fsu is returning one of the most dynamic dual threat quarterbacks in the country in jordan travis however head coach mike norvell wasted no time in the off season ensuring that he was comfortable with his quarterback room in the short term by bringing in transfer mckenzie milton from ucf the quarterbacks this year can potentially be a bright spot on this football team and here to discuss them with me is my crew from the triple option trey rowland and adam brown hey everybody welcome to the special we got it football is back and the triple option is here to guide you through it this is the first of our multi-part position preview series it's going to be a little bit different than what we've done in the past i would like to give you guys big fat episode burgers to chew on these will be tiny smaller episode sliders each position is going to be broken up into its own video so you can consume them uh at your leisure today our first video this is the quarterbacks this is the one this is the premiere this is the money position we're gonna get into that before that subscribe to the x's and knowles youtube channel set your notifications on so you can see as soon as we drop all these videos because we're doing every single position offensive defense and i know you want to be the first to watch it because you're cool you're just a cool guy or gal so you just want to watch it first so do that also new announcement we have a patreon page that's right patreon.com slash x's and knowles um it's mostly going to go towards like video equipment so just as long as you guys love these videos you want to support really what what kevin's doing and what adam's doing i'm just the i'm just the face guy i'm just the uh the empty vacuous um yeah exactly i'm just yeah i'm just in it i'm just a pretty suit a pretty face but if you want to support the money men the idea men the video men go to patreon.com and just throw throw kev some duckets man so we get some better video and just to make the show you love that much better all right is that enough anything else we need to add as far as housekeeping yay or nay let's move on good kevin we're talking quarterback and i want to we're going to set these videos up we're first going to kind of explain the role of this position ideally in mike norvell's offense then we're going to kick it to a discussion of the actual players themselves kevin an ideal mike norvell quarterback is there one and if there is what does he do yeah so that's the beautiful thing about mike norvell's offense right so he uh he had a pocket passer in memphis was incredibly successful with brady white behind quarterback a guy that's not very mobile and honestly isn't super accurate and then you have last year he had jordan travis made a competent acc offense out of using jordan travis and a bunch of spare parts he could find and so you can see that his his offense is very versatile and he can pretty much plug and play whichever quarterback or kind of quarterback you want at that position and now it seems that mike norvell can do a lot of things with different he always he always um cultivates the offense to the personnel but i think was last year with jordan travis really the first year that his offense showcased a running quarterback the other ones he's had in the past i mean brady white and whoever else he's had it's really been about pushing the ball vertically right kev yeah he had one in arizona state when he was offensive coordinator there but outside of that he has uh he does prefer to be to have the guys that that want to push the ball downfield want to win those one-on-one matchups on the outside so passing concepts what are the type of throws that this quarterback's gonna have to make so by far the most popular throw he's gonna try to throw and you saw it a lot in the um spring game that we'll get to is he likes these little fade routes that i'm sure you could see better if it wasn't in black on a blackboard uh i liked it both we want to challenge the viewer it's not just we're not just getting freebies here guys you got to pay attention so if he if he sees one-on-one matchups he wants to take this this deep ball with all of this space towards the sideline um it gives freedom for both the wide receiver and the quarterback to to make that completion and honestly it's something that our our foresee for scene starter excels at well and not a lot of just to kind of differentiate it from the the passing heavy like jimbo stuff jimbo fisher likes a lot of the kind of the middle game pack kind of like a ball control passing style offense mike norvell is not like that right guys it's all verticality verticality verticality great yeah yep all right way more aggressive all right so let's talk let's talk people adam it's really a two horse race at this point we've got the aforementioned jordan travis and then we've got the transfer in from ucf mckenzie milton kev let's go to mackenzie milton first and let's just see what kind of what kind of tape we got on him he's a guy that we've covered extensively on this show but as we're talking adam is this a true quarterback battle or is this a quarterback battle and name only in your opinion i think that in their i think it in their best their best case scenario is that this is not a battle the milton chess has had this summer now to really grasp the playbook understand it is healthy enough you know he's claimed he's 100 but you know even if he's 85 90 