[Music] everything that was important to me was simply scoring simply scoring fantastic competitor who was a fantastic competitor if I didn't score even if it won the game I was still very upset he's a legend proper Legend okay doors being a driving for driving force on the field is the most fun you can have he's a legend proper Legend fantastic competitor simply scoring [Applause] [Music] everything that was important to me was simply scoring [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Amir was just being a sponge we like to learn all the time and that's always fantastic for the coach to work with every chapter in my playing days was a type of a university coach I had taught me something different he was a traveler he was an adventurer I try to understand where my weaknesses were and how to fix them he always became a better football player but she was an exceptional intelligence you are obliged to to suck up everything you can to just be that sponge [Music] [Music] it all started in a small little town in in Germany coming out of the baker family my dad basically worked 14 16 hour shifts every day he said you finish off your Baker diploma if something happens and you get badly injured you know you can go back and have something I wanted to make sure that I don't have to have that life so I finished it off and then I pursued only football from that moment on the youngster's clear appetite for goals signaled his escape from the bakery when they stood gotta Kick as a second division Club at that time came and said we want you to sign a pre-contract for once you come out of the Youth System that's when I understood oh wow you really you know could play professionally [Music] my first big move from the stuttgarta Kiko's second division team to vfp Stuttgart their first division team they won the championship it was very easy for me because I still stayed at home [Applause] now it's just a local kid [Music] and stood up the former Dutch International arihan almost won the World Cup in 74 and 78 had a huge impact on me he really saw saw something in me and he gave me great advice we do an exercise shooting on the go and you run with the ball to the goal and you try to pass the goalkeeper and you're gonna shot always the time from outside the 16 was no opponent was nothing so and then after three times I said to him hey are you afraid no I'm not afraid actually yeah my opinion you are afraid try [Music] the bicycle kick against Bayern Munich in 87 was my my door open more beautiful than possible in the technique and in the how they did it was when friends back in was sat in the stand and stood guard watched this game and a month later I played my first cap for Germany against Brazil definitely the most important goal in my career seven goals in two seasons under Han were enough to persuade National coach Beck and Bauer to give the 23 year old his chance France begging boy had a huge impact on on me he was just calm you know and I could make us and says but I trust you no problem klinsmann's first national test was provided by the European championships in 1988 hosted on home soil 88 was a very special year to me obviously the first big tournament with Germany and then losing against Holland is going crazy for that tournament and then you don't win it [Applause] but at the same time you know in that year happened that I played the Olympics in Seoul and we became third we won the bronze medal it was for me just like an eye-opener because the Olympics told me there's more to it than just playing football I met other athletes and I saw how much effort they put into their sport that they love so it was for me probably the most important event in my career was the Olympics by May 8 th at which meant the final hurray with his hometown club would be a UEFA Cup Final against Napoli we had a very special Stuttgart team Stephanie can do it but there was one guy in the way when he decided to do it other ways then he was just on a different level when I had the offer from Inter Milan arihan said you gotta go there's nothing to learn anymore if you have reached what you want in Germany now you can go and Italy that's where all the teammates are Mateo is you know fellow Bremer but there's also Machado nakare you gotta go so I packed my stuff and I and I drove down to Milan and and opened up the next chapter in Italy the sponge would continue to soak up inspiration from another of the European game's most revered coaches my relationship was a father-son relationship with trabatoni he taught me amazing amount of stuff Italians are Fanatics and tactics he walked me around on the field you know to understand certain movement patterns to understand certain defensive patterns Just Flowers you know and all I wanted to do was scoring goals for us Germans it's a 4-3 that is exciting we were in a great team with Inter Milan there were five Italian national team players obviously three German national team players the learning crew for me was Unforgettable we won UEFA cup to win an European trophy with an Italian cup is something very special it will stay forever with you and the club so it was definitely the highlight of my inter time [Applause] just a year after leaving for Italy klinsmann's compatriots joined him in his new Homeland for a defining summer the World Cup of 1990. once you get the chance to play a World Cup played with everything you have my confidence going into Italy was extremely high because we knew we had a very very good team we entered the World Cup one clear Mission we're going to win this thing we knew that if we get our act together we are the best team so we didn't fear anybody we had this kind of inner feeling that no matter what will happen we'll figure it out beckenbauer's team was spearheaded by the powerful dynamic between Klinsmann and roma