the Ford Ranger is one of the best-selling vehicles in the country and it's been updated for 2019 it might not look like it but the biggest changes are actually under the skin there are 29 models in the lineup when you count up all the various models including four by two four by four single cabs super cabs and dual cabs prices have stayed virtually the same with the biggest rise being a thousand dollar jump for the wild track the biggest change for the 2019 Ranger is the addition of a new engine under the bonnet if you tick the option box is the new 2-liter twin turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel and it's the same engine that you get under the bonnet of the range of Raptor which means a hundred and fifty seven kilowatts and five hundred Newton meters of torque and that's backed by their brand new 10 speed automatic gearbox other changes include a revised front suspension this row bar has been made stiffer and the springs have been made softer what does that mean it basically means you get a more pleasant car to drive on the road those suspension changes can be found right across the range if you want the Biturbo engine it's only available with the 10 speed auto in either the XLT or wildtrak and it'll cost you an extra twelve hundred dollars you're going to have to squint pretty hard to find the external changes for the 2019 Ranger there's chrome door handles there's a chrome trim around most of the grilles and the wildtrak gets a new bumper but that's pretty much about it and there's not a lot to report either when it comes to interior changes a few materials have been updated there's a bit more black the head linings the most models have been changed but it really is pretty much the same as before the wild track gets leather interior but one thing I will give them a kickin for is the fact that the passenger seat has no adjustment whatsoever other than fore and aft the driver seat is fully electric has adjustment vertically as well which helps find the right driving position but if you don't like the way the passenger seat feels too bad Ford has also added its sink three multimedia setup to most of the range of range and it reckons it's pretty clever let's see if it can help us find a petrol station navigation find a petrol station so what the system has done is listed up a row of petrol stations nearby so line one he's safe who say line one when ready use the voice button and then say set his destination or setters Waypoint so there you go it did manage to find us a new petrol station close by not immediately as intuitive is something like a Siri but it can help you find some petrol or some diesel in this case if you're running low the 2019 Ranger is a really great example of just how far dual cab Utes have come even in the last five years stability control traction control driver aids they all feature very prominently aboard the Ranger but just like the majority of its competitors it still is a leaf sprung you so that rear end is still quite light and the tires are still quite an off-road spec what does that mean you still have to be careful when the conditions turn slippery and we're driving around Melbourne in the wet today and it's possible to spin the rear tire of the Ranger up when you're exiting an earth intersection for example a dual cab you doesn't have the same inherent stability as say a front-wheel drive hatchback and it's definitely worth keeping that in mind when you've got the family on board Ford has added stiffer robust front and rear softer front springs different bushings and redone dampers across the range so the big change for the 2019 Ranger really is the suspension setup and they've worked on trying to make it a more comfortable package around town at lower speeds I think they've succeeded the front end is definitely softer and they've worked on that rear end as well it's not quite as bouncy I don't think it translates as well when the speeds get up to 110 I think it's still a little bit too busy and it won't be as comfortable for the passengers as Ford might like the key changes really are what they call roll control so in that direction the car is stiffer which does allow them to make the springs softer so that way it's more comfortable they've also retuned the shocks to suit but it still has the same payload capacity and can still toaster in a half thousand kilos so on country roads at around 100 110 it still can feel just a little bit too bouncy but it does come back to you when you're traveling a little bit slower the steering it's quite light there's not a lot of feel going on under your fingertips but it still changes direction perfectly well the Ranger of course is pretty capable off-road as well with switchable low range 4x4 and a rear locking gift on the more expensive models there's another big change to the 2019 Ranger and it's under the bonnet so the 2-liter turbocharged diesel engine has 157 kilowatts and 500 Newton meters of torque Ford says that the Ranger can steal two three and a half thousand kilos even with the smaller engine onboard and of course it's matched to the 10 speed automatic transmission in use that torque is really helpful it does get the car up to highway speeds quite easily where I find it lacking is when you need to really put your foot down to get past the traffic or merge onto a freeway the tennspeed Auto is absolutely fantastic and we've liked it in other applications as well it always seems to have the right ratio for the speed you're doing and you can even lock out the higher ratios if you need a little bit more torque down low for offroad or for towing Park the 2019 Ranger next to the current one and you'd be flat out to see what's different but if those changes under the skin including that new engine and the updated suspension that make all the difference is it enough to keep the Ranger at the top of the sales charts it's going to be a pretty close run thing [Music] you you
