this lightweight slide-in pop-up truck camper is the hawk by four-wheel campers my name is joe russo of we're the russos and today i'm going to give you a full walk-through of this overland truck camper and show you all the different features it has to offer [Music] [Applause] this video is sponsored by four wheel pop-up campers the base of this overland rig setup is on a ford f-350 now this is a one-ton truck but this camper is light enough that you could fit it on a half-ton truck or up the base slide-in hawk starts around 1100 pounds and goes up from there depending on the options that you choose this particular hawk weighs in around 300 pounds so you really don't need a one ton truck for something like this you can put it on something much smaller or if you really want it you can go full bore with the diesel 67 ford truck and take it just about anywhere starting on the driver's side of the truck these brackets in the front and rear of the camper are where you mount the jacks to take the camper off or put it back on or just raise it for some reason a lot of overlanders actually use these brackets to mount various accessories like this one has a cb antenna mounted on the back there's a shovel and ax mounted to that one so they make excellent outside attachment points on the top and underside here you have led lighting so these down lights are nice when you're camped at night you're going around you need to see things this is the fresh water fill there is a gravity fill as well as a city water hookup so that you're pressurized if you're at a campground or some other place where you have access to city water and the fresh water tank has a 20 gallon capacity this is the hot water heater it's propane fired and has a six gallon capacity which actually increases the capacity of your overall holding tank so you can carry 26 gallons there's a nice feature in here where you can twist a valve on the hot water heater and drain that back into your fresh tank this makes it easy to winterize but if you happen to run out of fresh water you can essentially siphon the water out of the hot water tank and now you have a few extra gallons there too up here is your shore power plug this is your propane fired furnace the back of the refrigerator if you open this up there's actually a little storage in here i'll show you what this is in a minute so if you have dirty clothes or things this actually makes a really good place to put them so they don't smell up the inside of your camper or just other little tidbits but you can also get under here and make sure that there's a clear air flow through for your refrigerator this compartment here is a wet bay we have the shore power plug fresh water hose the gray tank bag or you can put other things you want in here this just makes a handy little storage spot for the things you're pulling out that you don't want to put in your camper there's also where you can keep your hookup for the outside shower the outside shower itself is right here simply take this plug it in and now depending on how far you turn it to the left is how much hot water you're getting in your outdoor shower below the outdoor shower is the outlet to the sink remember this thing what a lot of people like to do is they'll take a hose something like this screw it on and now if you're in a place where you're allowed to you can just let this go out onto the ground where most people do is they have a bag like this or a bucket just attach it and now you have a grey water holding tank once this is full you can take it to the appropriate place to dump it at the rear of the camper is where you have your entry door for this particular truck they decided to go with an aftermarket bumper this is a luminesce bumper with the swing away tire carrier an additional storage box in here is where they keep the dual propane tanks on the back of the camper these little steps here allow you to actually access the roof if you need to now you cannot walk on the roof but if you wanted to go up there mount let's say a surfboard skis stand up paddle board something like that on the roof rack you could or you could just use these to hang your clothes or anything else you need to hang on the side of the camper we'll go into the camper later but let's swing around to the passenger side now there isn't much going on on the passenger side but for this floor plan in particular there's this large side window you have the mounting brackets led side and under lights a lot of people also choose the option to mount a awning either on this side or both sides if you wanted to but let's talk about what makes this lightweight but also durable enough to go off-road it's because of the all-aluminum flex frame this has an aluminum skin all the way around it also has a one-piece aluminum skin for the roof now for the roof itself it's secured by six of these latches four in the front two on the back and to put the roof up simply unlatch all six go inside and push the roof up it's assisted by the gas struts on the back and front of the camper all right enough of the exterior let's get inside this camper and see what makes it tick first we got to get the roof up to get the roof up it's fairly straightforward on the back side of the camper lift this up a little pull the lock out put your hand here and push up and then that locks into place on the front of the camper undo the strap and this bar is used to push forward and then up and up it goes when you're ready to break camp it's just the reverse to get the roof down unlatch this and pull now there's a bungee cord you can strap here to pull the sides in but my wife and i actually have a four-wheel camper ourselves and what we do is we shut all the doors and windows and we put the exhaust fans on pulling air out of the camper creates a vacuum and it pulls the canvas in which actually works a lot better than the straps do but again just pull down on this roof comes right down clip it back into place one thing i really like about these pop-top truck campers is the interior height in here it is 66 and i'm 511 if that gives you some idea of the height in here and for this particular hawk model this is their side dinette there is also a side flip over couch so it flips over into a bed there is also a front dinette where there is a dinette over here with cabinets on the side there is a shell model where this is empty and you can build it out however you please but there's also a flatbed model which is completely different than these and that's actually what we have so i will link to a full walkthrough of that now let me get the interior in here set up and we'll pull the bed out and you can see how big it is all the windows in here have curtains this is into the cab of the truck slide that over a little cushion for the dinette here and