[Music] so that was me just over a year ago tuning up for a session for the series inside number nine which I've been working on for some five or six years now I think now some of you may have seen my Tutankhamen sessions which are linked above and below that was with a large symphonic orchestra in the hall air studios now whilst it's amazing to hear the incredible sound of Symphony Orchestra can make there's a lot of things you can hide behind with that many players this session on the other hand is a chamber band and they don't really have masses of samples to hide behind I'm really featuring the soloists the kind of bohemian nature of a chamber band and I have written some simply beastly violin parts for our poor first violinist max to play in order to really follow this and enjoy this what I would recommend is downloading the PDF below which is the full kind of conductor score if you will know the other thing that's very unusual it's just one entire session and I don't I believe change the tempo at all I just simply subdivide into halftime triplets I'm counting as false triplet I'm counting as threes and the way we've organized it on the page is cue kind of letters if you will so I'll say okay take it from a and we'll probably start not on five will run the clicks from bar three this is to give them two bars counting which is kind of industry standard because you basically keep the conductor a bar and then the conductor has a bar to count in the band there isn't a conductor there today just a screen with the picture on the dialog switched off and the bar counter so the band know where they are they're also receiving a click to the ear which is balanced live against how loud or quiet the music is this is to prevent click spill this is part one of a two-part tutorial about why I think it's worth using musicians even on low-budget very quick turnaround TV in fact I think it's it's more valuable to me because you'll see in this single three hour two hour 15 minute session the all of the nuance and what they can bring to the table is simply not achievable with samples certainly for a score like this and by using a live band when it saves me so much time fiddling around with my bloody computer I've allotted two hours 15 minutes into a three hour session because I've got a little bit of music to write for two other episodes which again I'll take you through in the next part of this tutorial alongside showing you how I take these sessions from arid I'll put them back into logic mix them in with the samples what saw was a great at what samples are not so good at and what live musicians really bring to the table right let's get back to air Adele so we have max Beatrix and Richard and Leon in the control booth we have Nick Taylor and off screen to your right is the music supervisor Maggie rod furred and our musical contractor working on behalf of Hilary scuse is kind of lingering around to you'll probably see her pop up when it's time for the band to take a break right you'll notice that the clock is already running they tune up on my time not their time and when we say it's a three hour session we also have to include a fifteen minute break that's not three hours and 15 minutes it's three hours including a 15 minute break so this is a very eccentric episode two magicians not particularly sophisticated people but I think people have a higher intelligence so your parts are a slightly bohemian kind of sound I'm looking for but as always with these there's no Hall barred so when you see like Pont markings let's kind of go for it and stuff and I've done it as a continuous cue so we'll just we'll just kind of chip away at it brilliant and thanks for coming early today thank you thank you brilliant right so we're gonna go from with Dewberry the dingle-dangle so let's go in at the top of a and we'll run clicks from both okay so another listen I'm just getting the sound up in here [Music] [Music] that's great max I think you could be kind of a little bit robot at the beginning start feeling and maybe anticipate the beat a little bit slower and build into it if that's okay tirely convinced my Celeste is that out of tune [Music] can we just check the a again [Music] okay here we go brilliant [Music] could we just go for one more and we'll get it yeah it's just I know my Celeste sample I know it's not it's not I know it's not too far out so it's I think it's the third court it said the third that bar seven something's just not matching with the playbacks their [Music] opponents [Music] can I just have one more like that again I think that that was a master though that's great [Music] preferred the 1/4 okay that can we one before is master great okay so beheading alert for um you'll hear me say make that the master or leave that one on top basically we work in playlists on Pro Tools and whatever's left on top is my favorite take this helps me not having to troll through countless takes when I get this back into the studio to mix in with the rest of the samples [Music] [Music] so they're in a magician studio [Music] [Laughter] [Music] okay where we get the hair pins in the cello and the bases way of seeing the Forte mocking can we do quite a heavy Pont as well and I'd say really good give it everything you've got there yeah and at the same bars 143 where we'll go up to D got Tabata to 40 [Music] [Music] [Music] once you're ready I'd love to have twice as much backing [Music] yeah yes up to bar 140 sir utter bar under poison I just it'd be fun to go just for one more but it's all sounding great yes please chunky [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you Richard and Leon you made that same particular