hey everybody you having simon here and today we got a fun video that i've actually wanted to make for a while looking at fuji cameras and how i relate them to cameras like my sony like my compacts like my cell phones but mostly the focus of this video is not a technical but a personal comparison of the xt series the xt3 in this case the xe series the x e3 in this case and the x100v now when you're watching this video yes there's maybe new versions of this camera this is the newest version of the x100 this is not the newest version of the xe3 or the xt3 the version 4 is out the version 4 of the xt3 has image stabilization is to me the main feature but one of the beauties that i found about using fuji cameras is they age really well even the older versions work very similar they sometimes have different features and improvements but a lot of times people are actually going out looking for the older versions of these cameras for cost reasons or for aesthetic reasons sometimes in the case for example of the x pro 2 or the new x pro 3 that has kind of a weird flippy screen that some people including me don't like very much so if i was buying an expert i would actually buy the older version not the newer version because even though the sensor is slightly older the aesthetics are better and it's not a marked difference because all of the fuji cameras in their given generation use that same aps-c sensor it's not quite full-frame and there's an advantage for that at times i think and i'm going to talk about that a little bit but mainly we're going to focus on these three and kind of the how and the why because they say they say the best camera is the one you have with you which a lot of times is our cell phone and admittedly they've gotten great with iphones and this is a s21 ultra and a lot of different brands really competing for camera marketing cell phones well they're pretty amazing but it's not the same as dare i say a real camera and what if i really want to get hot and ready on the streets did i just say hot and ready can i say that can i say hot and ready on the streets but no sometimes i really want to get out there and i want to get the grid i want to get the rain that's why i bought the x100v in the past couple years about two and a half years ago maybe two years ago i bought the xe3 as my test into fuji cameras i'd always shot with canon and then sony when they really stepped ahead with their mirrorless cameras i switched to sony full frame uh this was actually my first sony full frame the a7r ii and it's still a phenomenal camera with its 40 megapixels and i can get glorious prints for video and for more low-res stuff i have the a7 3 which i'm actually filming this with right now so that i can have all these over here the bottom line though is that a camera is two different things it's a tool but it's also a tool for inspiration not just a tool for capturing the image because the cameras are just tools the image really needs to come from here it needs to come from our mind's eye and new photographers often think they can just take a great camera and it's going to get great photos but that's not how it works because they go on the streets and they have a photo in the midday of a waterfall or they have a photo at high noon of a person's back walking down the street and there's no drama there's no emotion there's no life there's no rain there's no storm there's no laughing there's no anger there's no golden sun rays things like that so the good light is important but also the emotion that's something i've been discovering even though i knew it i've been discovering it more and challenging myself more as i've done more with street photography and tried to push myself to overcome that intimidation just like for the past year so i've pushed myself to do more fashion portrait that kind of stuff to challenge my lighting and on one hand doing kind of documentary journalism and on the other hand doing more planned lit trying to fill in the areas that i feel like i can improve in and we should always be doing that as image makers regardless of whether we have degrees or certifications or awards or any of that thing i've been taking photos for 20 years now and i've learned the more time goes by the more i have to learn we're going to look at some images from each of these cameras today guys and i'm going to try not to go too long i have a 90 mil on here but as you can see behind me i have a lot of vintage glass i have a lot of different fuji lenses that i put on these one of the things i like about fuji is their lenses aren't crazy these little f2 primes for fuji like this 50 mil right here you can buy an xc3 the xc4 is out now so this actual model of the xc3 you can probably pick up for five or six hundred dollars of uh three or four hundred dollars for a 50 mil f2 that's not a lot of money for a good professional grade we're not talking crappy kit lens most of the lenses i use are the fuji prime f2s on these fuji cameras if i'm not shooting my vintage glass and that's another video love vintage glass for portraits but native glass i'm shooting the fuji the lenses for the sony if i get a g master lens or something like that or even not a g master lens most of my lenses for my sony are upwards of six upwards of a thousand dollars this one was the 16 to 35 for landscapes on this was around 2 000. so these big full-frame glass they cost a lot they're bigger they're heavier and when i shoot with sony i shot with sony for years before i bought a fuji they take great images and i'm not here to dis on sony because sony especially in hybrid video if you're shooting video and stills high resolution full frame they're they're right up there at the top right now and of course you got canon and nikon and olympus and lots of other brands they all make great cameras but the point is i can go out and i know i'm going to get great images but the aesthetic is different it doesn't have that organic classic feel how do i describe it when i use a sony and i like my sonys if i'm shooting full frame i had sony crop sensor for a while in the 6000 series didn't inspire me very much and i'm like no i'm going to sell this and i'm going to try the fuji crop sensor fuji is much more dedicated to the crop sensor system with their