What would it mean to win the title this weekend? It would mean.... From a professional point of view, it would mean simply everything, really. The Superbike World Championship comes down to the season finale. This weekend is very important. Also, it’s not a really big gap. But this is my dream; now, I’m very close. Toprak’s not on his limit, but the guys he’s passing are on their limit. This weekend it’s all about opportunity and what we can gain, and not what we can lose. Jonny’s the best World Superbike rider there’s ever been. Always I'm telling Toprak, he will not give up easily. What made, in my opinion, this season remarkable and something that will be remembered, is that I've never seen in my life such nice competition in World Superbike. Absolutely anything, literally, could happen. Welcome to my channel, everybody. This is my car. It’s very special. Also, the front tyre is intermediate. 12:30, I went to sleep, 9 o’clock I woke up. - It's perfect. - Perfect, yeah. I’m really happy the last race is here, because I see many Muslim people, everybody coming to watch World Superbike. Even though we didn’t have a good first round of the championship at Aragon, we really saw some good signs there. The journey to the 2021 world title begins here, in MotorLand Aragon. And look at Razgatlioglu diving through, from 10th on the grid remember, Toprak! And he’s picked off now Tom Sykes! Yeah, it’s impressive from Toprak. This is a track where he’s never really looked easy on the bike, whether it was on the Kawasaki or on the Yamaha. Jonathan Rea takes his 100th victory in WorldSBK! And Alex Lowes is through on Toprak Razgatlioglu in the run down to the line! A brilliant first race of the 2021 season! Those seeds were sown fairly early on that it looked like we were going to be able to challenge. But winning is a whole different thing. The turning point where our season probably started was Race 2, Misano. Toprak made a step himself. He said, “right, I’ve had enough of second place. I need to win”. Toprak Razgatlioglu makes his move now on Jonathan Rea. Razgatlioglu bundles past around the slowest corner on the circuit, turn 14. Toprak hasn’t won a race in 2021, he’s determined to do so here in Misano! Well, if you thought it was Jonathan Rea versus Scott Redding, think again! Toprak Razgatlioglu claims his first race victory of 2021 and narrows the championship deficit to Jonathan Rea to just 20 points, beating the championship leader three consecutive times this weekend in Misano! Once you start winning and that self-belief and that confidence comes both from the rider and the team, it’s easier to repeat it. Of course, you need a special rider, and in our case we’ve had a very special rider this year in Toprak. This circuit, they’re building very fast. I said I didn’t think it would be possible to race in Indonesia, but I’m surprised. Respect. - Ciao! - Ciao mate. How are you? - I'm well, how are you? - Ciao! - Ah, ciao! Middle of 2019, Toprak had a lot of options to choose for the 2020 season. It was Donington Park, 2019, around that time. Toprak had a really competitive ride at Donington on the Puccetti bike, that team looked after him really well. He fought Jonathan for the win. Herbie Blash, consultant to Yamaha Motor Corporation and their racing programmes, and Andrea, spoke with Kenan and made Yamaha’s interest very clear. In 2019, I was positively surprised by the performance Toprak was achieving. Consistency was missing, but I strongly believed in the potential of the kid. And then we started to approach him. I told Kawasaki, the only option if you want to keep Toprak, you need to build a full package in the Puccetti Racing team. But Kawasaki strongly tried to take him from Puccetti and put him in the official team. It was around Suzuka 8 hours. I was with Toprak there for around one week. He was already in touch with Yamaha. I said, "OK, it’s your decision, you have to do what’s best for your career." They don't bring here, they stop this tyre in Estoril. Paul! Sorry guys, this is my boss, team boss. He’s also crazy. I wasn’t sure about Toprak, because the consistency… Talent spotting is difficult, you know. We’re all right when we’re right, but nobody wants to be wrong. In Mikey and in Alex, we had two super strong consistent riders… Toprak showed flashes of brilliance. I don’t think what we’re seeing now anyone could have seen in 2019. I will win, Scott will be second. Ducatis are going to help me out. And if it’s not true, you can just put this footage in the bin. - You think the distance from the start to Turn 1 is... - Similar to Catalunya. - Longer than any track I see. Or similar to Catalunya, maybe? Maybe longer. - Not like Catalunya, but long. (What are you thinking) for braking? - Maybe... - Last part of the wall? - You see the kerb? - A-ha. - Maybe a