france taking that one by three sets to two to upset the uh brazilian fans in curitiba this was the french side arriving earlier today looking in good spirits [Music] a team that have been playing very very well during the preliminary stages a team that finished top of the preliminary round [Music] and a team that are looking to get a victory over brazil yet again they beat them in the preliminary round and they beat them by three sets to nothing she in an easy the only player who won't be playing in this one [Music] arresting him he may well make it back for the medal matches if france could get there this was brazil arriving [Applause] the players making their way off the bus a couple of noticeable absentees lucarelli who's missed all of the v l due to surgery after uh tearing his achilles and fonzeles lipe also not here the other influential outside hitter for this team two players who guided brazil to the gold medal at the olympic games in rio in 2016. two players who will be missed by rayner delzotto the head coach one player who is back with the national team is murillo the former outside hitter who retired but is now back and ready as a libero souza in your picture a player that is doing a really great job in the middle slots this is currently how things uh finished the top eight as it were france top rush to second it was usa third serbia or brazil finishing fifth and qualifying through had a bit of a wobble towards the end and that was how things ended up korea being demoted from the v l and it's portugal who will be coming in next season after winning the challenge cup and the right to be in the b l i'm delighted to be joined by mark levito australian head coach we've already seen one cracking game today between russia and poland that was a great game and we've got another one to come here mark this should be an absolute joy shouldn't it uh i think joy's a great way to describe it it's uh two of the top teams in the world playing against each other the french team's in really good form they're playing at home uh they'll be really fired up brazil did it tough the last couple of rounds to qualify and they needed to win after a big hiccup in round five they needed to win the in the last weekend which they did against australia as it happened in the deciding game and they'll be ready for this one well this was a coin toss earlier on the head referee yeah [Music] this is the head-to-head between the two teams brazil with well a massive lead but that was then and right now it's france who are the form team and that's brought it by [Music] the enigmatic outside hitter for france and wallace de souza [Music] two players with two distinctive styles [Music] yeah they're really two guys that will be fun to watch tonight both of them are a little bit different from anybody else wallace because he's so fast and so dynamic uh anger paired just because he's incapable is the best way to describe it he just plays the game a little bit differently to everybody else he sees things a little bit differently and if you're a volleyball fan you can always learn something about the game just by watching him play oh yeah once watch for france he's been one of the top opposites in the league both of the french opposites have played quite a few matches and done really well boy has been the better of them stylistically he's actually quite similar to uh to wallace on the other side not a big not a big guy but fast and on the ball fast and theirs will actually be a pretty good battle tonight hey well the warm-up has come to an end their middle running but it is brazil who get the ball into transition and take the point that's a nice start when lucas lowe may that be a few nerves for him i don't know that he started in uh it's for brazil there's standing perfectly they've had fans have had no chance to score yet [Applause] the deal would have been better off not blocking the ball that far off from there actually ended up game in terms of approaching hitting his own it works on it won't stay in play massive swing from isaac [Applause] in contrast to the anger wallace has been a much more effective server even though nerfs when they play in a big event the brazilians have come out really focused as i said a moment ago their block and defense is staying perfectly right now obviously it'll take a few moments for the antenna [Applause] [Music] that is from tales this game's definitely got going now it truly is talos has made two or three great defensive plays already it's a guy i hadn't heard of or seen before he could squeeze it through [Music] it's really important how you manage that reception and if you can keep it high enough you can still play fast and look as well as able to score [Applause] [Music] top of his reach and then still eyes it was way above him i think the receiver and santa did a great job there to control [Music] he's got two hands on it and from there isaac had the easiest job of on my camera just a little too tough for france in the end they left it too late but brazilian take the opening set 25-22 brazil went out to the really fast start had that lead in the beginning from 10-6 and it ended up being more or less point for point france could only get back one of those four points so the damage was done at the beginning plants are in a much better rhythm now anger pace playing worlds also getting better chances for his hitters so it'll be interesting how the second set starts [Music] brazil but especially in that beginning part of the set they served really well there was uh all high ball situations for france uh and their blog defense the brazilian block defense was able to neutralize the attack so they had a couple of series even without serving aces [Applause] teams have changed ends here are the highlights from the first set [Music] there's some information from hawkeye about the set of contact points over the course of that first set this is brazil yeah you can see how good their reception was 66 in a really good position against 47 from france that's the position where the center has a chance to play first tempo which forces a opposing middle to stay in the middle of the court anything outside that green circle means that the middle blocker will almost certainly be able to make a double block and that was what we talked about just before about the brazilian server the beginning of the [Music] [Music] there's too many surprises but they they were certainly a little bit more ready to start the match than france but i don't expect that second sets underway tonight with the surf of brazil for france against brazil [Applause] changes for either side [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that one-on-one situation for wallace is just such a disaster for