lenses well designed for the system sony is more dedicated to full frame so i said no i'm going to use sony for full frame and fuji which one do i use most hands down my fuji's if i'm going out for a portrait session if i'm shooting the street it's my fuji's my sony's i use for video although the xt3 is also a great hybrid video shooter but the sony's in low light because of that full frame really great sensor are gonna probably excel as well as their focus probably excel but we're not going to do a technical review i'm talking about the feelings you might be looking at any one of these fuji's and thinking of it in relation to your other kit and where does it fit in and that's what i'm trying to help out with is tell you how i kind of followed along that journey when i shoot a sony i feel kind of like it's a it's a computer with a camera and when i shoot a fuji i feel like it's more of a camera with a computer because i love dials when i'm out in the field shooting i love a dial for iso i love a dial for shutter speed and for exposure compensation and yes we can program dials on the sony's but it's not the same that's all i can tell you when you get it in your hand and you shoot with it and maybe some of you will hate it and some people not but most people when they pick up and they go out shooting with a fuji they're like i like shooting with this so i got into fuji because i wanted a camera that inspired me to shoot more and it did it worked and that's why i just bought this new x100v because i'll explain in a minute let's talk about these three cameras and when you might use them now of course there's more in the fuji lineup there's newer cameras the xcx pro would be somewhere in here and would do a lot of what these two would do the xt the dslr style and you can get into the xh1 the xh2 but i would say the best value all around if you want to do everything and you're doing some video is the xt series the xt3us like this one or if you want to spend a little more get the x t4 with its image stabilized sensor in body image stabilization and things like that but your image quality is going to be very similar on all these even though these two have a little bit newer sensor than the xc3 which i believe shares the same sensor correct me if i'm wrong with the x pro 2 but this one this one the new xt4 and the x pro 3 i believe i'll share the same sensor but maybe there's been an incremental version since then so don't hate me if i'm wrong on that give me a like anyways or don't give me a like give me a down vote if you want if i'm wrong because you know what gavin you suck no just kidding let's move on if i'm going out for portraits i'm going to pick up the xt3 and i'm going to actually swing over here i'm going to show you a few of those images let's go to the screen and i've got some images here and you can see mostly what i'm shooting with the xt3 is my portrait fashion weddings it's when i'm going out for a job i want fast focus it's weather sealed i'm going to put on portrait lenses i'm going to mix it up i'm going to put on vintage i want a good feel in the hand i don't need to be super small i don't need to be invisible and the portraits that come out of this just work you're seeing a lot of different lenses but probably the lens that i use the most on the xt3 for portraits or for portraits period is fuji's 90 mil f2 for the great compression the great f2 bokeh i also love the little 50 mil so if you're starting out and you want to lengthen smaller that's more carriable maybe you're just getting one or two lenses get a 50 ml and maybe a 23 or 35 for wider angle things and you've got a fuji kit most of these were done on 50 mil or 90 mil or some variant of a vintage lens in probably the 50 to 58 mil focal range to get these different looks i'm not always going for the sharpest when i'm doing a portrait and so sometimes i'm going to put on that vintage lens that gives me that aesthetic or i'm going to take it like this image into black room and really do kind of a subtle lo-fi portrait edit the bottom line is here whatever i need to shoot the colors you can see the dynamic range you can see yes the fuji has great built-in profiles of color but i think sometimes people over hype those a little bit because what i'm going to do most the time is shoot raw maybe with a medium-sized jpeg baked in for an instax print or for immediately uploading to instagram because fuji's color profiles are good but they're nothing that you can't do in a preset or yourself with manual sliders in fact when there was all the rage of the classic negative that came out in the xt3 and the xt4 generation of cameras people were like wow this is great this profile is great and everybody was using classic neg for a while and i made a virtually identical copy that could use on any fujifile or any other file for that matter for lightroom and for capture one an extension of my filmis presets and i put that out there for free just to show hey you know what profiles are great and if that's what inspires you use those but i'm also shooting raw even on the x100v where i will usually shoot black and white because i'm thinking in black and white on the street so i'm going to switch my mode to black and white and i'm gonna shoot in black and white so that i'm seen in black and white and while i actually am shooting a medium jpeg so the across profile or whatever i put on there is baked in and it looks great or maybe i'll switch to color and use velvia or something like that at times but i'm also shooting that raw so i can come in here and have the full dynamic range the full control now let's switch back over to the screen again because you're going to see files from this xe3 now these vary while i'm mostly shooting job type work and portraits and or video with the xt series cameras because it's a great all rounder but not the smallest when i take the xc3 out it might be i'm going for a day trip maybe i'm planning to do some casual portraits so i'll i want to travel light and i'll take a 23 mil or a 35 equivalent for street for candids and i'll just grab a 50 to stay small a 50 is about at 80 mil equivalent which is also great for portraits even though i love the 90 the 80 f2 is compact and it makes great portraits and so a lot of what