Striker Rudy Fuller amazing hard worker but just so intelligent he smelled everything ahead of time I was a more type that needed to move around to run a lot to get all my energy out it just let me run Eva he was better at sprinting and could cover a lot of ground I was more skillful at solving tactical problems but he knew what I was doing and then he knew exactly when there's the right moment now to connect West Germany's last 16 game against another of the tournament heavyweights Holland was shaped by the controversial red cards shown to Fuller and Dutchman Frank reichardt [Applause] should have been sent off not only fellas yes but strangely enough although the red cards were bad for both teams it was worse for the Dutch because it led to there being more space on the pitch it hit them more than it hit us because they lost one of the top defensive players [Applause] [Music] klinsmann's subsequent lone display against the Dutch was celebrated in the German press as an almost perfect individual performance after a couple of minutes I realized I have a lot of space here to run into and I can start to terrorize this defensive line that's how I grew probably to one of my best games in my career you even got the Jurgen was just playing at such a high level and had this amazing capacity for running which of course he did when he scored it was an outstanding performance [Applause] the free scoring West Germans cruised into the latter reaches of the tournament the semi-final if england was back and forth you're hitting the post both teams could have won it the match against England was much tougher than the final against Argentina [Music] the final itself was really sad because it was not good enough for World Cup final the tower encounter against Diego maradona's Argentina in Rome was not without controversy most notably an incident that would later haunt Klinsmann that really was an awful foul reality was that the guy cut about about 15 centimeter long cut next to my shin bone it really hurts now what's the reaction a bit extreme probably yes because when I saw it on TV I said oh my God why are you killing soap but but it was because he really hit me Argentina knew that they had almost no chains against us we were just on a roll like a locomotive going through a turnip [Applause] for days in [Music] share it with everybody around you and with them thousands millions of people from your country but but you don't really comprehend what it means winning a World Cup you only comprehend that far more later on when you're not playing anymore when you realize that what happened there in that specific moment when you win a World Cup means the world to a lot a lot of people [Music] celebrations of 1990 the German hangover would come [Music] there is a sense of relaxation a sense of oh yeah what we did the big thing now that hit us then two years later in Sweden and European championship [Applause] we were conceited pretentious and arrogant and clearly we were supposed to win the European championships and then you lost against Denmark if I look back at it today it's hard to imagine how we lost that game [Applause] Klinsmann looked to erase the disappointment of Euro 92 with a fresh start at as Monaco whose young French coach showed him there was still much to learn even for a World Cup winner you're the big ego but with a small ego you don't make a big career so it's as simple as that yeah I didn't know what to expect you know I had one conversation with us in Wenger and when I started to work with him I saw a coach on an with an amazing intellect [Music] probably ahead of his time he had that obsessive determination to score it's a Strikers have the pressure of the team on their shoulders you know and you can did it well busy what I loved on Asen is that he gave me a lot of responsibilities [Applause] but with Champions Marseille later banned from European competition for match fixing Monaco took their place and reached the last four in the 94 Champions League the main reason why we last had the Champions League semi-final at AC Milan was that we were not mature yet that summer Klinsmann traveled with the German national side to the states to defend their World Cup crown but the lessons of Sweden two years earlier clearly hadn't been learned it was basically the easiest World Cup to win ever because we were the only team in that World Cup that could have or should have beaten Brazil things aren't always logical in football in 94 we actually had a better team than we'd had in 90. we just died no via Germany we will go automatically to the final and then we play the real game it's fun yeah there were four players there who really didn't give their all for the team two to reasons in their private lives [Applause] [Music] we lost in that quarter final against Bulgaria because we were too arrogant we were too self-confident we were too full of ourselves so that was for me it was very difficult to handle these months after the 94 World Cup Scripps the free-spirited Klinsmann once more now 30 it would take another new beginning to ease the pain of USA 94. [Music] I had that offer from Tottenham all of a sudden and I just said with my wife you want to do London you want to do Tottenham you want to explore and we said yeah let's do it when we first heard about Jurgen coming to the to the club everyone was very very excited we'd all watched him on the Telly this blonde bombshell that was full of enthusiasm big long strides getting onto balls and hitting shots from the first seconds Jurgen walked into the club he puffed his chest out Blondie was waving all over the place and he just said let's play football it's settled very quickly I don't know you remember but before I forget the paper here accused him that he was a diver and I had no idea what do they mean and I had to ask