[Music] [Music] actually all we just came down this crazy dirt path probably about five to six miles in the Highlander Highlander handled it like a champ homie Andrew Daniel now here with my homie Ryan - Ryan's never caught a fish before Ryan you excited to catch your first fish hello Eddie hello Eddie so the plan is to back back in as far as we can until about six o'clock tonight we're gonna set up camp my goal on this trip is to catch one brown trout that's over 15 inches long that's my goal so we're gonna get all our backpacking gear all set up I think we all got about 40 pounds so we're gonna be hiking for about 3 or 4 hours now [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] if we're making super slow pace see right behind me that's the Creek and now it's meeting up with the main river so now the fishing should start to get good I got my fly rod set up and this is my little collection now I've added to it so there's some good little flies here got those nymphs right there and those streamers right there I think that's a good little collection that gave me some fish on this trip so I got my indicator right here and that's about above about three feet of line going to a little tiny black zebra midge so we're starting off like that it's right where that little creek and the main river met I decided it would be a good spot to try to fly fish so right behind that Boulder cast my indicator and the black zebra midge and on the third cast boom stuck a nice little rainbow trout one thing to remember before you ever land a trout is to wet your hands it protects the coating on their skin and gives them a better chance at survival as we were walking me and Angela both thinking man there's bears and you know stuff out here this is their their home this is what they live with every day this terrain is pretty crazy Boekel yes good it's fitting just fine I don't feel too bad just gonna cross the river somehow looks like someone was thinking the same thing we were we decided to hike past these rocks right here set up campus now we got a bench and everything all right slight change of plans there's too many ants up there and I don't have a tent so I'm gonna be exposed I don't want any ants crawling all over me at night I know if these ants come out tonight but I don't want it terrific so I'll move down here onto the dirt it's a lot softer here anyway it's not gonna do my ridgeline from this tree over here all the way across there with this tarp anybody all right let me tell you the plan before I start let's see after it's done let's see if it actually mirrors what I have envisioned so on this tarp there are three there AR different not different a holes different rings see right there like that so there's it's separated into quarters it's one two three four there's four rings running down this side I put the rope my ridgeline on that second one right there that'll be up about two and a half feet that's what I'm going to sleep under I'm gonna secure that to the ground on each side I'm gonna secure that one to the ground also and then this one we're going to fold under and that's what I wouldn't sleep on we'll see let's see how this turns out [Applause] cos time to hit the sack got my insulator here my sleeping bag I'm hoping my decision to sleep over here is good one there's a lot less and so far but I did see something huge red ones lurking around my line here in the middle of the tent it's nice and taut still that's not going anywhere but the bad thing about it which I thought should have thought of was that it's kind of in the middle of a game trail I think so pretty silly on my part to do that if anything comes around I hope I won't have to use that because I still don't know if I happen in advance I probably still have the disadvantage but Wow try to get some shut-eye go fishing bright and early tomorrow this is my little door in here my waders you know y'all [Applause] so sleep it under that tarp yesterday I'll admit it wasn't too bad actually honestly I think I'm gonna make a couple changes today but anyway bright and early Andrews cooking up some breakfast I'll get him tomorrow I want to be the first to cast line in here going with this streamer weighted streamer it's about six feet deep here on the fly line I'm going to do a slow slow slow retrieve so let's see how this works and it came right for that streamer just like a spinning see how he looks huh a little wild rainbow beautiful little wild rainbow look at those colors on man that's nice gorgeous came right up for it - I'm putting back not bad for a start I'm gonna go eat some breakfast and keep walking down I don't know what I'll use next but whatever I do I'm sure it's gonna be fun before I start fishing this is what I'm using little Galvin real sage rod it's a pulse 9 foot for weight at Daniel just caught one it had a big bee in it but also these little ants or should I say big ants not 100% sure if that's a dry fly or not if I got a little split shot here and then since Daniel caught one on a bee earlier a bumble bee I don't have any bumble bee patterns but I do have this thing not even sure what it is but I put a little floating on it three foot leader pretty deep here I'm gonna do a few casts just missed one there's one and came up and bit on the dry fly showed you guys that bumblebee pattern I was using because on the dry fly came up and bit it but he hooked