of what he was at ucf he's able to come out there and kind of seize this uh but seize this position and make it his own you know through his leadership ability and all those different uh traits that he you know you kind of brought him in for so i i think that in their heart of hearts if you gave them the old truth serum they'd tell you that they don't want this to be a battle i think they'll present this to be a battle though um through through uh summer i mean heck why do you need to name a starter why not give why not make notre dame worry about all that running stuff that they saw last year that they couldn't handle they they struggled to stop jordan travis last year so why not make them worry about that stuff but i think in the end it's not really a battle i think this is mackenzie milton's job assuming his health is fine and i think you're going to see a lot of jordan travis though so i mean to say that this is mackenzie milton's job is great but i think jordan travis has a role in his offense i think you see him you know we saw a lot of uh of wildcat last year with j-sean corbin in the backfield well why not create that package and build it around jordan travis because there's no more dynamic runner uh on the football field or on this team than jordan travis what could jordan travis do in fall camp to make this a closer battle than we think it is at this moment he's going to have to really develop his game more as a pastor and we saw him come along i mean everybody was really hyped about that throat i thought it was a terrible throw personally why is that you're just asking to get picked against against a really good team that's not winning football play right there in my opinion but what you do like about this is that he's scrambling and normally he would take off but he's got his eyes downfield so that that's the big positive you're getting out of it i agree i agree and it was completion so i mean it's nice to say i didn't like it but hey it all worked out but he saw open open field and he saw his man so but jordan's really gonna have to develop more as a pastor he's got to be able to consistently drop back and make throws and it's not something he's been capable of doing he's very much a a one-read guy i mean he's got to be able to kind of come off one reed go to a next he's gonna be able to reset his feet and throw the football accurately but he's the biggest thing they've got he's got to be able to work the middle of the field i mean that was a place that they weren't able to exist last year some of it is ongoing because he's you know shorter maybe not so confident throwing the ball in the middle of the field some of it poor offensive line play so i mean i there's there is a uh there's definitely a road map for him to be a starting quarterback at florida state i just don't think it's going to be this year with mackenzie milton as the starter according like it's all opinion guys is just kind of our now fall camp hasn't even started yet this is just what we kind of think is going to happen what percentage um i guess what percentage of the offensive snaps do you think we see jordan travis on the field if he is in fact not the starter that is a good question i was actually talking to zach talking to a good friend of the show bud elliott not long ago we were little name drops yeah a little dangerous uh so we were kind of bantering back and forth about what we thought i told bud i thought uh travis plays probably about a hundred and a hundred to 150 snaps at quarterback this year we're all doing mental math over here yeah i know i i i mean what they play 13 how many 12 13 games probably 50 60 snaps a game well well i mean if you're you know if your chip kelly you wanted to run 90 off please i mean i guess maybe 70. yeah i think 70 is probably safe so i mean what that's 10 tennis snaps a game at quarterback maybe yeah that sounds about right i was going to say about 15 i like it i like it kev anything anything to add on kind of the main on the battle and we'll we'll we'll talk about the the third string guys for just a second to give them to kind of give them the shine but anything else in addition to the mackenzie milton jordan travis thing that have you had adam didn't mention kevin yeah so i think that there's a certain priming they're doing for for jordan travis um they they definitely are keeping him in the loop as if he's gonna be a prominent part of the offense and i think that moving forward he's gonna become even more of the of an influence on how the offense takes shape and i think they do have hope that he develops that um passing game to the middle of the field makes those easy throws across the middle of the field because if you can get them to make those consistent throws and kind of learn a thing or two from mackenzie milton then you know a couple years from now he could be a really special quarterback chubba purdy tate roadmaker two true freshmen that saw some saw some time last year tate rodemaker a little up a little down kev's guy not going to beat him up too hard he was the developmental dude in a regular normal program he shouldn't have seen a snap last year at all uh chubba purdy a very talented prospect who has been derailed by a multitude of just injuries and other things um who's qb3 and you guys opinion and what are you looking from either chubb or tate for next year adam go first i certainly listed trouble purely based on talent i think realistically