people you know and they said well they were they referred probably to the 90 World Cup you know with that final against Argentina when they got fouled but the main test is really just they provoke you because they want to see how you take it so when it comes to first game at Sheffield and we drive up to the stadium and the fans were receiving us with the passive of their science 5.8 5.9 and I said Teddy says yoga you score we are gonna dive and the first thing he did he was a big big dive why for him to say to the English fans I'm here for a bit of fun no hard feelings whatever you know let's let's enjoy ourselves the feeling was clearly Mutual Clinton he came he wanted to fit in as simple as that Teddy Shayla and Gary map with other teammates Aaron Anderson and Nick Baum they took you on the signs and let's go and have fish and chips and have a beer and some beer in daytime are you crazy there was a place in walthamstow it's called Charlie Chan's we used to go there after a game to chill out and have a few beers and we said to yoga one night after he just scored two fancy come and have a few beers he was like yes yes I will come about 11 o'clock at night you're in klinsman walked into Charlie Chan's and everybody couldn't believe it in there and had a fun night again I was developing my game and for him to come and play and say look on this out loud Striker I'm going to be bombing on it suited my game perfectly that I could win headers I could drop off I could turn I could try and feed him he would feed me it was a perfect understanding that we didn't get in each other's way [Music] [Applause] of the season they give you an idea how quickly he adapted to English football and that's when I probably played the best Club season of my my life without winning anything klinsman netted nearly 30 times for Spurs in the best season of his life but the Clock Was ticking [Applause] I had an offer from the biggest Club in Germany Bayern Munich until that point I haven't won a domestic title being 31 at that moment I said well you got to do what you got to do if you want to win something still you have to move on [Applause] a personal level scoring 15 goals in that UEFA cup span which was pretty nice but also during that time the 1996 European Championship happened in England losing the World Cup in 94 was a big eye-opener and I think the lesson for our coach Robert was I gotta clean up here there's maybe a bad apple in there or two bad apples and he started to fix one piece at a time towards the 96 European Championship cup I came in for a lot of criticism for leaving another player at home Stefan effenberg 94 we thought we had the best team in the world and suddenly we created a spirit within the group that was brutally determined because we knew that there were better teams in the tournament but normally if you could not stand the pressure you will never try to shoot with your outside never this can you only try in that situation if you have an outstanding mentality Jurgen contributed enormously and we prepared them well for the kind of atmosphere England is a unique wonderful football atmosphere but for the kind of thing the players would have to contend with he really did an amazing job as Captain the more emotional highlight was the semi-final sman was not 100 fit he didn't play in the semi-final come on you're not playing in the semi we need you for the final it was difficult breaking that to him from a German perspective it was the the big game it goes into a penalty shootout you're in the lucky end of it but you know right after the game it could have gone their way [Applause] we have to play against Czechoslovakia we beat them in the group so everybody expected that we win and suddenly you start in your head oh now we can lose something I was really happy for him achieving something special in his second home the respect that we receive from the English fans was something you won't forget we even adopted the football Coming Home song we brought it back to Germany and we're seeing it all day long but not because of God forbid making fun because we love the song more than any other song we loved that song to a brief return to Italy with sampdoria and another season at Spurs before taking his bow at his third and final World Cup still it's called okay amount of goals but I already led into the 98 World Cup boy I felt like you know what it's not you are not the same anymore I I think it's time now with the helicopter pilot's license in California working under such a variety of coaches has granted Klinsmann a unique overview of the game [Music] all of them really are teachers in a way that you as a student of the game you are obliged to to suck up everything you can to just to be that sponge I was not surprised when you became a manager no because it's song ideas he had opinions yet the the good and the bad side of a German sometimes when I have an opinion they are white you know having coached Germany having coached Bayern Munich for a year having coached the United States for five and a half years I started to realize holy moly how much is on your shoulders there from humble beginnings in the German Bakery klinsmann's open mind and free Spirits have enabled him to live out a fairy tale career the greatest success any footballer can have is becoming a world champion he played a massive part in achieving that success he just gave out so much warmth and love to everybody that it was great to be around an absolutely an absolute world-class player world-class Striker he worked incredibly hard with his ideas and his future plans and German Football is still benefiting from that I'm forever thankful to this amazing game but I'm also I'm always thankful that I have a diploma as a baker even if I don't practice it anymore oh [Music] [Applause] foreign [Applause]