horrific clicks from 1.5 into D up to 156 [Music] [Music] it's sounding absolutely great max I think maybe just upper-upper dynamic in could I hear it more more pont pont or soul pont means to play close to the bridge this gives a sharp kind of metallic sound and the closer you get to the bridge the more harmonics upper harmonics are formed distortion if you will [Music] I think that's great at Maxim maybe back down a dynamic but with that that degree of font we make sure the sounds off guys Joan Bonnie thanks [Music] absolutely fantastic just one more Richard could I maybe just a tad less vibrato on this bit thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] magic section e two to seven klicks from two to five [Music] great staff tricks and and when you change notes could we portamento it's mainly where's that change is it 2 3 5 into 2 3 6 portamento glissandi you'll hear is talking about the shape of these a lot bit of that stuff of course [Music] maybe backs we could try it without assault a snare marking this time but still consort or maybe that said now that's Beatrix's instruction okay now let's just go again as before then sorry max a bit more this yeah I think it's absolutely spot-on max could we try that Roboto thing again so for each phrase starting slow speeding up and it's almost like a hairpin do you know absolutely but just one for me I'm just absolutely just the same again could I try it console this time max Khan sword or short for console Dino or we refer to them as Muse they're little plastic mutes that go on the strings and give it a very bright silky sound [Music] the last one was a master we do loss one was a master great really fantastic stuff so section F will run clicks from two five four no no no let's take it off yeah yeah completely it doesn't snow thank you [Music] that's brilliant thank you very much this is the bottom of the slide and max thanks for that interpretation that spot-on yeah great yeah absolutely so let's just do that one more time [Music] can we watch the hairpin Richard and Leon in 266 267 so just just made a little just a little accent at the end of the last note not nothing too big yeah maybe maybe instead of actually accenting it maybe just going into Pont just to give it a bit of sharpness that's fine that that was spot-on [Music] it's absolutely brilliant I just like to do one more the last note of each phrase max can we make that super short almost like a little speck are so little C's it's a hum I'm here sorry we were just we were having technical stuff here we go [Music] [Music] that was [Music] and we just do one more if I could take just one more but exactly as instructed that would be great thank you [Music] absolutely awesome let's move along to G this is tacit section for Macs bit tricks and yes yeah constant speed and you see extremely body but the Danube agenda as well let's let's try it with a crescendo whatever feels natural Joe can you give yourself a blow click some 370 good people Oh Joe real good blow [Music] just sending one more for luck if possible forget jack and give it a really good blow [Music] magic thank you sex intersection H clicks from 46 for if we and one thing to remember and possibly just looking at the opening cue again if we get time just because they're kind of settled into a bet so you're a bit more locked in temper wise max this time plenty of click [Music] great so and Max from 483 are here that could be school Pont could we try it Kahn sword and this is just one of those crappy notes but is there any way of making it feel a little bit looser more bohemian so the clique is actually made from little fragments of audio it's not sequenced Soviet the tape op and the engineer can literally move it around and bubble it up or have it depending on the whims of the band yes [Music] it's potentially without consort CoverGirl's with that interpretation what you'd like that sound well then I think it sounds great I just think one more if possible yeah absolutely brilliant interpretation right thank you [Music] [Music] what take numbers that okay I just like to have one more go if that's okay probably because I'm enjoying it so much that was twenty nine the last one yep twenty-eight still wins for me I tell you what max sure should we come in just that's bringing in quieter up until the end of kind of four six nine she said gradually introduce it all that sounds nice yeah it's nice when you feel them engaged with it [Music] if I could just indulge one more with that interpretation that would be great thank you [Music] I think we're doing really well so you guys are doing well [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Bravo thank you so much I five ten klicks from 5:08 thanks Mike split he's really shining on this one I think we're definitely definitely should do that opening q double stops these are incredibly difficult they're basically the violin is designed to play one note at a time but you can by getting them to form two notes and to play across the strings or pluck across the strings they can form two notes but it does mean that kind of accuracy suffers a little bit so really tough to play [Music] so that's a blighter max don't apologize good could we go consoled and could you give me a little bit more Ponce where you see fit [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's just brilliant max could just make it as quiet as you can you can't make searches it's um it's like a distant thing [Music] that's great can we just do one more with slightly less pomp Thanks thank you [Music] okay can I just stop you we just phrase it so say for example in five eleven can the first quaver be slurred into the