you see in these xc3 images is the 50 the 90 sometimes the 35 or in the case of the street images a lot of times my 23 the 35 equivalent all these f2s that i'm using on the fuji to do streets these are all xc3s the portraits we saw prior to these were the xt3 so you can see i can really mix it up i can do great street work i can do fine art type landscape work and i can do portrait work all on the xt excuse me the xe3 in a compact body and have that interchangeable lens right down to my recent street image that you may have seen me do a few videos on this channel about how i got this one shot on this xt3 right here with a 23 mil f2 or 35 millimeter full frame equivalent okay so what's the downside the xc3 is more of a budget entry level fuji and it's great if you want to get started it was the first fuji camera that i bought and it is really versatile it feels great in the hand the fit and finish isn't quite as perfect you can see i have small grips on these right here on the xt3 and the xe3 so it's making them slightly bigger but not a lot and you can see if you look close the rubber actually on the native grip is peeling on the xt3 so i need to kind of glue it back on and my grip's kind of holding everything in place and still making it feel good in my hand but that rubber there kind of started to fail and get sticky and that's one of the things the only downside that i've had about the x e3 except in the ring and that's what actually prompted me recently to buy this because i wanted to stay inspired with my street work and it's been the monsi monsoon season here down in mexico and i've been getting these images in the weather and i'm loving it like i just love going out in the rain because everything changes things that would normally be boring people walking down the street people bustling around buying food going to the taco stand things like that all the light everything becomes more magical in the rain and of course it's a little uncomfortable but what you worry about most of us more is ruining your camera and i almost did i got a few raindrops in the play button and it quit working correctly and i dried it out with my blower and it seems to be fine but i've used this xe3 heavily and it's got some signs of that wear and that's okay but i didn't want to ruin it in the rain so i got this x100v even though when i first saw this when this first came out what a year year and a half ago right i'm not i'm not the first jumper in or jump or enter should i say that on the x 100 series because i'm like no i'm not paying 1400 respectively for a camera i can't even change the lens it's a 35 millimeter fixed you can see i have it set up here with a how lens hood and a filter inside to protect it as well as to complete the weather ceiling so i can use it in the rain this feels amazing in the hand this feels great in the hand too but when i'm on the street just that knowing that there's only one lens and i actually before i bought this i said you know what i'm going to take my fuji xe3 i'm going to force myself to use that 23 or 35 equivalent for a month because it wasn't a focal i used a lot being trained in portraiture and things like that i oftentimes wanted a little longer focal length like a 35 50 equivalent or a 50 80 equivalent but on the street unless you're really like aiming in there that can be hard now yes i'm trying to feel more comfortable aiming the camera and not being worried if someone gives me a side long look but being able to shoot from the hip can be really valuable to get candid moments on the street and when you get to that 23 or 35 or wider equivalent focal length you start being able to just casually do this the x 100 is great for that because that's all it's going to be yes they sell some teleconverters so i could make it a 50 ml equivalent they also sell a 28 ml equivalent but the 35 millimeter equivalent on this is really working and once you learn to think in terms of that 35 to place yourself where you need to be to move around it can work really well would i go out and shoot exclusively a wedding with this well i could and it would look good because it's a great camera the results are great in fact let's look at some of the results from the x100 now bear in mind i don't have as many because i've only had this for a few weeks but so far i'm loving it i'm shooting the same kind of images i would shoot on the xc3 but a little more compact a little faster a little quieter with that leaf shutter and join having the optical and the digital viewfinder that the others do not have you can see for portraits if it's a casual documentary kind of portrait or at a wedding or something like that it's good but you don't have that nice beautiful compression and bokeh that you're going to get with a 50 ml or a 90 ml on another camera great dynamic range very compact very discreet that's why i bought the black version if i'm shooting a portrait session or something like that i don't mind standing out but if i'm shooting street shooting from the hip want to get people's natural responses this camera works because i look like a tourist which isn't always a bad thing but i also look good looking like a tourist at least at least i think i look good looking like a tourist but i digress the results the dynamic range the sensor is giving me the same quality on this very small little camera and i think having that small size is allowing me to get images that i wouldn't otherwise just the aesthetic the way the dials work the way i can not worry if i take it out in the rain and all that providing i have a lens hood you do have to put a lens hood and a filter on this to complete the weather sealing which to me actually gives it some extra protection and makes it look really great and even though i'm normally shooting black and white and then i'm editing in black room i better name with silver four presets something like that even something like this that i took an image and i went to natural hdr3 to get a more high dynamic range look it's holding up the dynamic range is there the raw files are great and it just looks good all of these cameras are good this sony camera is good this rx100 seven is good but if i'm shooting street well it's a great vlogging camera because it has the flippy up front facing