The staircase ahead leads to an underground entrance to the train station. The Santa Maria Novella Station (SMN) is the busiest station in Italy with 160,000 people passing through every day. The building to the right is the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella from which the station gets its name. Please SUBSCRIBE and press the LIKE button so you will be notified with each new video** Grazie! The walk to the Piazza del Duomo takes about 8 minutes from the train station. You can skip ahead to 08:11 to see the Florence Duomo Complex which includes Baptistery, Duomo and Bell Tower. This brick building is the Church of Maria Maggiore originally built in the 11th century. The original bell tower is now part of the exterior walls. The bell tower has a lone Roman head, known as La Berta, built into its side. In 1327, the astrologer Cecco d'Ascoli was burned at the stake in front of the church and when he asked for water, Berta yelled out to deny his request. The Baptistery of San Giovanni, named after St. John the Baptist, is one of the oldest buildings in Florence. The baptistery is most famous for its three sets of bronze doors, including the 'Gates of Paradise." The baptistery was built on the site of an ancient Roman temple dating back to the 1st century AD. The mosaic ceiling depicts the 'Universal Judgement' and took over 100 years to complete. The pyramid shaped dome once had a hole at its center and was used to shine light on the floor's sun dial. The entrance opposite the baptistery is the ticket office where you can purchase tickets for the baptistery as well as all other monuments. The Duomo, or Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, took 140 years to build. The name translates to "Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower" but most people simply call it the Duomo. The "flower" refers to Jesus Christ as the first fruit of our salvation, germinated on the 'stalk' (Mary) from the 'roots' of David's family. The three bronze doors date from 1899 to 1903. The original facade of the Duomo was left incomplete until 1897. It was mostly bare brick before that. The Porta del Paradiso, or Gates of Paradise, is the main entrance to the baptistery. **Please Subscribe and click the Bell to receive notifications for upcoming videos**
