, Myla. I need to lighten my skin up! -What are you doing?
-[engine revving] Myla! Hop on, we'll drop you off
at school. Really, Miss Josie? All right, let's go.
It's free anyway. Oh, no, Nalyn! We still have a lot of private school students
to pick up. There won't be enough space
if you go. Miss Josie,
can't you really get her on? It's just for you, Myla. Besides, Nalyn
can't pay for this. It's fine, just get on. Get on. Hey, AMA wasn't allowed
on the jeepney. Why don't you
report about that now? You weren't allowed
on the jeepney because you looked
like a monster. [laughter] A monster! [Juana] Oh, come on, did you
really have to wait for me? It's easy to catch
sickness nowadays, too! I'm so ugly! [crying] [Dad] What's wrong, Nalyn? Dad, I don't want to be
like Korina Sanchez anymore. But why? You dream
of being a TV reporter, right? I want to see you on TV. This kind of face
can't be shown on TV. I look like
a monster! AMA! [sobbing] Who told you that, huh?
They'll get it from me. Dad, just tell me the truth. Earlier, I wasn't allowed
on the jeepney, even though both Myla and I
can't pay for it anyway. But Dad, why was Myla able
to get on for free? [sniffles] Dear... some people
are just really judgmental. Their standards of beauty vary. But they're not important. What matters is what me
and your mom think of you. And how you see yourself. For us, we see you as pretty. You're smart,
brave, understanding. We believe
that you can reach your dreams. But Dad... when I hear what they say,
I get hurt. -[sniffles]
-[clicks tongue] I'll let you in on a secret. Hmm? When you hear
something unpleasant... it'll go through
your right ear, okay? So let it out of your left! -Hmm?
-What goes in the right ear... Yes, that's right. -...goes out the left.
-Mm-hm. Dad, can I do that too
whenever Mom scolds me? [laughing] You're so silly. Come here, let's fix your hair. Do you have a hair tie? There, to let your beauty
stand out more... Excuse me, is this line
for the Education course? Oh. Yes, it's here. [Joan] Oh, you're right. Do you think it's okay
to take this course? Um, I don't know. Maybe. Think about it, you'll have
to teach rowdy kids, don't you? But I guess that's fine, too. Here's the line for DevCom! Freshmen who haven't picked
a course yet can line up here. Sir, what's DevCom? Development Communication.
It's just a new course here. Well, what do you study there? Um, do you know Korina Sanchez? You can be like her
if you take this course. -Yes, Miss?
-[woman] Sir, -is it a four-year course?
-Yes... [indistinct chatter] I'm here
at my chosen university, and I think I've found
the right course for me. Jonalyn Panopio, reporting. [giggles] "Joan?" That's my screen name, Dad.
Doesn't it sound better on TV? -[Juana] "Joan?"
-Wow. -[Joan giggles]
-"Joan Panopio!" -Wow, it does sound better.
-[Juana] "Joan Panopio." Hmm. Juana, our daughter
will be famous! She's going to be a reporter! -[Joan squeals]
-[chuckles] Here you go. -I prepared all of your lunches.
-Wow. Ten pesos for you... -Okay, Mom.
-...five pesos for Maricris, and five pesos for Jonel, okay? -Thank you, Mom.
-Share it, okay? -All right.
-All right, take care, okay? [Dad] Oops. [sighs] Okay. -[Juana] "Joan Panopio."
-[Dad] Right. -Okay.
-[Juana chuckles] [Dad] Everybody, Joan Panopio
is here... Myrene, thanks for lending me
your book. I saved a lot of money
because of you. Don't be silly, it's nothing.
Oh, how are things? Did the professor agree
to let you take the exam? Once I pay the tuition fee,
he'll let me take the exam. But I already talked
to my sibling, I'll get money soon. -Thank goodness for that.
-That's right. [giggles] [woman] Here's my payment.
Please pass it forward. -Oh, here's mine!
-[Myrene] Oh, hand it over. -All right.
