Former President Donald Trump will be arraigned Thursday in his second federal indictment

we're looking ahead to Donald Trump's historic court appearance in Washington D.C this morning this afternoon actually the former president is due to be arraigned on four felony counts he's accused of using a series of quote destabilizing lies to try and overturn the 2020 election results ending in the January 6 assault on the capitol as you can see security is tight at the D.C courthouse and barricades are already up ahead of Trump's scheduled appearance that's where we find our chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa Bob good morning good morning Nate security is tight here outside of the federal courthouse in Washington D.C as you can see barriers have been put up behind me bracing for protesters and others to arrive here later today when former president Trump arrives in Washington and is a Reign for now though there are just people in beach chairs around the corner lining up trying to get a seat for this historic hearing and just down the road is the U.S Capitol where the deadly assault on that building occurred on January 6 2021. former president Donald Trump spent time yesterday playing golf at his Club in Bedminster New Jersey ahead of his arraignment today in federal court in Washington an indictment was unsealed charging Donald J Trump with conspiring to defraud the United States a federal grand jury handed up Trump's second Federal indictment and he was charged for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election the former president is expected to enter a not guilty plea and will learn whether he faces any travel restrictions after today's hearing the case will shift to U.S District Court Judge Tanya chutkin a 2014 appointee of then President Obama in past tyrions of January 6 defendants she's called the attack horrifying and a violent attempt to overthrow the government we won in a landslide this was a landslide sources say Trump's lawyers plan to argue that Trump's false claims about the election were not criminal and that his efforts were driven by the advice of outside attorneys like Sydney Powell Rudy Giuliani and John Eastman among others CBS News has learned that they are likely some of the six alleged co-conspirators cited in the indictment I think Jack Smith built this indictment for Speed the he could have charged the other six folks and made them part of the case he didn't do that because it would slow things down I'd hope it wouldn't come to this on the campaign Trail former vice president Mike Pence who testified before the grand jury in this case harshly criticized Trump's conduct sadly the president was surrounded by a group of crackpot lawyers that kept telling him what his itching ears wanted to hear finally there are being consequences held for the former president's actions former capital police officer Winston Bajan was punched in the face and pepper sprayed during the January 6 assault on the capitol what the president has said and done is wrong on so many levels and now we've seen it clearly articulated in this indictment that what he did was illegal security has been tightened on Capitol Hill and at the D.C Federal Courthouse where Trump is set to arrive this afternoon with a heavy police and Secret Service escort it comes after through a bogus 9-1-1 call Wednesday about an active shooter prompted a brief security scare near the capitol yeah we're prepared for whatever might happen ahead of his arraignment today former president Trump is lashing out at the justice department and saying he does not want a trial to occur here in Washington D.C instead he'd like to see it take place in West Virginia a ruby red State he believed he'd get a more favorable hearing when it gets to that point meanwhile this isn't the only legal challenge Trump is facing on the horizon a possible indictment down in Georgia over Trump's pressuring of election officials Gail yeah it seems the hits keep coming thank you very much