himself right there you can actually see his heart beating and it's pumping blood out so I gotta kill this guy he's really small but if I let him go 100 percent sure he's gonna die so it's a little rainbow my goal still is to catch a nice brown trout 15 plus 2 inch and I'm gonna release that one but I'm gonna really dispatch this one and just carry him on my back for the rest of the day this will be a little bit of lunch later look he's bleeding out a lot so 100% sure he's gonna die but man he came up and took the dry fly second cast baby this is the spot right here I got to get Andrew and Ryan on some fish over here let's do this man I can tell I'm excited when he cut in from the butt all the way to the front here let's see what he's been eating - that's always the most interesting part especially when you're fly-fishing after you cut all the way from the butt to the top right here in front of the mouth there's a little soft spot not in the gills right in front of the gills so there that's cut right by his tongue see that it's not his mouth but it's right in front of his tongue then you put your thumb right down that spot see it's not in his mouth right in front of it then you pull and you just make sure you don't rip its head off as you pull down everything will come out looks like a little stock trout samhitas is white like a stock trout would be but that's it you get the blood line out so from catch to dispatch to blood to clean ready to eat in less than a minute see what he's been eating clams ladybug plenty of bees I'm not sure what those are those look like little berries actually or something something weird and some bees the bees that's what I think that he thought this little thing on top was so that is pretty cool on the dry fly baby on the dry fight that's my first fish on the dry fly alright y'all we're gonna do that again we're gonna get another one right here I can almost guarantee it so what I'm doing is I'm high-sticking it so I'm letting my line be in contact with my fly almost I'm not letting my line float downstream like I did in the past that way it still has a natural float and I'm able to get a good hook set when I get the opportunity there's one another little guy he came up and make the eighth of the dry fly to hide this guys hooked okay so let me show you this one is a wild one I'm pretty sure see the pattern on him a lot more beautiful look at those stripes on them beautiful rainbow trout really small there's gotta be some good big ones mixed in the bunch so I got a weed through the small ones but then release this little guy man that's so fun getting them on the track life subdued I caught two right here yeah okay so cast out right here yeah that could work right there right down to the green down to the green second degree yeah I Ryan trying to get his first fish right now let's try to get in his first fish of his life try to get it right in front of that rock real up a little bit more closer to the bobber a little bit more okay now you can underhand it right in front of it yep now let it wiggle down a little bit where's that green I lift it up a little a little higher let it drop down which you want a dry fly they're hitting the dry fly right now what's the guy the one that's floating on top come up and yeah i jealous oh that dry fly is working great for me so to get Ryan on his first fish I'm just gonna tie something similar very similar except a little bit smaller so I think official come up on this I don't know I've never tried to dry fly on a spinning rod so let's see if if this will work at all thought of this impromptu spinning rod dry fly rig real quick I've got a bobber stopper on top and a bobber stopper on the bottom I took off the weights I got a dry fly here and I put a little floating on it so that's all I want all I want this Bob right here and the dry fly right here floating down fish should come up I mean this this little indicator thing man I could almost take this bobber off and just put an indicator on it actually no I can't I need a little bit of weight so there we go this is perfect right here this is going to get him watch that fly right by don't watch the green don't watch the green at all watch the dry fly behind it I don't got it we got one going alright you got it no you saw it yeah I was a little trout yeah don't go you can't have slack on it alright y'all I think Ryan's about to get get on one right now Yeah right in the bubbles and just let it drift so I tied two extra dropper so he's got a dry dropper and a bobber right now see how this works right down right back all right you got it nice to rise first fish grab the line Ryan first fish on the fly first fish first fish ever on the slide okay here hey my result and pride let him go dude it's our duty well buddy oh yeah Ryan all right and you're wrong one on the spinner - hell yeah Andrew that's like a that's a nice little wild a little wild rainbow right there good job dude this the spot damn I just had a strike on the dry fly - oh man - many people casting out here though [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh I can get there hella easy but it's just coming back might be a little slippery especially with the pack not too hard but I'll know you guys make the call let me take you guys for this entire ride and shoot anything Ryan back there like what the hell is going on we got to jump over this rock