screen it has really good quality it's small i can put a little cage a little mic on it the truth is i don't use it that much it's not super sturdy it doesn't feel rock solid in my hand i don't feel like i can throw it in the cup holder like i'm going to do with these cameras yes i'm careful with my gear but i want to use it i don't want these in a bag when i'm out driving and yes sometimes i'm taking images and getting good images through the windshield just because i have to move fast or i want to hop out of the car i just want to grab it and go the compact cameras that are out there even with a one inch sensor on a sony like this it's a great little camera but the quality is not as good as a fuji the low light is not as good as a fuji but most importantly to me the aesthetics and the feel and that comes back to my original point is the best camera is the one that you want to use all the time that you're going to take with you that you're going to have with you because you want to use it not that you're going to have with you just because you have it if it's all i have i'll certainly use my cell phone video wise i can get great images or vlogs from a cell phone in fact that's why i don't honestly use this a lot now if i'm doing a more serious shoot i'm going to take a sony i'm going to take an xt3 i'm going to take an rx100 and not use the cell phone because obviously they're going to get better video any of those three are going to get better video than even an iphone 13 and s21 ultra like this but if i'm going out and i want to be inspired taking photos i'm going to pick up the fuji's and that's been the point of this video is simply to kind of compare and contrast how my journey has carried me to being a canon shooter to being a sony shooter and i actually still have a camera i have a canon 5d mark ii infrared back there that i use occasionally it's not about the camera you use the camera you pick is not going to make you a great photographer but the camera you pick might help inspire you the camera you buy this year or next year and one of the reasons that i'm always trying new cameras is to see how it inspires me to be creative in a different way a different format a different size a different perspective if someone came out with a camera that only shot square like a hasselblad but there was a compact in like a one and a half inch square sensor how weird would that be but you know what i might want it because it would give me a different perspective and the subtle details do make a difference the subtle details like this functioning like a film camera with its dials do make a difference do i buy fuji cameras because they have nicer color profiles baked in than a sony does absolutely not because all these are as presets in camera we can do those in post and yes i know i'm a person who what i'm most known for is making presets making photoshop actions things like that and trying to make that kind of editing easier for people but editing good color grades isn't hard so while it's great to have really fun useful organic feeling color profiles in the fuji i buy the fuji personally and i use the fuji because i want to shoot with it which one should you get if you're looking at one of these three series well if you want to do video and photo and weddings and portraits and you want an all-rounder it's hard to beat the xt series the xt3 the xt4 if you're looking for an entry level and you can get by without weather sealing and be careful and cover it with a bag or your shirt or something if there's a little rain well the xc3 cheap used or the xc4 the new version as of the making of this video really good if you really just want to force yourself into one focal length and do street and have something weather sealed and feel good while the x100v is really phenomenal or the x100f the previous generation is going to be cheaper however one of the big features on the new version of the x100 is this f2 23 millimeter lens is a lot better than the previous generations in fact the f223 on this x100v is known to be better and sharper than the 23 millimeter f2 on the interchangeable lens versions however as you saw from the images this 23 millimeter r2 is a great little lens just in my opinion like all these little f2 primes from sony up to the not so little f2 90 millimeter i actually have another video here on the channel comparing all these fuji not sony f2 primes and looking at different focal lengths how they affect in landscapes how the compression effects in portraits so check out that video if you're unsure about what lens you want for what if i had to choose two lenses right now it will probably be a 23 35 millimeter equivalent and a 50 ml for a little closer up and doing great portraits and so with those two right here i have a kit that i could go out and shoot all weekend with and get great results the xt series a little bit better for video the rangefinder kind of styles including even though i don't have it the x pro 2 the x pro 3 if you're okay with the way they've designed the screen on that great results great street shooter a little bigger than the x 100 but at the end of the day decide what you want to shoot and if you want to play it safe maybe go in the middle with an xe series or an xt3 if you could handle it being a little larger but if i want to be discrete and i didn't have the x100v i'm using the xe but now if i want to be discreet and i'm going down the streets and what i carry with me all the time is the x100v it looks good it feels good it functions good it's not perfect and i know this review hasn't been so much on the technical merits or the specs of any of these cameras all i wanted to share with you guys today is how i feel about these cameras how they make me want to shoot or not want to shoot how it compares to using other cameras and show you a little bit of the results that i'm getting i'm going to cut this off because i'm going to go too long i hope you found this useful let me know in the comments give me a like give me a sub that will be even greater greater and i'll see you guys next time if you don't like it give it a thumbs down and won't want one i understand but i'm doing the best i can to share my thoughts on these cameras with you here in 2021 all right take care guys