-Mister, here's the payment. Here's the payment. [whispers]
Lord, I'm really sorry. Sorry. All of you have no heart! [Charo] <i>"I went through</i>
<i>many embarrassing situations</i> <i>while I was studying in college.</i> <i>But I just kept in mind</i> <i>the struggles</i>
<i>of my parents and my siblings</i> <i>just so I can finish</i>
<i>my education.</i> <i>That's why I was determined</i>
<i>to give my best</i> <i>and fulfill my dreams.</i> <i>I thought I found the place</i>
<i>that would accept me."</i> Thank you very much, group two. As always, another
award-winning performance from Miss Panopio. [applause] Class, before we dismiss,
I want you to know that it's almost time
for Miss DevCom. Who among you wants to join? Sir, how about Joan?
Right, guys? Joan! [all] Joan! Joan! Joan! So, Miss Panopio,
are you going to join? [all] Joan! Joan! Joan! [professor] Quiet! Quiet, class. Joan, don't let them
force you to join. Anybody who joins Miss DevCom
will get additional points, whether you win or lose. -[boy] Go on! You'll surely win!
-[girls] Go on! [people cheering, applauding] [Joan]<i> Wow, is this real?</i> <i>I didn't get to join</i>
<i>a procession,</i> <i>but I joined this instead?</i> <i>My God,</i>
<i>I feel like I'm dreaming.</i> [people applauding] Hi, everybody,
I'm Jonalyn Panopio, and I'm a sophomore student. Thank you! [people applauding, murmuring] -[boy 1] Her dress looks cheap!
-[laughter] [laughing continues] -[boy 1] Didn't even iron it!
-[boy 2] Wow. It's so wrinkly. [applauding, whooping] -[Myrene] You were so great.
-Thank you, Myrene. -I...
-There. Oh, wait. -I need to get something.
-All right. Oh! [boy 1] You know, guys, I didn't
expect Joan to join. [laughs] [girl] I couldn't tell
if she just has thick skin or she's just that gullible. Or maybe she's crazy. [laughter] Yeah, all of the above! Just like Joan's dream
of being a reporter. An illusion, a figment
of her imagination, how crazy. -[girl] All of the above!
-[laughter] What goes in the right ear
goes out the left. What goes in the right ear
goes out the left. What goes in the right ear
goes out the left. What goes in the right ear...
[sobs] ...goes out the left. [sobbing] What goes in the right ear
goes out the left. [sobbing continues] [Juana] Jason? Jason, call your Dad.
It's time to eat. [Jason] All right. -Dad, it's time to eat.
-[Dad] Okay. Hey. You're here. Oh! Yes, Dad. Your most favorite and most
beautiful daughter is here. -[laughter]
-Won't you give me an applause? -[applause]
-[Juana] Wow! My child is so pretty! So, what happened? -Looks like my sister won.
-Looks like it, she's happy! -I didn't.
-[Juana] Huh? [Joan] But it's fine. I didn't join to win, anyway. I was just after
the points for my grades. -[Juana] Ah.
-For me, you've already won. Because you got to participate. See, that contest is similar
to a procession. So your dream came true! Today, a procession,
tomorrow, a TV reporter! [all chuckling] -[Juana] Come, let's eat.
-Well, let's eat. All right, I'll eat in a bit. Let me just get
my stuff outside. [Juana] Hurry up, all right?
The food will get cold. When I heard what they said, it brought me back
to elementary school. That's how other kids
treated me before. -They even had a name for me.
-What? AMA, A Miserable
Appearance. [chuckles] [scoffs] Not like they're
the standard for good looks. You should've let them know
that you heard what they said. You should've confronted them. But this is who I am. I'm insane, crazy!
Look at my face. I'm not that pretty.
I just have thick skin. Joan! Myrene, I'm fine. My dad told me
to just ignore them. Whatever, I'll just study hard. And when I graduate,
I'll work for a TV network. Or maybe a radio station. Even if it's behind the camera. I'll fulfill my dream
no matter what. -Come on, let's do interviews.
-Game. -All right.
-The more, the better. -So we'd... Sir!
-Oh, Sir, Sir! -Do you have some time?