the block he really has no doesn't know where to go wallace can bounce it in both directions [Applause] very lonely feeling [Applause] look at that even though it hasn't after they they haven't had much success getting the brazilians off the net after reception they've got one that's almost an ace the guy comes in from position six to score against a triple bar oh they're balling in from that play from wallace [Applause] [Music] that's one occasion where it is a good set and there's quite the tips on the good [Applause] [Music] incredible defense from france [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] but the brazilians haven't been able to apply the same pressure just yet that they from the service line that they had in the first set that's what their noses been really neck and neck we'll see if france can build a little break here [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] sometimes it's a matter of angling your body in the right direction [Applause] foreign happy to get one hand on that he made himself to put two hands on it and he's playing a perfect set where could not have missed that [Applause] gave wallace is chance to play block out but he just maurizio who blocked the pipe or got a touch on the pipe from anchor pad where he wouldn't normally be expecting the blocker to be turned into a great transition opportunity for brazil [Applause] is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] went up early [Music] [Applause] that fight from bruno wasn't in a really good spot lucas was reaching for it he couldn't get a clean swing at it gave a defensive chance for france and they transitioned really fast it's a great set for the problem [Applause] and the rally is still going to know where the ball is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] really is uh french get the rebound play goes straight into the net engap is actually setting that ball he's not just trying to keep it alive gives them a high ball chance to defend on the next one and then [Music] for everyone to try and be available to put pressure on the opposition block to create those chances in to either [Applause] [Music] opportunities [Music] really unhappy with that because he was keying in on bruno that was his responsibility [Applause] we'll be looking at that as a mana romano battle against [Music] [Applause] i don't want to labor the point but that's the advantage of sitting so close to them and that changes if you're if you aren't going to set that close to the neck [Applause] [Applause] [Music] the block has to be reaching up it's really hard to for the blockers to actually touch that ball it's not impossible as we saw in the previous rally uh wallace blocking and now we see a nice little conversation through the net to get everybody fired up have been shut down and then he's going straight past wallace and then he continues to stare at him through the net to say okay we're good we won a piece lots battles between players going on both sides of the net into the second technical time that's leading by two [Music] it was brazil who had the four-point lead in the to the first technical that they could hold all the way through and this set was france who had a two-point lead really early on brazil haven't been able to make any inroads in that just yet i wonder if the set will progress the same was the first set [Music] if both things playing so well the opportunities for those play coins few and far between [Applause] lucas he seems to be able to do that just about from anywhere anytime when he wants it's the to of knowing each other well they're the same age they've been playing together since they were 14 or 15 they would have made their play thousands and thousands of times in the that we see a lot more now as players willing to hit or attack rather than second contact and we can see how effective it's there it can be right there [Applause] a simple feature of brazil's play in surf although the french are receiving with two rossads not at receiving the float serve so there is some open court there but still to take on one of the top liberals in the world and serve an ace on him is a a real leaders play for bruno we'll see if that can give them a little bit more momentum uh leading into the next second technical timeout some actions from the new cameras we have here at behind the set is really often a good option [Applause] with france he's going to be up to brazil now to challenge the long judge gaming is out fans on their feet aren't celebrating no challenge coming from brazil even from this vantage point they look pretty clear [Music] [Applause] nice work for maurizio just changing it up [Applause] uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] two aces has gotten a slim lead [Applause] trouble here for france free ball [Music] [Music] especially when the spike is hitting from the back row if he doesn't see the block it's really hard for him to get that orientation on the court and you often see them hit that ball into the net while they're looking for the block [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is really frustrated with lots of things that right now he made a pretty good position but anchor pair still without any trouble [Applause] able to vent some of that frustration lucas as he puts the ball away through the middle [Music] everything in this team goes through [Applause] [Music] lucas was hoping that one was in he wanted his coach to challenge it but it would have been a bad challenge [Music] [Applause] let's see what's good [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] straight away really hard to adjudicate that call but from this angle it was easy and that the friends didn't uh didn't complain at all it shows how it was just how far over it was i think that's trying to play with two hands was a pretty good indication too he's just going off the ball a little bit with their servant at the moment [Music] has come into the action there for france [Music] [Applause] but he has some different characteristics so the block will have to change a little bit in response [Applause] it's always a tricky one for a left hander to have to deal with that particular boy's gonna come around and back in and doesn't have a really good angle as perhaps a right-hander might have done but it's a great block from susan nonetheless he was probably going for the right hand of the middle there next to bruno but he didn't quite get it [Applause] [Applause] [Music] that set was really close to the net i don't know that wallace really had a lot of control over that other than to hit where he thinks the edge of the block is going to be [Music] and if you take that swing with conviction very often as a as in just then you can make your