then the bed so these are extra cushions for your bed i'll show you this in a second get these out of the way if you're single this bed is going to work just fine for you but if you need more room pull out this platform [Applause] insert two of the cushions and now you have a queen-size bed if you need even more room than that this comes with an option for a king take our other two cushions and now you have a king size bed the beauty of this you can sleep front to back and what's even nicer than that is if you're super tall if you have to you can let your feet hang over you're not banging the wall in the middle of the night so this offers people a lot of flexibility if you have friends come with you you can throw them up on the bed or kids the only thing with having the bed out all this way is that you don't really have access to use the dinette area so during the day just flip these back up and now you have full use of the camper in the dinette area there's seating for three people this table can be moved out turned or you can pull it out and remove it completely now if the queen or king-size bed in here isn't big enough for you and you've brought friends or kids the dinette also converts into another bed let me show you how to do that first undo the table loosen this up pull the table out now for now you wouldn't do this at night but i'm going to store this on the bed this top part flips up and over and out of the way and now you have an extra bed long enough for an adult there's some extra width here also if you're someplace really cold and you want to put the top down running a furnace all night long or you're stealth camping somewhere you can leave the top down and actually just use this portion as a bed along the side of the dinette you have this large window that you can open up for a lot of airflow this is also your emergency exit if you need it small cubby up here curtains that go across the window little storage area in here and if you're going to have more people in here you can actually just use the bed as a larger couch kick back and relax on the inside here is the optional thermal pack for additional insulation you open this up you have access to the window here's the window with a clear cover over it and then you have a mesh screen this is the same on all four windows and these let in a lot of light and a lot of air so when you have all four open you're getting some great airflow in here along the roof there are touch leds and they're also dimmable now for airflow you have an exhaust fan here you can turn on there's also a vent in the front that is standard if you wanted to and you needed to have two fans you can get another fan up front have that blow air in down on top of you when you're sleeping or suck out and have the opposite done with the front fan so you get this circulation of air now the big question is what is powering all of this there is a 160 watt solar panel on the roof these do come with an option for a second 160 watt panel for a total of 320. under here there are two agm batteries lift this up there's a bit of storage down here and then the two agm batteries that are here the two agms are an upgrade over the deep cycle lead acid batteries that come standard with these in our model hawk we actually opted for the upgraded lithium package so we have three lithium batteries with a 2000 watt inverter under this cushion there is a little bit of storage but under the storage is where the 20 gallon fresh water tank sits the nice thing about having it here is that it's low on the camper which keeps your center of gravity lower it's also up against the cab of the truck so it keeps helps keep the weight balance front to back moving to the galley area there's your water pump on and off switch battery monitor freshwater monitor thermostat for the furnace hot water heater on and off switch there are two drawers slide out and for going down bumpy roads they are locked into place so they don't come out here you have easy access to your water pump if you ever have to switch it out as well as the valves for the hot water heater and if you need to winterize your camper under the sink you have a large storage area it goes fairly deep to the wall of the camper there's also a smaller storage area here more storage and this is where you have access to all of your fuses and the on off switch for the power to the camper here you have your furnace there is an outlet in the camper the outlet in this particular camper is only hot when you're connected to shore power there is a 12 volt socket and four usb plugs all of these are hot and they run off the batteries to your camper now one thing i didn't mention is how these batteries charge not only do they charge off the solar or shore power if you plug it in but every time you're driving they've connected the batteries in here to the alternator of the vehicle so you're charging every time you're driving down the road and here is the solar charge controller it'll show you your state of charge for the batteries how much solar you're bringing in as you scroll through the different menus on the countertop in the galley you have a recessed stainless steel sink and a recessed two burner gas stove next to the galley there's another storage cubby in your refrigerator this particular refrigerator is an isotherm it is a compressor fridge runs off the 12 volt in here and has a small freezer this latch keeps it from popping open when you're out on the trail so you don't come in and find your beers all over the floor of your camper that's never fun right below the refrigerator this compartment here is where your two propane tanks are along the side these switches are for your exterior lights there is also a switch for a reefer fan on a very hot day in that compartment outside that i showed you behind the fridge there is a fan that helps circulate air keeps your fridge cooler here's your co2 alarm and then down on the floor there are multiple access points so you can see and adjust your tie-down points for the camper in the bed of your truck under the dinette or the second bed you lift up the cushions there's another storage cubby this goes all the way down to the floor of the camper and there's another inspection port for tie downs so that is it for this hawk slide in pop-up truck camper now the part you've all been waiting for the price the shell model starts at 13 300. the hawk standard model starts just under twenty thousand dollars and goes up from there depending on the options that you choose these will work on most trucks with a six or a six and a half foot bed and people use them for everything not only over landing but a lot of people take them out hunting fishing they even go winter camping in them now that said we've done a lot of camping in hours and if you would like