little bit after. - After the first... - Maybe more, I don’t know. We've done a little bit of investigating, trying to find out as much information as we can about the new track. It's quite limited information, I must admit. That's been the main focus for us, to try and understand what we're going to be using for FP1 in terms of gearing and gearbox patterns. - Long lap not bad. - That is long, eh? It's extra long! - No! - I think yes. - You enter here, exit here. Not really bad. - I hope we don’t need to use it. - No, no. - It’s better we don’t find out. - I’ve used it two times, enough for this season. - Check it in practice. Phil has been, for sure, has played an important role. Toprak had a very good connection with Phil. At the beginning, Toprak was not so fluent in English, but already those two guys, they established their own way of speaking, communicating. As soon as there are difficulties, it can be technical difficulties, it can be a crash, whatever, the race engineer plays a fundamental role, because you need to keep the rider quiet, you need to organise the job, you need to give the rider confidence. There are a few areas that he’s really demanding of the bike, as I’m sure you can see on television. Once you understand the level that he has, the talent that he has, you can start to try and understand what he’s doing on the bike, but most of it is pretty impossible for other people to do. He learns very fast. You saw in Donington Race 1, with the damp conditions. He was able to adapt quite quickly to extract the most out of it. He has that natural ability to adapt. He’s a fast learner, which is fortunate for us. Good morning and welcome to Free Practice 1, the first WorldSBK session around this Mandalika International Circuit. A totally new track for everyone, a blank slate – no data to call upon. Friday then becomes even more important than usual for riders and teams. Yeah, nobody knows what to expect over the course of this weekend. Really, for everyone, this is a step into the unknown. - Take care with engine brake. When you brake, because... Without gas, without brake, it’s locking. - It’s not too slow. - Like Donington, T1? - Exactly, like Donington. Toprak’s on a mission at the moment, isn’t he? He’s not shy, that’s for sure, at the start on a new circuit. Jonathan Rea, still rooted to the pit box. The statistics prove it along the bottom of the screen. Just 10 laps completed for Rea during this session and stranded in the pit box with work ongoing. We’re continuing to rub our eyes in the commentary box! Razgatlioglu is a group all on his own in Free Practice 1. 1’34.985, a second and a half faster than his nearest rival as the chequered flag falls. Toprak’s just put that pressure onto Jonathan Rea. The technical issues that Rea had, that will have increased that pressure even more. Around the track, the service road is so far away, very far. You don't see any mistakes. We rode together five years and a half, and until year number three, I think almost zero English for him, so there were not a lot of words. But this guy, from the beginning, we saw he was not normal, really another level. I remember one time in Assen. I have a two-floor truck and he jumped from the stairs of the two-floor truck with the Kawasaki electric bicycle. I remember Mahias looked at him and looked at me, and said: “I don’t know who is more crazy, you, or your team manager allowing you to do this”! Really, whatever he touches, incredible. For me, really, he’s a stuntman. Maybe he’s a stuntman rider, not only a motorbike rider. It was interesting, after the session, to go down and talk to some of the Yamaha team about it. They’ve all said the exact same thing. He seems absolutely at ease with himself this weekend. He’s not shown any signs of pressure for trying to win this World Championship this weekend. You can see there, Toprak a little bit late to the pit box. Well, I think he’s in a position to be able to keep everyone waiting, isn’t he? Well, you don’t want to take too many liberties at the start of the weekend. Free Practice 2 underway then. Toprak Razgatlioglu now boards his steed. It’s going to be over the line for Jonathan Rea. What can he do? He can go P1 in this session. A 1’35.122. He pips Alex Lowes’ fastest time. Toprak Razgatlioglu makes another step there. A 1’34.230. As it is right now, he’s about eight tenths of a second off Toprak. Expect to see him close that gap down. Jonathan Rea second fastest, having missed so much running in FP1. That’s less than a quarter of a second slower than Toprak Razgatlioglu, which bodes well. - How’s it going man? - Much better. - Yeah, the second steps... - The first corner, it’s like in 2018… - When I go on the kerb, it’s a strange feeling, like the rear lashing. With Toprak, when he was riding in, in Superstock 600 even, I could