right here alright show em how to do it Ryan either way yeah buddy one down two to go that's teamwork yet his finest all right moving on fly-fishing is so nice because you can just you know there's no weight involved the fly line is your weight so when you're ready to recast all you got to do is pull it back and to reduce strain on your arm you don't like whip it whip your arm all the way out you just keep your like pretend you're holding a book with your casting arm hold it to your body and just really just use your wrist that way you can cast all day you won't get strained come on babe there's one Jesus man cast pulling these things out the water like crazy a lot of times almost all the time these fish get hooked right on the nose when you're using the fly so we wet my hands first keep them in keep I'm keeping them in the water right now I know you guys want to see some big fish but hey man this is all I got look at the pattern on him and look how he's hooked right in the nose isn't that a beautiful thing that's just a beautiful thing right there look at that little that little I don't know maggot Scud shrimp pattern look at the pattern on him look at that like a little tiger stripes dude this thing is beautiful beautiful fish now if I can only catch a brown or a big rainbow that would be cool too there's another one oh this was a good one well he's a little bit better a little bit better I mean when I say good he's double the size of that last one same spot such a gorgeous pattern clicked on the exact same spot too right on the tip of that nose like that beautiful fish alright you got it out okay we release this one and then we get Andrew a fish on the fly alright so we gonna get Andrew on his first fish on the fly right now lavalla you're going down too far stop it from up here right up here not a little bit and after you stop it lower it there's a lot of wind so pull it pull it pull it all right wait here okay pull it back hard right here and then your pull yeah - too far back a little bit too far back yeah that's pretty good all right now let's do it again yeah pretty good so pull in a little bit of line with your left hand and then cast back oh you got one dude you got one pulling back reeling with your left hand left hand strip it back strip it back strip it back strip it back now you got him pull up lift up a little bit it had one Andrew had fish and now bring your line up here and just flick it up there wait yeah now keep your rod tip up rod tip up yep and let a little bit of line out as it goes down yep yep yep let it and then yep a little more now now flick it back up there oh no you got one oh that's a good one Alan okay not so fast not so fast cool yeah yeah Andrew on the fish there's another one down there there's a little little baby all right now that's too much all right let's go little little line out so next time keep him keep him in the water this there's a few fish here you get a couple more well does that count Andrew on his first fly first fish on the fly yeah man hella nice nice ass colors hands wet a nice rainbow man wild rainbow trout out here put him right here okay he's good he was only out of the water for 15 seconds so not bad at all they're gonna move spots we've got about five nine we've got two fish here good little spot but all small little guys if you were in a survival situation the limit here is five fish so got five of these you would have a meal for sure oh it's tempted to do that but don't think I will well Ryan Andrew and Daniel are walking back to the packs I'm heading forward another 500 yards not that much maybe a quarter-mile call it today there's a little bend around here I'm going to scout that out and after that I'll head back to the guys fun it's fun out here beautiful day beautiful time so you probably already know this but if you don't I've said it before any National Park in California you can camp for free camp for free and not not National Park any National Forest you can camp for free all you got to do is Park like 500 feet away from the road all the forest trails you can just pull off camp for free how I found this spot all I did was looked on Google Maps and followed the river satellite view look for the boulders that's it called the local area to find out the regulations whether it's barbless how many fish you can keep artificial flies only or bait is okay so that's what you got to do just do a little research and you can find spots just like this beautiful out here now let's just hope the mountain lion wasn't like alright I'm gonna wait for these guys split up and when they do I'm gonna get the one me hopefully not let's go all the bigger ones have been caught in the deeper pools so think we really got to go find the deeper pools there we go that's a good little drift right here that should get fit oh that got bit she bit get bit again they're just oh it came up to the for the dry fly on that one watch my back mountain lions and bears too there's just something about seeing that indicator go dunk oh there there he is oh it's a little guy a little bit bigger Oh jumping Oh jumping like a crazy little trout you got for me today look at that fight nice little guy oh man this one would be good to eat oh wow Wow look at the pattern on this one that bright pink pattern isn't that nice nice fish right here for this area wow that's beautiful all right chill chill chill