so I recently picked up a solid Pine four drawer dresser uh made by Stanley it's a small dresser I think it would work well at maybe a child's room or a guest bedroom um but so I finished it and it's not my fave it's not my wife's fave either that's for darur so it won't be staying in our house so I hope someone out there buys it but you might like it so follow along and let's see how this furniture refinishing project turns out and we'll find out if this is a flip or a [Music] [Applause] [Music] flop so the first few steps of any furniture refinishing project is usually you want to take some before pictures before you start that way you can remember where you started from and then obviously pictures afterwards to show where you ended up especially if you are intending to sell uh the piece of furniture and then of course there's cleaning I really don't like this step but it it's necessary um I use crud cutter it seems to be a really good product now this looks like I'm cleaning uh bare wood but there is a finish over it that I'm going to sand down um but we need to clean it all over inside and out uh vacuum the inside this particular piece has all kinds of stuff on the back you on the inside uh of the drawers when I when I took the drawers out there was just stuff that had fallen back there even found a key fob so I hope they don't need it so and then after cleaning of course we're going to be sand s ing so now that it's clean it's time to sand I'm going to use my DEWALT orbital sander on uh most of the flat places which is the top and the sides and um I'm starting with 80 grit sandpaper then I'm working my way up to 120 then 150 um I don't have 180 uh so I'm going to jump from 150 to 220 uh on the on the orbital for the curved edges on I'm going to and edges that I can't really get into with the devault Walt I'm going to use my uh surf prep again I'm going to run through the same grits um but this is really good for rounded edges and you know for areas I just really can't get the orbital sander in so this big chip out of here that's the biggest repair I've got to do I've got a few other just little places that I'm going to put some wood filler in but I'm going to mix up some Bondo and I'm going to fix that and then also got a little place up here it's kind of out of out of camera range at the moment that um it doesn't really require a Bondo but since I've got it mixed I'm going to use that to fill in a little bit of of cracks and uh dents there along the the base so I'm going to make up some Bondo and I'll be right back okay I got some Bondo mixed up and let's get her on here usually mix it hot so I want to get it on before it it starts to dry up on me we've got I'm working outside and this time of year um Florida's got biting flies one just got on me and they sting like heck they don't last long I mean the Flies they're going to end up dying off here in just a little bit but that while they're here it is just a mess yep it's going to dry up on me get that on there so I get a little bit up here nope missed God I always mix this so hot now that I got the chest all sanded and uh the one repair made um it's now time to sand all the drawers I got four drawers here and um so I need to sand those as well and uh again same routine starting with 80 grit working my way up to 220 I have changed my decisions about what I was going to do with this little dresser and so what I finally decided is I'm going to do a tan wash on the drawer facings and the top of the dresser I am using Sharon Williams um Emerald urethane uh paint uh and a color called Stone lion I tend to use Sharon Williams on almost everything I know a lot of people use all kinds of different paints especially paints but but I find Shon Williams a really good product so uh I usually just stick with it so I've going to tan wash the the the the drawers like I said the face and the and the sides and then the uh top of the the dresser I also measured my tan wash I did a 4: one I actually measured it I didn't eyeball it um I kind of been particular about that I say I'm going to use a 4 to1 I want to make sure it's it's a 4 to one so one part paint and four parts water and then once I get the tan wash done then I'm going to start painting the the frame and the sides of the little dresser so this is really about 3 days later um I decided to use a gel stain on the frame and the the sides of the dresser I used barane uh Gel Stain in a color called Kona it's kind of a ob you see a Java type of of color um every time I use gel stain I kind of swear I'm never going to use it again I honestly don't like it much um I some people say it's easy to work with I don't find it that easy to work with the drying time especially if it's if it's humid outside like it is here in Florida takes for forever it took 3 days for this to to well it took really a couple of days for it to dry but since it's an oilbased and I'm using a water-based polyurethane top coat on it I needed to let it dry for at least 3 days so um obviously I've already painted this and it's dried and so what I'm doing now is uh applying the top coat to the areas that my sprayer is not going to reach which is you know kind of just the the insides of the frame here um and so I'm just applying it with a with a regular brush I mean it's a nice brush you need a nice brush to cut down on on any kind of uh um brush marks so I'm going to go ahead and and and paint the the insides of of this and apply the top coats and then once that's done and dried then I'm going to uh the drawers back in and I'm going to spray the whole thing uh again I'm using um a Varan uh in this case it's a matte top coat um and it's water-based which is why I need to let things dry for as long as they need to dry you know I thought about painting this in more of a a black color um and um then I would not have needed the dry time but for some reason I said well let's use a stain you know to try to bring out you know the wood grain a little bit on the sides and not completely cover it up so that's why I went ahead and pick the gel stain even though I swear I never I'm never going to use it again so I've loaded my dresser into uh the spray ttin and I'm now starting to apply the top coat uh with my grayco variable speed sprayer I'm going to be applying three coats and I'm using varane's uh water-based polyurethane and it's uh in the in a a matte finish I have to admit I I have had problems spraying polyurethane with this sprayer and it's not the sprayer fault it's a it's user eror um I think the biggest problem was is that I was using the wrong tip this spare comes with two tips one for uh paint and one for stains and uh I switched to using the tip for stains to spray the polyurethane and it works much better um sometimes it still get a little heavy and I've got to deal with it but uh overall it's getting better and uh now it's just time to apply the the knobs and Stage it and sell it so here is the finished project um it I got to admit it's not my favorite um I liked other things I've done much better my wife certainly does not like it so it's not going to be staying in our house so someone out there is going to need to buy this but overall I think it turned out well I'm just not sure how the two-tone is going to go over in the Tampa Market but um it it turned out well and I am pleased with how it turned out although it's it's not my favorite but we'll sh we shall see so if you found anything entertaining useful or funny I would appreciate you subscribing and stay tuned for the next furniture refinishing project from the next season