see that he was a huge talent. I was joking with journalists sometimes in media debriefs that, after me he would be the next champion. I spent some time on track with Toprak, trying to help him a little bit. That was really positive. I’m really impressed with his lap time today, it’s super good for a rookie to be so fast in this difficult circuit. First test in Superbike with us, I said 20 times to him: if you destroy the bike, I kill you! It costs like a Ferrari for me, I can’t pay one more! Really, careful. Then after 10 laps, Jonny, always very nice with him and with us, let him follow. I remember in 2018 he was helping every race weekend. Also in 2019. Normally we are talking, we are speaking, no problem. This is important, outside we are friends. Inside, OK, everybody tries their best. This is racing. This is normal. I’m quite at ease because I respect the job he’s doing. Of course, I’m not happy to be on the receiving end when he wins and I don’t win, that’s tough sometimes. But at the end, you know, my father, when I was younger, I came in from one motocross race and I was in tears because I lost the race. And he was going crazy at me saying: “You can’t do this, because this is not the way. You have to be respectful, that guy was better today". I think that’s a life lesson and fundamental that I’ve tried to, I’ve tried to carry. It has been a challenging year. We made some mistakes that, maybe, we should not have. OK, nobody is perfect, we always have something to learn. We need to be ready and accept that it’s not always possible to win. The facts are that the Kawasaki is a fantastic bike. It's a great bike, lovely bike to ride and it’s still a very, very competitive bike. But all the other bikes are improving as well. I think Jonny has been on the limit a lot this year to battle with them at some circuits. And I think that's shown. What a moment that was! He’s saved it, but he’s in the grass. Jonathan Rea with a massive moment! He’s going to leave the circuit altogether. A big moment for Rea! - Rea's down! - Down goes Jonathan Rea! An oh-so rare error from the reigning World Champion! I don’t feel there’s any fingers to point inside, why the results are going down. There’s a period that we need to adapt, we need to recognise that we need to improve. I feel that the engineers in Japan, the engineers in the garage understand that, and they have my back. I never feel the fingers being pointed at me. I can think a little bit like Jonny. If you’re a five-time World Champion, you start to be afraid of losing. I think in 2019, the year with Bautista, when he won the championship I believe Jonny learned a lot. And always I’m telling Toprak, he will not give up easily. Jonathan’s relentless to race against, painful to race against really. Because, you know, you can be dominant and look over your shoulder, and Jonathan is just there. He might have a jab here down the inside of Toprak Razgatlioglu, tries to catch him by surprise into the Imola chicane! It’s a drag now down, as they come towards the end of the opening sector, to the chicane. Razgatliogu still there on the inside, Jonathan Rea can’t get it turned, almost gets off the bike altogether! Razgatlioglu goes all the way around the outside, he then has a massive moment! Jonathan Rea comes scything through at Turn 2! Here we go again between the top two in the World Championship! Through turns 4 and 5, we ride onboard with Razgatlioglu. If you’re going to win in World Superbike, beating Jonathan and his team is as good as a benchmark as you’re ever going to get. I’ve been last year in Estoril, going into the championship with a huge advantage to Scott. And I know all the, you know, you have the angel and the devil? I know all the voices of the devil. This weekend, it’s all about opportunity and what we can gain, and not what we can lose. Seeing Toprak’s pace in yesterday’s practice sessions, the Turkish rider is ready to claim his crown. Jonathan Rea has to make up 30 points this weekend, and yesterday he also lost an awful lot of track running in Free Practice 1. Toprak still hasn’t managed to get himself back out. You can see the number 54 in the pit box, losing a bit of running at the start of the session. He looks pretty relaxed about it all the same, though. It’s a mechanical sport and to let the rider down, let the sponsors down, let everybody down by the machine failing… Whether it’s Formula 1, MotoGP or World Superbike, is the worst feeling in the world. Into Turn 4, Toprak Razgatlioglu for the lead of Race 1. Toprak with problems! Toprak Razgatlioglu, your race leader, drops out of the action with mechanical dramas! Very angry for this, because it was the first time I was really fast in wet conditions. Last five laps, I could have won, but it wasn’t possible to finish the race. It was a pure tech failure