if you had to if you probably had to go with one it's got to be taped just because of reliability um but i think you know you're hoping the trouble went home for the for the summer and there's all kinds of rumors about where he was and when he was coming back and if he was coming back and all this all that nonsense but uh he's here i mean he's gonna be dead he's here he's gonna be a fall camp uh the talent is undeniable so you're hoping that he can show some maturity kind of maybe grab a hold of that third quarterback position and you know who knows maybe get a couple reps here and there and maybe blowouts i don't know what are those let's not be um kev what do you think bro you agree with adam or yeah i think i think ab nailed it uh chubb is definitely the the better prospect come a few years from now um but tate is kind of the you know mr reliable mr technique he does the things he's going to be the practice all-star a lot of in in the spring practices chubba was nowhere to be seen and tate actually looked like one of the best quarterbacks on the field for a lot of those spring practices until we got to the spring scrimmage and i i honestly feel like it's one of those situations where tate's just a practice all-american kind of feel um uh he's the guy that goes goes in and does what he needs to do and does what he's supposed to do but um it's yet to be seen if he will ever be able to to stand up in the in the lights and and perform when it comes down to it so i think you put tate in first before chubba if you have to put in a quarterback but they're going to be looking for reasons to get chubb in the game sure that makes sense so at the end of these position previews i think i want to i want to do like a like a grade on them i don't want to do like a letter grade or anything like that but i want to talk about each unit whether it could be a potential strength a solid contributor or a potential liability to the success of this team how do you guys based on those three criteria where do you grade quarterback i think it's a strength i mean right i mean you've got two guys with game experience you've got two guys that are dynamic in their own right i mean i i don't know it feels weird if you could put them both together i think that you'd have maybe the best quarterback in america um i i think it's a strength for this team i don't know if it would be considered a strength for all the other teams in america but again you've got jordan travis who is probably you've got to consider the most dynamic running quarterback in america right i mean it's definitely up there yeah if not if not the most he's one of and mackenzie milton's record and his statistics speak for themselves um you know a lot of people will say that he had that one great year with the with the nfl wide receiver but his numbers have been great other outside of that also so i i yeah i mean i think saying any saying it's not a strength would be a disservice to what those two have kind of done already kev yeah mackenzie milton two years ago would have been thought of as the third fourth best quarterback in in america like if if we can have 80 of that then for for this team that's that's a big plus yeah um so i'm gonna say so you think it's a strength too yeah i think it's definitely a strength no matter who's in the game i think even last year jordan travis was probably one of the bright spots on that offense last year here comes contrarian trench i'm gonna say it's a strength asterisk like the old houston astros world series it's a strength if you can get 80 to 85 percent out of mackenzie milton which i don't think is honestly a sure thing and it's a strength if your offensive line which we'll be talking about in future units can be a solid contributor or not get decimated by injuries to where you've got a guy mackenzie milton coming off a devastating leg injury is just getting pummeled into the ground you get mackenzie milton hurt game three then you take a unit that could be a potential strength and you have one with jordan travis if he doesn't make the the necessary gains that we think he's going to that's still up in the air too uh you take a quarterback that we've acknowledged is pretty flawed throwing the ball down the field and he was the strength last year on a win team so i i if there wasn't so much variability in this unit so many unknowns which is a lot of the reasons why we got mckenzie belton in the first place i would tend to agree with you guys if you could sign me up for a pretty much almost full healthy season of an 80 to 85 percent mckenzie milton i would consider it a strength too with all that kind of guesswork in there i'm just going to put it as a contributor on the team so that would be that would be my reigning on the parade right before we end this video disagree yell at me in the comments while also giving us a thumbs up that is the first of our position preview series boys quarterback is going to be fun i hope i'm wrong and i hope 2017 mckenzie milton is out there just pow pow pow shooting shooting puka shells all over the field and eating poke on the sidelines and having just a great time well if you had a great time like i said subscribe to x's knowles youtube go to the patreon throw kevin some duckets so we can get some sweet video and join us for our next line of the preview series which we're going to be looking at the running backs which i'm very excited about keep chopping see you later
