- I've been wanting to go to this airport for a very long time. And this is one of the most
exciting airports in the world. (upbeat music) (flight attendants greeting) (upbeat pop music) - Morning, I'm Michael Miguel, and this is Otto, we are going to... - [Otto] Fly to Funchal. - [Michael] Flight time of
one hour and 30 minutes, and we'll be flying at flight level 3990. - Why Funchal is most
challenging airport in Portugal? - [Michael] Because of
its strong winds and high terrain on the sides of the runway. The runway is not too long
also, and the winds are changing during the approach and its
a visual approach from MI05 it's the most challenging one. (plane engine roars) - [Michael] - Sometimes
we have, the wind changes until final during the
turn and in Gelo or Rosario sometimes we have tail wind
here, if it goes to the approach. - ML05 with wind zero, zero, zero, 700 - Are the winds not too bad? - [Michael] - No - [Flight Attendant] - If
the cabin air system falls, oxygen masks will be
automatically released. In this case, remove your
own protective mask and pull the mask towards you. Place it over your nose and mouth adjust the elastic band to
secure it and breathe normally. After placing and adjusting your own mask, pull down the mask and
place it on any child... (upbeat music) - We just departed the last piece of land and now he's flying over the Atlantic. It would be a lie if I tell
you travel is only very fun, exciting, because it is also tiring. I only slept like four hour last night, so you can see I'm a bit tired, on this early morning flight. So hopefully they will
serve a nice breakfast, to re-energize. (upbeat music) The breakfast on tab was good. Economy is actually buy on board, which is pretty much standard
now in European carrier. There's no more free food in
the economy, what a shame. - The Madeira island is
healing, pure nature, it's a beautiful
landscape, very nice foods. And the people is very friendly, the weather is almost tropical
and you will enjoy it. - You have done many landings there? What is it like? - Sometimes, very soft
and sometimes a little bit with emotion. - Did you have to go around sometime? - We have. - Go around, wow. I hope today we don't have that. (intense music) (plane engine roars) - Three hundred and ten One hundred, fifty, forty,
thirty, twenty, recharge, recharge, recharge, recharge. (faint speaking) - (passengers clapping) (upbeat music) - Everyone clapped
about the landing right? How was the landing? What do you think about it? - The landing was one of the best and actually the people use to clap when they land in Madeira
because it's a special place. - Captain Miguel, that
was a great landing. Everybody clapped in the cabin. Everyone's so excited at
the end coming to Madeira. - [Michael] Today the wind
was calm, it was uneventful, but sometimes the wind
changes during the approach and during the turn to MI05,
so becomes a little more, a little bit difficult, but it was good. - Thank you so much, adios. - Obrigato. - Obrigato, bye. Wow. What a beautiful,
beautiful airport here. Yeah, I really, really enjoyed. (upbeat music) (plane engine roars) - This is my friend, Rudy. He's driving me around town
and we just did the panoramic terrace at the terminal. And now we're heading out
to some outside spot outside the airport to continue plane spotting. (upbeat music) - Hey, how are you, man? - Fine - Yeah, how's it going? Nice to see you yeah. - Welcome to Madeira. - I'm so happy to be here,
look at this spot here, wow! - Aren't you guys the luckiest spotter? Like what a spot, right
on top of the fresh hole. And this is Pedro. Madeira airport spotting right? - Yes. (Upbeat music) - Madeira arrival and
departure, it is Romeo one one three zero expect R & D approach,
runway in use, zero high, Wind touchdown zone,
zero, three, zero degrees. One three not variable between
three two zero and zero five zero degrees. (plane engine roars) (intense music) - It's getting sunny,
four seasons in a day. But as you can hear, lots of wind noise, the wind is gust to 22 to 24
and now easy just inbound. Let's see how this landing goes. (plane engine) We are quickly moving to another spot, which there's a Lufthansa airbus, inbound. We can see the whole airport, which is, I believe built on a platform. - Well, when you are going
tunnel, bridge, tunnel, bridge tunnel, bridge, it's like
that between valleys. (upbeat music) - This is my, one of my
favourite spots here, because, we can see the plane approaching, passing by, by you and then landing. Special on crosswinds it's amazing because you can see
the plane like floating before touching down. Here, the wind change quickly, and one of the ways to see if
the wind is from which side. We look at the Madeira flag. There's a big Madeira flag just on the threshold of the runway. (plane engine roars) (upbeat music) I take you to, now to the
place that you can get closer to the runway than any other place. Here, you are just five
metres from the runway, without anything between
you and the runway. It's amazing, very nice place. - This is unreal, it's unreal
there's a platform right next to the runway, especially
made for plane spotting. - Yeah, you can almost touch the plane. - So as you can see we're
currently driving underneath the runway, where these
pillars were supporting the runway extension here in year 2000. And this is incredible. - Sports centre, carting
go-karts circuits, cheap yard fairs. - It's incredible is how
tall these pillars are supporting the runway. - It's around one hundred
and eighty pillars. - Whoa, here we are walking
underneath the runway with all these pillars supporting
this runway extension and interesting this space is well used. There's yacht parking, car
parking and go-karts here. (wind) (upbeat music) - This is my lucky day
today flying a retro livery. Isn't it fantastic? What a beautiful aeroplane. - Welcome - Thank you. Thank you. Nice to see you guys, - Welcome on board - My lucky day today, thank you. (upbeat music) Am I lucky today to have a
beautiful first officer flying with me on this flight today, yay! - Welcome aboard, I'm
Patricia, the first officer of this flight today. We are flying today,
thirty-eight thousand feet. One hour and twenty to
Lisbon and I will be landing. - All right and so it's
the captains take off on this airport. - Yeah. Landing or take off yeah. - Is there any difficulty
on take off out of here? - Most difficult part
is the landing actually. The take off is not as
challenging as the landing. Today it will be a little
bit bumpy for departure, the first lets say 500, 600 feet, and then it would be smooth. (flight attendant speaking) (captain speaking indistinctly) (plane engine revving) (suspenseful music) - I always wanted to be a pilot because I remember when I
was a kid, my father always brought me to the airport to
see the aeroplanes landing and taking off and it was really
a passion since I was a kid. I started in aviation in
2018 in the top express, I did 800 hours and then
I get to airPortugal in 2019 and I'm very lucky to be here today. I'm now lunching, because
after this landing, we are flying and to Botswana and captain and I, we are not
allowed to eat the same food because of food poisoning,
so this is our food today. - Just a compliment to cabin crew, it's a Portuguese thank you, obrigado. - Runway zero three, performing
an ILS approach, and the wind is from the west we'll
have a slightly cross wind with twelve knots and it's
arrival between three to zero and zero to zero. So probably during the final we'll get some light turbulence is expected as well. (intense music) - Minimum, two hundred, one hundred, fifty, forty, thirty, twenty, recharge, recharge, recharge, recharge drive. - It was a little bit
windy, but we did it. - Yeah, you made it really nice. Like I got a really great
view on the right hand side. Beautiful to see the
whole Lisbon, the bridge. - Really, really beautiful. - Yeah thanks for flying me. Bye guys.