e-flat and then do Cemile from there on [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's great can we just do one more thing that's great my assistants have got work to do okay I'm just gonna let them close the door [Music] yes really suffering isn't it [Music] that's absolute fantastic could we just do one more and then I think I'm sure we'll be happy [Music] [Music] [Music] awesome can't do a safety copy max with you just playing the upper stops not the lower stops [Music] you Willian thanks ever so much let's have a look at L clicks from 5-9 - sorry if I missed her yes no sorry it's a moment yes J so five four three thanks son so we'll go up to 560 and of and I would say all it's all kind of fairly metered here [Music] yes no no that's great I think just a another one and you know anything Beatrix and and you can do just to make it slightly more bohemian maybe a bit more points that kind of stuff so really enjoy it so I said metered sorry my fault I do apologise [Music] let's do one more and I think I'll be happy with all of these conversations these nuances they create with this very collaborative spirit just adds extra sparkle to the score extra special if you like something that's so difficult to achieve with samples something that's so specific to the picture so specific to the context of the piece [Music] can we go one more time max can you kind of um can you kind of undulate a bit more so come in softly and just just so we're kind of come it's kind of waves as opposed to a straight great what take was that [Music] I think just one more and we'll have it nailed brilliant interpretation I could get my meat on let's actually just tacit that thing I'll let the fakes take that it's five six one five six two for both of you but ryx and [Music] great but just can I just take one more and I think it will be there just just so I have a choice so no it's just it just just a just an alternative take just you know it's it's slightly different every time and I'm really enjoying it so just one more time [Music] a tour de force thank you so much from global to that K so clicks from five six one just gonna be in now is this there's Sun equip low pitch wise in the in the cans yes they will be yeah I think what it is it's that Tundra thing that we did which so it's like it's the the band is playing like ridiculously quietly yeah yes please [Music] [Music] I'm gonna have to fake spots to Isis loud it would be great to just hear it for context if you could just trim them up [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] I think we're really getting their [Applause] [Music] brilliance over so much [Music] [Music] [Applause] I think if we take just one more we'll have it it's a tricky one thanks so much [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I'm happy which may be that the second quarter not entirely convinced I do and I think I don't I can have 570 yet as well so can we go in on five six nine [Music] five six 9s day okay it's just be that suggestion maybe we just go go one more time with max maybe you're just coming down so ever so slightly just thrown in a balance thing [Music] I think that I'd just like to take one more with that with that dynamic but that that balance seemed to work really well [Music] amazing work thank you here's Elle taking that one on top oh yeah clicks four five nine two yeah let's just let's just grab this a little bit and then stop at 6:00 tonight [Music] okay thanks [Music] but that's in the bag Thank You M 607 klicks from successive yeah let's have a go that's what the orchestrate has come up with let's hear it without first thanks [Music] [Music] great just a couple of bits Beatrix and max could you portamento from 63 into 64 I love to hear it with mute song for Richard and ang please and that's not particular nobody and I'm Richard you couldn't really kind of enjoy it you know yeah just when you know make it kind of loud and soft I mean you know [Music] [Music] I'm really enjoying this Max and Beatrix can we put your mutes on too and with exceptions Leon I think where you feel you can give me some Pantanal all the time but just some yeah so everyone except for Leon if you want to kind of go into Pont and give me the odd bit of harmonic stuff with pomp just where you feel it's not all the time it's just it's a guy who's being a bit these are being being at being a bit dodgy basically yes absolutely engaged on this one collaborating [Music] Bravo I really enjoyed that thank you so much and here's n we'll take it up to 675 swords as notated [Music] great can we just slide between all of the notes not too comedic Lee dear damn so kind of I would say kind of quaver slides between I think that impact the way you played it sounded great now he's actually yes [Music] [Music] I'm ecstatic thank you Oh 674 so Lutz off for pizza kato's but maybe move on for you max and and back to you what kind of robot Oh max mode and shape it as much as you like yes a bit too 7:03 [Music] brilliant stop max I could just hear a bit more of you if possible that's how the great it's kind of an end of chapter for us in here it's sounding great and scary and lovely enough to remember that now [Music] just take one more the secrets of the magic trick [Music] [Music] one more time let's go up to 66 eight four and to retake there I think [Music] brilliant so clicks from 6-8 to in at six eight four [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's brilliant let's take it one more time sorry about both six 855 max they're preposterous is there anything is there anything change to make it I mean maybe hit missing the first nose of each triplet maybe you'd miss out the very last