point to get that block out but also [Music] yeah they've been able to lift their service pressure put the french under a bit more a bit more pressure in their side out and uh they had a couple of really good transition opportunities so we'll see what the crowd does in the next five minutes to lift the french again [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] as well leading by four [Applause] even from this angle we can see that brazilian blockers moving their arms all over the place trying to get a piece of forehead [Music] especially the middle blocker there [Applause] [Applause] but the replay doesn't seem good back that up just a little bit of a matrix [Music] of chin easy not playing [Music] a presence in their first tempo got a couple of really big blocks real statement makers [Music] [Applause] bruno had to take a little bit of speed off that shot to get across the block but the defender still couldn't get it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] brazilian seemed sure but and the in-call on that one is hardly ever overruled he's having a picture lucas just going over to the imaginary [Music] left in the i didn't think pointing to the ball mark would have much influence over he stopped then danny jarm the change in timing probably put the block out of the out of the play just slyly he can turn in the air and hit that down the line like nobody [Music] [Applause] [Music] right knee like the knee with the brace on it [Music] douglas is the natural choice to replace in number 14. he's busy getting warmed up just goes to oh there it goes trying to take the court you could see as he just put his weight through his right leg he jarred it and his knee you can see that doesn't look nice but it does look a little bit like he's damaged that acl similar injury happens for the usa the mcdonald he went to hit a ball and through the outside landed awkward his straight leg landed on his left leg and you could see similar things just moved and went out he went out for the game it's in the hoffman estates earlier on actually yes it was jessica who did his knee donald then came in he's got that strapping on and that knee braces go on does have some strapping around the side to protect that lateral movement it could have been a lot worse potentially he's just sorry where it is so he's douglas is in [Music] it'll really change the way that brazilians will have to set up because he's been taking a big part of the court in reception uh lucas lok's been focusing only on on attack now they'll have to probably change that a little bit with the guy coming straight in off the bench we just saw the pictures of chin and easy who's [Applause] didn't get a ball off the block looks like brazil they're gonna go on to take this set as a timeline has been cool as that [Music] so he's got lots of experience playing big games under a lot of pressure absolutely no sorry to pressure [Applause] [Music] brazil really picked up the pace and that said they from the body language from the energy in the stadium they locked in the first part of the set that they were out of it and that france had a chance to really run away with it but they they hang tough they got a couple of aces that they hadn't had in the first two sets really changed the momentum there we go three aces counting the one at the end and the french weren't able to respond right away so they have chance to regroup and start all over again but brazil will have to do that too without maurizio who's keystone at their game [Music] [Applause] [Music] between lucas could have issues for brazil we'll see how their communication holds up it seemed that brazil were taking uh lucas lowe out of the reception and trying to get him involved with the fight which they did with some success not a lot of success if they go back to three receivers uh to cover douglas a little bit that will change how they might be able to use the pipes like it'll be interesting how they manage those different but he's nothing to where he actually hits the ball half the time because of the way that he jumps it's also his arm is not exactly where his body is and there's a whole lot of things going on there almost a game of dodgeball they got out the way of it and challenging the decision as to whether or not that was in the referee was pretty certain to call that one in from his position it's not one that they would normally overrule unless they were really really sure if this challenge has been refused it's because the referee believes this is hit by air [Music] so in fact the challenge is going to be coming and the ball is balanced then we have a decision marks out the point wins the technical timeout brazil were unhappy i would like to see that one again because i'm not sure that it didn't 94 or 96 instead of the 98-99 that that we're accustomed to seeing ellis now with the serve point gifted to brazil [Applause] to get that serving to a decent position [Music] pushed it out long distance just got to get some riches back on he's got some [Applause] heavy strappings around his knee but he's back onto the court and watching the rest of this match they've got as we see this one least not long term i had to see him back on court very shortly hopefully for the next game they'll certainly be needed by brazil they now have to win their next game to have any chance potentially of hitter from france engaged down on court and we can get to hear what his take on this match was [Music] [Applause] irvin you have already beaten the reigning olympic champion how does that sound i mean it's the vienna finals yeah it's um it's very important for us to start a start like this we start with a lot of pressure i think and we don't start very good but uh it's important to win also when when you play bad and i'm so i'm sorry for for brazil because they they lose one player today and it was also more easy for us to play because it won't play a lot of important for so it's okay we win 3-2 we are happy and we continue the competition what made the difference in the end what made the difference i don't know maybe in difference maybe in defense at the at the end we we play very good in defense and maybe in reception also they lose i say to you they lose one player or very good in reception so the stability is wasn't the same and like this i mean enjoy the moment people going crazy there thanks indeed enjoy the moment they have a victory perhaps coming into this one they may have felt it would have been easier they were pushed all the way by brazil and at one point he was looking as if brazil may go on to take the game but it is france who have prevailed they have their points on the board and they have kept the fans very happy indeed [Applause] [Applause] who have led
