[Music] [Music] [Music] the lord heard and had mercy on me the lord became my helper in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you my brothers and sisters prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries let us first call to mind our sins i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly seen in my thoughts and in my words and what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of the virgin of the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy let us pray we shall gracious favor our lord we pray for the works of penance we have begun that we may have strength to accomplish with sincerity the bodily observances we undertake through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever a reading from the prophet isaiah thus says the lord shout for all you are worth raise your voice like a trumpet proclaim their faults to my people their sins to the house of jacob they seek me day after day they long to know my ways like a nation that wants to act with integrity and not ignore the law of its god they ask me for laws that adjust they long for god to draw near why should we fast if you never see it why do penance if you never notice look you do business on your feet fast days you oppress all your workmen look you quarrel and squabble when you fast and strike the poor man with your fist fasting like yours today will never make your voice heard on high is that the sort of fast that pleases me a truly penitential day for men hanging your head like a reed lying down on sackcloth or nashes is that what you call fasting a day acceptable to the lord is not this the sort of fast that pleases me it is the lord who speaks to break unjust fitters and undo the thongs of the yolk to let the oppressed go free and break every yoke to share your bread with the hungry and shelter the homeless poor to clothe the man you seem to be naked and not turn from your own kin then will your light shine like the dawn and your wound quickly healed over your integrity will go before you and the glory of the lord behind you cry and the lord will answer call and he will say i am here the word of the lord a broken humbled heart oh god you will not scorn have mercy on me god in your kindness in your compassion blot out my offense i wash me more and more from my guilt and cleanse me from my sin my offences truly i know them my sin is always before me against you you alone have i sinned what is evil in your sight i have done [Music] for in sacrifice you take no delight burnt offering from me you would refuse my sacrifice a contrite spirit a humbled contrite heart you will not spurn please stand to greet our gospel glory and praise to you lord jesus christ seek good and not evil so that you may live and the lord will be with you glory and praise to you lord jesus christ the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew john's disciples came to jesus and said why is it that we and the pharisees fast your disciples do not jesus replied surely the bridegroom's attendance would never think of mourning as long as the bridegroom is still with them but the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from them and then they will fast the gospel of the lord how many ways the lord is present to us and is worth meditating on on a regular basis especially when we come in here apart from the first reality our first reality that we are made in the image and likeness of god when we come into this beautiful place we're not just in a church that would be good enough would it not a church is a bricks and mortar example of our very selves as the body of christ when we come into this church we come into the mother of all churches for the broken bay diocese we sit only meters away from the cathedral the preaching throne for the entire diocese many meters away from the altar where christ is represented made present again and we're here as if we were as if we were at calvary the presence of christ in the tabernacle where we do not merely just bow as a symbol but we gen reflect to the reality we come here for the mass the greatest prayer that a christian can give god receive the eucharist in his body and his blood and his soul and into his divinity his body and blood become our body and blood and we become like him only the most lovesick romantic of lovers speak like that but for us as catholics that's the reality so through the religions of history even the false religions they never made the claims that we catholics realize when we receive the eucharist how close our god is that us to us that his body and blood would become our body and blood and yet in so many other ways the lord is not with us inasmuch as we are away from the lord that's what simple meant when he said to the in his second letter to the corinthians while we are in this body we are away from the lord and so we represent in particular during lent the difficulty of being away from the lord during lent we we do not pray the gloria we do not even say the word alleluia we take the flowers away from the sanctuary priests and bishops even the pope himself will wear purple which in our catholic culture is a symbol of repentance in so many ways we are not with the lord yet yet nothing keeps us away from the lord more than our sins nothing drives out his presence like sin and there's a faithful attempt to change this we do penance during lent if you've ever met somebody unless you have a doubt that it's um a fruitless exercise you ever meet somebody who is lamenting someone's death they're leaving and they don't go out to parties they don't laugh they don't eat lollies that they don't even they don't even want to dress well anymore we do little acts of penance during lent as a symbol pardon me we do little acts of penance during lent as a symbol that we recognize that we're away from the lord but we don't want to be we want to bring him closer to us and we can do that by good acts to our neighbor and by acts of penance and prayer my dear friends by fasting we give god space in our lives let us ask the lord to strengthen us in self-denial that we may set our minds and hearts firmly on him that is followers of christ we may conform to the precepts of our heavenly father let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that god's people may persevere in their lenten sacrifices let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that all who deny themselves for the lord's sake may find happiness with him let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that the sick and the dying and those who are faced with life sorrow may be filled with god's grace let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer that our deceased relatives and friends may freely share in the life of god let us pray to the lord lord hear our prayer we pray for all those suffering in the ukraine let us pray to the lord pray for all those suffering and those who fear the floods let us pray to the lord and join our prayers the prayers of our heavenly mother with the hail mary hail mary full of grace lord is with thee blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb jesus holy mary mother of god pray for us sinners now at the hour of our death amen heavenly father grant us the strength to devout to devote ourselves to a life in the spirit that we may rise now above our weaknesses and share fully in the resurrection of our lord jesus christ amen blessed are you lord god of all creation for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you free the earth and work of human hands will become for us the bread of life blessed are you lord god of all creation or through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you fruit of the vine and work of human hands it will become our spiritual drink brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty we offer our lord the sacrifice of our latin observance praying that it may make our intentions acceptable to you and add to our powers of self-restraint through christ our lord the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by your gracious gift each year your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts with the joy of minds made pure so that more eagerly intent on prayer and on the works of charity and participating in the mysteries by which they have been reborn they may be led to the fullness of grace that you bestow on your sons and daughters and so with angels and archangels with thrones and dominions with all the hosts and powers of heaven we see the hymn of your glory as without end we acclaim holy holy holy lord god of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord hosanna in the highest you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the jewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith save us savior of the world for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and anthony our bishop and all the clergy remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him a god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from more distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ lord jesus christ who said dear apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you with not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever peace of the lord be with you always let us offer each other the sign of peace lamb of god you take away the sins of the world so uh behold the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be here act of spiritual communion my jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart i embrace you if you were as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen let us pray we pray almighty god that through the partaking of this mystery you may