note the previous bar way I mean bohemian interpret okay leave out bits so same drop [Music] it's absolutely brilliant just do the knows about this you've got to say 4605 yeah yeah yes absolutely so six 8/4 you like more i'll stop once work you know we're clear [Music] [Music] Bravo sir Thank You P let's take a pee do we sit breaking or okay if you an agreement should we do P and then take a break [Music] okay we're doing really well but there are some big queue still to come and remember that we're gonna lose 15 minutes very suddenly because it's break time coming up and I'm reminded of this by bingo musical contractor arrives [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] that's great max and Beatrix can we put mutes on and Leon can you do that : yo you were sorely missed Richard [Music] time for a copper I think on that note [Music] [Music] okay they're gone okay place let's stop there so let's just go up to the end of 808 I just like to take one more as we naturally kind of shape the notes maybe we could just go into just a little bit of Pont occasionally I'm just thinking at the moment we're changing both on the change of notes which is okay so if we change both during that no you'll see here that that'll be great a bit just to make it a bit more that's a great suggestion max let's try that [Music] great stuff would you mind if I just took one more just for the old bar here and there thank you so much but it's just beautifully interpretation is interpreted thank you interpreter eyes yes I think it's a very good idea we'll go in a couple of bars and then we can do some editing and what we can probably do is when we do the next drop is start maybe a couple of hours back as well [Music] thank you can we go in it where do we go again yeah can we go in at 7-7 one so here's clips from seven six nine we didn't know that last time [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] I think the last thing was had a bit more Sparkle can we make the last one the master but use just the head of seven someone thank you yeah it just had something yeah so what I think we should do is what are we doing so have Max and Beatrix and Leon to a sit but I think maybe what we'll do is run clicks from 804 and Richard and start playing at 8:06 and then we're all in it ah yes let's let's try without first no just max and Beatrix [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] brilliant staff I just think we just need to be a lot louder everyone more espressivo and just a real climax sorry no let's let's say I would say it's it's kind of maybe started meta Forte and and just a really proud Forte once once you've kind of these phrases Beatrix when you're going say for example in 8 1 7 where you go but can we really dig into the second motive so Diane Dahlia we just play them all outer and see what it sounds like yeah yeah let's have a listen without muse [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] I'm great stuff and that's absolutely superb I think being the control freak that I am I'm gonna want to have a little bit of mix control here so would it be possible to just take everyone except for Max and Beatrix first can we double up the tracks so I can [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] amazing work thank you so much and your turn everyone gets here so yes I'm hoping so yeah a week ago 807 clicks my first seven this time got plenty of time nobody went on worry I think the directors gonna be delighted he and Megan Morales he's done three this year he did the 12 days of Christine which people say is the best bit of telly done in this country in the last 10 years yeah I know season 2 yeah it was the one with the Addison Lee the Addison Lee door-ajar thing I made into an instrument right thank 17 8:08 I've got to get some glasses I can't really read that [Music] let's let's get bak hunt up just gonna get the ball count up and it's bar 807 fix [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] could I just take one more just for options but it's absolutely superb thank you [Music] [Applause] [Music] bravissimo amazing okay it's just to the very beginning of that [Music] [Music] thank you so everyone together for the final bit of this episode which is s back to your kind of rebar so fun behavior so I think so yeah let's try it mute it first clicks from eight for one it lights that's the bear things when it's slightly dim you just know it's fun [Music] [Music] absolutely brilliant max can I just get more out of you a little louder just for balance [Music] just one more for safety but just just like that thank you [Music] great thank you so much okay moving on to some stuff that I've spat out of logic so I do apologize for the quality of the parts in the next episode I'm going to show you how I mix those all in and compare the samples to the live players just to really demonstrate the importance of live musicians I'll also show you how I filled that last half an hour 45 minutes in the session and how I incorporated those into the final two episodes of this season of inside number nine if you do live in the UK do check out inside number nine this is an episode called misdirection and the chase sequence at the beginning is absolutely classic so please tune in for the next episode so I got a really bad cold of this where I'll be taking this on and showing you how I take these Raw live recordings and make them into a final master do subscribe if you haven't done ding that bell if you want to be notified the next time I put a video up and one of those for those fantastic musicians and poor max who I absolutely put through the mincer today apologies to you sir see you next time
