[Music] hello beautiful people and welcome to adventures in everyday cooking my name is heather and today we are going to go on an adventure with the foodsaver now i don't know if you are familiar with this idea or if it's brand new um i have seen these around for many many years i think my mom might have had one but i have not had one as an adult now i was going to just unbox it for you and use it right out of the box but i figured maybe i should do a little bit of research before i started so i opened the box look for the manual and lo and behold the only thing that came with it was this piece of paper so this thing is super easy to use um and i can't wait to show you uh the results of our adventure so what i decided to adventure in today is doing a pork roast both with the vacuum sealed marinade method and the regular method which both only takes half an hour so basically i'm just going to well you'll see let's just get into it are you ready for this let's go so before we jump into the recipe i wanted to maybe let some of you know that are new to the channel that i have a little contest running right now um if you click on the link in the video description you will be taken to a short video of me visiting the high plains spice company in sterling colorado when i was there a couple weeks ago um if you comment on that video sometime in the next week so in the next week i am going to be picking a winner from the comments and you can win a 25 gift certificate to high plains and it's good for online purchasing so you don't have to be in colorado to purchase their spices and use the gift cards so if you have not entered yet go ahead and do that and then come on back here so you can see what i'm gonna do because i'm gonna use one of their spices and the spice that we're going to use is called pig tickle pig tickle really pig tickle kid you not pig tickle it has salt pepper onion garlic paprika and chipotle powder so first thing it says it says to turn the latch on the side to open so i want to show you over here there is a latch little feature right there turn it to open so that this actually opens all right so let's go ahead and put our there we go right in and then we're gonna pull it to the ceiling strip right there and we'll close the lid okay so again we're gonna turn the latch all the way down and this light is going to go on now i did turn the switch just a little bit ago just to make sure we had power so that's how i knew how to do that however everything else is new um press the seal button so we have a vacuum button a seal button a mode button and then we have the handheld device over here so let's go ahead and push seal see what happens open did it seal oh it is that's sealed oh crazy do you see that so now i am going to reopen the lid and pull the bag material forward measure enough roll for the item you intend to vacuum seal so i am going to go ahead and pull this kind of outward um my roasts let me just show you right over here these are our roasts right here so let's slide the bag out and i'll say probably about right there and then we're gonna push down and cut that might be too small i might have cut my first bag too small because it has to be it has to be enough to fit the roast and then an inch so let's try that again shall we we shall all right so it's already in there let's do seal okay now i'll open and we'll pull that out and this time we are going to give ourselves a nice bit so if our roast is about that big i'm going to give myself a good bit there all right and i'm going to push down and i'm going to use my cutter to cut all the way across and that's it okay so all we're going to do we're going to treat both of these roasts just like a dry rub so i am just going to sprinkle it well all over everything and we want to make sure all of our sides have the pig tickle on it even our fat layer we're going to rub it in rub it well massage it give it its last will and testament i'm pretty sure it's last will and testament is to be in our tummies all right so that looks pretty much rubbed so now let's do it to the other side the pig has been thoroughly tickled all right i'm gonna put my roast inside and the reason we are doing one roast inside and one roast outside is because i want to see if indeed using this machine helps it to marinate or rub or whatever better because i don't know um they say i don't know who they are they say it's supposed to cut marinating time in like a fifth or a third like a lot significant amount of time like you need to marinate things for like six hours or 30 minutes like i don't know the math and that i think that's 1 12. i don't know but hey you know what it's worth a shot that's why i wanted to do this one that isn't vacuum sealed and one that is and see if we can taste the difference between the roasts i don't know all right so now we are going to lift up our lid we are gonna put this right into the machine and see this green thing that is the channel which we want to make sure our bag is in so it looks like our bag is in there because that's where we're going to suck out all of the air all right so we're going to put it down move it to operate so nothing should move and now we're going to and it says dry moist or pulse so i believe pulse is when you i did read up on this pulse is when you have something like bread that you don't want to squish or cake that you don't want to squish all the way down um it will actually