-Sir, can we interview you? It's just about
the flooding here. -Oh, you, Sir!
-Sir! -Can we interview you?
-I'm in a rush. [Myrene] Oh. How frustrating. -Oh, Sir, excuse me.
-[man] Oh. -Yes?
-Can we interview you? -[man] Sure.
-[Myrene] Wow. We need you to... Because she's pretty and fairer,
you'll agree for an interview. -Oh, him, that guy! Sir!
-Oh! Oh, Sir! -Hi, Sir!
-Sir! Um, can we interview you, Sir?
Even just for a while! Sir, notice me, please! Sir, notice me,
I'm not invisible! Joan, let it be. [Charo] <i>"I gradually accepted</i> <i>the fact that I can't be</i>
<i>a reporter,</i> <i>but I thought there was at least</i>
<i>some space for me</i> <i>behind the camera.</i> I don't know where I left it.
Let me look for it again. Sir, let's just ask an intern
to do the missing voiceover. -That's good enough.
-Okay. -All right, thank you, um...
-Ma'am. -Camille?
-Ma'am. Come here, we need someone
to do a quick voiceover. Come on, hurry. [Charo] <i>"With how that scenario</i>
<i>always kept happening,</i> <i>my self-confidence</i>
<i>slowly disappeared</i> <i>until there was nothing left.</i> <i>After graduating from college,</i>
<i>I found a job."</i> Welcome to Movie Universe. Sir, thank you.
Thank you so much. [man] Okay, I'll introduce you
to Hope. Hope, this is Miss Joan,
our new attendant. Hi! [man] We have comedy,
we have suspense on VCDs... Why are you working
at a VCD and CD rental shop? That place doesn't even require
you to finish your studies. But Dad,
it's only for experience. I'll go for a better job
when I find one. And my salary there can help us,
even though it won't be much. But your mother and I
can handle that. You don't need
to give anything to us. What matters is for you
to get a job at a TV network so you can finally be
a reporter. Dad, there's no TV station
in Batangas. If I want to apply for a job
at a TV network, I'll go to Manila. Then go to Manila. Oh, you know, Miss Nida
heard about this. -She lent you a dress. Show her.
-Oh! You're right! -Oh, Mom, don't bother.
-Get it, see if... Give it back for now, because it'll take a while
before I apply. But why? I talked to a classmate. She's going around
some companies in Manila, too. -[Dad hums]
-She said TV networks aren't open
for hiring yet. Try radio stations then. It's the same case, Dad. [hums] Is she sure? Maybe she's just saying that
because she didn't get in. -But you...
-Dad, there's no open position. All right, I'm going to bed now. Hi, Ma'am,
welcome to Movie Universe. [CDs clatter] Joan, Joan. -What?
-Someone wants you to have this. [Joan] What? "Dear Joan... If you only knew
how much you make me happy -whenever I see you."
-[squeals] "Whenever you smile at others,
my day feels complete. I hope someday, I get to be
the one to receive your smile." [both scream] [Joan] Oh, my God!
Who gave this letter? -Turn around!
-Who? Who is it? -Why?
-[Greg] Joan... Are you the one
who made this letter? I'm Greg. [Charo] <i>"I got close to Greg.</i> <i>He wooed me.</i> <i>It wasn't difficult</i>
<i>for me to fall for him.</i> <i>When I'm with him, I forget</i>
<i>about what others think of me,</i> <i>because for him, I'm pretty,</i>
<i>I'm special.</i> Good evening. I'm happy for you, dear. Greg looks like a nice guy. Just make sure
you won't make my daughter cry. -Oh, no.
-[Joan giggles] I really love your daughter. Right, buddy? We call each other "buddy," Mom. There are too many people
using "honey," "sweetheart," or "darling." So to be different,
we used "buddy." [giggles] Uh, Mom, I have
another good news for you. I applied for a job
at the pharmacy in town, Mom. My salary will be bigger.
I can give you a bigger amount. I thought you'd apply
at TV or radio stations? Why are you settling
for a job at a pharmacy? Uh, Greg, come on,
join us for supper. -Oh, okay.
