look people keep coming up to me they keep telling me chester my animation's floating they're in my dms they're in my replies they're in my comments oh floaty animation absolutely this float you that oh just so i hit the spline button and now my animation looks bad you may think it's something you're doing when you first go into spline but you my little child are wrong you need to set up your blocking so that when you press spline it works nicely and what you have from the blocking is transferred over without losing too much so i'm going to give you some tips to help you with that and for those of you that animate straight in spline you're a psychopath and this video isn't for you so here's a little animation test i did with the ang rig just in blocking and i've got some key poses how i found those key poses you should watch my previous video on reference you might think that this is enough keys for the animation not to be floating when we press spline but the truth of it is that there's certain pieces of information that are still missing by press spline right now as you can see we have floaty animation we're blending slowly between certain poses there's certain elements that kind of work in certain areas and certain bits that don't the reason that this is happening is you're letting the computer decide too many decisions for you you have to go in and add more keys and more information so that it knows what to do when you hit spline and this is the biggest issue i see when people go from blocking to spline is they leave out so much information just for the computer to figure out and then they wonder why it's not working you're letting the computer do it you have to make those decisions where are you holding poses where are you easing where's the snap so with a shot like this which is really dense and complicated i'd end up having keys on every two to one frame on some of the quicker bits through the middle here and then every three or four on some of the slower bits this process of breaking down your animation beyond just your key poses and adding more information is usually called blocking plus so here's a version of that hang shot where you can see that there's keys on every few frames a lot of the time on this fast bit it's almost on ones a few twos where things are held for a bit longer but we're really going in and defining that motion before hitting spline and some of the slower moments like here where it's a hold there's less keys and i'll go in and make that more organic when i get there especially the start here i'll make that a lot more organic when i get into spline another important thing i did during this phase which was missing in the previous pass was adding moving holds so here for example where the character is not moving i just set a key to anchor that but that's going to be completely stiff when we hit spline so what i can do is simply make that an ease out using tween machine so there's a very slight amount of difference during this move and that'll be more of a gradual hold throughout that time and i'll have to do the same here before we start to go this way so maybe in here i'll add another moving hold i'll use really hard back or even if i want the motion to continue this way i'll set a key go to the previous key and add an ease in so that the motion can continue into this pose so there's still some motion going on and then we can start to come out on this pose so now let's have a look at it i'm going to quickly your filler if i press spline now with this animation with all of these extra keys and we see how it's looking it's almost there all of it is now is going in polishing it's tracking things it's cleaning things up it's creating arcs look might not be there it's emphasizing timing all of the things that you do in splines the next most important thing to be paying attention to is that your spacing is progressive and not even even spacing bad so what is progressive spacing and what is even spacing let's have a look at this cube here simply we're just going left to right we're using one axis right now with just two keys you're allowing the computer to define all of the motion and it's feeling pretty even what i need to do is add more eases on either side of the motion to allow a slower build up of speed acceleration and more of a padded ending i'm gonna add an ease back towards our start position maybe even even tighter here just so we have a bit of a move and we start to speed up and maybe i'll do the same at the end where our ease into the final position but make it nice and tight [Music] we've added an ease out and it needs in and it's already way less floaty but there's still a fair amount of empty space here without keys so we can go in and define the motion a little bit more we could go halfway between this and make this even less so i can ease back even more and same again on this side we can ease in even tighter just making sure that this spacing between each of these keys is getting smaller and smaller but we can break it down even further so we can add a key in the middle of each of these and go four frames maybe and we can hold it back for a little bit longer one two three four same again and this can speed up even closer to the final position so progressive spacing is that the space between each of these frames is getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger and then smaller smaller and smaller and smaller if there was two frames that were going the same distance that would be even spacing that's what we're looking to fight against so if we look at the graph editor here we can probably see that this is getting slightly bigger and bigger until it gets into this point which is speeding up at its highest speed and then we ease in to a final position so that's what you need to look out for so just like that we've broken up the spacing and it's no longer feeling even this is obviously a very simple exercise but it's something that you need to think about when you're going between your extremes of your two poses in animation that's my tips on keeping your animation from being floaty apparently a large percentage of you guys aren't subscribed that are watching this so please subscribe it will help me out and it will help me keep above my friend owen and subscribers if you like the way i teach i offer private mentoring so give me a message on linkedin or twitter you can find those links in the description and we can figure something out if you want to learn from me in a one-on-one setting
