As she's getting all excited visiting her old workplace that reporter honeydicks her into it and then drops the "led to millions of deaths" line. Ouch
A signed letter from Hitler, that's gotta be worth a lot. Hope her grandkids never sell it though.
Super important point that crops really heavily towards the end that I wish more people would realise:
the nazi's weren't just some evil monsters pretending to be people who happened to all be inhabiting the same country at the same time, they were humans, normal people who were warped into what they became, i say this not to defend them but to warn us that it is possible for a country to go down that route again.
it's easy to just count them off as beings that me or you could never become, but enough passion of belief to do something "right", enough fear of losing what you and your family have, enough propaganda to dehumanise the enemy and suddenly committing small acts of evil to save many innocents starts to become the norm, then suddenly you have a large group of people each committing small amounts of evil in their eyes to protect themselves, their families, their home towns and in reality: arguably doing collectively the most evil the world has seen recently.
Just imagine a hundred thousand small stories like the last few minutes of this video, we all want to be useful, we all have things we will do anything to keep safe, years of propaganda making us feel like the wrong is the right or that a little bit of wrong is worth doing to protect the right thing and I think anyone could turn into someone evil in history.
I've never liked the idea that people are somehow inherently evil as it doesn't add up and I think it makes us susceptible to reliving history.
Thank you for sharing this. Do you know if there's more work on her story? There's so many people releasing their biography, I would love to read hers.
super interesting. thank you.
What an amazing video. Danke dafür.
Great story, at 6:15 they translate her saying that from the food she got there that it was the first time she wasnt hungry (anymore) but she actually just says that that was the first time she ate rice with mushrooms. ;)
It really does highlight how things like that could just be allowed to happen. You get a nice job, you're promised a better life and everything falls into place and you find yourself inadvertently complicit. Your view on what is ethical slowly chipping away, until it's too late.
Maidolf !