somehow know maybe i don't know i'll i'll figure it out but this is meat this is a dry rub they're not moist there's no liquid so we're going to use the dry setting and we're going to push vacuum look at that suck it all out and i assume it will stop when it's done oh it says when the indicator light turns off then it is sealed so we'll just wait it's a big piece of meat with a lot of air in it apparently oh i can see it moving still all right oh look there is a manual inside this these bags this was just the quick start guide so i quickly started [Applause] looks like one of my seals is not correct oh i had a wrinkle in my bag see now this is why i wanted to do this because i have no idea what i'm doing so let's get a pair of scissors make sure you don't have a wrinkle in your bag because that thing was going off for a really long time and i did not understand what it was doing this is what it was doing i had a wrinkle in my see that there was a wrinkle so it could not properly seal let's do that again ensuring no wrinkles all right let's do this again this time i'm going to come from this side i'm going to move the machine this way [Music] [Applause] okay one thing i don't like oh i didn't realize it would go all the way up because there's there's a little bit of resistance right here and so i didn't want to break it well apparently when you push all the way up it stays all the way open now you know no wrinkles okay operate there must be a learning curve okay we're gonna put on moist this time and let's watch it suck [Music] oh it didn't i did it right that time yay all right perfect so as soon as that seal button all the lights go off it's done so i'll just wait just one more moment and now it says it's done look at that a perfectly seal a mealed piece of meat now i'm going to get these into the refrigerator for 30 minutes at the end of 30 minutes we're going to get them in the oven and then we'll check the results see if this machine is actually worth it meanwhile i just wanted to address a few questions that have been beamed to me over the internet um i know a lot of you are like why on earth would you spend the money even if it was on a black friday sale on something like this when you we have plastic bags right i mean like everybody uses plastic bags this is my big block of cheese use a plastic bag for it no big deal right well i'm so glad that you wanted to see why i got this so regularly and since i just took this out of the bag this is literally how i store my cheese right now with it all willy-nilly and all funky monkey yep all the things um but apparently this thing can seal up your cheese and make it usable for way longer so it doesn't get mold and so on and so forth however we don't have a tendency to have too much cheese go bad because we really like cheese in our house but if you don't eat a lot of cheese and your cheese tends to get moldy this is a good thing for you so i read that you can put your cheese in and seal it up and that's great but then i started to think about it i'm like that's a lot of waste because when you reach in here let me just take out our bags here so if i put it in a bag that's the same size and then i have to cut it open every time that is a lot of wasted plastic right i don't think i want to do that so i actually after reading that i'm like well that's a good idea and all but i don't think i'm going to do that however then i opened the little thing that had the manual in it and i took out all of the bags that were in there the bags that were in there are food saver bags with little um recluse reclosable things at the top and i thought oh well what's that for oh well i'm glad that you asked so there are two sizes and i think there's other sizes as well but these are reusable resealable bags so i'm gonna open this up i will put said block of cheese and i have not done this yet so i don't know if it's going to work but i'm going to assume so because i did read a little instructions we're going to put our block of cheese in it like this we are going to seal it and you don't have to worry about pushing all of the air out like this one and then we're gonna use this little thing this is called the hand-held sealer so we are going to move this to operate and we are going to says vacuum and marinate so we're just going to leave it on vacuum and we are going to push it right here and hold it down and then push handheld shut off just wait just wait this is so cool whoa whoa look at that look my cheese is sealed no air inside of it whatsoever and to get air into there and to um have my cheese i just go cut my cheese put it back in there seal it back up again and then use my machine to do the same thing oh my goodness this is cool i'm gonna have to get some more of these food favorite bags because i want to show you what else that i thought of now some of you know i live in northern california and it's not necessarily hyper growing season right now but our avocados are still a pretty good price so i took one for the team and i ate half of an avocado just a little bit ago because i wanted to see how this works so here's another small food saver bag and we are going to put the avocado in seal it up and here we go apparently this will make it so that my avocado will not turn brown when i open this bag later tomorrow i will have a perfectly ripe beautiful green avocado what what look look at that look i am thrilled to death right now like that