in Catalunya, made all the more frustrating when Toprak has previously kind of struggled in the rain and was going to win that race in the rain. And of course, the Portimao accident was not a crash, it was also a technical failure. Down goes Toprak Razgatlioglu from second position! We have a title race on our hands! Woah he’s off! It’s easy to look at all that stuff and say, we should have been celebrating a World Championship in Argentina. But it’s a team sport, it’s a mechanical sport. The season’s swung... You don’t really know what’s going to happen. I’ve lost more than 30 points in one weekend by a split-second mistake, or something happened. Also, I’ve gained that kind of advantage. I can only say that if we don’t win, naturally we'll regret some of the things that happened over the season that could have worked against us. Toprak Razgatlioglu now starting his last lap of the session so we’ll see if Toprak’s able to push on and give us a good indication of where he is before Superpole. Really showing the Yamaha’s working well. Goes across the line, misses out by a tenth of a second. But for Toprak, even with the lack of running, that’s a fast time. It’s boding well for him heading into the Superpole session. He’s about half a second faster than Jonathan Rea. - Do you need it? - Where are the keys? - In the car. Can you remember the day you met Toprak? Yeah, I remember him. He was very young. I think he was around maybe 7-8 years old. He was doing stunt shows with his father, I knew his father many years. Before, I helped him in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, German Yamaha Cup, all these places, I was there before. But I definitively took him in the 2014 season. He uses too much road, does he? Across the line, surely he has it! Toprak Razgatlioglu wins for Turkey! You can win again tomorrow? Yes! After I started with Kenan, with Kenan helping, after that my father stayed home. He was not coming with me. When I was racing in the European Championship, in the Stock class in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, I had no opportunity. I had no brother, I had no powerful one who could arrange for me to go to Superbike. End of 2014, he was out of a job. I understood that such a talented boy could not be out of a job. I decided to take him with me, but I told him: Now your father, your mother, your brother, your family… Everyone is me. You need to listen to everything I do, you need to live in my city, and I will take care of everything. I will change your life, I promised him. And in six years, look at where he is now. This is the Kenan Sofuoglu mentality. It’s to teach to all his riders: if you are a champion, you can only think to win. All the rest is nothing. Second is completely the same as last. The top performers all setting their fastest times earlier on this morning. It was Scott Redding fastest by less than a tenth of a second ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu. We build up to this World Championship fight, starting what could be the biggest day of his career. It’s his fourth season in World Superbike, looking to claim the destiny that everyone wrote for him when he first arrived in this championship. He's outpaced everyone all season Jonathan Rea looking for his first pole position since Magny-Cours, after starting this season with eight in a row. He takes three tenths of a second, a brilliant final sector from Rea to find something extra. Pere Riba remains poker-faced, but it’s a 1'33.201 from Jonathan Rea. Catch me if you can! Could we even be into the 1’32s here? Razgatlioglu is up by one and a half tenths of a second after three completed sectors. Now it’s all about Toprak Razgatlioglu. He is into the 1'32s, that is astonishing! And it quite rightly receives a round of applause from the Pata Yamaha boys. Toprak, your third pole position this year and in the final round of the season. How are you feeling going into Race 1? The feeling’s very good, we are ready to race. Good qualifying for me. I hope we can win, but we will see in the race. Thank you very much. Best of luck, Toprak. We're building up to racing in Lombok, Indonesia for the thirteenth and final stage of the 2021 campaign. Three dry races this weekend and Toprak Razgatlioglu would be a comfortable favourite. Wet weather conditions adds an awful lot of jeopardy, because you feel that it’s only misfortune that’s going to stop Toprak from getting this title race over the line. Nobody’s going to want to make a misjudgement on the tyres, because it is potentially race-ending. I must say Steve, The amount of rain that's coming down now makes me doubt whether we will even be able to start this race. For now, at least, it’s going to be goodbye from the Mandalika International Circuit. Monsoon weather yesterday afternoon left water ankle-deep, conditions