hello and welcome to busy works beats   dot com today we continue the fl studio  series right here at busyworksbeats.com   slash fl studio today i'm going to show you how to  make your first beat in fl studio literally step   by step and the reason i'm doing this video  is because i recently tried to learn coding   and i realized how enormously dense the field was  and how scattered everything was and i was like i   just need a step-by-step guide what is step one  how do i do stuff so that's why i'm making this   video for you and revisiting the basics so if you  don't know me i'm game from busyworksbeats.com   we've trained over 700 000 producers around the  world some have gone to work with drake young   thug post malone ariana grande nba young boy  yg french montana race remember the list goes   on and on and on a lot of billboard artists so  shout out to the students who apply this stuff   so i'll show you a technique today on how to make  beats from scratch your first beat we're gonna go   hip hop for this uh genre style but keep in mind  the type of beat you're trying to make require a   lot of outside stuff so i just want you to always  remember you can do stuff with stock plugins   however fl studio is not built stock wise like by  default it's not built for hip-hop as far as their   sounds that come with the daw i want to make that  extremely clear because you're going to have to go   out and seek those drum kits that sound like you  know the metro booming kits or go seek the plug-in   that you may need to get a certain sound and  that's the fun of it too discovering new plugins   and new drum kits i just want you to be really  clear stock stuff isn't really built for hip-hop   but i'll show you how to make hip-hop stuff with  it okay so again i'm assuming that you don't have   all the plugins and so again i'm trying to step  into your shoes so the first step is click this   button right here this is the channel rack this  is where we load up sounds okay for the most part   so let's right click and let's replace this bad  boy and let's start out with like a bass type   of sound let's go with the 3x uh osc okay and  from here we're going to what i like to do and   i'm just going to give you this step by step so we  don't waste too much time just go to where it says   oscillator 2 and turn this little thing down on  the right side that's basically a volume knob okay   so if i turn these on it just changes the tone  and it doesn't sound good okay we just want those   off and then we're left with just the top number  one and it's called a sinusoid wave or a sine wave   and we're going to pull this coarse pitch down  i'll play a tone so you could hear it go down   i'm gonna pull that to pull that to zero so that  it has more bass frequency in it now it's boomy   now if you're on headphones like apple headphones  or something you might not hear those low   frequencies yet but i'll show you a way to help  that bass translate into um speakers we only have   to do one more step for this bass sound let's go  to this cog icon where it says detailed settings   let's click there and let's go to this wrench  tool and then we're going to turn on what says   mono mode so mono mode means we can only  play one note at a time on our keyboard and that makes sure that the bass notes don't  overlap okay so it automatically puts a good   slide value we don't have to keep messing with  stuff now to go back to the main screen just go   to this plugin icon and now you're back at the  main screen so a good habit that you need to get   in the habit of doing is hitting ctrl l if you're  on the mac it's command l and that will send this   uh if you go to the channel rack again it will  send this sound to what's called the mixer which   is this little thing right here that you see so  if i hit ctrl l it will automatically send that   sound to the mixer so that it's accounted for  which is really important when you're making   beats you want to know where everything's at you  don't want it to just be floating around okay so   that's how we do that and it auto-names it for  us okay so that's that and yeah so that's that   so let's create a bass line first because this  is the energy of the beat this is like the   the main thing about hip hop as the bass now we're  not going to create 808 type bass because that's   a different sample that does not come with  the stock sounds that's why i said there's   there's a lot of sounds missing but no worries  i'll give you access to a bunch of project files a   bunch of sounds a bunch of all types of stuff and  all you got to do is just go to busyworksbeats.com   fl studio when you sign up with your  email be sure to confirm your email   because then we'll send you know the download link  and the download link comes with again access to   a ton of project files a ton of sounds for hip  hop and all different types of stuff in there   royalty free loops there's a lot in there okay  so anyway let's go to channel rack and let's   right click and then go to piano roll so here's  where we map out the music of a said instrument   and by default we're going to turn on this little  icon here it stands for the metronome so if i hit   space bar you're going to hear clicking away so  i highly recommend even i do it till this day   okay if you have trouble with rhythms turn  your metronome on and the reason is because   the only way to know where you are is to listen  to a measured point you know if a ship is going   from one island to another continent they need to  measure where they are or else they'll get lost   and so the same thing happens with us we need  to measure where we are in time so that's what   the metronome is for um i'll keep it at 140 bpm  we don't have to change the bpm and get exotic   but more modern hip-hop is about let's see 120  bpm all the way up to i've seen 200 even so it's   it's a wide range and we produce in what's called  double time and i'll show you what that means here   so let's go do one more thing let's click  this little magnet it's going to snap to grid   we're going to one half beat and i'm gonna help  you set up your piano roll real quick just go to   the top left where it says piano roll options  and let's go to view and we want this to have   uh where is it at keyboard style classic and then  key labels all notes okay this is very important   for many different reasons i don't want to  bore you with every reason why just do it   just do it as nike would say next we're going  to go to the top left and go to helpers and   then we're going to go to where it says ghost  channels and this is really beneficial for you   in the future again just do it as nike said  don't don't question me now i've trained over   probably