is gonna save us that's gonna save us our money by buying this like i'm gonna save more doing my avocados like this than i would have well i wouldn't save then throw them away do you know what i'm saying oh my gosh this thrills me okay it has been three days and look at that the avocado is still perfect wow this is the last of my jalapenos sad face but i'm going to put them in one of these bags um until i want to use them in hopes that none of that moisture that collects around the jalapeno will affect these and they'll be ready to use in my next dish so here we go we'll do it again this is so fun i don't know why but look look at that my jalapenos are ready for the next time i need them zero air can get in there which means zero mold will be able to grow all right look at that okay what else can i um zip up all right and using that bag that i messed up earlier and my homemade teriyaki sauce i have put some of the leftover trimmings off of that huge pork roast that i had into this small bag and we're gonna add teriyaki and get it in the machine on the moist setting because it's moist and we're gonna let this marinate overnight and then we're gonna make some stir-fried rice tomorrow all right just gonna pour in okay so now let's go ahead and open this up make sure it's in the channel shut our machine turn it to operate now we are going to switch the mode to moist and we are going to vacuum [Music] all right says it's done and there we go yep look at that now as you can see the machine actually stopped before i got any of that um moisture or that stuff so that's cool so i'm gonna put that in the refrigerator after i clean off the gunk because i don't want that all over my refrigerator and this thing comes out so if you do get some of your um marinade inside of it you can easily put it back after you wash it out you can just easily wash it is what i was trying to say might not be that exciting for you it doesn't take much these days i mean with all the comb and stuff and you're just excited about very little although this is pretty big i don't know being able to preserve my avocado perfectly this is pretty big i'm pretty excited about this this is probably way more exciting than just pork teriyaki pork or cheese or although after the dry rubbed meat comes out maybe it's going to have made all of the difference i don't know but so far having a lot of fun do you have things that you like to vacuum seal inquiry mines want to know because i want to try it aha in my freezer i found the very reason why i needed this in my life let me get up close all right i don't know if you can see there but this has tons of frost inside of it so all of my apricots are in danger of being freezer burn so this would be a great it would be great to put it in here i would need a bigger bag though because these are all frozen for the moment so i'll have to uh do something with it later after i get a bigger bag all right it's been 30 minutes so we are just gonna get these right into our baking dish this smells so good everything smells good all right and when you put this roast in make sure the fat is on the top of your roast not the bottom because you want the fat to be able to melt over the top of your meat so fat fat and we are going to add one cup of water ish to the bottom of this roasting pan so into the 300 degree oven this is going to go for 45 minutes per pound so this is gonna take a while so i'll be back to show you the results okay the pork is out and they look pretty identical which they should so we've let it rest for about three minutes and now we are going to cut into it and see what we think all right so here on the left uh my left is the one that we put in the vacuum sealer so let's check out what that tastes like looks beautiful and i'm going to take just a slice on the inside just a little bit hmm pig tiggle's good y'all all right let's chase this other one this is the one that just got the marinade just or the rub just on it for 30 minutes not going into the vacuum sealer hmm well that's interesting i feel like that one really does have more flavor i almost feel like this one's more tender as well which doesn't make a lot of sense but i don't know i'm not a scientist i don't know why these things work the way they work they're both good the pig tickle is really a good flavor but i want to say that this one that went in the bag is just a little bit more tender and um a little bit more flavorful that's weird i can't explain it i mean like i'm pretty sure if i give two slices to my husband he will prefer this one over that one i don't know i don't know have you ever marinated anything with a food saver before or some kind of vacuum sealer do you notice a difference inquiring minds wanna know because i think i'm gonna do some more of this uh adventure and find out if it was just a fluke or if this actually is what happens when you vacuum seal to marinate or do a dry rub so cool all right you guys well if you enjoyed that video please give it a like share it with your friends and subscribe to my channel i do videos several times a week and i'm always looking for the next adventure so if you have something that you want to see me do leave it in the comments below and i'd be glad to check it out oh and don't forget just a few days left until i give away the 25 gift certificate so make sure you're entered to win in the spices video okay you guys we'll see you next time [Music] bye you