-[Juana] Come on. -I'll go inside, hmm?
-Sure. [Juana] Sit here. Is it because of him, huh? You don't want to be away
from your boyfriend? Come on, Nalyn. Isn't that
what you studied about? Or is Greg
rubbing off on you? Huh? Is that what your jobless
boyfriend teaches you? Dad, Greg is only waiting
for his employer overseas. Don't make it look
like he's worthless. Dad, don't drag him into this, because he had nothing to do
with my decision. If that's the case,
then what's the problem? Nalyn! What's the problem?
Tell me. What changed? I just don't want to, Dad. My dreams have changed. I wish you told us earlier, before we paid
for your education. Our sacrifices
have gone to waste. [door slams] -[Joan] Let's eat.
-[kid] Wow. [Joan, Juana] It's from Greg. -[kid] Wow.
-[Joan] Come on. -While it's hot.
-Come in, Greg. Greg got accepted for the job
he applied for in Qatar. So, we'll be celebrating! Oh, so that's why
you brought this. My buddy really is amazing.
Come on, take a seat. -[Juana] In Qatar.
-Go, eat while the food is hot. -Let's eat.
-Take it out. Oh, I smell it. -Wait, let me get plates.
-It looks delicious. -Wait.
-[Juan] It makes me hungry. Oh, Dad. Let's eat, it's good.
The chicken is freshly cooked. Greg bought it, Dad. -[Juana] It's tasty.
-[boy] Let's eat. -[Juana] Smells good.
-[girl] Dig in. [Charo] <i>"No matter how hard</i>
<i>I try to fix it,</i> <i>my relationship</i>
<i>with my Dad got worse.</i> <i>Greg proceeded to work overseas.</i> <i>But even though we're apart,</i>
<i>our love got stronger.</i> <i>After one year,</i>
<i>he returned to the country."</i> They actually laughed at me. My buddy is so sweet. -Huh? Huh?
-[giggles] Thanks, it's so pretty. Hey, you.
You've been staring too hard. It's obvious
that you've missed me. [both chuckle] Buddy... -Hmm?
-...close your eyes, okay? -Why?
-Just do it. Close your eyes. I don't want to! Close your eyes. Okay? -[sighs] Okay, fine.
-Okay. Imagine it's your wedding day. You're wearing white. And you're walking
towards the altar. Buddy, who's the man
you see waiting for you? It's Papa Piolo! [giggles] Buddy, it's just a joke. It's just a joke. It's you, Greg. You're the one I see. Really? Me too, buddy. You're the one I see,
the one I'll spend my life with. Let's get married. [chuckles] Buddy, I know your Dad
is mad at me, he dislikes me. But buddy, I will do
everything, everything, to prove to him
that I'm worthy of you. -[sobbing]
-Hmm? Don't cry. -Buddy...
-[sniffles] That's not important anymore. What do you mean, buddy? I'll do it. Because your dad is important
to you, and I know that. Buddy, everything
that matters to you... -matters to me, too.
-[crying] Everything you love... I love as well. And buddy, you're the one
I love the most. Greg, I don't understand
why you love me. With all the pretty and
fair-skinned women out there, why did you choose me? Are you sure you're not blind? -[chuckles] Buddy...
-[sniffles] ...I'm not blind. Maybe others think that way.
But buddy, you're all I see. Buddy, I love you so much. So? Can you say yes?
Let's get married. Yes, Greg. Yes! -Yes?
-Yes, yes, yes! We'll always sleep over
and visit you there, Mom. [Charo] <i>"Greg and I got married</i> <i>and we stayed</i>
<i>in his family's house.</i> <i>I was really happy</i>
<i>in the arms of my husband."</i> There's nobody crazy
in this house anymore. There still is, Mom. -It's you!
-Idiot. I'm just joking. I love you, Mom.
I miss you, too. I love you too, dear. -[indistinct TV chatter]
-Uh, Mom, is Dad there? Yes, he's here.