a million but we on paper over 700 000 so  i don't want you to get too caught up in the small   details okay now that we're here we're gonna grab  this pencil tool and let's start mapping out notes   so let me turn up my headphones a little bit so  i can hear and let's left click on e now e and f   are gonna be your secret kind of notes for bass  there's something about the vibration of e and   f that just resonate really well um with speakers  and that's because it probably has about some six   excuse me some 60 hertz or some 70 hertz in there  somewhere we don't think it too scientific as the   what i just said but there's a reason why this  frequency works so we're going to start at e   okay and we're going to left click  and drag this out until it hits   the next column that little dark column  so i want to go so okay so use your ear   okay use your brain now for this example i'm just  going to hit control up or command up on a mac so   that you can actually hear the tone because some  people again they can't hear those low frequencies see i was out of key so sometimes your ear will trick you to think a  bass note as a certain note because the note's   too low so way to check that is to pull your  bass notes up one octave so you can hear them   in a proper frequency range to to be like  okay yeah i meant to play that note so bass   gets a little tricky like that so if you hit  control down again you can pull it back down   okay but we're going to hit ctrl up just so i can  hear the tones okay so it goes e g b c okay and   they're all one bar okay which means they go from  column to column that little dark column to column okay and it loops back and it sounds good  looped back so now what we can do is hit   ctrl down or command down on mac to pull  that back into the range the base range see how sometimes in the bass range it sounds like  a different note that's where a bass gets a little   tricky if you go lower sometimes because our ear  can't really pick up all the frequencies of it   so just keep that in mind so let's x out  of there so it all makes musical sense   now we're going to go to this place called  the mixer now i'm only showing you this step   so you can understand how stuff works it's  not that you have to go to the mixer every   single time that you write something this  is just in case you want to edit a sound   so in this case i want this bass to have  more frequency content in it so i want to   do what's called saturation the same way my  webcam let me show you guys a little parallel   so for example my webcam hopefully this metaphor  makes sense and i always forget how to get there   so let me show you you can see my screen right yes  so if i go to properties and i did the same thing   which okay if i go to filters that's what  it's called and i go to color correction   my saturation's at 0.59 but what happens  if i crank my saturation up i look red   i look like an orange i look like the fl logo so  that's what we're doing we're just hyping up the   colors of our sound so that they're more colorful  you know if i put my saturation up too high   it the picture looks distorted so we're doing the  same exact thing to sound i'm going to pull up my   saturation so it adds a little more color density  but i don't want it to get distorted unless i   that's my intention okay so that's a little  metaphor a little analogy for y'all so we're   10 minutes i want to move a little bit quicker  um so let's go to the mixer which is right here   and let's go to where it says 3x osc let's go to  slot number one now keep in mind fl studio tends   to name stuff differently than other dolls in  theory this is really called an insert not a slot   okay so this insert number one we're gonna  swap that out now your list of plug-ins   is not as illustrious as mine i have over 1500  plug-ins don't obsess about plug-ins um trust me   just go to let's do fruity i'm trying to decide  between fruity blood overdrive where we have   fruity blood overdrive let's go to that one and  if you don't see it from your list you just right   click instead and just type in blood and it will  pop up on the screen if you can't seem to find it   for whatever reason so now we're gonna go back to  the mixer click on fruity blood overdrive first   step turn down your post gain before you blow  your ears off okay and then turn up your preamp   so see how the base is gaining more energy now what happens if we go back to the mixer  so what i'll do is i'll exaggerate this now but the problem is if you crank this  up just by itself it will thin out   the base and i'll show you a way  to make it not then out the base   okay so what we're going to do is go to where  it says fruity blood overdrive this little   circle next to it stands for what's called  a mix level this is how much of the effect   we want on something so i'm just going  to pull this effect down so it blends in   and i'm gonna find that sweet spot between having  enough base and then having enough saturation so here's about the sweet spot okay so there's other plugins we can  use but again we're using stock plugins   now let's go to our browser and we need to  actually find uh actually look before we get to   the drums let's write the music and then why the  drums last so let me show you how to map this out   what we want to do is click this  icon here stands for the playlist   click that icon and now you want to go to the left  side where it says patterns and drag pattern one   into your screen and this is how we start to make  the lego blocks make sense let's go to song mode   which is really important for us to hear this it's  going to snap to grid and let's go to bar mode and   this is the easiest way to measure out your song  and once you hit space bar you can actually hear your bass okay so we're just adding the lego  pieces so my recommendation is to put this on   the paintbrush tool and then add it out i may do a  series because this video says we're at 10 minutes   and i may do a series in like 15 minute chunks  so i think that's what i'll do because i don't   want to make this an hour long and then you get  bored and then you don't learn how to make beats   so let's go let's continue this series this is  part one how to make bass in part two we're going   to go over how to add melody and different  shortcuts you can use in part three i guess   we'll do drums and in part four we'll do like  i don't know we'll figure it out by that time   thank you if you want the access to a bunch of  free project files and a bunch of free sounds   and all that type of stuff if you want to learn fl  studio for real go to busyworksbeats.com flstudio   and we'll help you out there thanks for  watching it's game from busyworksbeats.com
