Flying Alaska October 2021

welcome to alaska corner october 2021. this video is going to go through the flying in october we're gonna stop at a couple villages give you the history of those and uh just some scenic stuff about flying out here this month stay tuned [Music] so [Music] so [Music] today we're in russian mission alaska this village was first seen in 1837 it was the first american russian fur trading post on the yukon river in 1967 it was then sold to the americans when alaska was purchased 1900 it was then called or officially named russian mission um we're gonna just take a walk through the village [Music] here's a really cool piece of equipment uh that's been sitting here for quite a while i don't know what kind of engine or what piece of equipment it is from i don't have much information on it at all but if anybody has any ideas comment below [Music] so russian mission is located about 376 miles west of anchorage it lies on the yukon river back in 1900 uh the population was about 166 residents 2019 350 thereabout were censused in russian mission [Music] here we have the russian mission school it was built in 2011 on top of the old school site by bering pacific it houses kindergarten through 12th grade [Music] so we got the post office behind me here then it's straight across the street there's a clinic um clinic is for the entire village obviously the post office is too but uh back to the plane [Music] [Applause] [Music] so here we are in marshall alaska this is only about 25 miles northwest of russian mission where we were before marshall didn't get its name until 1984. before then it was called fortuna ledge and it was a mining village in the 1800s early 1900s so here's a load of merchandise heading to the store all the supplies for the village store is flown in on commercial flight and then transport by truck to the store the wonderful lady that gave us a ride was actually really excited that there was toilet paper on this load because the store had been out for a while go figure [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so let's head back to bethel flying out in western alaska can be a challenge and this october was no different we had snow fog rain uh icing conditions here is a video of me flying into bethel on one of those days as you can see off to the left you can actually see bethel as i entered into downwind uh snowstorm was coming in tower actually never reduced the visibility less than three miles and it was actually seven thousand over when i landed the snowstorm blew through in about 30 minutes but this is how it looked so so so so [Music] thanks for watching if you like this video hit subscribe and you'll get more videos like this coming from the alaska corner