Do you want to talk to him? [Joan] <i>Oh, don't bother, Mom.</i> Just tell him that I've been
thinking about him. All right, I'll tell him. I know your Dad
misses you a lot, too. I'll go now, Mom. Mm, all right. Take care, okay? [Joan hums] <i>Two flash floods have devastated</i>
<i>this barangay...</i> [Joan] Hey, buddy, look at that.
Look at that reporter. That's the right way
of reporting. You can't be too finicky. [reporter]<i> ...it's their</i>
<i>livelihood, so even though...</i> Why don't you try going on TV?
Huh, buddy? Or on the radio. Didn't you just stop pursuing it because it was hard for you
to be in Manila? But there's
ABS-CBN Batangas now. Right, buddy? Come on. Not anymore.
I gave up on it a long time ago. The pharmacy is enough for me. -[indistinct TV chatter]
-[Greg sighs] Buddy. Hey. You can lie to your dad. But not to me. Why did you stop
pursuing your dream? Well, why would I even try if I know it's not for me? I was still in college, then.
I was an intern. I got to know how it goes. Someone like me wouldn't be
noticed in that world. [scoffs[ Because you believe
that you're not beautiful. Buddy, not everybody I see
on TV is pretty. Not all are fair-skinned. [sighs] You know what? You're just scared. Buddy... why don't you try, huh? You know, look at me. If I gave up and let my fear
get the best of me, then I wouldn't have reached
my dream. And then, I wouldn't have you as my wife. -Forget about it.
-Buddy... I won't stop
until you apply for it, okay? Geez, well, what would you do? Would you drag me
to their office? -[whines]
-[giggling] -Is that what you want, huh?
-No. [giggles] -No?
-No. -No? No?
-[gasps] No! -No? No?
-I said no! Hey! [giggles] Hey, Joan, no handsome guy
to pick you up? I know.
Maybe my husband fell asleep. [phone ringing] -Hello?
-[Greg's mom] <i>Joan, get home.</i> Why? Why are you crying?
What happened? [cop] Has he gotten into fights? [man] I don't know,
we just saw him like that. [Greg's mom crying] Joan... -Greg! Greg!
-He's gone. -What happened to my husband?
-Stop. -[crying] Greg!
-Stop. Stop. Greg! -Joan...
-Greg! [Greg's mom] Enough. Enough. [Joan sobbing] [wailing] Greg... Greg... Greg... [Charo] <i>"It was suspected</i> <i>that the neighbor</i>
<i>who got into a fight with Greg</i> <i>was the one who shot him.</i> <i>In an instant,</i>
<i>the one I love was gone.</i> <i>A person who truly accepted me</i>
<i>as I am.</i> <i>Due to my sadness,</i>
<i>I decided to go back home</i> <i>to be with my family.</i> [sobs, sniffles] Dear... Dear, Greg's sibling called
earlier while you were asleep. The police are investigating the guy
he got into a fight with. But they don't have
any strong evidences yet. [Joan sniffles] It's possible
that someone else shot him, and the motive
is to steal from him. [sniffles] Mom, even if they find out who killed my husband, even if they find out
why he was killed, Greg won't come back
to me anymore. [cries] Don't cry. Mom, we've only been married
for six months. It's too short
for the two of us. [sobbing] Why was he taken so soon, Mom? I don't understand. -My dear...
