the focusrite scarlett 2i2 in this video we're going to go through these setup steps for the Focusrite 2i2 audio interface we'll go ahead and install the drivers and go ahead and hook this interface up and see how it works the scarlett 2i2 is a two in two out audio interface it is USB so you plug it in to your computer with the included USB cable it's bus powered meaning that you don't have to plug anything into the wall all of the power will come from the computer and this single cable before you buy the two I to understand that the two I two and the two I for do not use the Focusrite control software if you want that you need to get this 6i6 or higher for the two I to your direct monitoring will be right here on the front of the unit here on the front of the unit we have our multi inputs so these can take XLR or quarter-inch cables we have line or instruments so if you have a guitar you want to plug in you switch this to instrument if you have something like the output of a mixer or something or another audio interface then you would switch that to line if your XLR is plugged in in this control doesn't make any difference at all then you have your gain knobs and there are lights which will show you if you are clipping or you are getting a good level this will supply 48 volt phantom power with just just that button there we have our direct monitor which is going to route the input of this directly out of the interface so that what you can hear what's coming into the interface with no latency through your D aw okay course monitor button that's your overall volume for whatever is plugged in to these two line outputs obviously should be your uh your monitors and of course headphone control right there one headphone output here on the bottom of the unit it does have rubber pads so it will uh it won't scratch up your desk or wherever you happen to sit this thing it does have an aluminum housing so it should be pretty rugged if you want to take this you know throw it in your backpack take it with your laptop and record wherever you're at here on the inside of the box is your getting started instructions as well as our software bundle code so before we actually hook up this unit because I'm on Windows we need to go ahead and install that driver first so let's go ahead and install all of our software first go to focus right comm register and go ahead and log into your account if you have one if you don't go ahead and create an account I don't have an account so I'm going to create one here's all of the stuff you have to fill out there so let me go ahead and fill this out after you have logged into your account or created one go ahead and register a new product go ahead and choose our brand and the product which is the scarlett 2i2 right there and it's z2i 2-second gin so now I'll fill out the serial number which is on the bottom of the unit and after you fill all of that out now we can put in our bundle code which we have on the inside of the box and then just click Submit and there we go you can see the scarlett 2i2 in my account with the serial number and the bundle code right there so let's scroll down here and right here we have our drivers that we need so our focus right USB ASIO driver for Windows because we are on Windows get started if you need any more help just ahead in here and they already have a bunch of tutorials including videos here on how to get started even on installing your uh your Ableton Live your red plugins product registration all that stuff while we're here let's go ahead and get our bundled software and over here under the my software tab whenever you're logged in is where you can see all of the included software and all of the things that come with this bundle I'm not gonna download everything but basically how it works is if you're down over here now I have a serial number right there just click on it in this case come take me to excel in audio again in this case so let me go ahead and log in if you don't have an account you can of course you know create one so now that I'm logged in maybe this will be easier click this again and there we go it so that key in for me so I don't have to actually type it in and just register my product key and there we go I can choose I already have three of these so of course I'm going to select that one I can go ahead and download the xln online installer I'm not going to do that because it's it's pretty straightforward and it's already added that serial to my account so I can download that whenever I yeah whatever I want then we'll come back here so again I can use my drop-down it gives me a serial number right there for another plug-in I'm not gonna get it right now because our Ableton Live light and they already have videos on how to do this here down arrow just click this code here to redeem it come here choose whatever you want mac or windows down load it of course use that serial we have over here I'm not going to do it in this case but that is how you do all of these here as you can see pretty straightforward stuff so here's some more drum tracks and other content here's our red two plugins right here we're going to use the full version of ProTools whenever we get this set up and you can always get Pro Tools first by the way even if you don't have any focus right interface anyone can get the dwb no pro tools so first for free okay you can redeem that here if you want let's go ahead and install our driver and get this interface set up here is our drivers to go ahead and get this installed and through this here and there we go of course we need to restart our computer first so we'll go ahead and do that now now we have restarted the computer so we'll go ahead and connect the USB cable to our 2i2 and then of course connect that to a USB port on our computer and there we go we have our green USB power light now this next part is optional Focusrite does recommend setting your 2i2 as the main audio interface for your computer meaning that audio from a Windows Media Player or groove or YouTube will come through your 2i2 and out to your studio monitors that you have connected to your 2i2 or of course from the headphone output on the - I - it won't come from speakers you have directly connected to your computer or from laptop speakers okay so you don't have to do this if you have your own speakers already connected to your computer and you want to keep those audio streams separate from your D aw you don't have to do this now down here as we highlight this speaker icon you can see it switched me over to the Focusrite USB but if I wanted to use these speakers I have connected it directly to my computer I can always switch that back right here alright you can also right click here and just go back to your sounds settings and right here you can see what you're using as your speakers for your computer you can have different speakers for your computer and what you're using for your audio interface in your da W in order to hear the output from the - I - you need to plug in either your studio monitors and or headphones so go ahead and do that now so we are all set up now because we have our driver installed let's go ahead and open the full version of ProTools here so they go ahead and give this session a name and create it and we'll look at how to switch our audio interface this is of course is going to be different in other DWS okay so for Pro Tools let's come up here to set up playback engine and it already has this on the Focusrite but if it doesn't you can always use your drop down here and select that as such go ahead in here to our ASIO control panel for our focus right we can change sample rates right here if you need to and your buffer size right here if your D aw doesn't let you do that directly for the Scarlett it will let us go ahead and change those right here in Pro Tools but if you need to you can always again head in here open that up come in here to F come down to focus right and you'll find it right there okay we'll just create two mono tracks and this is set to input one this is set to input to wanted to connect say a condenser microphone I could go ahead and plug in my XLR cable we'll just say two input one and because this condenser microphone is phantom powered I'll go ahead and turn on the 48 volt right there then didn't hear in Pro Tools go ahead and give you a track a name if you want you don't have to but you can make sure you have the proper input if I monitor that you can see I'm getting input so now I'll go ahead and adjust the input with the gain knob on our - I - to make sure I'm getting a proper level that stays in the green and doesn't go into red if it goes into red that means you are clipping so set your gain and once you have your gain set go ahead and click record and record your first track from your microphone now if you are getting latency whenever you're recording and I'm assuming you're wearing headphones because you have a live microphone of course you don't want your studio monitors or speakers on whenever you have a live microphone because that will create a feedback loop okay you don't want that so you have your headphones in you're speaking into your microphone if you happen to be getting latency go ahead and turn on the direct monitor that will let you hear what's coming into the Focusrite so you don't have that round-trip from your d8w okay now whenever you do this you might want to mute the input from your D aw so you don't get a doubling effect in your headphones now if you want to record guitar go ahead and plug in your quarter inch cable and switch that to instrument okay then of course monitor the proper input in your da W go ahead and adjust your input gain make sure you are not clipping load up a guitar plug-in if you want and then of course go ahead and record your guitar part so that is the scarlett 2i2 getting a set up and getting it running the focusrite scarlett 2i2 [Music]