not rideable let alone raceable. Twenty hours on from the scheduled start time, we go again for Race 1 of the Pirelli Indonesian Round. Toprak’s plan was to get it put to bed on Saturday. Obviously with the weather, that moved the goalposts for us. I must admit, there wasn’t a lot of sleep last night. The only time I saw him feel the pressure at all was maybe literally just before the pitlane opened. Not feeling stressed, but maybe a little bit of pressure. In my box, everybody was waiting. Kenan never says, “Toprak, slow, think of the championship”. Never says this. He just says to fight for wins, try your best. This is the way to not give him stress. This is the way let him enjoy riding the bike. I believe that the things in Assen, what happened, it was very good for us. Because Toprak arrived leading the championship too early. If you lead the championship too early, it can give you stress. Race 2 of the 2021 Prosecco DOC Dutch Round gets underway. Flying start from Garrett Gerloff further back down the order. We’ll see if he can make immediate progress. He’s up into the top 5 by the time they reach Turn 1. Gerloff sliding his way down the inside! He’s collected Toprak Razgatlioglu! The main contender to Jonathan Rea is wiped out at Turn 1 by fellow Yamaha runner Garrett Gerloff! F**k! He’s stupid! But why? - The Championship is over. - No no! After I crashed I said, OK, the championship, this is finished for me. Toprak, which you can appreciate in the heat of the moment, his approach was “well, that’s it, championship done”. Because he knows how strong Jonathan is. Up at the front of the field, the first-ever hat-trick here in Assen. Jonathan Rea has done it yet again at the TT Circuit! I think with our help, and certainly with the help of Kenan, he managed to reset very quickly and was, within a couple of days, excited about the next race and looking forward to getting back to it. Razgatlioglu makes his move with two to go. Into Turn 20 comes Toprak Razgatlioglu! Redding we know has the acceleration off the final turn. But it’s going to be Toprak Razgatlioglu with his first race victory since Donington Park! Redding is just four hundredths of a second behind the number 54 Yamaha! The Assen crash made Toprak much more relaxed and much stronger. If we asked Toprak right now, how many points do you have? I think Toprak would tell you: “I don’t know”. It definitely changed the whole dynamic in the team. I noticed that as well, we’ve also mentioned this in the box. Unlucky that it happened to be Garrett that crashed into Toprak, but that removed pressure from everybody. A reminder of the championship situation, then. Toprak, with a top-two finish, will seal the deal regardless of what Jonathan Rea can do. We trust you, young man. Trust yourself, ride free and enjoy yourself, okay? This start is going to be delayed as a result of the rain. We’re not going to get started until, presumably, the conditions stabilise one way or the other. Either a wet race, or a dry one. - Just make sure you have no more than five please, Phil. I don’t want a penalty for that. - Did they keep the same tyre choice, or did they change? - Didn’t ask. There’s enough people to do that job, so I leave them to it. Phil’s plan was, if a lot more rain was coming, then SCX. He was planning to change if more rain came. I don’t know if he changed. - But they found out that Jonny was with the SCX. The logic was to fit the SCX, to use the same tyre as Jonny. This is the best strategy. When you have the same tyre… - We'll see, I'm not sure. What they don’t want, most of all, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Jonathan Rea, is to be on split strategies. One on one tyre, one on the other. Jonathan Rea is out there on the SCX tyre, it looks like. He’s out there on the super-soft compound tyre. The Yamaha of Toprak Razgatlioglu and Scott Redding on the front row with the Ducati, they’re both out there with the SC0 tyre. Toprak with a big moment on the run into Turn 1! Already a big warning there for Toprak. - Nearly crashed then! - What? - Going down the outside of the start-finish, touched the white line, went full sideways. Nearly highsided. People are going back to the grid. Maybe it’s like a quick-start thing, I’m not sure. OK. Trolley and team back to the grid, trolley and team back to the grid. Five minutes for the riders to change tyres, if they so desire, before we get underway. OK, five-minute board up now. Five minutes. That’s five minutes to the Warm Up Lap, AP. Five minutes if you want to change tyres. A lot of riders will opt to change their tyres. Toprak there with that rear slick coming out. Actually, they’re just putting the tyre-warmers on. - The discussion was SC0 or SCX. - Yeah, sure. Did they change or not? - My feeling is no, because they decided too late. - Ten