-[cries] Greg... [man] <i>Your brother</i>
<i>is asking you for help.</i> <i>Ah... Okay, Dad.</i> <i>What, I thought</i>
<i>you can handle it?</i> [boy] <i>No, I don't get it.</i> [girl] <i>All right, let me see.</i>
<i>What are you confused about?</i> [boy] <i>Uh, the square root of...</i> Dear, your mother went
to the market to buy something. Maybe you'd want to go with her. Not right now. [woman] <i>So what...</i> Nalyn... I know what happened hurt you. But... you should be strong. Go on with your life. You've been like this
for months. Easy for you to say. From the start,
you never liked Greg. Yes, but... I didn't... I never wanted that
to happen to him. Or to you. You never gave him
a chance, Dad. You judged him from the get-go. I thought he... He stopped you
from fulfilling your dreams. But I was wrong. Because I saw how much... How much he made you happy... How much he cared... Dear, you can't blame me
for thinking that, because... Before you met,
you had a lot of goals. You wanted to be a reporter, you wanted to work
at a TV station. Before I even met Greg... I already gave up
on that dream, Dad. It's impossible for me. Because I can't fulfill it. Even though I want to,
my face isn't good enough. Or my skin. Or even my abilities
for that job. Dad, I didn't tell you that because I didn't want
to disappoint you. What are you talking about? Dad, no matter how high
your dreams are for me, it can't change reality,
don't you get that? You know... the dreams I have for you
never really mattered. What's important is... the dream you have for yourself. Since you were little, I've been teaching you
how to fight. That wasn't for my sake. -It was for you.
-[sniffles] Now... maybe you don't fit in the standards
others impose, but... But dear, the courage that you have, the bravery in you... That's it.
That's what'll make you rise. See, that's the reason why
you deserve to be recognized. Because of that, others will know about you. Just give it a try. I saw it in you. Greg saw it in you. Dear... why can't you see it
in yourself? <i>I can't stand it anymore.</i> <i>Especially when I remember</i>
<i>what Billy went through.</i> <i>See? Look.</i> <i>Look at what you did,</i>
<i>Mrs. Reyes.</i> <i>Oh, dear. You know what, Lea?</i> <i>I really can't blame you</i>
<i>if you can't forgive your dad.</i> <i>Because, well, he brought you</i>
<i>so much pain.</i> <i>It's not easy</i>
<i>to recover from that.</i> [Mrs. Reyes]
<i>Hey, but we all know</i> <i>that it would be best</i> <i>if you take away the pain</i>
<i>in your heart.</i> [man] <i>But I also know...</i> Oh, wait, wait!
Here's my folder. Oh, I'm still wearing slippers.
How embarrassing. I didn't want the mud at the market
to stick to my shoes. And my Mom asked me to buy this. Earlier, I was wondering
if I should go home first. But I just went here
to avoid going back and forth. -Okay.
-I'll put my shoes on now. I think someone's
at the wrong place. For me,
I wouldn't be caught dead wearing black stockings. [woman 2 chuckles] I think she's applying
to be a saleslady at a mall, not a reporter. [scoffs] Anyway, as I was saying, I should've been
a magna cum laude. But my professor didn't like me. That's why I'm just a cum laude. What a shame. Wow, you're a cum laude.
You're awesome. I wonder how we'll do.
I doubt we'd even have a chance. Don't be silly. Almost all of us here
has a chance. Almost. Not all. We're here at Lipa City
where an accident happened. An accident happened,
and many got into the accident. I mean, many were injured in this accident
that happened, uh... Sorry, can I try again? Oh, Miss. I'm sorry. But a lot of applicants
are still waiting. Okay, next. Jonalyn Panopio. [chuckles] Oh, I'm sorry, Sir!
I'm sorry. -My sardines... I'm sorry.
-[clattering] -[man grunts]
-Let me get the mic. -Let me. Let me.
-Oh, I have it. -Let me get my stuff.
-Let me. -Oh, my. Oh, gosh.
-Wait, hold this. -Sir, I'm sorry.
-Let me. Just hold the mic.
I'll get those. -Uh, all right.
-Just hold the mic. Hold my bag too, please. Um, Miss Panopio, just report
about anything you want. [inhales, exhales] [clears throat] We're here, live,
inside a restaurant wherein applicants for ABS-CBN
are all dressed up. They're looking for a reporter
here in Batangas. If you look around me, applicants have
different styles. Some keep walking around
without a destination, some are restless, and some
keep clicking their tongues. Some also talk to themselves. A lot screamed, while somebody
also rolled on the floor. But he was already assisted out by our brave
security guards earlier. So for those determined
to catch up and apply as a reporter, make sure that apart from
your resume and school records, you also bring
a medical clearance from a mental hospital. And for other inquiries, additional details
will pop up on the screen. And cut. -Thank you, Miss Panopio.