honestly I would rather have quality over quantity but I mean at this point I've only been fly-fishing three times in my life so quantity is good too because you get the experience come on baby well one came up a little guy all there is Oh word these little guys are fun another little guy eh they're getting bigger maybe down there they're even bigger let's see let's go find out that's almost an eater man oh my god this really tempted me why they got to do this to me beautiful fish releasing beautiful color look at that man that's just gorgeous all right I'm hoping they're a little bigger down there let's go find out all right I'm at one of the last spots that I'm going to fish out today I know a lot of you guys are interested in the rock formations here all this is normally underwater under ice in the winter and check out how much it's eroded look at all these holes isn't that pretty cool so right down here right past that rock that's where I'm gonna try next man I wish I could just walk this entire thing but of course we got deadlines and stuff so I got to get back soon so I only got about 20 minutes to fish here brown trout baby brown trout if I'm lucky you'll be able to see the strike indicator which is my dry fly go down and the fish bite it and you serious Tim came up and ate the dry did you see that there's another one down there following it all I got double don't look I doubled up doubled up baby I don't think this one's gonna make it bleeding which is good for me I'm gonna eat it let me kill him so I can really see the other one right now that's not a bad looking fish kind of dark but I think he's wild I think he's going to be good just bleeding a little bit someone keep them hey man see that I don't mind yelling out here because the water is so loud oh my god coming up to eat the dry all right before I head back this one more spot man I swear a last cast never means last cast all right this is the last spot before I gotta go I see one coming to it right now oh he got it oh damn it there there is nice little guy Oh came off damn nope should get bit right here should get bit right here right about here 3 2 1 all right I wasn't even gonna show this on camera but I wanted to see what's inside the stomach I just think it's been out of the water for about an hour I think it's still okay I'm gonna gut it man that that's dried as heck hopefully nobody thinks I'm doing a disservice to this fish but I just want to see what's inside the stomach I've got some dehydrated chicken risotto from REI just add hot water wait 20 minutes and you're good to go all right let's see moment of truth what you got in here what you've been eating what can I use to catch more of you guys much in the stomach we've got something think see that that looks exactly like what I've been using to catch them and they're biting like crazy on this thing probably got about eight to twelve trout on this little scuz looking fly that's cool that's really reassuring our way one more thing this guy's skin is super dry I guess I'm not going to eat the skin so one way to skin it you bend the head back you hold the meat and all the skin comes right off so in case you don't want the skin of a trout this is a quick easy way to do it come on baby get out there all the skin all the pin bones there you go completely skin now I'm gonna throw that in the risotto nice nice meat looks pretty good so we're going on day three now you see the tarp here this is not how I slept I set it up ready to go thinking that this soft sand was gonna be just the best comfort on earth but turned out at night all the red ants all the spiders all the crickets were crawling around like crazy so last-minute decision like 10 p.m. pitch black I decided to sleep right behind the camera let me show you how I slept right here on this hardrock machete in arm's length away just in case but that insulator worked really well slept pretty good for sleeping on a hard rock the only difficult part about sleeping on this rock with no tent or anything was that the moon was so bright it was like a bright light but the other cool thing was you could see the stars there were so many stars out and it just makes you think you know you're out here just looking at the stars thinking about at one point in time there were actually people on this frontier out here who had never seen what was past this rock you know on some expedition living like this crazy to think about like that and they didn't have anything to survive with they had no phones or anything like that but it's just crazy to think about that another thing if you have any tips for me to improve my fly-fishing I would greatly appreciate that I've learned so much from the past comments I've only been fly-fishing three times in my life so I've improved tremendously and it's all thanks to the comments like holding the book under your arm while casting to keep from getting your shoulder tired that was all from the comments mending it nicely keeping the rod tip up so the lot of your fly line isn't in the water when you're in close quarters all that's from the comments I'm learning all that from you you guys are teaching me so much so if you can teach me some more than I can teach the next people and that would just be amazing but it's it's so fun fly-fishing is so fun it's a great little skill to learn and just getting out here in National Forest man don't like it