seconds to unplug, ten seconds. - At the end, Toprak said SCX, but Phil told him it was too late. You’d imagine intermediate tyres will be the call of action... That’s a slick there for Jonathan Rea! - I was going to say, it didn't look like it! - And for Toprak as well! Everyone staying out there on the dry weather tyre. For Jonathan Rea, he’s changed onto that SC0 tyre. Fwoah, f***ing hell. This is the moment where teams have done all they can. Suddenly, the riders are left alone on the racetrack. We go down to the last day of the season to settle the 2021 crown. Lights out on Race 1! - It’s wet on that side. - Cool. Redding tipping it in a little late and Toprak gets through. And Tom Sykes right on the pace and right on the case. Jonathan Rea turns into Turn 1 but he can’t get there. Toprak is already through. Razgatlioglu hits the front in Race 1! We ride onboard now with Jonathan Rea. Nothing to choose between himself and Razgatlioglu. Look at Bassani having a go at Jonathan Rea as they come in towards Turn 12! - Go on Axel. - Bassani P2. And here goes Axel Bassani on Toprak Razgatlioglu, Turn 10 of Lap 5. Bassani has fought his way through the field quite superbly. He moves Bassani out of the way! - Bravo, Jonathan. - He’s passed him, Jonny’s leading. Razgatlioglu now will be aggressive on Bassani. He puts himself back into a title-winning position. But he’s taking risks anyway! They’re going to touch! Surely, they’re going to touch! Just about, Jonathan Rea squeezes out of the way and Toprak Razgatlioglu forces his way to the front on Lap 9 of 20. Rea makes his pass! I’ve said he’s been strong through this final sector all race long. Ladies and gentlemen, if you’re just joining WorldSBK, this is what we’ve been treated to all season long. And here goes Redding! Scott Redding down the inside of Jonathan Rea through 15 and 16. That’s exactly what Jonathan Rea wouldn’t have been wanting to see. Wide! Very wide from Toprak Razgatlioglu! - Woah! - Vamos. Scott Redding is your new race leader. Jonathan Rea is through on Scott Redding! Toprak wants to get the title won now. He wants to get through on Scott Redding. He knows he’s got a chance. - No, but don’t drop back, we need him second! - Scott’s front is finished. - He’s on an SC1, is he? - He will be, he’s on a Ducati. - Let me check... F*** it, who cares. Redding leaves the door wide open for Razgatlioglu! He will still have the inside on the switchback for Turn 17. This could be a title-winning overtake from Toprak Razgatlioglu! He’s back into second place! If he stays there, even with Jonathan Rea in front of him, he will be World Champion. This is the last lap. Half a lap to go, Russ. It's only six tenths ahead of this final lap! He’s going after the race win, let alone the championship! It’s been six years for Jonathan Rea, but Rea’s reign has come to an end. A new era has begun in WorldSBK! The 2021 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Champion is Toprak Razgatlioglu! - Mate, you deserve this. Congratulations. - Thank you very much. Recording! When you crossed the finish line, you knew you were World Champion, you saw your pitboard, what was the first thing that went through your mind? Finished! Season finished! I just thought this. Also, you know, this year my dream was to win this championship for my dad. I said this, this was my dream. - Your father would be proud. - Yes, very. - Thank you very much. He’s dealt with a lot of tragedy in his life, with the loss of his father at a young age. Toprak is just a genuinely lovely person and he is a team player in the truest sense of the word. - Because he’s painted me a lot of times. He knows me. - My face is a little bit… - It’s just your first time. - You deserve it. Congratulations. Just my curiosity. You use number 54, like Kenan. But, we are curious to know, will you use number 1? I spoke with Kenan about this number. The Yamaha… I don’t remember seeing it with a number 1? I think it’s time for number 1. The other guys, they’re taking notes. They’re upping their game. The racing, particularly amongst that top three group of Jonathan, Scott and Toprak has just been a brawl every single weekend and I don’t expect anything different. - Oh, I love this. - The 65 is... - Look at this. This is my happiest memories, joining this team and my first year here. Back to 65 next year. That really makes me want to step up. I’m sure it makes my team want to step up. We’re going to work really hard in the off-season and look forward to '22. We can improve. We have many new parts. We can also improve my style, I don’t know. Maybe we can improve in wet conditions. Next year, we’ll come back stronger. He’s still a young guy, still a 25-year-old now, so he’s got a bit of improving to do. The potential is quite big. But, I think I’m not really special. I think.