-[Joan] Thanks. Miss Jonalyn Panopio.
Please take a seat. -It's Joan. Call me Joan, Sir.
-Joan. Joan. Okay, Joan. Sir Stanley, I can't believe that you're the one
interviewing me. -You're so handsome in person.
-[chuckles] [Stanley] Thank you. Thank you. So, Joan,
tell me about yourself. What do your parents do? My father is a farmer
while my mother is a soul siren. -C-Come again? Soul siren?
-[giggles] My mother nags me every day.
"Joan, do some cleaning! -Joan, get up already!"
-[laughing] "Joan, cook the rice!" Oh, sir, it hurts my ears.
That’s how my mom normally is. -[sighs] Joan...
-[giggles] ...one of the biggest issues
in our government is corruption. What do you have to say
about that? Oh, sir, I would like
to hang them up. They bask in their pleasures
while we continue to struggle. So when I become a reporter, I'll never back down
from those types of issues. You know,
a reporter's life is hard. Aren't you scared
that they'll get back at you? Reporting is the least I can do
for our country. I'll still do it, Sir. And I know something
about being scared. It's been the theme of my life
for a few years. There are a lot of things
I have yet to do. Just like this interview. Because of the fear
that I can't handle it well, I never tried it before. Sir, I've belittled myself
for a long time. So even if I don't pass
this interview right now, I'll still be happy. Because I finally tried it
and did it. When I become a reporter,
I'll take that lesson with me. I'll never let fear take over when I do good things
for myself and for others. [door opens] [door closes] Miss Jonalyn Panopio. Miss Panopio. Here's your referral letter so you can take an exam
at ABS-CBN in Manila. If you pass it,
then it's official. You'll be a reporter
at ABS-CBN Batangas. -Really, Sir?
-[chuckles] Sir, thank you.
Thank you so much, Sir. Thank you all for coming.
You can go home now. -Thank you, Sir.
-We'll just call you. What was that?
So she's the only one accepted? [squeals] Yes, yes, yes! [laughs] -Mom, Dad!
-Hey, what is it? I passed the interview! -[screaming]
-[laughs] Out of 17 applicants,
I'm the only one who got a referral letter to take the exam
at ABS-CBN in Manila! -[squeals]
-And, if I pass that, I'll finally be a reporter! [all cheering] Come here!
I knew you can make it! -[laughs]
-Thanks, Dad. Thank you
for always believing in me. -Oh, that will never change!
-[laughs] -Wow, Dad!
-[cheering] -[boy] You're amazing, Joan!
-[laughs] -[Juana] We'll see her on TV!
-Mom! -[Juana] Oh, my, sweetie!
-Wow, Mom! -[Juana] Did you cry?
-Hey! -[Joan] I'll be a reporter!
-Guys! My daughter
is going to be a reporter! -[indistinct TV chatter]
-It's coming! It's coming! Don't blink, okay?
Don't make any noise! There it is! That's my hand! That's me! That's me! That's my hand! [Charo]
<i>"After my first news assignment,</i> <i>my career as a reporter</i>
<i>was set into motion.</i> <i>Eventually, I became</i>
<i>a news anchor</i> <i>for ABS-CBN Batangas.</i> <i>My job is hard.</i> <i>But because I love</i>
<i>what I do, it's fine.</i> <i>Because of my job,</i> <i>I was able to build trust</i>
<i>in my own abilities.</i> <i>I learned to value</i>
<i>and accept myself.</i> <i>I found out</i>
<i>that it's not bad to dream,</i> <i>especially if you'll put in</i>
<i>hard work,</i> <i>determination, and courage.</i> <i>That's all. Joan."</i> In the pursuit of our dreams, there will be people
who will inevitably mock us. They'll make us feel
that what we want is impossible. But there will also be people
who will give us courage, and it's up to us to decide
which voice to listen to. All of us have
the ability to succeed. It's important for us
to believe in ourselves. Because it's the key that will open doors
filled with opportunities. This is Charo Santos.
Have a good evening, everybody. "TELEVISION"
